Chapter 2

17:10, 15 August 2021

"Shit," Savitar mumbled.

"Savitar..." he heard Caitlin from behind him, "what did you do?" She gasped.

Savitar ran out, unable to hid his guiltiness. Barry, awoken from the trance, ran over to his identical-looking friend. Barry took in Savitar's worried expression and put a hand on his shoulder.

"What happened?"

"I didn't know-I," Savitar sighed, "I reverse-flashed him. Barry, I didn't mean-"

"I know."

Barry understood his pain, more than anyone else. The only thing he wondered was what Savitar saw, to make him do such a viscous act.

After talking it over with Joe and the other officials, Barry and Savitar ran back to Star Labs where everyone was silent.

As soon as the two speedsters walked into the cortex, Caitlin walked out after giving Savitar a pained glance.

"Go talk to her," Barry suggested.

Savitar looked back at the entrance of the cortex and shook his head, "I don't-I think we all just need some time." Savitar sped out of the lab and ran to the nearby dam to think.

Back at the lab, Iris asked what everyone was thinking, "Barry, what happened? Caitlin came in frustrated and she wouldn't say anything."

"Didn't you guys see what had happened through the CCTV cameras?"

"Honestly, only bits and pieces," Iris replied.

"We heard you guys loud and clear, but we couldn't even see the guy," Cisco continued.

"The Hybrid," Harry added.

"Not calling him that."

Barry thought back to the horrible visions he had of his mother dying, but instead of the Reverse Flash killing her, it was him. He shook his head to get rid of the memory. He explained what had happened and how The Hybrid had died.

"Interesting," Harry rolled around on the revolving chair and began to type.

"How is killing someone interesting? You do realize this guy's dead, right?" Cisco asked.

"Is he really?"

Iris and Barry glanced at each other.

Cisco spoke into the lab microphones, "Caitlin, I think you should come to the cortex."

Within a few moments, Caitlin walked in, red eyed.

"You okay?" Barry asked.

Caitlin only nodded softly in reply, "what happened?"

"Allen says that there was man at CCPD who gave them nightmares," Harry started.

"Way to put it lightly," Barry mumbled.

"Where's Savitar?" Caitlin asked.

"He ran out," Cisco informed her.

"The CCTV cameras couldn't catch the man or the visions," Harry continued, "Allen, do you mind?"

Harry pointed to the computers to which Barry scanned through the police department's criminal file.

"This is him," Barry pulled up a picture so everyone could see, "he had a mask, but it only really covered his eyes and that chain, he had the same one."

"Victor Hinburk," Iris stated, "sentenced four years for assault of high school teacher."

"If we run facial recognition," Harry typed, "we see that ..."

"He's still in Iron Heights!" Caitlin finished.

"How is that possible?" Iris asked.

"We saw him, he physically fought us. It wasn't like a hologram," Barry added.

"Well, I checked our vitals from the fight and I noticed how the hippocampus was highly active. It's responsible for long-term memory, so maybe that's how he was creating those visions? Controlling that part of our temporal lobe," Caitlin added.

"That would explain why he knew so much about us, but I heard him when he was talking with Savitar. He said the visions, they weren't nightmares, but possible futures," Barry said, "but that wouldn't make sense since the 'nightmare' I had was from something in the past."

Iris patted his shoulder in comfort, "he could easily be lying, we don't know."

Cisco shrugged, "and this isn't the first time we've fought someone who wasn't even there."

"For once, Roman's right. You should head over to Iron Heights and pay him a visit," Harry said.

"I gotta head over to work, keep me updated," Iris kissed Barry goodbye and walked out.

"Okay, I'll call Joe and head over to Iron Heights."

"We'll be here if you need us," Cisco assured.

"I'll be back," Caitlin walked out of Star Labs and wondered where Savitar could be. She wasn't certain but they recently spent a lot of time at the dam where Barry trained a few years ago to fight Trajectory.

She knew how much her significant other enjoyed the sound of the falling water. Unfortunately, though a speedster could get there in a few seconds, Caitlin Snow had to get in her car and drive thirty minutes to arrive at her destination.

She found Savitar sitting, knees-to-chest, starring off into the distance. He didn't even realize she was there until Caitlin sat down next to him and put a hand on his shoulder.

"Caitlin?"

"Hi," she smiled.

"What are you doing here?"

"I just wanted to see if you're okay."

He looked at her, then turned his face to look straight ahead. He sighed, "after H.R, I promised myself I wouldn't-you know, kill. I'm sorry if you feel disappointed, I-"

"I'm not."

"You're not?"

She smiled, "your anger still needs to be worked on, don't get me wrong, but since The Hybrid didn't technically die, I guess it's fine."

"Wait, he didn't die?"

Caitlin laughed, "no, it was an illusion of some sort. He's in Iron Heights. Barry and Joe are going to see him as we speak."

"That's-"

"A relief?"

"Yeah, actually," Savitar took a deep breath, happy to know he didn't kill someone, even if they might've deserved it.

"So, what did you see? What made you so mad that you felt you had to kill Victor?"

Savitar sighed, "it sounds dumb, but we were at a dinner of some sort at Joe's and everyone seemed so ... disgusted by me. You were in front of all of them, yelling and crying at me. It felt so real."

Caitlin put her head on Savitar's shoulder and intertwined her hand in his, "I'm sorry you had to go through that, but you're apart of the team now and I promise you that no matter what happens, we won't abandon you."

Savitar kissed her forehead, "and what did you see?"

"Nothing bad."

"Cait, stop lying. I saw how frightened you were."

She paused, "I saw my dad. But it wasn't from before he died, he looked older and he his hair was white, so were his eyes."

"Like Frost?"

"Yeah," she let out a weary breath.

"And what do you think of it?"

"My dad can't be alive but we've already established that Frost wasn't just a cause of Flashpoint, she's apart of my DNA, so maybe my father knew something about it?"

"You don't sound too happy about that."

"If he did know, then my mom would've known too and I just - I won't be able to forgive her if she did and I don't want to do that, not after everything we've been through."

"We'll get through it, together. That's my promise," he kissed her for comfort.

They got interrupted with a text from Cisco to come to Star Labs.

Savitar carried Caitlin, bridal style, and said, "we'll come back for your car later."

They arrived at Star Labs and Savitar asked, "what happened?"

"It's Victor," Barry started, "he escaped."
