Day 18- A temporary guardian (Part 2)
22:22, 6 September 2016"Hm..." Jellal thoughtfully rubbed his chin, as he stared at the baby in front of him.
Meanwhile, I poured some warm milk in the bottle Jellal had bought upon my request. He already had one since, not a few days ago, his baby cousin had dropped by and by chance, the bottle was forgotten in his apartment.
Like seriously, isn't this like, fate of some kind?
Me calling Jellal to bring a baby bottle!
"What are you going to do with it?" He asked.
I walked over to the baby, and gently placed the nipple in its mouth. Though, I still am in the dark as to if its a girl or a boy.
"I don't know..." I sighed, "give it to the police, maybe?"
"Hm...." Jellal carefully wiped the milk from the baby's cheeks and chuckled a little, "it's cute."
So...he loves babies?
"It is, isn't it...how could someone do such a heartless thing?"
"Well, someone might not want this baby, or someone might have been in danger to leave it near the trash cans."
"That's a possibility." I nodded.
"But, I don't think giving this fellow here to the police is the right thing, Scarlet." He looked at me.
"And why not?" I asked.
"I don't know...Its just a feeling."
"Then, what do you me to do? Keep it to myself until one of the parents comes to find it?"
"You could do that. We will post missing posters."
"You serious?!"
"Do I look like I'm joking?" He dead-panned.
"But, I don't even know how to take care my myself, how would I take care of a baby?!"
"Well, I wouldn't mind giving you a hand in changing diapers--"
"Okay, stop right there Mr. Daddy!" I took a deep breath and glanced at him, "You seriously up for this job? You know, taking care of a baby isn't a piece of cake. It's a whole lot of cake to eat."
"What?" He uttered.
I sighed, "My point is...we shouldn't take this matter into our hands. We should give it to someone professional, as in, a daycare or the hospital where they take care of missing kids, or something of the sort."
"And give explanation to the cops? Erza, even if you give the baby to anyone of these people, they will probably calls the cops first since we aren't the real guardians."
"So we tell them the truth."
"Nuh-uh...I don't trust the cops."
"What's with you and the cops?" I crossed my arms.
He averted my eyes for a second, and then caught a glimpse at the baby. "Nothing..." He uttered, "But I'm not giving him to the cops."
I groaned, "Then you want us to take care of the baby?"
"Yes."
"Seriously Fernandes?"
"I'm damn serious."
"How are you going to give what it needs huh? And you know I can't keep it with me, I have work and mom and dad will ask a dozen questions and--"
"I'm gonna keep it with me." He said. "You don't have to worry about that. I can give what it needs until one of its guardian comes."
"And how are you so sure that 'one of its guardians' will come?"
"They will." He said and glanced at the baby, "I will make sure they do."
"Can I ask you how?"
"No."
"All right...I don't know what type of connection you and the baby are having, but this little individual here is yours now."
"I'm gonna take it home then."
"But, I'm gonna look after him as well." I pouted, "After all, it's pitiable."
"Hm."
The baby had already finished drinking it's milk and was now in a state of sleepiness. Jellal carefully picked it up and rested it on its shoulders, like he had picked a dozen babies before.
"One more thing Jellal, is it a girl or a guy?"
"It's a girl."
"A girl? How do you--?"
"It's a girl." He repeated and walked past me.
"Okay, whatever you say..." I muttered.
"Goodnight Scarlet."
"Goodnight Fernandes, and thank you!"
He glanced at me impassively for a second or two, and left the room.
