Chapter 13
08:33, 29 March 2017That night Kim went to Molly's, Leslie walking in a few minutes later. Leslie grabbed two menus from behind the counter and then sat down at the table.
"I thought only employees were allowed back there?"
"I am one. I'm part owner of the bar. Remember Otis?"
"Of course. He helped us pull that truck on Kelly at camp."
"He owns part of the bar, too. Along with Hermann over there. We all bought it a couple years ago."
"That's pretty cool."
"So what's been up with you?"
"Well I was living in California for school, then I came back here last summer for the police academy. Now I work at the district."
She laughed. "You do realize who also works there, right?"
"Who?"
"Your boytoy, Adam."
"For the love of crud, we were kids. It was a crush."
"Bullcrap. You're gonna sit here and tell me you don't still have feelings for him?"
"I don't!"
"You know, lying to my face isn't helping."
"I am NOT."
Leslie laughed. "You're a horrible liar, Kim. I hope you know that."
"NO!"
"You're never gonna admit it, will you?"
"Can't admit what's not true."
"You make me laugh. You really do."
"Lets change the subject. Anyone special in your life?"
"No way. I don't have time for that."
"Any kids?"
She sadly shook her head no. "I can't get pregnant."
"Oh my...I'm sorry I brought it up."
"Don't be. The doctor said it's just not going to happen for me. I didn't do anything wrong, I just...I have bad eggs. Nothing viable."
"That's so sad...I'm sorry."
"It's okay. There's always IVF, but I absolutely hate nothing more than being stabbed with needles."
"You stab people with needles everyday."
"Well it's not me, so I'm good with it. As long as it's not me I'm all good."
After the night out with Leslie, Kim went home. She took a shower and then snuggled up on the couch in her pajamas. As she was taking out a salad bowl to make a snack mix, there was a knock on the door. She looked out the peephole and was pleasantly surprised when she saw who it was.
"Adam? What are you doing here?"
"Can we talk?"
"Uh, sure. Come in."
She shut the door behind him. "Everything okay?"
"I don't know if I'd say that."
She sat down next to him. "Want to tell me what's wrong?"
"I-I never thought I would see you again. I thought after that summer that I would never see you again. After I saw you in the office this morning, I haven't been able to stop thinking about you. I can't stop thinking about you. I-"
"I know what you're gonna say."
"You do?"
"Yeah I do."
"I've wanted nothing more than to see you again. I know we were just stupid kids, but now that we're adults..."
"You'd like to what?"
"I'd like to...you know, be a little more than that."
Kim laughed. "You haven't seen me in sixteen years, I'm really the only girl you've thought about?"
"I've had other girlfriends, but there was no one I wanted more than you."
"Then what are you waiting for?" She smirked.
He was pleased by her reaction and pulled her into his lap. "We're not telling anyone at work about this, right?"
"God no." She said, grabbing his face and kissing him.
The next morning when she woke up, she realized he was still in her bed. The alarm started going off and she kicked him out of bed.
"What was that for?" He said, still half asleep.
"We are gonna be late for work! And we are NOT gonna be seen showing up together!"
"What's so bad about that? We're old friends."
"Oh we're a lot more than friends after last night. Get your butt moving!"
"But-"
"I SAID GET MOVING."
He laughed. "Yes ma'am."
