Chapter 56

( A/n: Part 2 of What Flies Beneath )

Meryl was at her house with her dragons, in the unconscious Liv's room, brushing Liv's hair while talking to herself.

Meryl: I swear sometimes Hiccup gets on my nerves. I know Toothless can't fly and he could get killed, but he told us to back off. What am I supposed to do, ignore Toothless's wishes?! ( Sighs ) But... Hiccup does have a point...

Meryl thinks for a moment before she walked out of the room with a serious expression.

( The next morning, in the woods )

Meryl was in the woods, and was tracking the Whispering Death and Toothless down.

Meryl: Okay, Meryl, we just need to find Toothless or the Whispering before he finds the Whispering Death and possibly get himself killed. I hope the others won't be too upset that I left without leaving a note.

Little did Meryl know that she wasn't the only one that was in the woods looking for the Whispering Death...

( While with the other riders, at the academy )

Onyx lands Fáfnir at the entrance of the academy with Goofball and Evergreen on Fáfnir's back with him, and Onyx ran into the academy just as his friends decided to go find the Whispering Death.

Astrid: ( to Onyx: ) There you are, what took- ( noticed how panicked Onyx was ) What's wrong?

Onyx: Meryl's gone and Goofball said that she went to help Toothless with the Whispering Death!

The Riders: What?!

Hiccup: Oh, Thor, what is she thinking?

Onyx: I have no idea! We need to find them fast!

( Meanwhile, in one of the whispering death tunnels )

Tida is seen walking in the tunnels with a smile, she had accidentally fell into the tunnel system again when she sneaked off to follow her siblings. She then heard rumbling, and turned to see the Whispering Death right behind her, looking at her with a growl.

Tida: ( giggles and reached her hands up to the giant, scary looking legless dragon ) Kitty!

The Whispering Death then purred at the small toddler as Tida gave it a hug.

( Slight Time Skip )

The Riders landed on the ground in the woods with holes in the ground, and Onyx sniffed the air. Hiccup was on Goofball's back with Evergreen landing beside them.

Onyx: This is where Whispering Death scent ends, but there's also another scent with it, it's small and has a hint of ( sniffs ) ( confused: ) fish oil?

Hiccup: Toothless?! Meryl?!

Snotlout: How do we even know the Whispering Death made these holes?

Astrid: ( to Snotlout, sarcastically: ) So you think it might be the other 2,500 pound, rock eating dragon we're following?

Snotlout: I know what you're- Don't try to confuse me.

Onyx then picked up something from the ground, it was a Whispering Death tooth.

Onyx: Look at this.

Onyx shows the tooth to the riders.

Hiccup: He must've lost a tooth.

Tuffnut: Is it sharp? If it is, I want it! I like sharp!

Ruffnut: Yeah, sharp is good!

Fishlegs: Think about this: hundreds of those spinning together, ripping through dirt and tree roots. Discarding rock like it's not even there!

Tida: ( off-screen, echo-y: ) ( laughs ) Kitty!

Tuffnut: Uh... Am I going crazy or did anyone else hear Tida's voice?

The dragons started acting up to their rider's confusion as they continue to hear the laughter of the Thorston Scalewalker toddler. Onyx began to protectively growl, adding to the riders' confusion.

Astrid: Stormfly, Onyx, what's wrong?

Tuffnut: ( to Barf and Belch: ) What's wrong with you?

Ruffnut: Barf, settle down!

Hiccup: Stop! Listen...

All the riders could hear was the sound of Tida's laughter coming from inside the hole.

Tuffnut: Listen for what?! My sister's laughter coming out of nowhere?!

Astrid: Be quiet!

Tuffnut: How are we supposed to hear anything over her yelling-

Onyx: Shh! Listen...

Fishlegs's eyes widened in panic and fear as they heard a whispering sound mixed in with the sound of Tida's laughter.

Fishlegs: The whisper...

The ground started violently shaking.

Snotlout: Looks like we beat Meryl and Toothless.

Astrid: ( with a hint of fear: ) Yeah... We win...

Fishlegs: I'm not feeling like a winner!

The Whispering Death emerges from the ground and growls at Fishlegs, Tida can be seen on the dragon's head, completely fine and was having the time of her life while holding on to one of the spines on its head.

Tida: ( happily: ) Kitty!

Fishlegs: ( to the Whispering Death, scared: ) Hi... um... I like the teeth...

The Whispering Death burrows back underground with Tida still on its back.

Tuffnut: I don't know if I should be worried for or proud of Tida right now.

Ruffnut: Proud.

Tuffnut: Definitely.

Snotlout: I hate it when he does that! ( To Fishlegs: ) Can you at least tell me why he does it?!

Fishlegs: Maybe to hunt...? Maybe because it's cooler...? Maybe to look for water...? AND MAYBE BECAUSE HE CAN'T STAND THE PRESSURE OF EVERYBODY ALWAYS EXPECTING HIM TO HAVE THE ANSWERS!

Tuffnut: He's losing it.

Ruffnut: I know... It's awesome.

The Whispering Death emerges from the ground again, and Tida giggled as she shook off some dirt that was in her hair.

Tuffnut: Somebody hold it still. I wanna pet it, Tida's getting all the fun!

Onyx: ( to Hiccup, a bit worried: ) Do you actually have a plan, or are you just trying to get yourself killed?

Hiccup: If I can train it, it'll leave Toothless alone. If Tida did it, so can I.

Snotlout: Right, so you are trying to get yourself killed?

The Whispering Death charges at Hiccup, but stops in front of Hiccup's outstretched hand. The dragon sniffs it and turns away, going back into the ground with Tida, who was still having the time of her life on the dragon.

Hiccup: ( looks at the ground ) Okay.

Onyx: I know what you are thinking, Hiccup, before you do it, think about what Meryl would-

Hiccup jumps down into the hole.

Onyx: Think. Oh, Meryl would probably kill him for doing something that could get him killed again.

Astrid: No kidding. Why does he always do that?

Fishlegs: Oh, man. I am so glad I'm not down there with him right now.

Snotlout then pushed Fishlegs down into the hole.

Snotlout: Oops.

Onyx: Seriously, Snotlout?

Snotlout: Why not? It can't be that dangerous, Tida sounded like she was having the time of her life with it down there.

Tuffnut: That's because she's me and Ruff's sister. A future agent of chaos and destruction in the making.

Onyx: Okay, note to self, keep the twins away from Liv when we rescue her from the Outcasts.
