Chapter 42
06:05, 30 June 2023( A/n: Part 2 of Heather Report part 1 )
( In the morning )
Meryl was making breakfast for her and Heather while Goofball and Evergreen were eating their breakfast. Heather walked in and was in slight shock as Meryl put the food on the two plates she'd prepared for her and Heather.
Meryl: Morning! I made Salmon and eggs. I figured it's best we eat before meeting with the others.
Heather: Wow. Thanks. It smells great.
Meryl: No problem. Plus, I usually don't get the chance to cook for anyone anymore.
Heather sat down and took a bite, and her eyes widened slightly.
Heather: This is really good.
Meryl: Thanks, my mom taught me everything I know about cooking.
Heather: Is it okay for me to ask what happened to them?
Meryl: Yeah. It's fine... ( Sits down ) My Dad was killed by a dragon hunter. And I had gotten separated from my mom when the hunters that killed my father, found us. I was just a kid... I, uh, took shelter in the woods here. It took awhile for me to fully become a part of Berk, but a lot of people are very nice here. Let's eat up before going out.
Once they finished breakfast, the girls and the dragons walked outside. Meryl helped Heather on Goofball's back, and Evergreen hopped on Goofball's back behind Heather.
Meryl: Ready for your first visit to the Dragon Training Academy, Heather?
Heather: As I'll ever be. Sorry, I'm still getting used to Vikings riding dragons, and are okay with Scalewalkers living with them.
Meryl: Yeah, you're not the only one. I'm still getting used to viking life. Heck, I'm still learning how to read. While we're on the way there, I'll give you a tour. Hold on.
Goofball then takes off the ground and began flying.
( At the Academy )
The Riders were waiting for Meryl, Heather, and her dragons. The twins were more focused on the Scalewalker toddler, trying to figure out a name for her. Fishlegs had the book of dragons.
Ruffnut: Skull Ripper?
Tuffnut: Nah, too skully. Mayday?
Ruffnut: Nope. Too pretty sounding.
Tuffnut: You're right, her name has to be something powerful, yet simple, maybe water themed...
Onyx: ( to the Twins: ) You do realize that you're a naming a child, not a animal?
Tuffnut: Yes. If she was a animal, we would be thinking of animal names like Dave, and Johnny.
Onyx raised his brow at them in disbelief.
Astrid: Where is Meryl? She's usually never late.
Hiccup: There she is.
Meryl and her dragons then arrived at the academy with Heather. Astrid looks at Heather with an untrustful look.
Meryl: Hey guys. What did I miss?
Hiccup: Nothing much.
Astrid: So, Heather? Sleep well?
Heather: Very well. Thank you, Astrid. ( Looks around ) So... This is it? The Dragon Training Academy.
Meryl: Yep. The one and only.
Hiccup: We've been training the dragons to become part of our everyday lives. Meryl and Onyx also sometimes teach us some things about Scalewalkers.
Fishlegs: And it all goes right here.
Heather: Really? Everything?
Fishlegs: Mmm, yep. I'm kind of the Log Keeper. Log Master, really.
Snotlout: He writes down what Hiccup and Meryl yells him to.
Fishlegs: I give it my own spin, thank you.
Heather: Can I see it?
Astrid then takes the book of dragons before Fishlegs could hand it to Heather, which caused Meryl to glare at her slightly. Onyx knew why Astrid was acting distrustful of Heather, as he found Heather's presence also odd.
Astrid: I'll take that, thank you. Excuse us.( Grabs Hiccup and Meryl and takes them to the side. ) Hiccup, Meryl, I don't think we should be showing her all our dragon and Scalewalker secrets.
Meryl crossed her arms in response with a raised brow and a slight glare.
Hiccup: Astrid, it's fine.
Astrid: I don't trust her. You two shouldn't either-
Meryl: Well, we do. And you should trust us.
Onyx then tries to ease the tension happening, by changing the topic.
Onyx: ( clears throat, gaining everyone's attention ) Me and Meryl found out what kind of Scalewalker the dragonet is.
Fishlegs: ( excitedly: ) Really?!
Heather: There's different kinds?
Meryl: ( to Heather, with a smile: ) Yes. I'm a hybrid between a IceFang and a SandStriker. Onyx, here is a NightStalker. And the little girl is also a hybrid.
Tuffnut & Ruffnut: Cool!
Hiccup: Between what kinds of Scalewalker?
Meryl: A SeaDiver and a... IceFang. That's why her tongue is blue.
Onyx: IceFangs' tongue are blue in both dragon and human forms.
Meryl: It's a trait, I didn't inherit. But the dragonet did.
Heather: Wow. IceFangs sound powerful. So do SandStrikers.
Meryl: Yeah. IceFangs are powerful, in tundra habitats. SandStrikers are one of the most powerful kind of Scalewalker, because of their venom. My venom is not as deadly though.
Onyx: SeaDivers are incredibly powerful in the water, though they are shorter than the other kinds, they have exceptional night vision, and powerful tails.
Fishlegs grabbed the book of dragons from Astrid and began writing what Onyx was saying about SeaDivers down. Heather listened with interest as the Scalewalker toddler was now playing with Evergreen in the background.
Onyx: They are able to breath and see underwater and use their tails, wings, and webbed talons to swim. Their claws are curved like fishhooks to help them swim, and their tails can be used to batter opponents or create huge waves. SeaDivers often ride currents to travel the ocean faster. Any physical wounds they receive, such as burns, can be healed by ocean water. The stripes on a SeaDiver dragons' bodies are used to converse underwater. They can control when the stripes on their bodies glow and can light up each one individually. Different combinations can mean anything in their language.
Meryl: But, because of the dragonet having the eyes and tongue of an IceFang, there's a high possibility that she can see through snow like I can, and she probably cannot breathe fire.
Heather: Wow... Could it be how she got here-
Meryl shakes her head " no " with a sad expression.
Onyx: We... Found a small boat with a blanket inside... She didn't swim here... There's a catch that she... was shipped into the sea by her family, in hopes of her...
Astrid: To be found by someone that'll keep her safe...
Onyx and Meryl sadly nodded their heads in agreement, making the viking teens' hearts sink.
Meryl: I wish I could say that it doesn't always happen...
Tuffnut: I got it!
They look at him in disbelief, as Tuffnut picks the Scalewalker toddler with a smile.
Tuffnut: Everyone meet.... Tida Thorston! Pronounced, Tide-a.
Ruffnut: I love it.
Onyx: It's better than Skull Ripper.
Meryl: Excuse me, Skull what?!
Hiccup: ( to the twins, trying to change the subject: ) So, your parents are okay with you two keeping her?
Ruffnut: Yep. She's now our new little sister.
Tuffnut: At first they didn't like the idea because they didn't know how to handle a Scalewalker child, but she soon won their hearts in a matter of seconds. They couldn't say no to not keeping her. I mean, look at her.
The Scalewalker toddler, now known as Tida, cutely makes a chirp sound with a smile in response.
Heather: She is adorable. The purple hair makes her more cute.
Onyx: Yeah, born Scalewalkers' hair color sometimes matches the color of their dragon scales.
Tida then made another chirping sound with a smile.
Snotlout: Uh, why is she chirping?
Meryl: It's normal for dragonets to mimic animal sounds when they are toddlers. My parents said I used to mimic wolf howls.
Onyx: My mom said that I used to, uh.... Nevermind.
Snotlout: No, no. What was it?
Heather and the riders looked at Onyx with curiosity.
Onyx: ( sighs ) I used to mimic cat meows okay?!
The twins and Snotlout burst into laughter, which caused Onyx to blush in embarrassment. Heather and Meryl both stiffened a laugh. Tida looked at her adoptive older siblings with confusion.
Astrid: ( pats Onyx's shoulder ) Don't worry. I think it's cool, Onyx.
