Chapter 29
11:05, 26 December 2025"You don't look that different, Shane."
"Neither do you." And somehow that's comforting..
She sat down smiling before staring at him squarely, "Did you know?"
His hand massaged between his eyes as he let out a breath. He stood up going to a chair in front of her. His palms came together before looking at her.
"I did."
"Jerk!" She said accusing, her teeth gritted. "When I specifically told him not to do that! Both of you are jerks."
Sir Nighteye rolled his eyes, "Well, you weren't the most trustworthy person, were you now?"
That stung but she fueled her anger instead, "Shut up! You know nothing. I couldn't.. I didn't.." Her eyes shut in frustration. A hand landed on hers making her eyes snap open to meet his apologetic gaze.
"I'm sorry."
She stared at him before her eyes softened as she nodded. He removed his hand and she took a deep breath, "What about Tenko?"
The man lowered his head. "The kid disappeared that day. I think you know better details about what happened but from what All might mentioned at the time, All for one had kidnapped him."
Her eyebrows scrunched, eyes closing tightly.
"He hadn't been spotted until now." Nighteye continued, "After you lost control over your quirk and then went into a coma, All might launched search parties in coordination with the police but nobody found him."
Her arms went around each other as she tried to hold herself together. She took a deep breath before opening her eyes and looking straight at him. "What did you see Nighteye?" Her lips trembled, "what did you see in my future?"
His lips thinned as he stayed silent. He seemed to be debating whether to tell her or not.
"I deserve to know, Nighteye." Her voice was steady. There is no room for negotiation, I need to know. "What did you see?"
He sighed, "You glitched Shane. What I foresaw is what happened. Your quirk went out of control and you glitched."
She gulped, "..and then?"
His face fell a bit, "then the coma."
"Then?"
He pushed his glasses back, "that's the most I saw at the time. I didn't look again."
She stayed quiet for a second before smiling at him. "Don't lie to me, Nighteye." The hero froze a bit at the pain inside her smile.
Keira didn't miss it. He had touched her hand. He had looked her in the eyes. The conditions were complete.
"Does it matter?" He shot back.
"Yes it does!" Her voice cracked. She stood up trying to clear her head before pacing back and forth, "This isn't the time for mind games Nighteye. I'm going home and.." she leaned towards him with each word next, "..I need to know what will happen"
"It didn't help the last time." He didn't want to tell her. Her breath felt shorter, her chest tight.
She covered her eyes letting out a breath. "Please Nighteye.. everybody keeps saying. Everybody keeps s-saying that.." all she could muster was a whisper, "th-they keep saying th-that it's been.. it's been eighteen years."
She felt her cheeks get wet. Her heart trembled as she leaned down her elbows on her knees. The truth was heavy. She felt it on her shoulders. The truth she's been denying, "but.. but for me.." Tenko. All might.
"..for me.." her voice sounded so small. Exactly how she felt.
"For me it's only been a month!" And just like that it was as if the lid was opened, "it's been a month Nighteye! A month for me!" She cried out, "A month and everything changed?! Tenko is a villain now! All might is older and wounded! And I'm a goddamn 40 something year old woman!"
Sobs wracked her body. "I was 25! I was home, I was happy. I don't want to save anybody anymore! I don't want to help anybody! I wanna go home! Do you understand?! I.. want.. I want to go home!" Her voice broke into sobs. She barely registered the hands pulling her up. A voice was talking but she couldn't make out the words.
She felt his hand on her shoulder patting her once twice before staying there. She didn't know how may minutes passed before she was able to put her hands away from her face. The hand on her shoulder disappeared before tissues were held in front of her face. She shakily gripped them breathing heavily and trying to calm the sniffing and crying down. She wiped her tears and nose before looking up at him.
Sir Nighteye sighed. She had been troublesome since day one, but the sight of her so broken did twist his insides uncomfortably. And All might wouldn't have wanted it.
Nighteye took off his glasses rubbing his eyes. He couldn't deny her visit had also reminded him of nice times where he had worked with All might and his hero was in full power.
Keira saw him step away going somewhere before coming back with two bottles of water. He handed her one before sitting in front of her. She opened the bottle, the water feeling cool down her throat. Exhaustion washed over her and all she wanted to do was curl up and sleep hoping when she wakes up it will be different.
"Blonde." She glanced at him before her eyes widened in wonder. His eyes are purple. "I see a blonde girl wearing UA's uniform."
Keira leaned forward interested before shaking her head, "do I make it home?" Her voice was hoarse a bit. "Do you see me opening a portal?"
His eyebrow raised questions on his face but he didn't voice them, "yes but it's not clear. The further I look the less accurate it is. It seems a bit distant, the vision of you opening a portal which is stable." Hope welled up inside her chest, "the nearest thing I can see is UA sports festival-"
"Don't tell me everything. I don't want to feel stuck. Just the important pieces and the portal." She took a breath, "did you see how I opened it?"
He was silent for a moment before his eyes returned to yellow, "No. It's a bit far in the future." Her shoulders dropped a bit before she shook her head. I just need to come back a bit later and ask him to look again.
They were both silent. Her eyes were glued to the bottle in her hands before the words fell softly from her lips, "..thank you."
Another beat of silence. She looked up, "I mean it." His expression was a bit unreadable but then it softened a bit as he nodded. He opened the cap of his bottle drinking a bit.
"Does All might know you're here?"
She grimaced, "uh yeah totally."
His eyes narrowed making her look to the side. She sighed with a deadpan expression, "of course not."
"But he knows you're awake right?"
"Yes he does."
"And you met him?"
She pursed her lips. "..I guess."
"You guess?" He took out his phone from his pocket, "well then, let's call and see if he can join our conversatio-"
"Fine fine! He doesn't know. Of course I didn't meet him."
"What do you mean of course you didn't meet him? He's been waiting for you to wake up for the past-" he cut himself off before rephrasing the words, "-for a while."
Her hand gripped her other arm as she fidgeted. "I'll.. I'll meet him soon. I just can't, right now."
He huffed before nodding. The silence was comfortable. Her chest felt a bit lighter and her cheeks dusted red slightly as she realized her outburst.
She cleared her throat, "Ehem.. well I think that's enough for my little visit. I should get going." She hesitated rubbing her arm a bit. They both stood up.
"Where are you staying?" He asked.
"Nearby!" She chirped smiling slightly, "Don't worry I'm not sleeping on a park bench." She turned towards the door.
"That doesn't sound comforting, try again." He narrowed his eyes making her huff.
"Don't worry, I got an apartment and everything. Happy?" She was at the door now turning a bit towards him with the last word.
"I would expect that much from one of my students." Her steps halted at his words, her eyes widening a fraction. After a moment, she looked back with the first genuine smile for a while now.
"Drop by if you need something." He was sitting at his desk now, his hands intertwined under his chin, "and don't make All might wait long."
A fanboy through and through, she held back a laugh. "Yes sir." She saluted, her back to him before she went to the door. She was almost out the door before he called her again.
"It wasn't your fault. Neither I nor all might think that."
Her hands trembled as she stood there for a moment. She nodded before stepping out of his office a little lighter than when she entered.
***Shigaraki's fingers dug into his neck scratching, red eyes landing on the hand on the desk. Somehow, the hand didn't fit anymore on his face. It didn't fit, all because of her.
Her blonde hair and blue eyes appeared in his mind. His twisted mind that felt even more twisted when she told him who she was. Showed him who she was.
The image twisted in his head as blonde hair turned to black and blue eyes to grey. The same grey eyes that hugged him and protected him.
If that is the truth.
He would find out. He sat down one leg bent up on the chair before the neck scratching calmed down a bit. In the computer in front of him was a news webpage with the title of his soon to be scouting opportunity:
UA Sports Festival to be held end of this month!
Yes, he grinned, he would find out the truth. And bring some new candidates for his league of villains.
