Chapter 14

08:51, 29 March 2017

A few months later, was Kim's first day as a detective. She made sure to inspect her outfit to be sure it was appropriate. In Intelligence, denims jeans were to be worn and you could wear what ever top you chose. She put on the bracelet Adam gave her all those years ago, grabbed her keys and then headed out the door.

"Hey, Burgess! Get your behind over here!" Sargeant Platt yelled when Kim walked into the station.

"Yes Sargeant?" She said as she approached the desk.

"Be a good girl up there, or I'm putting you on crossing guard duty. Got it?"

"Yes ma'am." She smirked and turned to walk up the stairs. The door was guarded by a handprint sensor. She looked back over to the desk Sargeant.

"You just put your hand on the scanner and the door will unlock."

"Oh." She said, placing her hand on the scanner and typing in her key code.

"I swear, that woman is trying to kill me." Platt said, going back to her paperwork. Kim stepped into the Sargeant's office.

"Reporting for duty, sir."

He looked up from his computer.

"You better make sure you and Ruzek can handle this."

"He and I are just friends."

"I don't allow for relationships in my unit. Do you understand?"

"Yes sir."

"Good."

"Where's my desk?"

"Over there." He shook her hand. "Welcome to Intelligence."

"It is an honor. It truly is"

"Everyone, Kim is in our unit now. I want you to treat her with honor and respect, especially now that she's higher in ranking."

They all said hello and smiled at her.

Julie, who was digging in the file cabinet behind her desk, turned around when her name was said.

"Welcome to where the big guys work." She said.

"Thank you."

"It's great to have you up here with us."

"I'm looking forward to it."

"It's great to see you up here. But I'll let Hank do his job now." She turned back to the file cabinet.

"This is where Erin and Jay sit."

"Finally made it up to the big leagues, way to go." Erin smiled her.

"So who's who up here?"

"I'm Jay's partner, Antonio and Julie are partners, Alvin and Kevin are partners, Hank runs the unit and you're with Ruzek."

"Is that desk next to his mine?"

"Of course it is. Make yourself at home."

"Hey, Ruzek!" Voight said, balling up a piece of paper and throwing it at the back of his head.

"Huh? What?" He turned around.

"Kim is in our unit. Say hello to her." He got up from his seat and shook her hand. He noticed the bracelet on her wrist, and smiled.

"You still have that?" He asked.

"Yeah I do."

"I've really missed you."

"I missed you too."

"Alright alright, that's enough you two love birds." Kevin said.

When everyone else was out to lunch, Kim went down to the supply room. She had to to fill out the forms allowing her to carry her weapon at all times. She froze when she heard footsteps echoing behind her.

"Crap..." She whispered to herself. Suddenly, there was a hand on her shoulder. She turned around and Adam was standing there.

"Are you crazy?! Do you have ANY idea what people are going to think if they catch us down here?! Do you know what this looks like?!"

"I just came to check on you."

"Well good. You did and now you can leave."

"Someone's cranky."

"You're supposed to be out at lunch, mister. Now spying on me in the weapon supply room."

"I just wanted to check on you. You seem uneasy."

"I was only on patrol for a little while. I got moved up pretty quick. We can't start doing this because I'll be booted out as quick as I got in."

"Erin and Jay are married and they have a kid. Don't you think he would've been kicked out a while ago if Voight didn't allow relationships in the unit?"

"I like you, I really do. But I don't wanna risk losing my job if he finds out what we've been doing."

"That's why we don't tell him. It's simple as that."

"I wish it was that easy. I really do."

"He didn't even know they were together. That was until the day she came to work with a baby bump. He nearly flipped his lid and screamed at Jay for almost the entire day."

"You need to go and I need to finish this paper. Goodbye." She said, shoving him out the door and turning back to the paper. When she was done, she watched him as he walked away. There was a feeling in the pit of her stomach saying that she should have done something, but decided against it what ever it was.
