Chapter 25

09:25, 1 April 2017

It was Kim's first day back at work after her maternity leave. She hadn't even been inside the district five minutes, before being called upstairs.

"What is it?" She asked Alvin.

"Voight needs you and Ruzek to go undercover."

"What for?"

"I don't know. I didn't ask questions."

"Okay, thanks Al."

"Yep."

She walked into Voight's office.

"I need a favor." He said, without looking away from his laptop.

"What is it?"

"You and Ruzek need to go undercover."

"For what?"

"To help with the investigation of the camp."

"It was burned to the ground. Why do we need to go undercover for that?"

"I had Boden examine the burn patterns. It wasn't an electrical fire, it was arson."

"Are you kidding me?!"

"I kid you not."

"Why the hell would someone do this?!"

"I don't know, I honestly don't know."

"What do we have to do?"

"There's an arson ring here in Chicago. You two go undercover in it and we'll be able to bust the person. I can almost guarantee that whoever did it has some sort of connection to that ring. Don't worry, Shay will be with you guys."

"I just hope nothing happens to us."

"Nothing should. Keep quiet about your real identity and everything should go smoothly. Got it?"

"Yes sir."

"Good. Now get down to that locker room and change clothes."

After getting in disguise, they met up with Shay in an alley. She was dressed in grungy ripped jeans, black converse and a black hoodie. Her eyes were lined heavily with eyeliner and mascara. She was leaning against a brick wall, smoking a cigarette. She wasn't a smoker, but her false identity was. When she saw Adam and Kim, she threw the cigarette on the ground and stomped it out.

"You guys ready?"

"As we'll ever be." Kim told her. They walked into the old abandoned building that was on the other side of the brick wall.

"You must be Miranda, Devynn and Timothy."

"We are." Shay said. "So, what's the dirty deed of today?"

"Camp Riverwalk is torched, I was thinking about lighting the house of the owner on fire."

"That's just sick, but I love it." Kim said, going along with the idea even though she dreaded it.

The guy handed them matches, lighters and a few cans of gasoline.

"We're going to carry it out tonight at midnight. Until then, you three are going to have a stakeout by her house. If you don't cooperate, I'll kill you. Do I make myself clear?" He yelled, getting a little too close to Kim and Leslie.

"Crystal. Now get out of my face!" Leslie yelled.

"I like that attitude. You guys succeed in this, you're in."

"Got it, boss." Adam said as the three of them walked out.

"I get that we have to go undercover, but I mean come on. Why do I have to dress like a junkie?" Shay whined.

"That's all part of being undercover, hunny." Kim laughed. She headed into the convenience store across the street to grab cigarettes. She detested smoking, but it would keep up her undercover image so no one would suspect a thing. She put the hat on along with her sunglasses and pulled the hood over her head.

"Pack of reds." She said, slamming a five dollar bill on the counter.

The guy gave her a look, but gave her what she asked for. The three of them hung around in the alley next to the house while they waited for Maria to come home. She seemed rather frightened by their appearance. They knew they were being watched, so they did what they were told. They dragged her in the house yelling a variety of threats at her. Once they were inside and out of earshot, they removed their hoods and glasses.

"What are you guys getting yourselves mixed up with?!"

"Don't worry. It's an undercover operation. We're trying to get in with the arson ring to see if we can find the person responsible for torching the camp."

"I'm just worried."

"About what?" Shay asked.

"The insurance."

"Please tell me the camp was insured." Adam looked away, getting bad thoughts in his mind.

"Do you know how hard it is to claim it? They're going to think I did it!"

"Did you?" Kim asked her, wanting to eliminate suspects.

"I would never do anything like that. That camp is everything to me. It's my home away from home."

"I'm not trying to accuse you, I just need to eliminate suspects."

"I understand."

"Can someone vouch for your whereabouts the day of the fire?"

"Yes, Kylie can."

"Kylie?" Shay raised an eyebrow.

"Ms. Danforth. I was at her house helping with the kids while her husband was at work."

After questioning her, they headed back to the district.

"What do you have for me?" Hank asked.

"They're all just a bunch of junkies who burn crap up for the sick thrill of it. We've got nothing." Shay told him.

He didn't seem too pleased with this answer.

"If we let this go, we're never going to find who did it. We are not stopping until we do. Do you hear me?!" He yelled so loud that everyone in the office heard. He nearly came flying out of his office he was so angry.

"What was that about?" Kevin asked.

"We've got nothing. Not a single clue leading to who did this. All we know is that it was someone in that group." Adam told everyone.

"Well maybe you need to get a little more into their business. Here." Antonio tossed a file over to Adam and he caught it.

He opened it to find all the information on the group's ring leader, Andrew Norton. In his file, it was told he had relation to Adrian Gish. Adrian's sister was Andrew's wife. They headed back to the abandoned building. As they opened the door, a gun was pointed right at Shay's forehead.

"I know who you guys are. You two back there are cops and this bitch is a firefighter."

"I'm actually a paramedic." She kneed the guy in the groin, grabbed the gun and whacked him in the side of the head with it. He was knocked out cold by the time she was done with him. All the other members were afraid to speak one word.

"HANDS IN THE AIR! ALL OF YOU!" Shay yelled as she scanned the room with the gun.

"We want to know who's responsible for the torching of Camp Riverwalk and want to know NOW!"
