Part 71

15:34, 9 April 2026

Noel barely had time to adjust the strap of his guitar before the rest of the "breakout" unfolded. Following in Bowie's wake, Donovan and Sonny came charging onto the stage as well, their young faces lit with the pure adrenaline of escaping the suffocating tension of their mother's sharp, watchful gaze.

Noel took a step forward, his heart pounding with a messy mixture of guilt and fatherly pride. He opened his arms wide, ready to catch them both at once. But history repeated itself with brutal precision right in front of the entire stage crew.

Just like their little sister, the boys sprinted right past him. They ignored the vintage Gibsons and the towering Marshall stacks they were usually so fascinated by, heading straight for the side of the stage.

'Caro!' they shouted in unison.

Noel stood frozen, his arms slowly dropping to his sides. He watched as Donovan and Sonny joined the huddle, throwing their arms around Caroline and their sister. Caroline, still holding Bowie, dropped to her knees to gather all three of them into a single, fierce embrace. She laughed, a genuine, warm sound Noel hadn't heard from her in ages, and ruffled Sonny's hair with a tenderness that made Noel's chest ache.

It was only after they had finished their enthusiastic greeting, after a quick huddle and a few whispered words from her pointing in Noel's direction, that the boys finally turned toward their father. Only then did they run to him, waving excitedly, but the sequence of events was a physical blow to Noel's solar plexus.

He dropped to his knees to catch them, the sting behind his sunglasses becoming almost unbearable. As he pulled his sons and his daughter into his chest, he looked over their shoulders at Caroline. She was standing up now, retrieving her clipboard, her professional mask sliding back into place, but the lingering love for his children was still etched in her features.

Noel realized with a jolt of clarity that while he and Sara had been too busy with their own scorched-earth war, Caroline had been the one truly seeing the kids. He had dismissed her as a "mistake" to save his skin, but to his children, she was the only constant in the chaos.

From the wings, the silence from Sara was deafening. she stood there, her designer handbag clutched so tight the seams looked ready to snap, watching her entire family literally and figuratively align themselves with the woman she was trying to erase.

The tension on the stage snapped like an overtightened guitar string. Sara suddenly lunged forward from the wings, her face a mask of cold, jagged fury. She grabbed Donovan and Sonny by their upper arms, her grip so forceful it made the boys flinch.

'Back to the trailer! NOW!' she hissed, effectively dragging the boys toward the wings. They didn't even protest; the sheer weight of their mother's public meltdown was enough to make them go quiet and rigid as they were hauled away.

But Bowie was faster. As Sara reached for her, the little girl ducked away, letting out a heartbreaking sob that echoed through the stage monitors. Instead of following her brothers, she turned and sprinted back to the only person she trusted. She threw herself against Caroline's legs again, burying her tear-stained face in the black fabric of her trousers.

Caroline couldn't watch it anymore. The professional distance she had fought so hard to maintain all morning dissolved the second she heard Bowie's hitching breaths. She looked at Noel, who stood there paralyzed with his guitar, caught between the cage Sara had built and the wreckage of his family. The look in Caroline's eyes wasn't professional anymore, it was a raw, protective anger shot at the man who was letting this happen.

'It's okay, Bowie. I've got you,' Caroline whispered hoarsely, hoisting the girl into her arms. She didn't even grant Sara a glance as she turned to the head stage tech. 'Soundcheck is on a five-minute hold. Clear the deck.'

'Bring her back here this instant, you stupid bitch!' Sara shrieked from the side of the stage, still clutching the two boys.

Caroline ignored her completely. She walked off the stage with Bowie on her hip, moving away from the cameras and the prying eyes of the crew into the relative quiet of the backstage corridors. Bowie's small hands were clamped around Caroline's neck, her entire body shaking with sobs.

Caroline found a quiet spot behind a stack of flight cases and sat down, pulling the girl onto her lap and rocking her gently.

'I miss Daddy...and I miss you, Caro,' Bowie wailed, her voice broken and small. 'I don't want to go back to the big house. Why is Daddy back with her? Why can't you come over anymore? I don't want to go to Daddy if he's staying with her!'

Caroline felt a stray tear of her own escape down her cheek as she stroked the girl's hair. 'Shh, sweetheart. It's okay. Daddy has to work right now, okay? I'm going to stay right here with you. I'll take you to him the second he's off that stage and he's by himself. I promise.'

Back on the stage, Noel remained frozen, his hands limp against the strings of his Gibson as he heard the distant, fading echo of Bowie's cries somewhere in the mazes sidestage. Every sob was a jagged reminder that in choosing the "perfect" image, he was systematically destroying the trust of the one person who loved him without a contract.

Liam stepped up to his brother, his voice unusually low but lethally sharp. 'Congratulations, Noel. You got your "perfect family" back. Sounds fookin' lovely, doesn't it?'

Noel didn't answer. He couldn't. He watched Sara, she was still there, trembling with a mix of fury and public embarrassment, her grip still firm on the boys who looked like they wanted to vanish into the stage floor.

'Leave them be, Sara,' Noel finally rasped, his voice sounding thin.

'Leave them?' Sara hissed, stepping closer now that Caroline was out of sight. 'She just kidnapped your daughter in front of your entire crew! And you just stood there! You're going to go back there right now, you're going to take Bowie, and you're going to tell that..that bitch that if she touches one of my children again, I'll have her in handcuffs.'

Noel looked at his brother. Liam was leaning against his mic stand, eyes wide and mocking, waiting for Noel to fold. He simply turned his back on his wife and looked at the stage manager.

'Five minutes,' Noel repeated, his voice gaining a hard, dangerous edge. 'Everyone off the deck. Now.'

As the crew scrambled to obey, Noel unstrapped his guitar and handed it to his tech without a word. He didn't look at Sara as he walked past her, ignoring her sharp intake of breath and the way she called his name. He followed the path Caroline had taken, guided by the faint, hitching sobs still drifting from behind the equipment stacks.

He found them in the dim light behind a row of Marshall flight cases. Caroline was sitting on a low crate, rocking and comforting a shaking Bowie. The sight stopped him in his tracks. Caroline's head was bowed, resting against the top of the little girl's head, her jacket stained with Bowie's tears.

'Caro,' Noel whispered.

Bowie's head snapped up. Her eyes were red and swollen, and the second she saw him, she scrambled closer into Caroline's lap, her tiny hand clutching Caroline's thumb as if for protection.

'Go away!' Bowie sobbed, the words hitting Noel harder than any punch anyone had ever thrown. 'You're being mean to me! You're being mean to Caro and you're staying with Sara! I want to stay with Caro!'

Noel's heart plummeted in his chest, the distance between them feeling like an ocean. 'I'm sorry, Bowie,' Noel breathed, his voice breaking. 'I... I'm so sorry.' But his daughter had no ears for his apologies and pushed his hand away that was reaching for her.

'Bowie, your Dad needs to talk to you and you need to give him a chance, ok? So be a good girl like you always are and just listen to him? I'll see you in a bit, ok?' Caroline said, her voice a low warning as she kept her eyes on the child.

Caroline's voice was gentle, but the authority behind it was absolute. Even in her heartbreak, Bowie listened to her. The little girl slowly let go of Caroline's thumb, though her red-rimmed eyes remained fixed on her father with a heavy, unchildlike suspicion.

Caroline stood up, straightening her jacket, and pointedly avoided Noel's gaze. She stepped past him without a word, the air around her vibrating with a suppressed, protective fury.

Noel sat down next to her, his shadow stretching long and jagged against the Marshall stacks.

'Bowie,' Noel began, his voice barely a sandpaper rasp. He reached out a hand, but the girl flinched, pulling her knees tighter to her chest as if she were trying to disappear into the crate she sat on.

'Don't touch me, Daddy' she choked out. Her red-rimmed eyes finally snapped to his, but there was no warmth in them, only a cold, sharp betrayal that looked terrifyingly adult for such a young child. 'I know you don't want me here.'

Noel felt the air leave his lungs. 'What? B., that's not true. I love having you here. I love you more than anything.'

'You're lying,' she shot back, her voice rising with a sob. 'I heard Mummy on the phone. I heard what she said Sara told her.'

Noel froze, a cold dread pooling in his stomach at the mention of Mel. 'What did she say, Bowie?'

'She said Sara told her I was getting in the way'. Bowie cried, the words tumbling out in a painful rush. 'That you and Sara don't like me being around and that you don't have a place for me at your house anymore. She said you want me to stay with Mummy forever because I'm just a bother to your new life!'

The floor seemed to tilt beneath Noel. He could see it clearly now, Sara's voice in Mel's ear, twisting his words, using his daughter as a weapon in a war Bowie shouldn't even know existed.

'Bowie, look at me,' Noel pleaded, his voice breaking as he ignored the sting of his own tears. 'I never said that. I would never, ever say that. Your mum..she misunderstood. But I need you to know that I want you with me every single day.'

'No you don't!' Bowie shrieked, standing up on the crate so she could look down at him, her tiny frame shaking with fury. 'You're mean to Caro because she likes me! You stay with Sara even when she's mean to me or Caro! Mummy said you're done with me as well as with Caroline, and I believe her! I want to go home!'

Bowie didn't wait for his explanation. She scrambled off the crate, her small sneakers slapping against the concrete as she bolted toward the exit Caroline had disappeared through.

'Bowie! Wait!' Noel scrambled to his feet, his joints aching as he ran after her.

Caroline was leaning against a pillar, talking to a sound tech, but she straightened instantly when she heard the frantic patter of Bowie's feet.

'Caro! Caro, please!' Bowie wailed, throwing herself at Caroline's legs with such force she nearly knocked her over. She buried her face in the fabric of Caroline's trousers, her small hands clutching the fabric as if it were a life raft. 'Don't let me stay with Daddy, call my Mummy please, I want to go home, don't let him take me back to Sara!'

Noel skidded to a halt a few feet away, chest heaving. 'Bowie, darling, please just..'

'No!' the girl shrieked without looking back. 'Go away! I hate you!'

The words felt like a physical blow to Noel's chest. He looked up at Caroline, his eyes pleading for help, for an intervention, for the bridge she usually built between them. But the warmth he usually found in Caroline's gaze was gone. It had been replaced by a cold, hard wall of protective fury.

'She's had enough, Noel,' Caroline said, her voice low and dangerously steady. She wrapped her arms around Bowie, shielding the shaking girl from his sight.

'Caro, you don't understand what she just told me,' Noel started, his voice cracking. 'Sara called Mel and..'

'I don't care,' Caroline interrupted, her eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp light. 'I don't care about the phone calls, or the excuses, or whose fault it is this time.' Caroline commanded. The authority in her voice was absolute, leaving no room for the rockstar ego or the father's desperation.

'Run back to your Sara, to your darling master and commander, let her solve your problems, and while you're at it, go see to your other children who aren't currently terrified of you YET! But leave us alone. I'll take her over to Lennon and Gene'

She didn't wait for his permission. She scooped Bowie up into her arms and walked toward Liam's trailer, leaving Noel standing alone under the harsh fluorescent lights of the loading bay.

Debbie was leaning against the kitchenette counter, a drink in her hand, laughing at something Liam had just muttered about the soundcheck, but the temperature dipped below zero the second the door hissed open.

Caroline stepped in, her face a mask of pale, frigid fury, with a sobbing Bowie in her arms, her face buried so deeply in Caroline's neck that they couldn't even see her face.

Liam put his drink down, a grin still tugging at his lips, but it vanished the instant he saw the state of his niece. 'Oi, what's this? What's happened?'

Debbie set her glass down too, her smile dying instantly. 'Caro? What's wrong?'

Lennon and Gene scrambled up from the floor, their laughter replaced by wide-eyed shock. They were only a few years older than Bowie, and seeing their favorite cousin, usually the fiercest and funniest of the lot, reduced to this made them hover close, their small faces pale with concern.

'She's upset with her Dad' Caroline said, her voice vibrating with a dangerous, low-frequency anger.

Bowie's head snapped up, her eyes swollen and red-rimmed. When she saw Liam, she reached out her small, shaking arms. Liam didn't hesitate; he stood up and gathered the little girl into his own arms, tucking her head under his chin.

'I hate him, Uncle Liam!' Bowie shrieked, the words torn from her throat. 'I hate my Daddy! I never want to see him again!'

Liam stiffened, his large hand cupping the back of her head with surprising tenderness. 'Now, now, B. That's a heavy word. What's he gone and done?'

'He let Sara tell Mummy I'm a bother!' Bowie wailed, her fingers clutching at Liam's parka. 'She told Mummy that Daddy doesn't have a place for me at his house anymore! That he's done with me and Caro!'

Lennon stepped forward, his lip trembling in sympathy, and took Bowie's dangling foot in his hand. 'But you're our best friend. You're always wanted here.'

'Yeah,' Gene added, looking up at his dad with a fierce scowl. 'If he doesn't want you, you can just live with us. We'll look after you.'

Liam looked over the girl's head at Caroline, his eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light. 'Is that right? He's letting that woman poison the kid's head to Mel? On the phone?'

'He's paralyzed, that's what it seems like, Liam,' Caroline snapped. 'I don't know..this can't be him..he would never allow for his daughter's heart to be collateral damage. Your brother would never allow anyone to come between him and his kids..except for one person..but then again..I really don't know him anymore after all he's done to me...'

Liam nodded slowly, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. He pressed a rough, loving kiss to Bowie's damp temple. 'You listen to me, B..you're a Gallagher. You're the queen of the whole lot of us, yeah? Don't let that skinny witch or your daft Dad tell you any different.'

Bowie seemed to instantly become calmer under her uncle's touch and put her arms tightly around his neck 'I love you, Uncle Liam..can I stay with Lennon and Gene?'.

'Sure you can, sweetheart,' Liam softly said as he put her down, 'you go play with them while I'll go have a word with your Dad, ok?'
