Chapter 18
08:55, 31 March 2017She called her mom after Adam fell asleep that night. Her mother invited her over for breakfast the next morning.
"We missed you, sweetie." Her mom hugged her when she opened the door.
"Is dad home?" She asked. "I need to tell you guys something."
"In the living room!" He yelled. She went into the living room and found him sitting in the recliner, newspaper in hand.
"Hey dad. There's something I found out yesterday. I think you and mom should know about it."
"What's that?" He folded the newspaper up and set it on the end table. Her mother sat down on the couch.
"You guys remember Adam, right?"
"That little boy from camp that you had a big crush on? Of course we remember him. You never shut up about him."
"Well, he's my boyfriend now."
"I think I should formally meet this man." Her father said, sternly.
"Of course you guys will. But, that's not why I came here."
"Right, you said you had something to tell us."
"You're going to be grandparents."
Neither of them said a word for about five minutes. She was starting to regret even saying anything to them at all.
"No sweetie, we're happy. It's just that it happened so suddenly." Her father finally spoke up.
"I know. I'll always be your baby, but you can't stop me from growing up. It had to happen someday."
"I can still remember you telling me you were never having kids, and that you still thought boys were gross." Her mother joked.
They laughed.
"Adam is waiting outside, can he come in?"
"Certainly."
She went outside to get him. "You can come in now."
"Your dad doesn't have a gun on him, does he?"
"What? No! He was just joking about the whole kicking your ass thing. Come on, please?". He grabbed her hand and they went inside.
"Mom, dad, this is Adam." He seemed tense.
"Nice to meet you, sir." Her father shook his hand.
"Wow. He's a cutie!" Her mother smiled and shook his hand.
"MOM."
"So, you're the young man that my daughter is always talking about?" Her father said.
"Yes sir."
"Are you taking good care of her?"
"Yes sir, she is my number one priority."
She tried not to smile.
"Can we trust you to take care of her? Do you have a good paying job, a house, a working car?"
"Dad!"
Adam looked down at her. "Don't worry, he just wants to make sure his little girl is being taken care of." He kissed her head.
"What are your plans now that you two are expecting?"
"Well sir, I plan on requesting more hours at work to help with the expenses for the baby. I want your daughter to have the best care possible, all the way up to when she delivers."
His phone started going off and he went into the kitchen to answer it. Her parents looked at her. She had never seen them this happy before.
"If we had to pick a man for you, he's the one."
"We really are happy, mom. He said he loved me. He means everything he says."
After the visit with her parents, they stopped by the firehouse. Gabby looked up from the magazine she was reading.
"Hey girl! What brings you here?"
"I have something to tell you guys."
"What's Adam doing here?" Kelly asked, trying to make a joke, it made everyone laugh.
"Shut it, Severide."
"What's the big news?" Leslie asked as she shoved her face full of donut holes.
"I'm pregnant."
Almost everyone spit out their coffee and Leslie dropped the box of donuts she was holding.
"I can remember when you two hated each other." Otis started laughing.
"Remember when he hit her on the head with the dodgeball? That was classic!" Peter reminded him.
"Let's not forget the time she hung his boxers up on the flagpole at camp." Sylvie said, almost crying from laughing so hard.
"Guys...she's serious." Gabby immediately stopped laughing.
"You two were the last we ever expected to get together." Leslie told them.
"We're helping plan your baby shower whether you want us to or not." Sylvie, Gabby and Leslie all said at the same time.
"Do you know how far along you are?" Gabby asked.
"No, but it can't be that far. Maybe a week at most."
"I still can't believe this."
On the drive over to the district, she started feeling nauseous. He looked over at her and asked if she was okay.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Probably just morning sickness I guess."
"Are you going to tell Platt that you're pregnant?"
"You're kidding, right? She'll think I'm lying and just laugh at me."
"What about Voight?"
"No!"
"Will you at least tell Julie and all them?"
"I'm considering it, Erin already knows and so does Julie. They were the ones who told me to buy a pregnancy test."
"How do you think Kevin is going to react?"
"Not sure. He's kind of like a big brother to me. Naturally, he'll probably say he's going to kill you for touching me."
He grabbed her hand after he parked the car and looked into her eyes. "Everyone loves you here and you are going to be a great mother. There is nothing to worry about. Okay?" He kissed her forehead.
"Okay." She sighed.
When she got upstairs, she asked if Voight was around and they all shook their heads no.
"He's at some conference, probably won't be back until later." Jay said. "And before you ask, Camille is with him. Is there something you don't want him knowing?"
"There is...at least I don't want him knowing yet. I feel it's too soon for him to know."
Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at her.
"Adam and I are having a baby."
"Called it!" Erin and Julie high fived.
"Are you serious?" Antonio was in shock. "You guys hated each other. What happened?"
"Adam, you're dead." Kevin gave him the death glare.
Sheldon poked his head in from the tech room.
"Wait, who's pregnant?"
Everyone pointed to Kim.
"Who's the daddy?"
"Adam is, genius." Julie tried her best to be sarcastic.
"Oh! That's great. Congratulations guys."
"Do I have to tell Voight?" Kim worried.
"You'll eventually have to. I certainly didn't tell him right away when I found out I was pregnant. I waited until my bump started showing. He took it pretty well. I was put on desk duty until my maternity leave, which sucked. Answering phones, handing out keys to squad cars and all that jazz for eight hours straight. You'll probably end up doing that."
"Oh joy. That sounds really fun. Not." She rolled her eyes.
