Tim was in the breakroom trying to get the new coffee machine to work but isn't sure how to do it when Grant and Hunter walked in. "Hey." "Hey." Grant and Hunter said at the same time.
Tim looked over at them and stood up. "What was wrong with the old coffee machine?" Tim asked.
"Well good morning to you too." Hunter said rolling her eyes as she grabbed herself and Grant a bar.
"Lead levels, for one." Grant said, taking the bar.
"Mice infestation, for two," Hunter walked over. "Here, let me do it," Hunter pulled the lever down and coffee poured into Tim's cup, Hunter handed it to him knowing he only took black coffee, she smiled. "See? It's easy."
"That is easy." Tim comments.
"Yeah. I watched a ClipTalk tutorial, Lexi sent it to me just in case we got one of these in the station 'cause they have one at the DA's office." Hunter said.
That's when Grant, who like Lexi knew they were dating tried to catch them out. "So, what'd you guys get up to last night?" He asked.
"Nothing." Tim said quickly.
"I went to the new Chagall exhibit." Hunter lied.
"Oh, yes. Lucy wants to check that out." Grant said. "And drag Tamara with her." He added.
Hunter laughed. "You should totally take her and Tamara, I asked Lexi if she wanted to go but declined," Tim just drunk his coffee while the two partners talked. "You get such a great sense for the evolution of his style. It's good."
"We will. Okay. Thank you for the rec and the bar." Grant said.
"Yeah." Hunter said.
"See ya." Tim said and Grant walked out.
Hunter turned to Tim with a deadpan expression. ""Nothing?" You had all morning to come up with a cover story, and that's what you went with?" She asked.
"Whoa, whoa. He bought it, didn't he?" Tim asked.
"Mm." Hunter hummed.
"What if he had asked you a follow-up question about the exhibit?" Tim asked her.
"Let him. I read the catalog for the exhibit cover to cover." Hunter said, smugly.
"Well you're dedicated," Hunter gives Tim a look and makes herself a coffee while Tim speaks. "I hear you have Citizen's Academy today." Tim said.
"I do, so there's gonna be a lot of busybodies that are way into their Neighborhood Watch. But the ones I have to be most careful with is -- screenwriters." Hunter said.
Tim nodded in agreement. "And not give them your business card. You'll be up to your eyeballs in scripts." He added.
"Yes, that's something else I need to watch out for." Hunter added.
"Yeah." Tim agreed.
Hunter looked around to make sure that no-one else was coming. "So, um, what are you doing tonight?" She asked.
""Nothing" -- I hope." Tim smirked.
"Nothing sounds perfect." Hunter replied before walking out.
***
Hunter walked into the briefing room. "Hello."
"Good morning." The group of people said.
Hunter walked behind the podium holding a file. "Welcome to Citizen's Academy," she places the file down on the podium. "Uh, I'm Detective Hunter Lopez, and I will be your instructor today. So, as you know, this is an outreach program where you learn a little bit about the LAPD and how we do things here. And one of the first things we always do is run background checks on everybody who signs up," Hunter opened the file and looked at two names. "So, Chris Pike, Jack Harris, you have prior felony convictions for robbery and assault, so that will disqualify you from learning how we do business here," the side door opened. "Officer Simmons will show you out. Thank you," the two men walked out. "And, Janet White" Janet tensed up. "Not only do you have a record, but you have an outstanding warrant for your arrest," Janet heads to the door when another cop opened it. "Finn will happily escort you to processing." Hunter said.
"Right this way. You can tell me why stealing a fire truck seemed like a great idea." Finn said leading Janet to processing.
"Okay. So now that that's out of the way, let's get started," someone with a laptop raised their hands. "Yes?" Hunter asked.
"We're allowed to use whatever happens here in our scripts, right? As long as we change the names?" The writer asked.
"Ugh." Hunter placed a hand on her forehead for a moment. "I will get back to you on that."

Aaron and Tim were patrolling. "Hey, so, I have some ideas on how I think we can increase the LAPD's social media presence. Think I should run them by Grey?" Aaron asked.
"Absolutely." Tim said.
"Are you just saying that so you can watch him shoot me down?" Aaron asked.
Tim's phone started ringing and he answered it on speaker. "Genny? What's up?" He asked, seeing that it was his sister calling.
"I'm at Tyler's baseball practice. Spellman Field. Things are getting really ugly between one of the parents and the coach."
"No!" A woman yelled in the background.
"Why can't you just --" Another woman was heard asking.
"On our way." Tim said before hanging up.
***
Tim and Aaron arrived at the field where a mum, Celeste, was yelling at the coach while people were filming, Genny was standing beside her son, Tyler Bradford. "How is he supposed to show you what he can do when he is stuck in the outfield?!" Celeste yelled.
"I know what he can do."
"I want Cody on that pitcher's mound immediately or I'm having you fired!"
"You do know I'm coaching the kids for free, right?" The coach asked.
"Then we're paying you what you're worth." Celeste spat.
"Okay, guys, maybe we could discuss this in private." Genny suggested, trying to intervene.
That's when Tim and Aaron walk through the gate. "What's the problem?" Tim asked.
"Oh, this -- this idiot wants to put my kid on the outfield! He's a pitcher!" Celeste yelled at Tim pointing at the couch.
"No, he's not. Blake is the only one with any actual pitching skill." The coach points to the small red headed child.
"Uh, I don't have to pitch, Coach. Really, I-I like the bench." Blake said.
"See? Bench him." Celeste demanded.
"You want to know why your son's in the outfield, Celeste? Because he's terrible! He is the worst player I've ever coached."
Celeste punched the coach and Tim grabbed and cuffed her. "Okay, ma'am, now you're going to jail." He said, handing her off to Aaron.
"What? No, I –"
"Oh, my God, what just happened?" A woman asked.
"But, uh, he's a pitcher." Celeste exclaimed.
"Sir, are you okay?" Aaron asked the coach who had blood coming out of his nose.
"No. I quit." The coach then walked off the field.
Tyler looked at his mother. "Does this mean practice is canceled?" He asked.
"He's our third coach. Might mean the season's canceled." Genny replied, rubbing her sons back slightly.
That's when Aaron thought of something. "Hang on. What about -- What about Tim?"
Genny smile widely as Tim looked at Aaron, glaring. "What about Tim?"
"Nothing." Aaron said.
"No, it's a great idea. You love baseball, and you wanted to be more involved in Tyler's life." Genny said.
"Please, Uncle Tim. We'll have the best time. I promise." Tim smiled at his nephew and glares at Aaron.

Hunter was explaining the difference between a robbery and burglary. "It's an important distinction. A robbery is when you take something through the use of force or fear, and a burglary is when you break into a structure to commit a crime."
The writer held his hand up. "Yeah? What's a B&E?" He asked.
"The -- That is a TV term. Under California statutes, it's not a thing, so don't use it," that's when a blonde woman in the back raised her hand, her name was Kyra. "Yeah?" Hunter asked.
"What happens when you call the police about domestic violence?" Kyra asked.
"Well, great question. A domestic violence call is a mandatory arrest. If we're called to a home, somebody is going away in handcuffs. The days of cops looking the other way are long gone." Hunter explained.
"But, like, what happens to the victim, you know, if they don't have a place to stay?" Kyra asked.
Hunter glanced around, wondering if she needed to pull Kyra aside and speak to her privately. "Um, there are amazing shelters in the city. It's a scary situation, um, and it might seem like there's no place to go, but I promise, everyone has options." Hunter explained.
"I mean, I was just curious." Kyra said.
"Yeah, no. Of -- Of course." Hunter said.
Later, everyone had splinter off for a break, Hunter walked over to Kyra who was at the food/coffee table. "You avoiding the pastries? I don't blame you. They look sad." Hunter comments.
"I need to watch my figure," Kyra adjusted her cardigan. "My boyfriend hates women who let themselves go." She said.
Hunter grabbed a takeaway cup and poured herself a coffee. "Oh, well, what does it matter what he thinks? It's your body." She said.
"He's helping me. You know, I need the motivation to be the best I can be." Kyra replied.
"Oh, and if you slip up? What does he do then?" Hunter asked.
"Uh... He's cool about it. It's my body. You know, like you said." Kyra said.
"You know, sometimes controlling behavior -- it -- it can be, like, a red flag," she frowned for a moment wondering if he had a record. "What's his name?" Hunter asked.
"Um, t-that's not -- uh, he's just looking out for me," Hunter gives Kyra a look. "His name's Oliver," Kyra placed the plate down. "I-I shouldn't have said anything. The bathroom's that way, right?" She asked, pointing somewhere in the station.
"Yeah. Mm-hmm." Hunter said.
"Okay." Kyra walked out.
***
Hunter walked into the bullpen and walked over to her computer and logged on searching up Kyra's boyfriend when Aaron and Tim walked over. "You'll never guess who's coaching Little League." Aaron said.
Hunter didn't look up. "Nolan?" She asked.
"No," Aaron points at Tim. "Sergeant Friendly.
Hunter whipped her head around and looked at Tim. "What? How did that happen? Can I watch?" She asked with a wide smile.
"Guys, it's not that big of a deal, all right? Uh, Tyler's coach quit, so I'm just gonna sub until they find a replacement." Tim said.
"Hmm." Hunter smirked.
That's when Aaron peered at Hunter's computer and looked at the background check she was looking at. "What's this?" He asked.
Hunter looked at the computer. "Uh, so, one of the "students" -- Kyra Cook. Um, her boyfriend, Oliver, is recently divorced, and his ex has a restraining order against him for domestic violence." She explained.
"Hmm." Aaron hummed thoughtfully.
"Do you think he's abusing Kyra?" Tim asked.
"Yeah, I do. I mean, I'm not -- I'm not sure how I can help, though." Hunter admits.
"Well, if she won't admit it's happening, what can you do?" Aaron asked.
Hunter looked into the briefing room where Kyra was sitting down in her chair. "She came to Citizen's Academy for a reason. Maybe -- Maybe she wants help, but she's still too afraid. I think I just need to find a way to make her feel comfortable enough to ask for it." Hunter said.
***
Later, Citizen's Academy had finally ended. "I hope you've enjoyed this little taste of police work today. I know I've enjoyed sharing with you. So thank you. Your questions were very eye-opening. Have a nice day."
"Yeah." A woman said and everyone filtered out.
Hunter called out to Kyra. "Kyra, could you stay a minute?" Hunter and Kyra met in the middle of the room. "I was just thinking about your question, "Where do domestic violence victims go when they don't have anyone to stay with?" She asked.
"I was just curious." Kyra said.
"Of course. I, um -- I would just kick myself if I didn't... If you're scared to go home, I could get you a place in the shelter tonight. No one would ever need to find out where you are." Hunter said.
"What would happen to him? Would you arrest him?" Kyra asked.
"Depends what you tell me. Does he hit you?" Hunter asked.
Kyra shook her head. "No. He would never do that. He just loses his temper -- you know, punches walls, stuff like that."
"Yeah. I can only imagine. That's really scary. You know, that kind of violence, it can escalate really quickly. So just be honest with yourself. Do you feel safe with him?" Hunter asked.
"Not always." Kyra admits.
"Why don't we get you a bed for tonight? Maybe a little bit of time away would be good." Hunter suggested.
"Okay. Thank you." Kyra walked out.
***
Hunter walked onto the pitch and stood beside Genny arriving just in time to hear Tim finish his speech to the children. "I'm seeing a lot of heart out there, okay? Uh, Blake, let's see you pitch. All right. Let's go back out. Back to drills."
Everyone went back out on the field and Tim turned around, recoiling slightly when he saw Hunter who was looking amused. "Hi. Um, who are you?" She asked.
"What?" Tim asked looking confused.
That's when Hunter reached up and stole his cap before speaking again. ""A lot of heart"? They're kind of a mess." She comments, adjusting the cap on her head, Genny just smiled.
"They're kids. It's supposed to be fun." Tim deadpanned.
"No, I know," Tim rolled his eyes and turned back to the children, Hunter just looked at Genny. "This is weird, right?" She asked.
"Our dad coached Tim's little league team for all of three days. He has literal scars." Genny said to her.
Hunter nodded. "He's trying not to be like him." She said.
"Yeah." Genny said softly.
Hunter turned to Genny. "Well, I mean, there is such a thing as over-correcting," the raven haired cop stepped up beside Tim. "Hey, guys. Bring it in. Huddle up."
"What are you doing?" Tim asked.
Hunter looked at her boyfriend. "You know, kids need to have fun, but they also need a little bit of structure. Hey, hustle up," the children made their way over to Hunter and Tim. "Okay. Uh, my name is Hunter. I am Coach Bradford's friend, and we're gonna start with the basics -- throwing the ball. So, first things first, make sure the ball is secure in your mitt. Eyes on the target. Step out with the opposite leg from your throwing arm. Follow through. Ball lands back in the mitt. And we'll cycle through that, okay? We're not gonna move on until everybody gets it. So spread out. Let's give it a try." She said, using her arms to visualize what she wants them to do.
"You heard her." Tim said to them.
The children ran back out and Tim turned to Hunter holding the ball out to her. "Oh," Hunter went to take it but Tim pulled it back. "Oh." Hunter scoffed, offended.
Later, it was nighttime and Genny was helping Tim and Hunter pack up with Hunter still wearing Tim's cap. "I think you two should co-coach. You were great together." Genny said.
"Oh, no, no," Tim shook his head as he placed baseball bats into the bag. "I'm -- I'm ready to hand over the reins entirely." He said.
Hunter laughed. "Not a chance."
"No, but seriously. I saw today why you work so well together other than knowing each other for over twenty years." Genny comments.
"I-I -- It's just, uh --" Tim was trying to find an excuse although it didn't matter with Genny as she wasn't a cop and wouldn't tell anyone until Tim and Hunter gave her permission.
"We spend so much time together on -- out on the job." Hunter said sharing a look with Tim.
"Mm-hmm." Tim agreed. Genny eyes the two with a smile.
That's when Tyler runs over and engulfs Hunter into a hug. "Hi, aunt Hunter."
"Hi, it's nice to see you too." Hunter said, laughing. Tyler then runs back to Blake. "It's so great that Tyler has been making friends so quickly after moving here." Hunter comments.
"Yeah," the three adults stand up and chuck the bags into the trolley. "I mean, Blake's mom works crazy hours, so he practically lives at our house." Genny said.
"Mm." Hunter hummed.
Genny looked over at Tyler and Blake. "Hey, guys? We're about done. Let's wrap it up." Genny said.
Blake runs over to them with Tyler, who also hugged his uncle while Blake was speaking to the three adults. "My mom just texted, my dad's coming to the game tomorrow."
"Oh, that's great. We'll make sure he gets the best seat in the house." Hunter said.
Genny handed the trolley over to Tyler. "Here, honey."
The two boys ran off and Genny turned to the two cops, looking conflicted. "What's up?" Tim asked.
"Blake's dad ran out on them a year ago." Genny said.
"Oh. Do you know why?" Hunter asked.
"Outstanding warrants for assault and attempted murder." Genny replied.
Tim and Hunter shared a look. "If he shows up tomorrow, we're gonna have to arrest him." Tim said.
"Blake will be devastated." Genny comments.
"Well, maybe we'll get lucky and he'll flake on his son again." Tim deadpanned.
"Yeah, here's hoping," Hunter's phone started ringing. "Excuse me," she stepped away to answer it. "Hello."
"Detective Lopez, it's Sherice from the shelter. The woman you sent over -- Kyra -- she's a problem."
"What's going on?" Hunter asked.
"She kept asking if her friend Linda was here, and when I told her it was illegal for me to disclose anything about the people who stay in my shelter, she asked to be moved."
"Yeah, I think I know what's going on. Uh, I'm sorry about that. I-I'll head over right away. Thanks." Hunter hung up and walked back over to Tim and Genny.
"What's wrong?" Tim asked.
"There's something going on with my domestic." Hunter replied.
"You want me to come?" Tim asked.
Hunter shook her head. "No, it's okay. I got it." Hunter being 5'9" just had to stand on her tiptoes slightly to place the cap back on Tim's head.

Hunter found Kyra walking down a street with her things. "You're leaving?" Hunter asked.
"A friend says that I can stay with her." Kyra lied.
"Kyra, you don't have to lie to me. You're going back to Oliver." Hunter deadpanned.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Kyra said.
"You asked about Linda, right? I know that your boyfriend's ex-wife is named Linda." Hunter said.
"You're crazy." Kyra scoffed.
"Did he tell you to ask for her and the kids?" Hunter asked her.
"She stole his kids and pumped them full of lies. He just wants to explain." Kyra said.
"Kyra, we know that he has been beating her for years." Hunter snapped.
"You don't understand." Kyra said, shaking her head.
"No, I do. I think he's using you. And maybe you were telling the truth earlier that he doesn't hit you, but statistics say that he will, okay? So you need to get out of that house." Hunter said.
"I'm done talking." Kyra starts walking.
"Wait," Hunter grabbed a card out of her wallet. "Look, take my card, okay? You can call me. Take it." She said, Kyra grabbed the card.
Suddenly Oliver's car pulls up. "Kyra, get in."
Kyra looked at Hunter. "You don't have to go with him. You don't." Hunter said.
Oliver looked at Hunter. "Yeah, she does. Get in the damn car." Oliver snapped at Kyra.
Hunter grabbed her badge and showed it to Oliver. "Oliver, you need to wait. Kyra and I are still talking." She said.
"I've got nothing more to say to you." Kyra said and she get into the passenger seat.
"You have yourself a nice night." Oliver said and drove off with Kyra.

The next day Hunter was in the briefing room with Tim and Lexi. "There's nothing you can do until she files a police report." Lexi said.
"No, I know but she's not gonna do that. She's under his spell -- which is baffling to me, even though I understand the psychology behind it like every other cop." Hunter said.
"Listen, I-I had this -- this case early on, and the woman would call us, we'd arrest her husband, she'd change the story. The details made no sense. D.A. couldn't prosecute, and she'd go stay at a shelter for a while, and then she'd go back to him. I just -- I could never make sense of it.
"I remember that, he killed her didn't he?" Hunter asked.
"Yeah." Tim said, nodding her head. "And afterwards, the, uh, doctors showed us a C.T. scan, and there was so much damage, you would think she was a professional boxer." Tim deadpanned.
"No wonder her story changed so much." Hunter sighed.
"These cases are frustrating and hard. All you can do is keep circling back. And she may never be ready to leave, but it's important she knows that we'll be there when she is." Lexi said.
"Thank you." Hunter said.
"Hey," Celina and Nolan walked in. "Sorry to interrupt. Did you get my e-mail about the deadbeat tenants?" He asked the red headed lawyer.
"I did. Bailey is renting to these nightmare septuagenarians who have a history of torturing landlords. They grew toxic mold in their last rental to avoid paying rent. Which means you need to start playing hardball." Lexi said.
"Oh, listen, I can do that." Nolan said.
"Mm. I have my doubts," Nolan looks at Celina. "Look, it's just that him and Bailey are just way too nice to be landlords." Celina said.
"Totally," Nolan gives Hunter a look. "O-O-Okay, hold on. You are a complete badass out on the streets, but off-hours -- I mean, you're a little --" Hunter trailed off trying to find the right words.
"Easy target." Tim said, Hunter nodded in agreement.
"A push over." Celina added.
"Hmm. All right. The good news is they haven't paid rent, so you can start the eviction process today. Based on their history, they'll probably take it to court. Because of the backups, it'll take a while to get a date. Uh, if you're lucky, you'll be rid of them in three months." Lexi explained.
"Three... So meanwhile, I'll be out legal fees, and they'll pocket $18,000 renting out the place to make "adult films." Wonderful." Nolan said sarcastically.
Hunter and Tim shared a look as Celina snapped her head towards Nolan. "Okay, wait -- they're doing a porn set? You didn't tell me that."
"I was afraid you would find a way to make it my fault." Nolan said to her.
"No, no. Regardless, that is what's gonna save you." Tim said.
"Yeah, he's right. The lease terms specifically prohibit that. Makes the case more clean cut." Lexi said.
"Great," Nolan and Celina started walking out. "Just you wait and see how much of a pushover I can be."
"I-Is it too late to call in sick?" Celina asked.
"No sick days for rookies." Nolan said.

Hunter was patrolling by herself for the day when her phone starts ringing. "Hello."
"Hunter?" Kyra whispered.
"Kyra, are you okay?" Hunter asked.
"He's really mad. He says that it's my fault that he can't see his kids."
"Yeah, okay. What I'm gonna need you to do right now Kyra is get into a public place, okay?" Hunter asked her.
"Who the hell are you talking to?" Hunter head Oliver saying seeing as he was hovering over Kyra.
"Nobody. I'm sorry." Kyra screams.
"Kyra?" Hunter just gets beeping in return telling her that the call disconnected, Hunter grabbed her radio. "Control, I have a possible 2-73-5 at 9213 Longview Avenue. Send additional units," Hunter gets out of the shop and unholstered her weapon and pounded on the door. "LAPD I'm coming in!" Hunter broke the door in and saw Oliver holding Kyra against the wall with her neck. "Hey! Get off her," Oliver walks over to Hunter. "Hands where I can see them. Back up."
"Make me." Oliver said.
"You really want to add assaulting a police officer to your charge?" Hunter asked him.
"In for a penny." Hunter punches him, knocking him to the ground. "Oh!"
"Put your hands behind your back." Hunter said, cuffing Oliver, she looked behind her and saw Kyra pointing gun at her. "Kyra, put the gun down."
"He's not a bad guy. He just gets mad sometimes." Kyra said.
"He was about to kill you." Hunter said.
"No. I overreacted. I shouldn't have called." Kyra replied.
"No, you made the right decision. You are in danger here." Hunter said.
"They took his kids." Kyra said.
"He is the reason he lost them." Hunter snapped.
"No! His wife-she-" Kyra was saying.
"No, no, no, no," Hunter interrupts, shaking her head. "I know what he said to you, Kyra, and that's a lie." Hunter said.
"You don't understand." Kyra said.
"Okay. None of that matters. What matters now is the choice that you are making. Okay? If you shoot me, you're not gonna save him, but you will go away to prison forever, okay? Just...put the gun down. Kyra...you have the power to save me, okay? Just put the gun down," Kyra finally lays down the weapon. "It's okay. Turn around." Hunter cuffs her.

Tim and Aaron were staking out a truck facility with Angela and Nyla. "According to our source, Moses's truck should be pulling in any minute." Angela said.
"Copy that."
"Can I ask you a question while we wait?"
"Go for it." Tim said.
"What's your take on true evil? Does it exist?"
"Evil as in the devil or guys with broken brains who get off on torture?" Tim asked.
"The first one."
"Look, I think looking for some mythical creature to blame for all the messed up stuff human beings do is a cop out." Tim deadpanned.
"I disagree. I mean, yeah, there are some depraved people in the world, but you can't say that you haven't seen people act in a way that you can't explain." Aaron said.
"That's it--green cab. Standby for the handoff. And there it is."
"Police! Show me your hands. Now! Face the truck." Nyla said to the two men in the truck while Tim and Aaron searched it.
Tim, Nyla, Aaron and Angela had found drugs being transported but then a shootout happened however it wasn't ordered by Quinlan or Moses so Angela and Nyla needed to talk once again to their informant.

Hunter and Tim were at the baseball game for the Grizzlies, the team Tyler plays for and somehow Genny had convinced the two other adults to wear the team logo shirt and cap. "God. Every time!" Hunter huffed as they missed the ball.
Tim placed a hand on her shoulder. "Be encouraging." He said.
Hunter nodded. "Yes. Good," Hunter starts clapping. "Good job. Good try."
Tim looked at Hunter. "We're gonna work on that," Tim turned to Blake. "Blake, you're up, bud."
"Alright, you've got this. Eye on the ball. Let's go. Let's go." Hunter said as Blake ran out.
"Good job, buddy!" Tim yelled.
Hunter looked at Tim. "He looks scared." She said.
"You make him nervous." Tim comments.
"I'm nervous, huh." Hunter said.
"Blake you got this, bud." Tim said yelled.
Blake managed to hit the ball and start running. "Yeah! Whoo!" Tim and Hunter yelled.
"All the way! Take second!" Hunter yelled.
"Go Blake!" Angela and Nyla had sat themselves beside Blake's dad as he shouts in encouragement for his son, and their team wins, Hunter and Tim high-five each other as everyone cheers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I cut down the operation Tim and Aaron were in with Angela and Nyla because I can't be bothered to write it so, I shortened it into a quick explanation.
I've got no idea how baseball works, Australian's play cricket and I don't even like that, so I probably got the baseball thing wrong.
In this episode Hunter turned 40 and it's now 2023, as it's halfway through s5, but Hunter's birthday won't always be explicitly stated.
So we know Lucy has Lucy Lessons so what should Hunter have? Because the only one I can think of is Hunter Hints.
Hope you enjoy.
