Chapter 27

Kim was pacing back and forth frantically at work the next day. The guys were out at lunch, so it was just her, Erin and Julie.

"I am so dead." She muttered as she was pacing.

"What's up with you today?" Julie asked, taking a sip of her coffee.

"I can't believe what I did last night, that's all."

"You and Adam having sex isn't a shock anymore." Erin joked.

"Oh him and I didn't do that last night, but I did do it with someone else."

Julie spit out her coffee and nearly fell out of her chair.

"What did you just say?!"

"Shhh!"

"No seriously, what did you just say?" Erin asked again.

"I had sex last night, but not with Adam"

"Who?!" Julie asked.

Kim swallowed hard and then said "Detective Roman."

Erin and Julie both started laughing. When they noticed the expressionless look on her face, they stopped.

"Oh you're serious." Erin quickly shut up.

"But why?"

"It kind of just happened. He was so worked up by not wanting Diana to see him in the courtroom."

"The hearing was moved to this afternoon. The judge was attending to other business yesterday." Julie told her.

"How could I cheat on Adam? When he finds out about this, he'll break off the engagement."

"That won't happen." Erin rubbed her back.

"He's going to find out and he'll take this ring back."

"Simple solution, you don't tell him."

"I wish it was that simple. I said before, I felt bad for him. I'm just gonna pretend like it never even happened."

Erin closed her eyes. "Please tell me you used protection."

"No..."

"You need a morning after pill."

"You effed up, big time." Julie nodded her head.

"I slept with my fiancé's partner! He's going to be crushed and my life will be over!"

"Uh...Kim." Julie pointed beside her.

"You don't get it. Do you? I made the biggest mistake of my life and it's going to be over!"

"Kim." Julie pointed beside her again.

She looked over and realized the guys had returned. Antonio, Kevin, Al and Jay awkwardly edged to their desks. Adam looked absolutely crushed, like someone had ripped his heart out and stomped on it right in front of him.

"Adam...I-"

"Save it." He said, heading down the stairs.

"Wait!" She followed him, but he ignored her.

"Let me explain!" She pleaded as he headed down to the basement.

"What happened?" Platt asked, taking off her glasses and leaning on the desk.

"I'm the world's biggest idiot. Let's just leave it at that." Kim headed down to the basement, finding Adam leaning against their squad car.

"Will you talk to me? Please? I love you." She tried to hug him, but he pushed her away.

"It was a moment of weakness. It meant nothing. I love you."

"You really hurt me."

"All I did was give him a friendly hug. That was it. He started it."

"But you didn't have to go along with it."

"I know, but-"

"If you didn't want it, you would have stopped it. Why didn't you is what I really would like to know."

"I had a few drinks and I just wasn't thinking. Please don't make me beg for your forgiveness. I'm not expecting it. I've loved you since we were kids. I didn't see you for sixteen years. Do you know how much that killed me inside? It was like half of me was missing. Do you know what that feels like? I missed you, there was nothing I wanted more than to be in your life again."

"Time. That's all I'm asking for."

"Don't tell me-" She could feel tears welling up.

"It's not over. I love you."

He pulled her close as the tears soon began to overwhelm her.

"I'm sorry..."

"It's okay." He tried calming her down by talking about the wedding.

"I can't believe you still want to marry me after that."

"There is not a single thing in this world that would prevent me from doing that."

"I just feel awful." She went to walk away, but he pulled her back.

"Don't." He took her face in his hands.

"Okay." She smiled.

"There's that beautiful smile I love." He kissed her forehead and gently moved a strand of hair from her face.

At the hearing, Sean was the first one to be called to the witness stand.

"Sean Roman, do you promise to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"

"I do."

"You may take the stand."

"Are you kidding me right now? Having that little punk testify against me? This has got to be a joke." Diana rolled her eyes.

"Ms. Gish, do remember that outbursts will get you strikes and removal from the room?" The judge told her.

"I dated his pathetic excuse of an older brother. He always tried getting in the way of his brother and I."

She was trying with all her power to get Sean to burst out, but he knew he was under oath and didn't want to risk saying a single word.

"Diana, if you want even the slightest chance of getting the charges dropped against you, I suggest you shut up." Her attorney told her.

She just rolled her eyes and took a sip from the glass of water left in front of her.

"Mr. Roman, I understand you have a history with my client."

"Yes sir, I do."

"Will this at all affect your testimony?"

"She did a horrible crime and I think she deserves the harshest punishment available."

"You're only saying that because you hate me!" She hollered at him.

"You committed an awful crime and deserve to be put away. You don't understand the lives you affected by doing what you did. Andrew already confessed to helping commit it. He will be serving a lesser sentence than you're currently facing. All you have to do is confess and they'll do the same for you. Why don't you? It would be better for all of us. It would be better for you. Take a nice, long time to think of that." He stepped down from the stand and everyone got quiet. Diana looked at her lawyer.

"He's right, you know." He told her.

"Oh shut up."

"This isn't helping your case."

"Is anything helping at this point?"

"Not really."

"I thought so." She folded her arms and leaned back in her chair.

At the end of the hearing, the judge looked over at the jury pool.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?"

"We have, your honor. We find the defendant, Diana Gish, guilty of Felony Arson in the second degree."

"The defendant is remanded to Cook County jail until sentencing. Court is adjourned." The judge banged the gavel.

Everyone started leaving.

"I told you one day Karma was going to bite you. Look who was right for once." Sean said, as he passed Diana.

"You did great today." Kim told him when they arrived back at the district.

"You think so?"

"You didn't sound it, you did great. Because of you, she's going away for a very long time."

"I wasn't too harsh?"

"Nah. How about we go to Molly's tonight for a celebratory drink?"

"Sounds fun."

"I'm invited too, right?" Adam butted in with.

"Of course you are." She leaned up and kissed him.

"Daddy!" A little voice called out. Everyone turned around to see Mikayla. Jay picked her up in a hug.

"I made this for you guys to hang up in the squad room." She handed Jay a picture and he looked at it. She had drawn everyone on it and even put their names above their heads.

"This is so cute! You are the sweetest little thing." Kim gave her a hug when Jay set her down.

"I thought you would like it. I made it during art class today."

"Hey, how come the hat I'm wearing in this says 'Butthead' on it?" Adam looked down at her.

"Well I couldn't put what daddy always calls you."

"And what does daddy always call me?"

"Asshat."

No one could stop laughing.
