Chapter 12- An Adventure Part 2

''Where are we going, Anne?'' Gilbert asked as the pair walked through the tall green grass.

''Well nowhere, the point of an adventure is not knowing where you're headed'' Anne said as she swiftly began to run through the grass her hands touching the tip of the meadow softly and her ginger hair flowing through the wind peacefully. Gilbert smiled, Anne waved to Gilbert simulating him to run too. Gilbert chuckled and took off running, as the tip of his fingers felt the mellow grass passing by him.

They reached a tree, Anne's favorite tree. She smiled in delight as she caught eye to her friend that led to her tripping on a short rock she didn't notice,

''THUMP"

''ANNE, ARE YOU OKAY'' Gilbert said rushing in aid for the girl.

Anne laughed, she pulled Gilbert down next to her and he laughed too. They layed on the grass laughing, looking at clouds and spotting the nearby ants and bugs laying next to them.

''Gilbert'' Anne said as she looked at the funny cloud above her, it looked like slate to her.

''Yeah?'' Gilbert responded.

''What happened to your mom?'' Anne asked instantly regretting saying anything.

''I'm sorry I shouldn't have asked that.'' Anne says beginning to get up.

''No, it's okay...'' Gilbert said as Anne layed back down.

''she died giving birth to me'' Gilbert said after a long pause.

''I'm sorry...''Anne said as her voice faded.

''What about your parents?'' Gilbert asked.

''I don't know... I don't remember them or why they left me or even if they're still alive'' Anne said sadly.

''Well if they did leave you, it's their lost'' Gilbert said.

Anne smiled.

They no longer were looking at the clouds but at each other, they felt the pain in each other's eyes as if they were connected.

''Oh I almost forgot'' Anne says breaking off the stare.

She got up from the grass and began climbing the tree, Gilbert following closely behind.

''Are you sure this is safe Anne?'' Gilbert asked.

''Gilbert Blythe, the boy who was on a steam ship for a year, is afraid to climb a tree'' Anne said playfully giggling.

Gilbert chuckled.

They climbed the tree and sat on the branch looking out on the sun that was beginning to fall, the pink rays shined in Anne's face, making her face look like a glittery sunset, Gilbert's eyes light up and he smiled.

''Anne?'' Gilbert said

Anne looked away from the sunset and faced Gilbert

''Why did you ignore me on the first day of school?'' Gilbert asked, he had been wondering that question for a long time and he finally found the right moment to ask.

''There are some things, that must remain a mystery Mr.Blythe'' Anne said with a smile. Ruby would kill her if Anne told Gilbert the truth.

''You are a mystery itself Ms. Shirley-Cuthbert'' Gilbert said.

They stared at the sunset, not speaking a single word just listening to the birds and crickets nearby, afraid that if they spoke one word the moment would fade. It almost seemed as if all time paused just to stare at the sun falling.

''Remarkable'' Anne exclaimed.

''Huh?'' Gilbert said still looking at the sun

''that's the word, I was trying to find the perfect word to describe the sunset... Remarkable'' Anne stated with a smile.

They found themselves no longer looking at the sunset but found more keenness in each other's eyes. There was no Ruby, Diana or Bash. They didn't feel like they were forced to look away, it was remarkable.

After a few seconds the pair realized what was going on and broke off the stare that felt like an eternity.

''Well um we should get going'' Gilbert said clearing his throat.

''Oh yes, Marilla and Matthew will be awfully worried if I don't make it back before supper.'' Anne said taking the dirt off her skirt.

''I'll walk you home'' Gilbert said.

Anne's first thought was to say no but something held her back.

''Okay'' Anne said, noticing the surprise in Gilbert's face that she didn't resist.

They walked back to Green Gables conversing about everything that came to their minds, they were really turning in to friends, even if they didn't admit it yet.

Before they knew it, Gilbert and Anne were at the door.

''I guess I will see you tomorrow'' Anne said.

''Yes, you will'' Gilbert said trying to hide his smile.

''Anne for heavens sake, where have you been?!'' Marilla said as she walked towards the door.

''In an adventure'' Anne and Matthew said in unison.

''Oh Gilbert, how lovely of you to make sure Anne doesn't get in to any trouble.'' Marilla said noticing the boy next to Anne.

''Oh it was my pleasure, if anything I should thank Anne for letting me tag along in her adventures'' Gilbert said facing Anne.

''Well now that you're here, won't you join us for supper'' Marilla said.

''I wouldn't want to intrude'' Gilbert said.

''Fiddlesticks! You are always welcome here Gilbert, allow me to take your coat'' Marilla said as everyone entered the house.

''Thank you Ms.Cuthbert'' Gilbert responded as he sat down at the table next to Anne.

Marilla served supper and they all ate, the evening resolved in Marilla and Matthew bickering over farm work. Anne and Gilbert were the least interested, they playfully swinged their feet under the table.

It almost became a competition on who could swing their feet the longest and as most would agree competition was their specialty. They swinged with each one more bigger than the last so big that they didn't notice their feet were about to collide and though both wouldn't admit it, they felt a shock of electricity as their feet collided.

''Thank you for joining us Gilbert, please do so sometime again and bring Bash and Mary as well. They are always welcomed too.

''Thank you Ms.Cuthbert, I must be heading out now. It's getting very late and I have some studies to catch up on.'' Gilbert said as he grabbed his coat, gave Anne a friendly smile and headed out.

''Poor Gilbert, had to follow you on your adventures just because he has a crush on you.'' Marilla said as she got the dishes.

''WHAT?! That's ridiculous Gilbert Blythe does not have a crush on me! Your delusional Marilla!'' Anne says storming off the kitchen.

Marilla chuckled

''Oh denial...''Marilla muttered.
