Chapter 20
01:11, 8 March 2020Finally, it was the day she had been preparing for for the last nine months. Erin took the day off to be with her in case she went into labor, since Adam was working. Since it was Saturday, Erin brought Mikayla along.
"Try not to get killed today, alright?" Erin said to Jay.
"I'll try not to."
Mikayla came running out of her room when she heard the door open.
"Don't go!" She said, grabbing Jay's arm. He picked her up.
"Daddy has to go. He'll be back later, okay?"
"I'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too."
She laid her head on his shoulder. "I love you daddy."
"I love you too, princess. But guess what you'll be doing with mommy today?"
She pulled back. "What's that?"
"You and mommy are going to be staying with auntie Kim today."
"When will she ever have those babies?"
All three of them laughed.
"They're due today."
"Yay!"
"Daddy has to go now, alright? He'll be back after work."
"Can you call me on your lunch?"
"Sure." He kissed her head and set her down. "I love you guys. See you later."
Mikayla slumped down on the couch and put cartoons on. Erin made her breakfast, but she didn't respond when it was handed to her. Erin set it down on the coffee table and sat next to her.
"What's wrong, baby girl?"
"I don't like it when daddy goes to work. It makes me sad."
"Oh baby girl, it makes me sad too, but bills need to be paid."
After breakfast, they headed over to Kim's house. She opened the door.
"Hey guys!"
She turned on cartoons for Mikayla while they talked.
"Have you and Adam decided on names yet?"
"We're naming the girl Hannah Mae and the boy is going to be Brayden Alexander."
"Oh my gosh those names are so cute!"
She smiled. "Thank you."
She hadn't eaten breakfast yet, so she headed into the kitchen to fix herself something. When she was in the middle of cutting up strawberries, a sharp pain came from inside her stomach. The knife fell from the counter and she looked down at the floor.
"I don't remember spilling anything. Oh no...Erin!"
Erin ran into the kitchen. "What?!"
"My water just broke."
Erin whipped out her phone, immediately calling for an ambulance. When they arrived at the hospital, they ran into Jay's brother, Will.
"Hey Erin."
"Kim is in labor, so it's urgent we get her a room as soon as possible."
"Of course." He said, wheeling her away in a wheelchair.
She was prepped for delivery and when her contractions started, she was asked if she wanted an epidural.
"No! Just get them out of me!" She was crying.
The rest of the unit arrived and Adam could be heard from outside her room. He came running in and held her hand.
"I'm here now. Everything will be okay."
"I'm turning your hand purple when I'm delivering."
His eyes got wide and he backed up a little. "How far along is she?" He asked, looking at the doctor.
"About three centimeters. It could be awhile before she delivers."
"Do you want me to call your parents?" Megan offered.
"Please."
Everyone else left the room so they could be alone. He stood by her bedside and held her hand. "Just think, in a little while we'll be holding our little miracles."
"This hurts so much."
"I know. It will all be over soon." He kissed her forehead and rubbed her belly to soothe her. "You're feeling all this pain now because they want to meet their mommy. They don't want to wait."
When her parents arrived, it was time for her to deliver. She could hear Leslie in the hallway and asked for her to come in.
"Kim, I'm not family."
"You've been my best friend for almost seventeen years. You're practically my sister. I want you here when I have the twins. I want them to see their godmother."
"What did you say?"
"I want you to be their godmother."
"But I thought-"
"I haven't seen my sister since I was kid. You're the closest thing I have to one."
"I was there for you when we were kids and I will continue to be there for you. You know after that summer, I never thought we would see each other again. I practically tried tracking you down because I missed you."
"Are you serious?"
"Yep." They both laughed.
"Alright, are you ready?"
Adam held one hand while Leslie held the other. Everyone else waited around in the waiting room. A few hours later, Adam and Leslie came out to the waiting room with big smiles on their faces. Everyone looked up.
"It's a boy." He said.
"And a girl." Leslie followed with.
Kim's parents followed them back into her hospital room.
"Mom, dad, I'd like to meet your grandchildren. Hannah and Brayden."
Her mother got a big smile on her face.
"They're beautiful."
Adam picked Hannah up and walked over by the window. She looked up at him with her big brown eyes.
"Hi princess, I'm your daddy. I know you can't understand me yet, but I just want you to know that I love you so much. I'll always be there for you no matter what. I've loved your mama for a very long time and it's even better now that you're here." He leaned down and gave her a gentle kiss on the head.
When the babies had fallen asleep on her chest, Adam was admiring the sight.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course. What is it?"
He dug into his pocket and took out a small square shaped box.
"Oh my gosh..."
He opened it and showed it to her. Inside was the biggest diamond on a ring she had ever seen in her life.
"I've loved you since that first day of camp. I've loved you my entire life. You mean the world to me. There's nothing I want more. Will you marry me?"
Erin and everyone else came back into the room. Gabby and Sylvie were close to crying. She looked up at him.
"Yes."
He put the ring on her finger and kissed her.
