Chapter 8

07:57, 26 May 2024

Olivia woke up the next morning with a start. She had had a nightmare and was drenched in sweat.

"You okay?" Callie asked.

Olivia looked over at her. She picked up her phone.

"You shouldn't have talked to Sara yesterday." Olivia typed into her voice app.

"Did something happen afterwards yesterday?" Callie asked. Olivia sighed before typing.

"Liam showed up at the pizza place my friends and I went to last night." She typed. "And he threatened me."

"He found me at Wyatt's party through my pictures on Instagram." Callie said. "Can I ask you something?"

Olivia nodded.

"Did he rape you?" Callie asked. "While we were living with them?"

"Why would you ask me something like that?" Olivia typed.

"Just a hunch." Callie replied.

"You too?" Olivia questioned.

"Yeah." Callie said.

"I had a nightmare about him last night." Olivia typed.

"I'm sorry, Olivia." Callie said.

"I need to get ready." Olivia typed. "I have my first swim practice with the team today."

Callie nodded.

After she finished getting ready, Olivia walked past Brandon's room and saw he was awake through his open door. She stood in his doorway for a moment before he noticed her.

"Hey." He greeted.

"Can I talk to you?" Olivia asked.

"Sure." Brandon said. "What's up?"

Olivia typed into her notes instead of her voice app. She didn't want Callie knowing she was having this conversation with Brandon.

"What are you doing with Callie?" She asked.

"What do you mean?" Brandon asked.

"Why do you care so much about whether she dates Wyatt or not?" Olivia questioned.

"I don't." Brandon replied.

"Brandon, I heard what you said to her after date with Wyatt the other night." Olivia continued. "Do you think the two of you could date each other?"

Brandon was quiet.

"Because here's what would happen if you two did." Olivia explained. "Either they'd send all three of us away because they promised they wouldn't split us up. And I'd be really pissed because this is one of the best homes we've been in. Or they'd split us up and have Callie go to another home. Foster siblings aren't allowed to date each other. Understand?"

Brandon nodded. "I'm sorry." He said. "I'll back off."

"Thank you." Olivia typed before leaving the room.

A little bit later, Olivia was at swim practice.

"Hey." Erin greeted her.

Olivia waved to her. She noticed Adam in the stands.

"Are you on the swim team too?" Olivia typed.

"No. I'm part of the band. " Adam answered. "We had a break in practice and I like watching Erin swim."

"What instrument do you play?" Olivia typed.

"Trumpet." Adam replied.

"Nice." Olivia typed.

"Are you okay after the other night?" Erin asked.

"Yeah, I'm alright." Olivia typed.

"Who was that guy?" Adam asked.

"No one." Olivia lied.

The siblings looked at each other, but didn't push it.

"Do you want to hang out sometime again?" Adam asked, changing the subject.

"Sure." Olivia typed.

She put her phone in her bag and got ready for practice.

When practice ended, Olivia saw Stef waiting. She had dropped Olivia off earlier.

"See you later, Olivia." Erin and Adam said as they left.

Olivia waved to them before heading over to Stef.

"Hey." Stef greeted. "How was practice?"

"It was good." Olivia typed.

"I have some things I need to do before heading home." Stef said. "Do you want to come with me or do you want me to drop you back off at the house? We can stop for lunch."

"Sounds good to me." Olivia typed. They headed out to the car.

"What things do you need to do?" Olivia asked.

"Once a month, I buy groceries for my father and bring them over to him." Stef explained. "If I didn't, he'd live off of tv dinners. Which isn't healthy."

Olivia nodded.

After they went to the grocery store, they headed to a small house.

"Dad, it's me." Stef called as they came through a sliding back door.

An older man walked into the kitchen.

"You don't have to get my groceries for me." He said.

"Yes, I do." Stef said. "Dad, this is Olivia. Lena and I started fostering her and her siblings. Olivia, this is my father, Frank."

Olivia just waved.

Stef and Frank started talking and Olivia looked around the house, but she could hear the conversation.

After Stef finished talking with her father, the two went to a diner to grab something to eat. Stef could tell that Olivia wanted to say something.

"Olivia, I know you were able to hear what my father and I were discussing." She said.

"I wasn't trying to eavesdrop." Olivia typed.

"No. I know that." Stef said. "But, if you had any questions you can ask them."

"It's none of my business." Olivia typed.

"It's really okay." Stef said. "I don't mind."

"So, your Dad didn't approve of you liking girls?" Olivia asked.

"No." Stef said.

"But, you were married to a guy and had a son with him." Olivia continued.

"I guess it just what was expected of me." Stef replied.

"I need to tell you something?" Olivia typed. "Unrelated to what we were talking about before."

"What is it?" Stef asked.

Olivia sighed and started typing into her notes instead of her voice app.

"Two years ago, Callie, Jude, and I were in a really good group home. Like yours and Lena's."She started. "The parents had older son who was 18. He spent a lot of time making me feel welcome, I guess."

Stef noticed a few tears running down Olivia's face. She could tell where she was going with this.

"Olivia, you don't have to finish explaining it." Stef said, gently taking her hand. "Is it alright if I ask how old you were?"

"Fourteen." Olivia typed. "I'm pretty sure he did it with Callie, too."

"Is there a reason you're bringing it up now?" Stef asked.

"There's a girl in our foster group who is living with them." Olivia explained. "I didn't want to engage, but Callie and started just talking to the girl. Everything was fine until Callie let Liam's name slip out when the girl hadn't mentioned his name."

"What are you leaving out?" Stef asked.

"Later that night, Liam found me at the pizza place I was at with my friends and he threatened me about talking to the girl." Olivia added. "Callie said he threatened her too."

"Why don't we finish talking about this back at the house." Stef suggested. "Where it's a little more private."

Olivia nodded.

They finished eating and headed back to the house.
