Chapter 34

07:53, 11 April 2017

Sean was occupied with looking at all the desserts in the display cases. He didn't even pay attention to why they were really there.

"You seen a girl that looks like this?" Leslie slammed the mugshot down on the counter.

Not wanting to be heard, the man behind the counter nodded his head in the direction of where she was sitting. Sean decided on ordering something, while Leslie went over and sat at the table the girl was sitting at.

"Can I help you?" She asked, picking at her muffin.

"Actually you can."

"With?"

"Is your father's name Hank Voight?"

"Why are you asking?"

"I work for him."

"Who wants to know?"

"He certainly does. You've been missing for ten years." She tossed the missing persons report in front of her.

"That's not me." Sienna snapped the file shut and slid it back across the table.

She was in denial and refused to admit to it. Leslie looked around and then straight at Sienna.

"You're not in any kind of trouble if that's what you're thinking."

"Then why are you here? Did my old man send you?"

"I came on my own."

"Then who's that guy you came in with?"

"That's my partner, Officer Roman."

"What do you want to know?"

"Do you remember a girl named Kim Burgess?"

"Yeah, she was a girl at the camp my parents were counsellors at."

"This her?" Leslie scrolled through her camera roll and showed Sienna a picture.

"Wow...she's all grown up now."

"She's engaged and has two kids now."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Why are you bringing her up?"

"She's been in a coma for the past five years, showing no signs of improvement and we're all worried sick."

"What does that have to do with me?"

"She loved you like a little sister. For her, please...come home."

"My parents and Justin probably resent me now." She looked out the window.

"Justin comes home from Iraq in two weeks. It would mean a lot to him if you came home."

"He hated me...several times he said he wished he were an only child."

"He was a stupid kid. Siblings fight like that all the time. I've told my sister that she's the scum of the earth before, but we still love each other."

"I guess I will."

"Do I have any way of contacting you?"

"I don't have a phone. I don't even have a job."

"Do you even have a place to live?"

"I couldn't afford the rent."

"Come with me."

"Why?"

"Just come with me. Sean, let's go!" He paid the lady at the counter and followed Leslie out to the cruiser.

"Who's this?" He asked, looking in the backseat.

"This is Sienna."

"Any relation to Sergeant Voight?"

"A little."

"How?"

"He's my father."

Sean looked afraid of her.

"If you think I'm some big scary tough person like how everyone makes him out to be, you're far from it. I'm just a homeless runaway."

They pulled up to the district and walked inside. Trudy gave them a look when she noticed a girl with them.

"Who's this?" She leaned on the counter.

"Ask questions later. We need to see Hank. Is he in?"

"You could try saying please."

Leslie took a deep breath and through clenched teeth, she said "Can you please buzz us in upstairs?"

"Since you said please, then yes I will."

"Wait just a second. Who's this?" Erin asked, getting up from her seat.

"Erin Lindsay? Is that you?" Sienna asked.

"It's Erin Halstead, have we met?"

"You don't remember me?"

"Oh my god..." Erin covered her mouth.

"What's so-" Jay noticed the girl. "Well hey there cutie."

"That's Hank's daughter."

"Hank has a daughter? Since when?"

"Since...oh gosh, it has to be twenty four years now."

"I took off ten years ago."

"Little Sienna, all grown up. I can't believe it." Erin gave her a hug.

"Who's that man in the office over there?"

"That's your dad."

Sienna walked over to the office and knocked before walking in.

"Sargeant Voight?"

"Who wants to know?" He was signing a piece of paper near the bottom.

"I think you would."

He looked up.

"I'm home."

"I don't recall knowing you, I'm sorry."

She looked on his desk and noticed a family picture.

"I'm that little girl in that picture."

"My little girl is fourteen. You're not little."

She swallowed and then opened her mouth again.

"I'm your Sienna. Don't you remember me?"

"Hey Hank I was wondering if-" Camille stopped talking immediately.

"Mom!" Sienna ran into her arms. Camille showed her soft side and tears were falling.

"My baby..."

"I told you, dad. It's me."

"It's been a long time."

"I wanna come home, daddy."

"Hank please."

"Come here, kid." He outstretched an arm and she walked into a hug.

When she felt his arms wrap around her, she started crying. After the mini reunion, they headed to the hospital. When they got to Kim's room, they found Brayden and Hannah sitting on the floor coloring. Adam was watching TV. He looked up when he heard the door open.

"Hey guys."

"I don't suppose you remember Sienna?"

"Weren't you that two year old that was always hanging around us?"

She laughed. "Yeah, that was me."

"Nice to see you again." He shook her hand.

Sienna walked over to Kim. "I'm here. You remember me? I was that little girl you used to play with at camp all those years ago. I wish I could have been there for you, I feel terrible about this whole thing. I know you're in there somewhere. I still think of you as a sister because you cared so much about me. I...I have hope that you'll wake up someday. Even if it's not for months, I know the love from all of us is keeping you alive. But we're here, we're all here. My, my parents, your parents, Adam, your kids, Ally and Leslie. We love you, so much." Sienna wiped the tears from her eyes.

"DADDY! Look!" Hannah pointed out.

"What is it, baby girl?"

"Mommy's hand just moved! Look!"

Her fingers wiggled again.

"Oh my gosh..."

"Mommy's alive!"

Brayden rushed over to her bedside. "Mommy, are you in there?"

The next time, her whole hand moved. Adam poked his head out the door and pulled Will into the room. He was just as shocked as they were.

"She's waking up."

Minutes later, her eyes fluttered open. She looked all around at everyone and everything in the room.

"Wha...where am I?" She asked. Everyone looked over.

"Mommy!" Hannah and Brayden wrapped their arms around her.

"Who are you guys?"

"Kim, these are our kids."

"No, our kids are babies."

"They were babies."

He leaned down and kissed her.

"You've been in a coma for five years. Pulpo beat you, almost to death. You're lucky to be alive."

She looked down and noticed a diamond ring on her finger.

"Are we married yet?"

"I set the wedding plans aside when they said what happened to you. I wouldn't have felt right planning it without you."

"Can I ask you something?"

"Ask away."

"Could you tell me the story of how we met? I think the kids would want to hear it."

"Yeah daddy, can you?"

"I would love to."

She pulled the kids close to her.

"It all started with this place called Camp Riverwalk in the summer of 1997. You were sitting all alone under a shaded area, nervous and scared. A ball came flying, hitting you in the head. It was my stupid ten year old self that threw it and laughed in your face. Over the course of the summer, we became best friends and did everything together. That was arguably the best summer I've ever had. It was all thanks to you. That was the year I figured out that you were the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I may have only been a little kid, but I truly felt connected to you, in a way I had never felt towards anyone else."

The twins looked at her. "We missed you, mommy. We missed you a lot."

A tear fell down her cheek.

"Don't cry mama. We love you."

Hannah wiped the tears away with a tissue.

"Do you love us, mama?"

"Of course I do. You're my babies."

She hugged them as tight as she could.
