Chapter 55

( A/n: Part 1 of What Flies Beneath )

Tida as a dragon was trapped in a hole with Bucket. Toothless sniffs and then growls angrily at the hole on the surface. Mrs. Thorston and Mr. Thorston was standing with Stoick, Gobber, their son and daughter, and the other Dragon Riders and their dragons while looking at the hole, worrying about their two year old Scalewalker daughter. Onyx sniffs the air and also begins to growl at the hole, Astrid looks at him with a raised brow.

Hiccup: ( to Toothless: ) Whoa, hey! Come on, it's just a hole, bud.

Meryl: That ain't a hole, Hiccup, it's a pit.

Bucket: It's not just a hole or a pit! It's like an underground village!

Mrs. Thorston: I don't care what it is! Just get my baby out of there!

Mulch: Bucket! There you are. I've been lookin' for you all night!

Bucket: Sorry, Mulch. But I think I finally found it: My happy place!

Bucket and Tida were then thrown out of the hole in a cloud of dust. Mr. Thorston quickly caught Tida before she could fall to the ground.

Mrs. Thorston: Oh, Thor. What was that. Ruff! Tuff!

Ruffnut: That wasn't us, Mom!

Tuffnut: I wish that was us- ( sees that both his parents were sternly glaring at him ) Joking!

Stoick: Are you alright, Bucket?

Bucket: Not so happy anymore.

Stoick: What happened?

Bucket: Something pushed me out! Something's down there. Something big!

Toothless growls and jumps down the hole, and a strange sound is heard.

Meryl: Toothless! What are you doing?! You get your tail back up here! ( Sees grabs Evergreen as she was about to jump in after Toothless ) Don't you even think about it, young death!

Astrid: What is that sound?

Onyx: Something bad.

Gobber: Eh, whatever it is, it's giving me the willies.

Then a dragon, Meryl knew was called a " Whispering Death ", shoots out of the hole and hovers over the Vikings.

Meryl: Holy scales!

Onyx: ( to Meryl: ) Meryl! Language, there's a child here. ( Gestures to Tida )

Snotlout: Whoooooaaaaa, look at the size of that thing!

Fishlegs: Do I have to?!

Astrid: Dragons! Everyone!

The Riders quickly go on their dragons, and Meryl pulls Hiccup up onto Goofball with her, and Hiccup holds onto Evergreen.

Snotlout: Uh, I don't like the way it's eyeballing me.

Fishlegs: Uh, don't worry, it's not just you.

Snotlout: Thanks, big relief!

The Whispering Death dives back into the ground.

Astrid: What...was...that?

Tuffnut: Whatever it was, I want one!-

Mrs. Thorston: ( off-screen: ) No!

Tuffnut: Aw.

Fishlegs: If I had to take a guess, I'd say that was a Whispering Death.

Tuffnut: Whoa, great name. So much better than Zippleback.

Meryl and Onyx then heard a sound that the Vikings couldn't hear coming from underneath them.

Bucket: Where'd it go?-

Meryl: 4...

Bucket: Why's it here?-

Meryl: 3...

Bucket: What's it gonna do to us?!-

Meryl: 2...

Bucket: ( to Meryl: ) WHY ARE YOU COUNTING?!

Meryl: 1.

The Whispering Death bursts from the ground, making a fresh hole in the ground. Mr. Thorston stood in front of his wife with Tida in his arms, and glared protectively at the Whispering Death.

Gobber: ( to the riders: ) Ah, it looks angry. Why don't you do that thing where you touch its nose and feed it grass?

Hiccup: Okay! Uh, Fishlegs, what do we know about the Whispering Death?

Fishlegs: Boulder Class; Razor sharp teeth, incredibly strong, hunts from underground.

Tuffnut: Now I really want one!

Mrs. Thorston: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT, MISTER!

Snotlout: So, how do we deal with this thing?

Stoick: Stand back, everyone!

Stoick arrives riding on Thornado, who bellows at the intruder.

Stoick: Thornado's got something to say to this beast!

Thornado roars at the dragon, but it quickly roars back, unaffected.

Gobber: I don't think it's got its listening ears on.

Astrid: Alright, let's run this thing out of here!

Toothless then emerges from the hole and growls at the resident dragons, Meryl, and Onyx to back off, which they did.

Snotlout: What is Toothless doing?!

Meryl: He wants us to back off.

Fishlegs: No problem here.

Hiccup: Toothless!

Toothless and the Whispering Death started to fight, but Toothless is unable to get airborne. Meryl watched with worry, but she, Goofball, and Evergreen continued to back off from the fight, but on the other hand, Hiccup...

Hiccup: Toothless can't fly without me! He's a sitting duck!

Stoick: Gobber, man the catapults, and when that thing is clear of Toothless, Fire!

Hiccup: Dad, wait! ( To Toothless: ) Just let me help you, bud.

Hiccup tries to get on Toothless's back, but Toothless doesn't let him.

Hiccup: What? Toothless, wha-what's wrong?

Astrid: What was that all about?

Hiccup: I have no idea.

Meryl: Hiccup, we need to bac-

The Whispering Death injures Toothless with a razor-sharp spine that drives itself into his leg.

Stoick & Onyx: ( at the same time: ) Gobber!

Gobber launches a boulder at the Whispering Death and it retreats down the hole, carving a new path underground.

Hiccup: ( to Toothless: ) Oh, no, you're hurt!

Toothless allows Hiccup to remove the spike from his leg, then runs away.

Hiccup: Toothless, wait!

Astrid: Where's he going?

Snotlout: Probably running away to lick his wounds. ( Laughs )

Evergreen charged at Snotlout, and headbutts his stomach, making Snotlout groan in pain. Meryl stood there in silence as she waited for the right time to talk and she rubbed her arm nervously, Onyx noticed that Meryl's behavior.

Hiccup: ( to Snotlout: ) That's not funny! He could've been killed. He can't fly, remember?

Snotlout: And whose fault is that?

Astrid: Seriously, did you just go there?

Snotlout: Hey, I call it like I see it. And let's not forget ( puts his hand on Meryl's shoulder, without asking ) that's how he met Meryl-

Meryl then punched Snotlout in the stomach and backed away from him with a growl.

Snotlout: ( groans in pain ) Right, only Hiccup can do that without getting punched. ( Groans ) She's got a good punch. Someone get Gothi, I think she broke something.

Onyx: In ten minutes.

Fishlegs: Um, does anyone want to talk about what is the name of Thor just happened?

Tuffnut: Uh, dragon fight? Just another day on Berk.

Fishlegs: Uh, not really. It seemed like there was way more to it than that.

Hiccup: He's right. The Whispering Death singled Toothless out.

Astrid: And Toothless wanted that dragon all to himself.

Hiccup: Yeah, he certainly did. But why?

Tuffnut: Uh, are we going to be tested on this, because I'm completely confused.

Ruffnut: Well, don't look at me.

Meryl: We need to back off and let Toothless handle it.

The Riders: What?!

Hiccup: Meryl, it could've killed Toothless and Toothless can't-

Meryl: ( to Hiccup: ) I know, but Toothless wants us to back off. So, how about you take a break from almost getting yourself killed and listen to Toothless.

Hiccup: No, Toothless can't fight that thing on his own. I need to-

Meryl: No, you don't, Hiccup. He told us to back off. If he wants to deal with this by himself, we need to respect his wishes.

Hiccup: You're joking, right, Meryl? You can't be serious.

Meryl: What if I am?

The other riders stare in silence as Hiccup and Meryl begin to argue with each other. Goofball then picked Evergreen up and started carrying her back home to keep her away from the couple's argument.

Onyx: ( whispers to the others: ) I think we are witnessing a couple's fight.
