Chapter 26
02:24, 3 April 2017Everyone refused to give an answer, so they were all brought in for questioning. It all came down to Adrian's sister and Andrew. They were both in the interrogation room, big dumb smiles on their faces.
"Did you do it?" Antonio asked, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall.
"What do you think?" Adrian's sister answered, the straightest look on her face.
"We think you did it." Kim said out loud.
"Do you have proof?"
"We do, actually. A lighter with your prints on it, plus a gas can with Andrew's prints on it. I think that's all the proof we need." Kim slammed the file on the table in front of her.
"You can't prove it was me."
Kim scoffed. "Yes we can. What is contained in this folder is all the proof we need. All I ask is why? Why would you do this?"
"Why? WHY?! Because we like setting fires. Adrian's said before, it's how we get our kicks. It's fun and we LOVE it." Andrew told her.
"You make me sick." Antonio sat down on the other side of the table.
"We thought it was." Adrian's sister said, looking at her nails.
"Have fun in the prison." Kim got up from her seat and it went halfway across the room. She slammed the door behind her after she exited.
"What's wrong?" Erin asked, just as she was about to pass her.
"It's nothing."
"I'm gonna go get Adam." Erin said and then disappeared.
She was leaning against the wall, an angry look her face. Erin returned with him. Once Adam assured Erin that everything would be okay, she headed into the interrogation room.
"Is everything alright?"
"How could someone do this to a place that so many loved?"
He pulled her close "I don't know, hun. I really don't. I wish I did."
"I just feel awful because when camp starts next week, there is going to be no place for them."
"I have an idea."
"What would that be?"
"How about we organize a fundraiser to gather funds and rebuild?"
"I mean it doesn't begin next week exactly, but the Friday after this coming one. Do you really think we could rebuild and refurbish the entire camp by then?"
"I think we can. Do you know all the people that would be willing to help us?"
"Like who?"
"Your old cabin counselors, Jay, Erin, Peter, Leslie, Kelly and everyone else. That camp made us all who we are today. I know that they would be willing to volunteer their time."
"But what about the cost of all the materials?"
"That's what the fundraiser is for."
"Really?"
"Yeah and I have the perfect idea for one."
"And that would be?"
"You, Julie, Erin, Nadia, Gabby, Sylvie and Leslie hold a car wash. Wear like short shorts or something and skimpy shirts. That'll make the big bucks."
She laughed. "That's a joke, right?"
"Of course it is. But you know what I'm saying."
"I'm sure Voight would just LOVE that."
With the passing days, the fundraiser was organized and over fifty five thousand dollars was raised in support.
"I can't believe you guys did this for us. You will never know how much this means." Maria told them the morning construction began.
"This place was our home." Gabby told her as she picked up a hammer and an armful of boards.
"Hey Casey! Catch!" She yelled, flinging a small box full of nails at him. He caught it, but the force made him fall to the ground. Everyone got a good laugh out of that one. Gabby, Matt, Peter, Kim and Adam were assigned to rebuild the mess hall. It only took an hour to get the foundation up, then they had to work on the roof.
"I'll get the ladders!" Peter said, running over to the supply pile.
"Forget that!" Gabby said, climbing up the foundation and onto the roof.
"You're nuts." Kim told her.
"You know you love me." She laughed, removing the hammer from her tool belt. She started laying down the roofing tiles.
"How did you get up there?" Peter asked, placing a hand over his forehead, covering the sun from his face.
"It's called I climbed up here. Anymore dumb questions?"
Leslie overhead then bickering and laughed to herself.
"It's not funny!"
"It's hilarious."
It took them all day and all the way through the night. Camp Riverwalk was once again the beautiful place they had loved. The sign at the entrance was nothing but a pile of ashes. The significance of that sign, the handprints were from campers thirty years before.
"I got a great idea." Sylvie said, gathering gallons of finger paint from the arts and crafts cabin. She dumped a different color into each of the buckets. "How 'bout it?"
"Yes!" They all soaked their hands in different colors, splattering them all over the sign.
"Now that is what you call a hard days work." Boden said, stepping back to admire their work.
"Nothing I love more than hard, dedicated work." Hank said, pleased with the outcome.
When they walked back up the path to clean up, Gabby started yawning.
"Time for a grass nap." She sprawled herself out on the softball field, using her sweatshirt as a pillow.
"I second that." Kim said, laying down and placing her hands behind her head.
"Me three." Erin said right after.
"Us too." Julie and Sylvie said at the same time.
"What in the world...?" Antonio said as he walked up to the field.
"Don't ask questions. Let them sleep." Jay told him.
"We're not sleeping!" Gabby kicked him.
"Um ow?" He said.
"I hope it hurt."
"Bitch."
"Thanks."
The girls laughed.
"That wasn't a compliment."
"To me it is."
"When's the hearing for Gish's sister anyway?" Jay asked Antonio.
"This afternoon. All of us have to be there."
"The ones who have to be there definitely are Shay, myself and Kim."
"I'm sure we're all going to be called in. Our unit at least."
"Please don't tell me that I have to say something. I have a long history with Diana."
"Diana?"
"Diana Gish."
"What about you and her?"
"She used to date my older brother back when they were in high school."
"Sean, that was years ago. I'm sure she probably doesn't even remember you."
"I'm still worried."
"Don't be, we got your." Antonio said.
That night, Kim dropped by Sean's house.
"Please come in."
She sat on the couch.
"You seemed rather jumpy today. Are you okay?"
"It's just that I have a long history with Diana."
"What kind of history?"
"She used to date my older brother, when they were in high school. What if she remembers me?"
"Like Antonio told you this morning, it's been years. She won't even remember you."
"She always hated me."
"It'll be fine."
As she went to leave, she gave him a hug. As they pulled back, they looked deep into each other's eyes. He leaned in and kissed her. She kissed him back. He shoved her down on the couch and pulled her shirt off.
