Chapter 19

It wasn't until around five months later when she felt it was time to tell Voight. Her bump was starting to become pretty visible, she tried to hide it for as long as she could. She figured it was best to tell him now before it was too late. She covered her stomach before knocking on his office door. He motioned for her to come in.

"Everything alright, Burgess?" He asked a little concerned.

"Yeah. It's just that I have something that you should know."

"Lay it on me."

"It has to do with Ruzek."

"What about him?"

"He and I are...having a baby."

"Are you being serious or is this like the time you called out of work to go have drinks with Gabby?"

"I'm actually serious about this one." She unzipped her jacket and her bump was exposed.

"I'm not mad. You and Ruzek are good police and I want you both to be happy. If this is what makes you happy, I'm not going to stop you."

She breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you."

"But until your maternity leave, you're answering phones."

"I figured."

"He's going to have a temporary partner until then."

"Who will that be?"

He looked behind her. "Here he comes now."

In walked a man, roughly six foot in height, with blondish hair and baby blue eyes.

"Sean?!"

"Yeah it's me."

"You will be Ruzek's temporary partner until Burgess here is back from maternity leave."

Sean looked down at her. "You're pregnant?"

"Yeah."

"You and him are involved?"

She laughed. "Yeah, kinda. Long story."

"Well I will be happy to take your place until you're back from leave."

"Great."

They both walked out of the office and over to Adam.

"Adam, this is Sean. He's your temporary partner until I'm back from leave."

"Great. So Sean, where are you from?"

"I just transferred from the thirty first district. This area of town is where I'm much more familiar with."

"I only got one rule."

"What would that be?"

"I drive."

Sean laughed. "Alright man, you got it."

Adam looked at her. "Let me know how the doctor's appointment goes, okay?"

"I'll call you as soon as it's over. I promise." She kissed him before heading down the stairs. Platt stopped her.

"What?"

"Come here."

"I'm scared."

"Just come here."

She walked over to the desk. "What is it? I have a doctors appointment in twenty minutes."

"Are you pregnant?" She asked, noticing Kim's stomach appeared larger than usual.

"Yeah."

"When did this happen and with who?"

"Five months ago, and Adam."

"I thought you two hated each other?"

"When we were kids."

"Why the sudden change of heart?"

"Have you seen what he looks like? I mean, damn."

She headed to her appointment at Chicago Med. When she arrived, she was handed a clipboard with some forms on it that she had to fill out.

"Like I don't do enough of that at work." She sat down in a chair in the waiting room.

"Kim? Is that you?" A lady sitting across from her said.

She looked up. "Hi." She turned back to her paperwork.

"It's me, Megan. Leslie's sister. We went to camp together years ago. I was in your cabin."

"Oh my gosh, you were the one we stole the candy from?"

She laughed. "Yeah, that was me. So how are you?"

"Great, a little nervous for today though."

"Why?" She looked down and noticed Kim's belly.

"Oh wow! Congratulations!"

She smiled. "Thanks."

"Who's the lucky man?"

"You remember Adam?"

"The boy you had a crush on?"

"Well..."

"WHAT? No way! You and him are..."

"Not engaged if that's what you're thinking. But we are together."

"I can see he wasted no time." She laughed.

The girls exchanged laughs and memories while Kim waited for her name to be called. She followed the doctor into an exam room.

"How's everything?" She asked her.

"Everything is great, no more morning sickness."

"That's really good. I see you are scheduled for your first ultrasound today?" She looked up at Kim.

"I am. Is there a way I would be able to hear the heartbeat today?"

"Of course. I can do that right now before you go down to the lab." She dug through the top cabinet and found the monitor.

"That's odd." The Doctor said as she placed the wand on Kim's belly.

"What? Is the baby okay?"

"I'm not sure. I hear two heartbeats."

"The baby has two hearts?!"

The doctor laughed. "No, it doesn't. Let's get you down to the lab.

She shivered when the gel hit her stomach. The doctor placed the camera probe on her and started moving it around.

"Alright if you look on the screen here, in just a second you will see the baby."

Kim looked over at the monitor.

"Well well well, it looks like you're having twins."

"You can't be serious."

The doctor pointed to the screen and said "Your little boy is right there and your little girl is right next to him."

"Oh my gosh...He's going to be so happy."

"Would you like pictures?"

"Yes please."

The doctor cleaned her off and handed her the pictures.

"Congratulations again." She said, smiling as she handed the strip of pictures to Kim.

She arrived back at the district and headed upstairs. Adam and Kevin were in the break room and everyone else was out.

"Your girlfriend's back." Kevin said, nodding backwards. She walked in.

"Hey you." He wrapped his arms around her. "How did it go?"

"Everything is fine. But..." She reached into her purse and pulled out a manila envelope.

"What's this?"

"Open it."

He reached in it and pulled out the ultrasound pictures.

"Say hello to your son and daughter."

"I can't believe it...I'm going to be a father."

"Our kids are going to be very lucky to have you as their daddy."

"They'll be lucky to have you as their mommy."
