Chapter 41

( A/n: Part 1 of Heather Report part 1 )

The some of  Dragon Riders were at the academy, they were timing Toothless's speed. Once Hiccup and Toothless got back to the academy, Evergreen roared happily at them. Meryl chuckled at the baby Green Death's cuteness. Onyx was with Fáfnir, outside at the academy's entrance as they were watching.

Hiccup: ( to Fishlegs: ) So? How'd we do?

Fishlegs: Technically, you and Toothless are both still the fastest, but someone, and I won't mention who is gaining significant round.

Hiccup: What?

Hiccup looked at the twins and Barf and Belch.

Tuffnut: Don't look at us.

Hiccup then looked at Meryl. Goofball was trying to eat a rock that could barely fit in his mouth again.

Meryl: As flattering as it is for you to think it's me and Goofball, dear. It's not us.

Hiccup then looked at Astrid, who was smiling calmly as she petted Stormfly.

Hiccup: How can that be? How can Toothless be getting slower?

Fishlegs: He's not. Stormfly's getting faster.

Hiccup: Oh, really? Is that so? Anything you'd like to share, Astrid?

Astrid: Let's just say I'm experimenting with what she eats. Apparently, it's working.

Stormfly burped in agreement with Astrid's statement.

Snotlout and Hookfang then flew into the Academy.

Snotlout: ( excitedly: ) Whoo! Ha-ha! Whoo! You will not believe what I just found!

Tuffnut: A severed head?

Ruffnut: Our cousin, Lars?

Tuffnut: Our cousin Lars' severed head?

Fishlegs: Lars died?

Tuffnut: Who said that?!

Snotlout: Um, excuse me? Do you guys want to see this, or not?

The riders then followed Snotlout and Hookfang to one of Berk's many beaches, to a wrecked ship.

Tuffnut: Huh. A wrecked boat on Berk? Yeah, that's something new.

Snotlout: Just remember, I saw it first, so it's mine.

The riders then looked what was in the wrecked boat. Astrid, Fishlegs, Onyx, and Hiccup held back gasps as the group saw a unconscious girl. Meryl's eyes widened in worry.

Tuffnut: Whoa! Now I like the boat.

Snotlout: Remember, I get to keep her-

Meryl punched Snotlout in the face for his statement with a annoyed expression.

Meryl: She's a living being, Snotlout. That you are staying away from.

Meryl then crept over to the unconscious girl, and gently shook her.

Meryl: ( softly: ) Hey, hey...

The girl slowly and groggily opened her eyes, and seeing unfamiliar faces, she yelped and backed away.

Hiccup: ( to the girl: ) It's okay.

Meryl: ( to the girl, soothingly: ) We're friends.

Mystery Girl: ( coughs ) ( to Meryl and Hiccup: ) D-do you have any water?

Hiccup was about to hand her his canteen of water when, Fishlegs, Tuffnut, and Snotlout tried to shove their way in and begin fighting over who got to give the girl water. Astrid, Onyx, and Meryl rolled their eyes at the three boys, and Evergreen used her tail to trip the three. Meryl then grabs her canteen and hands it to the girl.

Meryl: ( to the girl: ) Sorry about them. Here.

Mystery Girl: Thank you. ( Takes a sip ) W-where am I?

Meryl: This is Berk.

Then suddenly, Toothless and Goofball decided to try to poke their heads in, Evergreen just walked in and went towards the girl with curiosity. The girl yelped and backed away, making the baby Green Death confused about why the new human was scared of her.

Meryl: ( to the night fury and Egg biter: ) Hey, you two, back up. ( Looks at Evergreen ) Evergreen, give her some space, girl.

Evergreen whines before she walked back to Meryl.

Hiccup: ( to the girl: ) Do-don't be afraid! They won't hurt you.

Meryl: ( calmly to the girl: ) Come out. It's okay.

Meryl extends her hand to the girl to try to coax her out as Hiccup was getting Toothless and Goofball give them a little space. A little hesitant, the girl crept over to Meryl and takes her hand. The girl watched as Hiccup was getting the two dragons to give her space, while Evergreen nuzzled Meryl's leg and looked up at the new girl.

Mystery Girl: ( to Meryl and Hiccup: ) How did you do that?

Snotlout: That? That's nothin'. Watch this. Hookfang, get your butt over here!

Hookfang just ran away, making Snotlout let out a nervous chuckle.

Snotlout: We'll be back. Jokester. Oh! And just so you know, I'm the one that rescued you.

Meryl: ( to the girl, glaring at Snotlout: ) He also has a brian that is the size of a flea.

The girl chuckled at Meryl's statement while Snotlout glared at the red haired girl.

Hiccup: And I would be Hiccup. ( Gesturing to Meryl and his friends ) The girl with the bright blue eyes is Meryl, my girlfriend. And these are our friends. ( To the riders: ) Why don't you introduce yourself, guys?

Onyx: ( to the girl, calmly and respectfully: ) I'm Onyx. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss.

Fáfnir tilts his head at the new human in curiosity.

Fishlegs: Fishlegs, at your service. You're free to approach me if you need anything.

Mystery Girl: ( gives Fishlegs a small smile ) Thanks.

Tuffnut: Hello, pretty lady! I'm Tuff-

Ruffnut shoves her twin brother.

Ruffnut: Hey! Who said it was your turn to introduce yourself? I'm the oldest, so I get to go first!

The twins then began arguing, and started fighting each other.

Meryl: Those are the twins. Tuffnut and Ruffnut.

Mystery Girl: Aren't you going to stop them?

Meryl: ( honestly: ) Don't worry. They'll tire themselves out soon. They do this a lot...daily...every ten minutes.

Astrid: Astrid...

Meryl: ( to the girl: ) And your name...?

Heather: I'm Heather.

Snotlout: A beautiful name for a beautiful girl.

Meryl glared at Snotlout, and Evergreen headbutts Snotlout in the gut, causing him to groan in pain and hold his stomach.

Astrid: All right, now that we're all acquainted. Can you tell us what happened to you?

Heather: My... family and I were on our way to our home island when our boat was attacked by pirates.-

Tuffnut: I wanna be a pirate!-

Everyone looked at him in shock and disbelief, while Meryl was giving him a death glare.

Tuffnut: Or a fish cleaner. I'm still on the fence.

Astrid: ( clears her throat ) ( to Heather: ) You were saying?

Heather: They attacked our boat and took us back to our island, laying siege to it. ( Takes a deep breath ) I was able to escape, but my mother and father, they weren't so lucky.

Hearing this made Meryl's heart sink, as she knew what it was like to lose a family.

Tuffnut: Stupid pirates! I'm definitely gonna be a fish cleaner.-

Evergreen headbutts Tuffnut in the gut, making him fall backwards to the ground in pain.

Tuffnut: Ow! I'm very much hurt!

Hiccup: ( to Heather: ) Hey, everything's gonna be okay. My dad's the chief. We'll figure something out.

Meryl: ( to Heather: ) Until then, you can stay with me.

Snotlout: What?! Why?!-

Meryl: Because I know how it feels to lose a mother and father.

Heather: ( to Meryl, gratefully: ) Thank you. ( Looks at the riders ) I'm glad you're all helping me. Thank you.

As they were about to go back to the village with Heather riding with Meryl, they heard a " thump " sound, and turned to see that a little girl with purple hair, stormy gray eyes, ivory pale skin, and wearing a white dress and no shoes, was playing with Barf and Belch's tail. The little girl looked to look not much older than two years old.

Little girl: ( looks up at the teens ) ( speaks baby talk )

Heather: Um, is she one of kids in your village?

Meryl: Nope.

Ruffnut: Aw. ( To the toddler: ) Where did you come from?

Tuffnut: And why does she have purple hair?

Onyx: ( his eyes widened ) Um, guys...

The toddler then reached her arms up to the twins with an open smile, revealing that she had a blue tongue, causing the riders and dragons to look at her in shock.

Onyx: It's a dragonet!

Snotlout: A what?

Meryl: It's what we Scalewalkers call our young.

Heather: Scalewalkers? I thought those were just myths?

Meryl: Nope. Me and Onyx here are both Scalewalkers. And it seems, this little one is one too. But, where's her parents?

The twins then got off their dragon, and Ruffnut picks the toddler up.

Ruffnut: Dibs!

Onyx: That's a child!

Fishlegs: And no offense. You two won't make the greatest role models.

The toddler made a purring sound as the twins got on Barf and Belch.

Tuffnut: Hear that? I do believe, the child thinks otherwise. Plus, she approached us, so...

Meryl: I don't think your family will okay with you bringing a Scalewalker child home, what if her-

Onyx sniffs the air and frowns.

Onyx: ( sadly: ) Meryl... Dead scents...

Meryl's eyes widened after she sniffed the air, causing the other riders and Heather to be confused.

Heather: What are " Dead scents "?

Onyx: When a Scalewalker pass, what's left of their scents will quickly turned into the scent of death, meaning....

Meryl: ( gestures to the toddler ) She too has lost her family...

Heather: Poor thing...

Tuffnut: Well, no longer. Come on, Ruff. Let's take her to mom and dad.

( Slight Time Skip )

Meryl was making a bed for Heather in a spare room that was across from her room. Evergreen nuzzled Heather's leg with a purr.

Heather: Uh, hello?

Meryl: That's Evergreen. Don't worry, she's very sweet.

Heather and Meryl then noticed that Goofball was trying to eat a rock that could barely fit in his mouth behind them.

Heather: I see why he's called " Goofball ". He's does know that it doesn't fit, right?

Meryl: I....have no clue. Anyway, your bed is done. It's not much, ( jokes: ) but it's better than a nest.

Heather: ( chuckles ) Thanks again. It was nice of you to let me stay here.

Meryl: It was no problem. Plus, the more the merrier. Do you need anything?

Heather: No. But thank you, Meryl. I'm really tired. It's been a long day.

Meryl: Alright. Come on, Evergreen, it's bed time.

Evergreen whines before she walked out of the room. Meryl was about to leave, when...

Heather: Hey, Meryl?

Meryl: Yeah?

Heather: Did you mean what you said earlier? About knowing how it feels to lose a family?

Meryl: Yeah... Sleep well, Heather.

( Later that night )

Meryl and Onyx were now dragons, and were at the beach where they found Heather and the toddler. They found not only a small boat with a seafoam colored blanket, but a small baby dragon that was the size of a Terrible Terror with purple scales, dark indigo underbelly, glowing makings, stormy gray eyes with black sclera, a forked blue tongue, and had dark freckles on her wings.

Onyx: She's a SeaDiver, but she has...

Meryl: The eyes, wing pattern, and tongue of a IceFang. She must be a hybrid... Like me.

The baby hybrid Scalewalker dragon jumped on the small boat and hugged the blanket began she looked at the ocean and made a loud chirping sound, trying to call out for her parents. Meryl and Onyx's hearts sank when they saw this, and Meryl walked over to the dragonet.

Meryl: ( to the toddler: ) It's okay... Let's get you somewhere safe, okay, sweetie?

Meryl then picked the little one and held her in her front talons and sat on her back legs. The Scalewalker dragonet was still holding the blanket and made a small chirp sound, before Onyx and Meryl started flying to the cove, with her in Meryl's talons. When they got to the cove and once Meryl placed the toddler down, the dragonet quickly began playing in the water with the blanket in her tiny talons.

Onyx: ( sighs ) ( sadly: ) Will there ever be a day where a child doesn't become a orphan because of hate...?

Meryl: We can only hope, Onyx...
