Chapter 12
04:27, 7 May 2017Summer POV
"Summer."
I mentally cursed. Must Kylo get me up so early every day? I feel as if I haven't slept at all.
My name was called again and I sat forward, rubbing my eyes and head to wake myself up faster. I yawned and opened my eyes, glancing around the room for Kylo. Where was he?
A faint snore to my right caught my attention. There, asleep in his sleeping bag as I was moments before, was Kylo Ren. I furrowed my brows in confusion. If he didn't call for me...then who did?
Maybe he talked in his sleep. I might have heard him speaking unconsciously from a dream he was having. So then he was dreaming about me. Cute!
I laid back down in my own sleeping bag, attempting to get comfortable again. If he wasn't awake, then I surely am going to take the advantage of sleeping longer.
"Summer."
I craned my head back towards him, sighing. As adorable as it was, his chatter will keep me awake.
"Summer."
I swallowed hard as I watched his body not stir the slightest. That didn't come from Kylo. I climbed out of my sleeping bag and walked over to the doorway, peering down the dark corridors to make sure we were alone. The only light was from cracks or holes of the Temple that splices of the moon's rays could slip through.
I was but relieved to be assured we were indeed alone, yet the voice disturbed me. This better not be another vision. I do not want to witness another haunting memory of this place...
"Summer...come to me."
My head snapped towards the direction of the sound. It seemed to be coming from outside, as if someone was standing right on the other side of the wall.
I hesitated. What if this was a trap? I don't know what relationship Devaron has with the First Order. Maybe they know the commander in chief is hiding out here and want to collect a bounty on him, dead or alive.
My name was called again. It did have the familiar echo, such as when I was in the interrogation chamber on the Finalizer. Was another ghost of the Force trying to reach out to me again? Why do I have to go outside to see him appear?
Obviously it's what he wants, I thought as my name rung through the dim corridors. The voice wasn't shouting, in fact it sounded as if he was whispering. Yet the sound was carried melodically, as if in song. Kylo remained alseep, as if nothing was happening. Perhaps only I can hear it.
I pondered if I should leave or stay. I glanced back at Kylo. If he wakes up and comes after me, the ghost won't appear to me. After a few moments of debate, I left the room. I followed the corridor until I came across the large missing wall then stepped out into the courtyard.
I then paused, scanning the area. Everything looked like one big, lumpy shadow in every direction.
I stood there for a few minutes, waiting for another sign from the Force Ghost or whoever was contacting me. The longer I remained outside the protection of the Temple and Kylo's presence, the more I regretted ever leaving the room. I'm just a target out in the open.
I didn't just want to call out into the darkness because, well, I'm not entirely sure who was calling me. And if the person or thing wasn't a Force ghost, I didn't want a reply...
I was about to turn back when a blue light suddenly appeared before me. Finally. I covered my eyes, the brightness blinding in the darkness.
The light took shape into a human, then dimmed so I could rest my eyes onto him.
Anakin greeted me with a smile. "Told you we would meet again."
"That was sooner than I expected," I said. "What are you doing here?"
"The question is: What are you doing here?"
I figured that inquiry was coming. "To be honest...I don't know."
"Oh, but I think you do." He gestured for me to approach him. I was hesitant but tried not to look fearful as I walked towards him. I'm not afraid that he will hurt me, it's just...he's dead.
"Take a walk with me," Anakin said. "I have something I want to show you."
I couldn't fake my surprise. "A wal- Right now? But it's..." My voice trailed off as I stared off into the unknown.
I didn't have to finish. Anakin knew. "Don't be afraid. I am right here. This is sacred Jedi ground. A Temple to train Jedi. The Force flows strongly through here. The good side of the Force." He smiled again. "Join me."
I looked back at the shuttle. "I can't just leave Kylo like that. He will freak out if he sees I'm missing."
"Ben will never know. I am using the Force to keep him in a deep enough sleep until you return."
I was still reluctant. "Well..."
"Do you trust me?"
I exhaled, nodding. "Yes."
He smiled, taking my hand. Once again I felt warmth, yet no figure. I knew this wasn't a romantic gesture but I couldn't help blushing slightly.
Anakin waved his free arm dramatically into the darkness, as if drawing an invisible sphere in midair. A wind blew and a light emerged from the forest, like a train coming at us on a track. Suddenly night became day and the world began to change around me.
"What's happening?" I yelled into the wind, trying not to freak out but failing. "Anakin!"
"Just close your eyes and relax," the ghost said. He seemed to be speaking normally yet I had no problem hearing him. "Connect with the Force."
I obeyed, shutting my eyes and taking deep breaths to help me calm down. I tried to ignore the storm around me as best as I could, yet it kept distracting me.
"Clear your mind...feel the Force."
I didn't give up, determined to become one with the Force. I could feel it was there...I just had to get to that point.
"You're doing fine," Anakin complimented, easing my frustration. "Take your time."
The fact he wasn't pressuring me made me instantly relax. Kylo would be impatient, but Anakin spoke as if he had frozen time and won't start it back up until I succeeded.
"I think I have it..." I muttered, mystified.
"Impressive. Most impressive." I heard him laugh. "I'm proud of you."
The wind seemed to die around me until it was a gentle breeze. The light dimmed until it wasn't blinding. I felt peaceful and truly one with the Force, even more than when Kylo showed me how. This is amazing.
Anakin released my hand. "We're here. Open your eyes."
I peaked at first, then fully lifted up my eyelids, shocked at the sight. I was standing inside a building with architecture like I've never seen. The ceiling was high, held up by beautifully carved stone pillars. Windows lined up the hallway Anakin and I were now in, overlooking a field and forest.
I finally found my tongue. "Where...where are we?"
He answered with a smile. "You should know." He walked up to one of the windows and I followed him, staying right by his side. "Want to guess?"
I shrugged, speechless. "Did you transport me somewhere? I didn't know a Force Ghost could do that."
"We can't. Which is why we never left. We are exactly where we were standing."
"Impossible. It was in the middle of the night. We were in the courtyard."
"And now it is day. We are in the Jedi Temple."
I took a step back. My legs nearly going out from under me, I leaned against a nearby windowsill for support. "Wait-what?! How is this possible?! The Temple was destroyed ages ago and is just a pile of ruins!"
"Unless..." His tone wanted me to finish the sentence.
"Unless...you teleported us through time?"
He laughed, though not in a mocking way, amused by my answer. "Close. This is a vision of the past." Great. Another Force-Vision. "I brought you here to show you someone who I think you might recognize." He motioned towards the window. "Take a look."
I stared out at a beautiful grassy field and line of trees, marking the start of the forest. A stone fence separated the Temple from the unknown, probably for protection from outsiders or unfriendly animals.
"I don't see anyone," I said to Anakin, still searching the view.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, there's no one around."
"Check again."
I turned to him, now confused. "Um, what exactly am I supposed to be seeing?"
His brown eyes shifted to me. "Remember, this is a vision of the Force. The stronger your connection, the more you will see. Otherwise, this will all fade away."
I took a few more deep breaths, trying to stay relaxed and keep a hold of the Force. When I looked back outside, I blinked to make sure my vision wasn't playing tricks on me.
The field was full of Jedi. Young Jedi, Initiate to Padawan level and age, practicing their stances with lightsabers. Leading the group, was a man who was all to familiar in my eyes.
"Is that..." I muttered.
Anakin nodded proudly. "Yes. My son, Luke. The group of Force-Sensitives you see before you would have become the start of the next Jedi Order. That is, if Ben didn't revolt against his uncle."
I stared sadly at the wannabe Jedi. They wanted to achieve something good...and they were slaughtered for it.
"Why did Kylo-"
"Ben."
"Sorry. Why did Ben kill everyone though? If he had a problem with Luke, why didn't he just deal with him? Why bring the innocents into it?"
Anakin exhaled loudly. "Well, why did I slaughter a room full of younglings?"
I winced. "Do you really want me to answer that..."
He chuckled softly. "No. I did it because I was so lost into the Dark Side, so badly wanting to save Padme...it didn't matter what Palpatine told me to do. I would have thrown myself off a cliff if it would have saved her life. I was that desperate. But Ben is seeing my wrongdoings as a guide to his life as a Dark Knight." He sighed, crossing his arms across his chest. "Snoke has twisted him so badly. It's so sad to watch him him deteriorate into a monster like I did."
I didn't repsond, not knowing how to. I gave Anakin a moment, looking back outside. I studied each and every Jedi on that field. Some were human, others humanoid, and a few strictly aliens. Everyone seems so happy. Luke is smiling at his trainees. The Initiates and Padawans are enjoying his presence and training. Especially one boy, who seems all to eager to impress Luke.
I blinked, my eyes darting back to the boy. I mentally swore. "Anakin-"
"Ah, I see you've found young Ben Solo," he said, stating my thoughts. "Quite a rambunctious and charismatic being he was. Never saw someone smile so much in my life."
I've only been watching him for five minutes and I couldn't agree more. "But seeing his happiness here as a Padawan, what made him turn to the Dark Side?"
"Though it is contradicting to what I said, Ben wasn't always this happy. As he progressed in training, he soon started to fall behind and eventually fail Luke's classes. He was feeling like he didn't belong, which was the worst thing possible for his vulnerable and naive state of mind. Snoke snatched him at the perfect time."
"So he just turned on his own?"
Anakin hesitated before saying, "Leia never told her son about my connection to her. Well, about Darth Vader. She kept it a secret from him, and once he heard the news it crushed him. From his point of view, his parents and even Luke had been lying to him his whole life." He shook his head, reminiscing. "But it was only for protection. Snoke had his eyes on him since even before he was born. He knew Ben would have great power in the Force no matter which side he was on. So when Ben was at his weakest state, with turmoil and conflicted feelings toward his family, Snoke manipulated and convinced him to rebel. That's why he is so badly wanting to be another image of Vader. He supposedly wants it all...the power, the control. But deep down, I think he just wants to be free of the prison he locked himself in."
I nodded, taking his words in. My eyes fell back onto the joyful boy on the field. "Yeah. I agree."
Anakin waved his hand. "Let me show you what I mean."
Everyone disappeared on the field, evaporating like wisps of smoke, expect for Ben and Luke. The day and time was different, for Ben looked a few years older.
Ben was practicing with training droids, but he was getting hit more than blocking with his green lightsaber. Luke was trying to aid him, but Ben was only getting more and more frustrated. Eventually he just gave up, throwing his weapon down and storming off into the forest, leaving his very disturbed uncle behind. My heart ached at the sight.
Anakin held out his hand once the scene was over. "I want to show you another place. Remember your connection to the Force."
I took his hand and kept myself calm as the world disappeared around me. We were rushed forward at a speed my eye could barely catch then abruptly halted in a clearing in the woods. I guessed we were still on Devaron, for the vegetation looked alike. All this took place in a matter of seconds.
I took in my surroundings. "Um, why are we in the middle of the forest?"
His eyes remained focused on the trees around us. "Just wait a moment."
Ben stumbled out of the bushes, his face stained with angry tears. He sat down on a rock in front of us and ran his hands through his hair, seething.
"Can he see us?" I whispered to Anakin, in fear of being overhead.
"No, this is just vision. No one can physically see or hear us."
Ben raised his head, seeming to look right into my eyes. Or more accurately, right through me. I feel like Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. This is just creepy.
Ben suddenly jumped to his feet and the stumbled backwards in surprise. "Who's there?" he called out.
"Anakin, are you sure-"
"He's not referring to us. I assure you," the ghost replied. "Look behind you."
I got back to my feet and watched another figure emerge from the bushes, one I wished would disappear. Snoke, naturally standing at over seven feet tall, towered above young Ben. "I sense a great disturbance in you boy. What troubles you?"
Ben, much to my surprise, kept a distance from Snoke, easily displaying distrust and defense. "Who are you?"
Snoke pushed back his hooded robe. "I am someone who is here to free you from this pathetic life and show you your destiny. Show you what you are truly meant to be doing."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Ben growled. "I'm warning you, stay away from me!"
"Just killing a stranger is not the Jedi way."
"What do you know about Jedi?"
Snoke's tone darkened. "More than needed to be said."
"I've got time." There's that "Solo Sass".
"Let's say I might have run into a few in my lifetime. I've been around for a long time young one. I've seen the Jedi Order rise and fall, The Empire be created then destroyed. And now..."
Ben furrowed his brows. "And now..."
Snoke pressed his hands together, fingertip to palm. "And now a new power is rising to fox the problems of the galaxy, but it is starved for leadership. It needs someone who can lead a great army into battle, fight and even die alongside them. Someone who must be strong in the Force, able to wield the deepest powers of both the Light and the Dark. I am searching for that certain someone."
His skepticism was clear. "And...you think that someone is me?"
"Don't be fooled Ben Solo, the ways of a Jedi are not for everyone. Especially for a descendant of a Sith Lord."
Ben's eyes widened. "What are you talking about? How do you know who I am?"
Snoke only answered his first question. "I'm referring to Darth Vader, one of the greatest Sith Lords who has ever lived. Have you heard of him?"
The young Padawan was pale. "Who hasn't? My mother told war stories of her struggles with him and his Empire."
Snoke all but smirked. "Ah, but did she mention her relevance to him?"
"What are you trying to say?"
The tone of voice Snoke used would haunt me forever. The way it rang and screeched like the Emperor made me feel faint. It's happening all over again. "Princess Leia Organa is the daughter of Darth Vader."
Ben stumbled back onto the rock, the news hitting him harder than a train wreck. He quickly gathered himself. "No...no, it can't be true. She would never lie to me!"
"But she has, young one. And she will continue to for the rest of your life."
Ben kept trying to shake it off. "I don't believe you!" He rose back to his feet, seeming taller than before. "I don't know what you're trying to do, but I'm kindly asking you to leave before I alert my uncle of your presence."
"You mean the idiot Luke Skywalker?" Snoke snickered. "He is Vader's son. Surely at least he has told you that."
Ben reluctantly shook his head, trying to deny the truth. "No. He never said anything word to me. My mother never did either, for that matter."
"So you believe what I am telling you then?"
Ben looked up at Snoke. Lost. Hurt. Confused. Cheeks becoming stained with tears. "Why would they keep such a thing from me?"
"Don't you see? They don't want you to achieve your potential! The Force runs strongly through you, just as it did through your grandfather. Surely you feel you are meant to be more than just a Jedi."
Ben didn't respond, speechless. Snoke continued his manipulation. "That is why you are failing as a Jedi. Because of the Dark Side of the Force that runs through your veins. It is calling you to your destiny."
"If I'm not supposed to be a Jedi then...what is my destiny?"
Snoke looked upon Ben as the Emperor did to Anakin. "You need to follow your calling. Listen to it. You could be the next ruler of the galaxy...just like your grandfather."
This was hitting Ben hard but Snoke wasn't about to give up now. "The power you would receive from the Dark Side is far greater than ever could be imagined. If you joined me...I would pass on my knowledge of the Force to you. Just think of how much strength you would possess, having training in both sides of the Force." An ugly smile curled on his lips. "You are a very gifted boy, Ben Solo. You could become ten times as powerful as Vader was. Use your gift before it is too late. Do not let it go to waste."
Their conversation was interrupted by Luke calling for Ben in the distance. Snoke was trying to keep his composure, knowing it was now or never.
He extended a pale, wrinkled hand. "Well Ben Solo, will you join me?"
Luke's shouting was becoming louder, an indication he was getting closer. Ben hesitated, unsure of how to make the decision that would soon change his life.
Luke ran out of the bushes, nearly jumping back at the who in front of him. He ignited his lightsaber. "Snoke, get away from my nephew!"
"Stand down Skywalker," Snoke growled. "Our conversation is none of your concern!"
"Ben, get behind me! I'll protect you!" The Jedi's blue eyes shifted to his Padawan, who didn't even twitch. "Ben. Come on! I'll cover you!"
"No."
Luke's face was as shocked as Obi-Wan's when he discovered who the culprit of the slaughtering in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant was. "What in the galaxy are you doing Ben? This is not the time for heroics."
"I said, no!" Darkness raged over Ben's formerly tranquil voice.
Luke could only stare. "Ben..."
"Use your anger," Snoke urged. "That is your strength."
"Don't listen to him! He is trying to manipulate you!"
"And what are you doing?" Ben countered. "When were you going to tell me that Vader was my grandfather, huh? Is that why you're holding me back from my potential?"
Luke looked like he was slapped. "Ben, I'm doing nothing of the sort. I brought you here to bring out your power, not conceal it. That's why your mother sent you here to become a Jedi-"
"Another lie!" Snoke interjected. "You're withholding him from his destiny!"
"His 'destiny' is to remain here with me where it's safe from the Dark Side. Though I see that has already come through."
"I came here to help him."
"You want to use his power. I am helping him!"
"No, you're not!" Ben shouted. "I'm failing as a Padawan and I finally know why. I'm meant to rule the galaxy like my grandfather did, not stick around here like a worthless Jedi!"
"The Jedi are not worthless," Luke defended. "They were keepers of the peace for years until the Empire destroyed them."
"Because they turned against the Republic," Snoke added. "What choice did Palpatine have?"
"They never did anything like that!"
"They started the war!"
"No, they tried to help the Republic win the war! If they were against them, why didn't they side with the Separatists?"
"This is just time wasted. Ben." The grim human (if you want to call him human) turned towards the boy. "Consider this your initiation and first test to prove your loyalty to me." He pointed his ugly finger at the Jedi. "Destroy him! Rest at nothing until he's dead!"
Luke stared in horror at his Padawan. "Ben, you wouldn't. I'm your uncle! He's trying to trick you into believing his lies!"
"No, you're the one lying!" Ben shouted, clenching his fists with anger. "He is helping me. You are only hurting me!"
A thrust of his arm and Luke flew back against a tree, smacking it hard enough I heard the bark crack.
"Good, good..." Snoke smiled and evil, ugly smile. "Feel the anger and hate run through you."
Ben looked entranced. "I feel it...Master."
Luke struggled to stand up. "Ben...don't do this. I'm sorry I never told you your heritage. Leia and I were only trying to protect you."
"From what? The person I should be?"
"No, him!" Luke gestured to Snoke. "He is the reason your mother sent you away. To protect you from his manipulation."
Angry tears stained his face. "Leaving my mother tore me apart...now I'm going to make you suffer as I did!"
''Ben..."
"Kill him," Snoke ordered, handing Ben a lightsaber from beneath his robe. "Kill him now. Do it."
Ben ignited the weapon, the red glow casting an eerie glow off his face. He hesitated at first, uncertain. Luke took that moment to flee back into the woods.
"Don't let him escape!" Snoke growled. "I don't care if every tree burns on this blasted planet, I want that Jedi dead!"
Not wanting to anger his new master or waste another precious moment, Ben took off after his uncle. Snoke remained behind, watching his new apprentice go. "Yes...this is the boy I am looking for. He will do great things for me as...Kylo Ren."
I turned away, not being able to watch this horrific event unfold any longer. "Anakin, please end the visions. It is too painful to bare..."
Anakin nodded, thankfully sympathetic. "I brought you here to show you exactly the person you are being trained by...and the one you claim to love. Please heed my warning and do not train in the ways of the Dark Side. Otherwise, you will end up just as he did. And I know you're a better person than that."
"I don't want any of this," I admitted, falling onto my knees. I held my head in my hands, trying to hold back the tears that wanted to escape. "I just want to go home..."
"Only you can make that happen..." His voice ended in an echo but I didn't notice, too emotionally distraught.
A hand suddenly appeared on my shoulder. Not a ghost hand, a real, human hand that I could feel. Startled, I shrieked and jerked myself away, throwing a hard punch behind me. It connected, though the person wasn't fond of being hit.
Kylo rubbed his sore jaw as his eyes stung me like tasers. "What the heck?! I come outside to check on you and I get punched? What's wrong with you?! That's the second time I get hurt for being your hero!"
Rattled by the sudden change of events, I took a moment to see I was back in the present, right back in the courtyard amidst the darkness of Devaron. The vision messed me up so badly I was shaking, yet I tried to conceal it to avoid questioning.
I gulped, looking back at the annoyed Dark Knight. "Um, I am so sorry..."
"Oh, you will be."
There's that "warning" tone. Well...time to go.
As if sensing my movements before I even made them, he grabbed hold of me and dragged me back to the water fountain, forcing me to sit down on the ledge. He stood over me, staring me down like a prison guard. Obviously, questioning is something I will not be able to avoid after all.
Kylo crossed his muscular, bare arms. A thin, black tank top and boxers was all he was wearing. He looked flipping hot beneath the twin moon's rays. I did my best not to stare. "Mind telling what the heck you were doing outside of the Temple in the middle of the night? Do you even know what kind of creatures live out there? Some are definitely carnivorous. Not all are happabores or pikrohns."
"Sorry." That is literally the only word I could think of saying. Between the way he looks and the aftermath of the vision, my thoughts are swirling like a tornado.
His dark eyes dug into me. "You seem so...distracted."
Oh great, he's onto me. I tried not to panic as I forced my mind to work, hoping he wouldn't persist with probing. "Um, I'm just tired is all."
"Just 'tired'?"
I nodded. "Yeah, that is how I got outside. Sleepwalking."
"Sleepwalking."
"Are you going to repeat everything I say?"
He leaned in closer, placing his hands on my thighs as support. I fought off a shiver. Just his touch was making me go crazy. My nerves were on fire. Did it suddenly get hotter out here?
His brown eyes searched mine. "You're hiding something from me..."
My focus was more on his hands. That distraction was enough to make me stammer. "What? No. Why would I do that? What would I even have to hide? I couldn't sleep and went outside for some air."
"You claimed before you were sleepwalking."
Insert curse word here. "Um...I...well...um..."
"I don't stand for liars, Summer." Kylo's stare showed he was not in the mood for excuses. His patience was thinning and I was losing. "You know I will get the truth out of you, using whatever means necessary. Cooperation would save us both some...unpleasant experience."
Sometimes I think this man finds pleasure picking my brain apart for practically meaningless information.
"I find no pleasure from it, I assure you," Kylo said, as if I spoke that thought aloud.
I narrowed my eyes. With the state I'm in, my defenses are down and I didn't even realize he already entered my thoughts. "Quit reading my mind. There are personal thoughts you don't need to see."
"I already know you find me attractive, if that is what you're referring to." A smirk grew in his face. "But I'm seeing something else...something very...interesting."
I recognized the pain in my head and tried to fight, but he easily broke down any barrier I threw at him. At least the pain was tolerable...for now. And with the state I'm in, there's no way I can make a connection to the Force and he knows it. I'm completely at his mercy.
His hands moved and I instinctively grabbed his wrists, not letting him get any ideas. He looked down at his hands then back at me. "Don't trust me?"
"N-No," I admitted. Right now, I don't trust him. My mind is being read, he is way too close for comfort, and I'm on edge from Anakin.
Kylo cocked his head, either diving deeper into my thoughts, for the pain got worse, or encountering surprise from his findings. "You don't trust your master?"
He made a single attempt to free his wrists but I gripped them tighter, preventing movement. Though with his muscular build, if he really wanted to, he could break free in an instant.
"I-I trust you...to an extent."
"Do you?"
My mouth was starting to become dry and I timidly nodded for response.
Kylo, eyes locked on mine, removed his hands from my thighs, placing them on the fountain's ledge instead, one on each side of me. I felt like I could finally breathe again, but still barely. Despite him letting me go, I was still imprisoned between his biceps. My heart was pounding in my ears as Kylo leaned closer. "After all this time, you're still afraid of me."
How can one not be? He is completely unpredictable. I never know how he will react to anything. His temperament is a constantly lit fuse; the situation being how long the fuse is before explosion.
"You're misinterpreting my emotions," I managed to say. I never have a problem speaking up to anyone, but Kylo drains my body of courage.
His stare was fixated on me but he seemed to be looking through me. "I am clearly reading your feelings. You can't possibly deny them."
"I am not afraid of you."
"Oh, but you are." Kylo moved over to my ear, his breath making my heart speed back up. He kept his voice soft, but the deepness is what got to me. The tone was so sexy... "I feel it. Fear. Anxiety. Worry. You actually think I want to kill you."
"Just stop it, Kylo-"
"You sometimes can't sleep at night as you wonder what the next day will bring-"
"Kylo, I said-"
"Silence." A gentle peck behind my ear shut me up. "Your feelings for me are stronger than they should be. You need to work on destroying them somehow or you won't progress as my apprentice." Then backed off me, standing up straight. "Now I suggest you try to go back to sleep. The days here are shorter than what you're used to. You're going to be very tired tomorrow morning if you don't get some rest."
He walked off and I just sat there on the fountain, stunned. He was probing me, then he then just releases me? Not that I mind, but that is totally uncharacteristic of him. And his light kiss was still lingering...
What just happened?
I went back inside the Temple to the room we chose for the night. Kylo was curled up in his sleeping bag once again, looking fast alseep. I, on the other hand, am so distraught from everything tonight that I'm going to be awake for a while.
I lied down in my sleeping bag anyway, trying to calm down and clear my mind so I could just relax. Instead the worst of tonight's flashback kept appearing before my eyes, so I ended up crying until I finally drifted off to sleep...
Hux POV
New day. More things to do. Too many problems.
That's a typical day in the First Order, though today was different. Everything was running smoothly. I actually received good news today from an officer stating our fleet will be growing. More Resurgent-class Destroyers along with hundreds of TIE Fighters were near completion far out in the Unknown Regions and I couldn't be more pleased. Supposedly the Order just took on full support from a whole solar system, and they were using their support to rebuild our fleet. The new Starkiller Base will skip them.
I was about to contact Snoke when a tech ran into my office. "Sir, we have contact with the reconnaissance ships to Ahch-To."
I looked up from my computer. "Splendid. What is their findings?"
The tech was slow to answer. "Well, there is a bit of an issue with the connection-"
I stood from my chair and crossed the room to him. "What sort of issue?"
* * * * * *
I followed the tech to a console on the bridge, where a different tech was struggling to keep a signal to the ships. "I want an update," I demanded.
"Ever since the ships entered the atmosphere, we can't seem to be able to talk to them." He fiddled with some knobs in front of him and pressed one side of headphones to his ear so he could continue to converse with me.
I stood over him, arms crossed. "Define the problem."
"Um, like I said, the signal is weakening due to a reason we have not yet figured out."
"Well, figure it out!"
"Trying to, sir." The tech began to sweat under the pressure. He kept playing with the device and going back to the headphones. "It's very distorted. I can't make out anything."
"Use a computer or droid then if you're too incompetent," I snarled.
"That's not the problem, sir. It's just static."
I tried to control my temper. "Perhaps the pilot's can still hear us. Tell them to leave the planet. That may fix the signal."
"Already tried that. They aren't repsonding."
"Why not?"
The tech was probably wishing to be anywhere but at the brunt of my frustration right now. "Probably because of the the connection, sir."
"Then fix it!"
He swiveled his chair back to his station, doing everything possible with the console to spare himself from my wrath.
I all but stamped my foot impatiently. "Update."
"Nothing yet, sir."
"And why not?"
"It will take time for me to figure out the issue then correct it, General."
I knew further rattling him was pointless. I turned away from him. "Keep me posted."
I swear I heard him sigh relief. "Yes, sir."
I walked across the catwalk, standing in front of the grand windshields, staring out into the depths of space. Pacing was a waste of engery, so I forced myself to remain still.
"General Hux?"
Please be good news. Today was going so well. I turned back to a different tech than who I was dealing with before. "Report."
The tech was nearly shaking. "We have lost all contact with the ships. Not just the signal, but also their tracking system."
I was ready to erupt. "You mean to tell me they just disappeared? Explain to me how my ships will just disappear!"
I had the whole attention of the bridge from raising my voice but I didn't care. It's best they know what happens when they fail their jobs.
"It could be a malfunction."
"On all of them?!"
"The entire ship would have to be destroyed," the tech nervously replied, trying to stay collected. "They would have to explode by some sort of accident, such as a crash."
"Or attack."
"That too, sir."
My mind began working on the possibilities of the Resistance knowing our trip to Ahch-To. Or even worse, were they planning on using that plant as another base?
The tech was becoming uneasy from my sudden quietness. "General?"
"Contact Supreme Leader Snoke. He needs to know of this."
"Yes, sir. Um, though what about Kylo Ren?"
I cursed beneath my breath. He will have to be informed of this too. "I'll personally see to that."
Summer POV
I opened my eyes then squinted at sunlight peering in through cracks in the ceiling. I rolled over to escape it, only to be greeted with more rays. Giving up, I got up out of the sleeping bag, feeling every pressure point in my body. I winced as I stretched, my muscles aching from lack of comfort. A sleeping bad doesn't compare to a mattress.
I walked over to the far side of the room, peaking out at the courtyard through what should have been a window. Kylo was already out there meditating by the fountain. I sighed. Another day of training lies ahead. I should be excited for this...but I'm just not.
I went back across the room, accidentally kicking a small device on the floor. A hologram appeared and I screamed with surprise, stumbling backwards onto the hard, stone floor. That hurt.
"Kylo Ren, are you there?"
I rubbed my now throbbing head and sat forward. I peaked up at the hologram, which being life-sized, was peering down with unexpected surprise. "You're not Ren."
"I sure hope not," I said as I rose to my feet. I was now nearly eye to eye with the general.
Hux thankfully didn't pick up on my comment. "Is Ren there?"
"Meditating."
"Blast. Could you bother him anyway?"
I gave him an are you serious expression. "I don't feel like dying today. Nice try. You can't get rid of me that easily."
Hux rolled his eyes. "Oh however would I manage..."
"I think I may be growing on you," I said, smirking.
"Yes, like mold on stale bread." He probably didn't mean it as a joke but I laughed anyway. "Why would I want to have more affiliation with you than necessary?"
"Because you want another massage."
Hux was actually at a loss for words. And despite the fuzzy, blue appearance of his hologram, I could see his cheeks heating up. I stifled back laughter, watching him stutter over his choice of words. Noticing that, he shot me a look that could kill. "Stop that."
I was going to burst soon. "What?"
"Laughing."
"I'm not laughing-"
"You look like Alderaan trying to hold itself together when the Death Star hit it."
I lost it. I couldn't hold it in anymore.
Hux crossed his arms, waiting for me to catch my breath before continuing. "Have you quite finished?"
I wiped away a tear. "Ah, okay. I'm done."
He let out an exasperated sigh. "Just notify Ren I called. I need to speak with him as soon as possible."
"Is there a problem?"
"This is classified information for his eyes and ears only. It's none of your concern."
I bit my lip with frustration. "When are you going to start trusting me?"
"I don't even trust Ren but he's the commander in chief," Hux said. "Young lady, I don't have time to converse all morning with you. Pass the message on to Ren that I called. I'll be waiting for his reply."
The hologram disappeared before I could say anything else. How rude. He just hung up on me.
I turned around and jumped at sight of Kylo standing in the doorway. I clenched my chest, making sure my heart was still beating after two scares this morning. "Please...do not sneak up on me like that!"
Kylo walked up to the holoprojector, standing beside me. "What did Hux desire of me?"
"I don't know, he wouldn't tell me," I said, annoyed. "He just wanted to speak to you. He doesn't trust me."
"I trust you."
I stared at him, not knowing how to react. He did the same, almost not believing what he spoke. It was an awkward stare off until Kylo turned away and cleared his throat. "Hux needs to respect you now since you're my apprentice, but he doesn't respect anyone but himself. Don't feel bad; he never treats me equally. How about you head out to the courtyard and start meditating while I see what the ginger head wants."
I giggled, picking up a food pack and canteen of water before I left. "Have fun. His mood is most enjoyable..."
Kylo merely shrugged. "When is it not? "
Kylo POV
I waited for Summer to leave then I contacted the Order, Hux instantly answering. It's like he was waiting by the holoprojector for my call. He was probably timing how long it took for my answer. "You wanted me?"
Hux crossed his arms behind his back, standing up taller. "Yes, it's about the reconnaissance ships."
I was immediately intrigued. "The ones to Ahch-To? What did they find?"
He pursed his lips. "Well, we don't know."
I clenched my fists. Anger was rising in me like a tidal wave. "How the Force-"
"Before you unleash your tantrum on the room, let me finish," Hux interrupted, trying to control his own temper. "The ships entered the atmosphere and the signal was lost. Not only can we not contact them, but the ships' tracking systems have malfunctioned or been destroyed, possibly by an enemy attack. We have no idea where they are, if any of the pilots are even alive. I have word into Snoke but I have not yet received a reply."
I took a few breaths so I could talk properly. "So we're right back where we started."
"Yes and no. Yes because we have no further information about the planet, and no because we tracked the ships all the way to Ahch-To, so it does confirm your map is correct."
"How do you know the ships even made it to Ahch-To?"
"I had a tech scan the last contact from one of the ships, and the pilot was confirming they found the planet and were entering. After that, the signal was destroyed."
I thought for a reason behind this mystery. Was it Luke? Did he use the Force and sense we were coming? Or was it that scavenger? "So whatever, or more so whoever, was on the planet must have either been expecting our ships or have an excellent self defense system. I doubt they all malfunctioned at once."
Hux nodded. "I agree." Never heard those words come out of him before. "It's more likely the ships were compromised or shot down. I don't want to send out more to find out the answer. We can't afford to lose that many ships."
"So what do you suggest?"
Hux inhaled deeply and blew his breath out slowly, pondering. "I'm not sure." Another sentence never spoken by him. "I'm waiting for Snoke's reply before making any decisions."
"Wise choice. Let me know what becomes of this."
"Of course." I pressed a button and the hologram fizzled into thin air. I went deep into thought, puzzling over the cause of our missing ships. Something doesn't feel right in the Force...looks like I need to meditate even more than Summer.
I stormed out of the room, following the long disheveled corridors until I found the entry to the courtyard. I paused before stepping foot onto the field, sensing something. I closed my eyes. An aura was radiating from behind the fountain, one pure and wholesome. Like a Jedi.
I kept one hand on my lightsaber hilt as I crossed the courtyard in the direction of the fountain. I walked around the other side and stopped, though I didn't relax. It wasn't a Jedi, but it was bad enough.
Summer was peacefully meditating on the ledge of the fountain. That wasn't the problem. The Force flowing from her was as tranquil as could be. The Light was strong within her. Too strong.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, took of breath, then firmly adressed her. "Darth Shadow."
Summer POV
I'm actually growing to like this. Being one with the Force has opened my eyes to so many natural wonders I never would have stopped to notice. Everything is so peaceful, so happy, so luscious...
Until an ominous shadow appears in my vision. I know who that is.
"Darth Shadow."
I opened my eyes and looked up at Kylo, who didn't seem very pleased with me. "Um, yes?"
"Your meditation," he said as if that answered my question.
I uncrossed my legs, letting them dangle over the fountain's ledge. "Oh I'm progressing so well. Letting myself connect to the Force is so much easier compared to yesterday. It is the most amazing feeling."
"Yes, if you were a Jedi." My spirits where squashed like a bug. "Summer, now since you made the connection, the Dark Side needs to be your focus. You have to learn how to call upon the Force without mediating first."
"But Jedi can do that without using the Dark Side," I pointed out.
"But you're not training to be a Jedi, are you?"
I wish. "Well, no-"
"Then the Dark Side is where you're going to be," Kylo said. Or more like commanded. "This is the Code of the Sith: 'Peace is a lie. There is only passion. Through passion I gain strength. Through strength I gain power. Through power I gain victory. Through victory my chains shall be broken. The Force shall free me.' If you follow the steps in the code, you will truly become a Sith Apprentice."
I reluctantly nodded. A promise is a promise. "Alright. Where do I begin?"
"With realization that peace is a lie." I swear his eyes became darker. "Allow me to tell you a story about how the so-called 'heroes' of the Galactic War destroyed the future for the entire galaxy..."
I know the story by heart. Watching Rogue One and the episodes with Luke Skywalker tells it all. But I feel like the story coming from Kylo is going to be very dark and twisted, so far from the original version I may have nightmares of it....
Poe Dameron POV
BB-8 beeped curiously at the back of my X-Wing as we came out of hyperspace, the noise coming over my headset. I could use the translator but binary is as easy for me to understand as Basic. I laughed as we approached a large, green planet which came up on my computer screen as Devaron. "Yes, Devaron is really green."
More beeps streamed into another question.
"More than D'Quar? Maybe."
My sleekly pained X-Wing entered the atmosphere, skimming through the clouds. Once we broke through, I turned on the scanners to see where Kylo Ren's command shuttle was hiding. "The Jedi Temple of Eedit is our first stop. Keep an eye out for any signs of the shuttle BB-8. Your fiber optics may pick up on something my scanners miss."
BB-8 beeped back acknowledgment, his head swiveling in every direction. I kept the X-Wing low but I tried to stay high enough not to be seen. "If Kylo is here, we'll find him."
Summer POV
I pretended to be listening intently to Kylo, instead wishing his lecture was over. A low, whirring sound in the distance grabbed my attention but I tried to ignore it. The sound approaching fast, I looked towards the sky, eyes scanning the blue atmosphere.
Kylo, disgruntled, cleared his throat to redirect his attention to him. "Darth Shadow, are you listening?"
I kept my stare upwards. "Do you hear that?"
"What?"
"It's like...humming. Like-"
"Engines." Kylo suddenly became pale. "The Resistance! Get back into the Temple, now!"
I didn't have a chance to argue. He grabbed my arm and pulled me across the field, making me have to run to keep up. We ran through the corridors until we hit the one we chose as our "safe room" (this is where we slept, ate, ect.). He pushed me inside, breathing heavily. "Stay here. Hide as best as you can from any intruders if whoever is out there happens to want a peak inside."
Everything is happening too fast. "Wait, where are you going?"
"Back to the shuttle. I can't hide it from their scanners, but I can prevent them from seeing it."
"How do you do that-"
"Just keep quiet and hide!" Kylo snapped, darting out of the room. "I'll come back for you!"
"Promise?" I called out, afraid of being stranded here.
Kylo reappeared in the doorway and firmly nodded. "Promise." Then he was out of sight.
I was getting a sick feeling over this whole scenario. Maybe it was the Force or my own paranoia, but it better be wrong.
Otherwise...that may be the last time I lay my eyes onto Kylo Ren.
Kylo POV
I rushed back into the cave, hurtling myself over the rock barricade and straining to memorize the path Luke showed me when I first came here. It was all coming back to me...
"This is an emergency escape route for whatever the reason may be," Luke said to the hopeful Jedi before him, including myself. "Hopefully none of you will ever need a use for it, but there is no such thing as being too cautious."
"Isn't the Empire dead?" I recalled myself asking.
The Jedi Master nodded. "Indeed but unfortunately there are still those who dwell on the terroristic ways of the Empire. They hide amongst the shadows, and I fear the day when they might try to return and regain their power."
At the time, I scoffed at his comment. Now it was almost haunting to me.
I snapped back into reality and shook off the memory. I need to keep my mind here and now if I want to outsmart the Resistance fighter (fighters?) coming our way.
I found the entrance to the cave and quickly tied the rope stashed behind the rock to it, then threw the end over the side. I began to lower myself, a bit too fast at first for I almost lost my grip twice, then I finally reached the ground.
I ran across the dried riverbed to the shuttle, lowering the hatch and hurrying inside. I rummaged through the secret compartments I knew of the ship, hoping I still had a stash of...
Memetic sheets. Our last hope. When turned on, these dull, gray blankets would blend whatever lies beneath it in with its surroundings. I just hope the battery holds out long enough.
I jumped into the cockpit and retracted the wings, which would cut the length of them in half so they're easier to cover. Then I grabbed the stash of memetic sheets and lugged them back outside, starting to unfold them.
The next task would be extremely tedious and difficult. I would solely have to use the Force and hope the wind wouldn't become a problem.
I lifted one blanket at a time, it magically flying through the air then covering whatever portion of the shuttle I wished. Then with a wave of my hand I turned on the actuator and that section of the shuttle disappeared, looking like the forest behind it. I breathed relief. Thank the Force the battery is still working.
It seemed to take ages but I finally covered the shuttle the best that I could. The wind was nasty but my determination overpowered it. Once all the actuators were turned on, the shuttle looked no different then Eedit's scenery.
I stood back and smirked. Once again, I'm one step ahead of the Resistance.
As if on que, an X-Wing passed by overhead and I tracked it until it was out of sight. I felt a lump grow in my throat as the X-Wing landed just on the other side of the cliff. Right where the Temple was.
Only one thought came to my mind: Summer.
Poe Dameron POV
This has to be a mistake. The scanner must be malfunctioning. "Weird. I see the Temple but the computer is reading a ship as well." I peered down over the side of the cockpit, spotting the somehow standing Jedi Temple but no ship.
BB-8 beeped ecstatically and I double checked the scanners. "So it's not incorrect. You read it too?"
A positive response made my decision of what to do next. "I'm going to check this out. Prepare for landing."
Questioning beeps came over my headset. "I can find a place to land, no worries. The courtyard behind the Temple has enough room." And I am the best pilot in the Resistance. This is simple.
I lowered the X-Wing from the sky. The whine and wind from my engines made the native animals scurry for cover and the trees sway and bend. The X-Wing shook slightly as we touched the surface then I turned off the engines. I opened the hatch and jumped out, taking my first breath of fresh air. After a while, the recycled air begins to taste like your sweat.
BB-8 lowered himself from the backseat compartment, rolling up beside me. I scanned the forest surrounding us. First Order snipers or spies were my only worry. The trees are dense enough to hide a person easily. "See anything buddy?"
After a few moments, he beeped back negatively.
That's a bit of relief. "Good. Keep an eye out while I change."
I stripped the heavy, sweat-ridden flight suit and helmet off me, leaving it in the cockpit. I switched it out for the hefty EL-16HFE blaster rifle, which gave me more comfort since I now have self defense. I checked to make sure it was loaded then knelt down to BB-8. "Guard the X-Wing while I take a look around. Oh and here." I held out a comlink. "Notify me if you sense danger is near. Okay?"
A mechanical arm came out of BB-8's belly, gently taking the comlink from my hand. He beeped encouragingly but I couldn't help but think he was sulking. "Don't worry about me. I always come back for you, don't I?"
He nodded the best he was capable of.
"Time me if it will make you feel better. If I'm not out in fifteen minutes, come and get me. Alright?"
He nodded again, chirping eagerly. I smiled at him then started towards the Temple, keeping my eyes and ears on alert for a sneak attack. Despite my blaster, that is what concerned me. There are so many places for someone to hide, between the foliage and ruins, that I probably won't see them coming. Maybe it's stupid not to bring BB-8 along but then if someone is here, well, a T-70 X-Wing will go for quite a few credits on the black market. Then add a droid and a well-known Resistance pilot for the slave market and you're pretty well off.
I try to stay out of First Order media and propaganda for sanity reasons but I can't help but wonder how they feel towards me. They know I escaped prison with a "traitor" but what about the destruction of Starkiller Base? Do they know that it was my doing? No, I wasn't the only X-Wing dropping bombs and taking out TIE Fighters as fast as possible, but I was the only X-Wing who flew into the thermal oscillator and caused it to collapse, which eventually made the planet self-destruct. Sometimes I feel like I have a "wanted" sign hanging over my head. How many bounty hunters are after me?
My thoughts continued to churn but I tried to stay focused, otherwise I might as well not even be armed. I took a few breaths to clear my mind then entered the Jedi Temple, keeping my blaster aimed at everything around me.
I followed multiple passageways, most probably more than once. This place is much larger than anticipated. It doesn't look this huge from the sky.
I check every room I passed, entering some that had potential hiding places and passing the empty ones. Each time I prayed I wouldn't see a dark, robed man with his new Force-Sensitive trainee waiting to slaughter me. Because of this I stayed extra alert, not relaxing for a moment even after I saw the room was clear of assassins.
One room I almost skipped when I noticed the remnants weren't natural.
Unlike the other rooms that had crumbled pieces of the walls or ceiling along with what I hoped weren't fragments of skeletons, this room held two sleeping bags, small crates of food, and duel, empty luggage carriers. This is not from ages ago, it looks like a slumber party was thrown here yesterday. Or...someone is camping out. A First Order fugitive perhaps?
I kept my blaster at ready as I stepped into the room, taking light steps to hinder noise. I moved every object in here with my foot, hoping nothing was going to pop out from behind it. Though that would certainly surprise me because that's not Kylo Ren's strategy. He doesn't hide, he just bluntly faces you and kills without hesitation.
Satisfied with my findings, I let out my breath, realizing I was holding it from stress of the unknown.
Summer POV
I just got myself covered behind the sleeping bags when I heard footsteps coming up the corridor. Minutes later they entered this room, shuffling around, walking every inch of it. A sudden loud thump! made me jump and almost cry out with surprise. What the heck is this person doing?
Listening more intently to the noise made me realize this person was searching through the items in the room. Kicking them, maybe? That's what it sounded like. Wait, does that mean-
I held my tongue as a sudden blow came to my "shield". The sleeping bags were thankfully fluffy but I still felt that right in the stomach...
I then heard the footsteps retreating. Oh good. The person didn't suspect anyone was here.
Then the worst thing possible happened: my nose itched. This place was full of dust, dirt, and mold, all of them stirring up my allergies. And lying on the floor which naturally had a thick layer of it wasn't helping.
I tried to hold it in, but it just wasn't going to happen.
So I did it. I sneezed.
Next thing I knew, a shot was fired and the sleeping bags exploded in front of me...
Poe Dameron POV
A noise came from behind the sleeping bags and I instinctively fired my blaster at them. The impact was so great (thanks to my awesome model) that it literally blew the bags to pieces. It looked like a flurry of snow in the room from the stuffing. It was blown up into the air, which currently made me feel like I was in the midst of a blizzard.
As it was starting to settle, I spotted a human crouched in the corner. I raised my blaster, ready to fire again if necessary. "Who are you?"
Summer POV
A voice echoed across the room, demanding my identity. I waited for the "snow" to finish falling so I could see the person clearly. I blinked. My jaw probably dropped. I couldn't believe it.
Poe Dameron, the charming Resistance pilot who has stolen far too many hearts on social media, stood before me, an exceptionally large blaster in hand. "I said, who are you?"
I finally found my tongue. "Um...me?" Oh, yeah, great first impression.
His eyes narrowed. "Yes, you. To your feet, now! And keep you hands where I can see them! I may be kind enough to refrain from pulling the trigger."
I held my arms up as I slowly rose to my feet. "I'm free of weapons. Search me if you don't believe me."
His eyes scanned me then he shook his head, satisfied. His tousled hair bounced slightly. "You seem clear. Now I will ask this one final time, who are you?"
What name do I give him? I guess my cover. I don't know. "Shadow." I refrained from adding the "Darth" part because that will probably guarantee a hole in my chest.
"What affiliation do you have with the First Order?" Before I could answer, he added, "And don't try to deny it. The logo is all over your uniform."
I glanced down at my black suit, noticing the symbol on the sleeves. I felt ashamed to wear this right now. "Um, I'm not anyone of high rank. Really. I'm no one special."
"State your title."
I swallowed nervously. He will definitely shoot me for this. "Sith Apprentice."
The pilot looked up for the first time from his blaster. "You're the Force-Sensitive Kylo Ren brought here to train."
I nodded, impressed. The Resistance have more eyes than I thought.
He still kept his weapon aimed at me. "I want to know everything he has told you. First Order secrets, plots, weaknesses, anything. And then maybe, just maybe, I'll spare you."
"Please don't shoot me Poe," I begged.
He paused at the mention of his name. "You know who I am?"
I nodded again, maybe too eagerly. "Yeah, you blew up Starkiller Base."
He eyed me questionly. "And...you're not upset about that, being a member of the First Order?"
I sighed. Might as well come clean if I'm going to die. "Look, I never wanted this. But here I am, dragged into the conflict of the galaxy."
"Welcome to my life," Poe chimed. "So what were you before the war?"
"A normal girl. That is...until Kylo kidnapped me."
His eyes widened and he slowly lowered his blaster. "You were kidnapped? What for?"
I let my arms hang back at my sides, waiting for the feeling to return. "My hold in the Force. Kylo wanted to turn me to the Dark Side so he had the advantage over Rey and Luke. He thought I could help him defeat them."
"Are you going to?"
"I don't want any of this. I don't want to be his apprentice and train with the Dark Side at all. I'm forced to do this. I don't have a choice in anything anymore."
Poe took time to process this. Then he muttered apologetically, "I'm sorry."
For the moment our eyes met and I felt like there was a connection between us. Something clicked. It was a mutual feeling we both could share and relate to. We both have that same need in our eyes. Each of us had some tough times, we're on opposite sides, yet we have sympathy towards the other. It was a feeling that we each have been deprived of for longer than can be said. But to know there are others out there going through the same troubles and hardships of life yet finding the strength to fight and go on for what you believe in...is a feeling that is truly indescribable.
Poe finally broke eye contact. "So...if you're the trainee, where is the trainer?"
I shrugged. "I have no idea."
He was about to speak again when he suddenly went on alert, backing out of the room and pausing right outside in the corridor. His eyes wide, he raised his blaster and started firing down the corridor. A red light flashed from further down, followed by an all too familiar hiss, and began deflecting each bolt.
Playtime was boring the enemy for Poe suddenly became paralyzed in the Force, dropping his weapon on command. He tried to move but was as frozen as the half-destroyed Jedi statue beside him.
As soon as the red light disappeared, I joined the duo in the corridor. Poe, who could scarcely move his eyeballs, followed me the best that he could, silently pleading for mercy.
I ran up to Kylo, who was far too much enjoying his prize catch of the day. He spoke before I could. "Look at the man before you, Darth Shadow." He was careful to use my Sith name. "This is the rebel scum who blew up our base. The so-called 'best pilot in the Resistance'." He stepped closer to Poe, who tried not to show fear. "You will not escape us again this time."
"Give me a challenge then," Poe managed to counter with what use of his jaw Kylo let him have. "Because I'll break out on the first day, just like before. Heck, I won't even need a defecting Stormtrooper this time. You know how helpful he has been? All the secrets he has told the Resistance? A shame you don't have loyal men working for you."
In a flash, Kylo backhanded Poe across the jaw and the pilot stumbled sideways to the ground. He didn't move after, unconscious from either the blow or the Force.
I tried to hold back tears as horror played out before my eyes. "Kylo..." That's all I could mange to say without crying.
He glanced back, gaze darkening at my emotional state. "He is a traitor to the First Order! I should have killed him, but I'd rather play around with his stupid head. Let's see if he has acquired any more information since last time."
Kylo threw Poe over his shoulders and motioned towards the cave. "We need to leave before more troops arrive. Once they find out we kidnapped their precious pilot, they'll search over every inch of this place to find him or a clue of who did it. There's not a moment to lose."
He was already starting that way but I hesitated. "What about my training?"
"We will return as soon as I pick apart this idiot's brain. Now come on!"
I sighed. Arguing is pointless. I won't win. Not this time. But believe me, I will have my chance...

"Where's the shuttle?" I shouted up to Kylo, who was struggling to get down the climbing rope with the extra weight. I was already standing back in the dried up riverbed and far enough away to not be fallen upon if the incident might occur.
Kylo didn't answer until he reached the bottom. He readjusted Poe on his shoudler, groaning slightly. "You wouldn't imagine this guy is heavy. Okay, the shuttle is right in front of you."
I looked at the wide-open empty space then back at Kylo. "Um, no. It's not."
With a smirk, Kylo crossed the riverbed, pausing suddenly in the middle. He seemed to grab hold of something in midair then yanked it away, a piece of the shuttle appearing. He smirked. "Memetic sheets. Perfect way to hide a ship from the wandering eye."
I laughed, catching up to him. "Now I see what you meant by the Resistance seeing your ship without actually seeing it. Nice touch."
"Thanks." He pulled a lever and the ramp lowered, both of us scurrying into the shuttle for protection. He laid Poe down, a bit roughly in my opinion, then hopped into the cockpit, starting up the engines. "Keep an eye on him while I fly. In case he wakes up, just hit him in the head. He seems like an easy person to knock out."
This is one of those times that I wonder how Kylo Ren is human. I knelt beside Poe, gently cradling him in my arms. I propped his head up and stroked his silky, black hair. I fought off a smile. He was definitely handsome. A Star Wars Prince Charming without doubt.
The shuttle rose into the sky, leaving the atmosphere as fast as possible, then jumping to hyperspace.
Down below back on Devaron, a little droid watched helplessly as the shuttle disappeared into space. He wasn't capable of thinking, being a droid, but he somehow knew his master was in trouble.
Knowing he will need assistance to rescue him, BB-8 rolled beneath the X-Wing, a tube lowering to raise him into the backseat. Thankfully a pilot wasn't needed in the cockpit to fly, so BB-8 took the controls and raised the X-Wing into the sky. Then he was off into space, traveling as fast as the shuttle was in the opposite direction back to D'Quar.

General Hux greeted our arrival on the Finalizer. Though it wasn't a pleasant one. He was practically turning purple with anger. "What in the galaxy did you bring him back for?!"
Kylo passed the unconscious pilot to two waiting Stormtroopers before even looking in Hux's direction. "The Resistance knew of our presence on Devaron. I thought it would be wise to see if the idiot had any information useful to us."
"He's just a pilot-"
"That has direct ties to the general."
"Last time he was worthless. What makes you think a couple weeks will change his thoughts?"
"I don't have that answer until I physically check him myself, do I General?" Kylo spat his title out.
I could picture the steam rising off Hux's head. "You're making the First Order a purposed target-"
"I'll inform you of my findings." He rudely brushed past the general before Hux could say another word.
Hux pinched the bridge of his nose, attempting to keep his composure before addressing me. "Did you have a say in this?"
Oh I'm not getting attacked next. Sorry Kylo. Technically I'm not lying. "I wanted to leave him behind but Kylo insisted."
Hux groaned, marching away from me. He continued to talk as he left, which forced me to keep up with his brisk pace. I think he purposely did this sometimes. "Doesn't Ren ever think before doing acting? I swear, what does Snoke see in him?"
"It's only because of his heritage," I responded, though not fully knowing if I was meant to. "Surely you know that."
"I don't need to be mocked from a girl," he sneered. "And to answer your question, those matters are none of my concern. That's an entirely different side of this operation. I'm in the military, and Ren is in...whatever Ren is in. Though my title of High Command outweighs his Dark Knight status by a solar system. Would he ever respect that, no...not Ren. He's better. Always better." Hux all but spat in disgust. Then realizing his attitude, he collected himself. "My apologies for ranting. Someone of your level doesn't need to hear my problems."
I wanted to point out how I was closer to his "level" if not already passed it but I thought it was to keep my mouth shut. Now is not the time.
Officers approached Hux and I slowed my pace, eventually breaking away from him. He's much too busy to chat anyway, even if he wanted to (which I doubt).
I turned down a corridor, walking half-tranced. Did I really just meet Poe Dameron then watch Kylo kidnap him? It seems so surreal. I couldn't help but feel guilty for not intervening. I'm so afraid of the repercussions from Kylo that I just stood there and let Poe take it. I'm so pathetic.
Clanking of metal grabbed my attention. Captain Phasma was coming down the corridor, making her rounds, though she paused by me. "Darth Shadow. Kylo Ren requests your presence in the interrogation chamber."
I mentally cursed. A sick feeling grew in my gut. This is not going to end well...
* * * * * *
The door slid open to my command to the interrogation room. I gasped at the sight of Poe, bruised and a little bloody from being beaten, strapped to the inclined chair. Seeing the room was surprisingly empty, I rushed inside to him.
Poe barely was able to lift his head to look at me. "Shadow..."
I felt my eyes watering as I gently cupped his face, wiping some blood from his broken-open lip. "What did he do to you?"
"The Stormtroopers beat me out of unconsciousness, believe it or not." He winced as I accidentally touched his black eye. "Worst way to wake up. I thought it was a nightmare. That was the biggest shock of life to find out it was actually happening to me."
"Poe, I'm so sorry I let this happen to you," I admitted, hating myself more with each passing second. "I should have done something. I could've intervened somehow. Maybe change Kylo's mind or-"
"You care about what happens to me?"
He looked as shocked as I was over those words. My mouth suddenly going dry for some reason, I only nodded.
"Then I was right about you."
I raised an eyebrow, curious. "About what?"
Poe forced a smile despite the pain. "About being on the right side."
I smiled along with him though it quickly faded. "I still could have done something..."
"Hey, this isn't your fault," Poe said, not sounding angry at all. "You couldn't have saved me." Seeing I was still blaming myself, he added, "Look at me Shadow."
I stared into his eyes, actually finding them quite nice to look at.
"I can see you're not one of them. I know you don't belong here. Never change Shadow. Never let the Dark Side or whatever the Jedi used to call it take you over. The Resistance need good people like you."
I found myself nodding in response. "I wish I could help."
"You can help." He lowered his voice, afraid of who might be listening. "Leave this place. Go to the hanger, steal a TIE, and get the heck out of here."
"But...what about you?"
He was surprised as I was for saying that. "Me? What about me?"
I pondered before responding. "I can't leave. Well, not yet anyway. But you can."
He studied me, curious.
"I will make it up to you for not saving your life. I promise to save you, somehow. I promise."
Before Poe could say a meaningful reply, the door opened with a familiar hiss. I didn't need to turn around. I knew who entered. I could feel him.
I backed away from Poe, giving him a sympathetic look. I will not break this promise.
Kylo walked inside and the door shut, locking itself. That noise echoed and it made me shudder. I'm locked in a room with Kylo Ren. What a dream come true.
His face masked, Poe could only stare at the tinted glass that separated him from the human male. "Visiting already? Miss me that much?"
Kylo straightened his back, towering over his prisoner. "You haven't changed I see."
If the pain wasn't so terrible, the pilot would've shrugged. "Why should I? Everyone loves me for me. At least I have friends."
"You mean the liars, traitors and murderers you call friends? How lucky you are for such a wonderful choice of people."
"Well, I'm not wanted dead by any of them."
I mentally pleaded Poe would be quiet for his own life's sake. I could tell Kylo's tolerance was thinning. "But you are by the First Order. Remember that."
That silenced the rebel for a moment. Kylo motioned for me to come over. I reluctantly did, having a bad feeling about what is yet to come.
"Consider this a lesson for you, my apprentice," Kylo said, easily staring Poe down. "How to read one's mind is vital to the survival of this military operation."
Poe and I exchanged a look of shock. "You mean I'm going to probe him?"
"No, I am. I want you to watch my actions very carefully. This is a training session for you."
The Dark Knight raised his hand in front of Poe's face. He tried to fight, but being weakened already, he quickly lost, and began writhing and crying out with agony from Ren's power. Kylo only seemed to increase his hold on him, worsening the pain.
Poe barely managed to open with eyes, which were pleading with mercy towards me. I can't bare to watch this torture play out before my eyes. This ends now.
"KYLO STOP!" Then I did the unthinkable. I pushed Kylo away from Poe, breaking the contact and releasing the pilot. Though it wasn't just a normal shove, it was a Force-Push. Kylo hit the wall hard, stunned for a moment. I was also shocked, staring at my own hands. Did I just do that...
Poe laid his head back against the chair, trying to calm down. He mouthed "thank you" knowing the punishment I'll be receiving from this.
Kylo came off the wall and rushed upon me, harshly grabbing my arm. "How dare you interrupt an interrogation with my prisoner?"
I stuttered, mostly trying to free my arm, which I don't think is getting blood through it. "I didn't...I mean...I thought...um..."
"Let her go."
Both of us looked at Poe, who in the condition he was in, still had a bit of fight in him. "Kylo Ren...let her go."
Kylo debated on his answer then pushed me away, pointing towards the door. "Go back to my private quarters immediately. We will discuss this later."
I rubbed my aching arm and glanced back at Poe. I can't just leave him.
Kylo had other intentions. "I said, leave!" He literally chased me out of the room and locked the door once I was outside. Breathing heavily, and free of his wrath, I weighed my options. Go back to Kylo's room and get screamed at (or worse) or...make my escape like Poe suggested. But I can't leave without Poe. I promised to help him and I won't break it.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling a headache coming on. What do I do?
Poe Dameron POV
A life for a life. She stood up to Kylo so I did the same. Both of us are going to pay heavily to the ruthless creature in front of me.
Once Shadow was gone, Kylo turned back to me, walking so close that his helmet was almost touching. "For the record, I did not release her because you requested. I take orders from no one except one person. And it's not you. Such will be the day I get bossed around by rebel scum."
I used whatever dignity I had left. "Well, that day came sooner than expected, didn't it?"
Steam was practically rising off his helmet. "I have had enough of your attitude..." Yep. I'm in trouble.
Kylo pressed his gloved fingers to my temples, inflicting a pain that I wonder if I could live through. It wasn't just in my head, it ran down my spine and throughout my body. It was like electric fire was being pumped through my bloodstream. Screaming was all I could do. Pleading was a waste of time and breath. It's a known fact that he is merciless to his victims.
Right before I lost consciousness (or life, I'm unsure), Kylo pulled his arms away. I was breathing harder than I ever had and hurting so badly I was shaking. He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look up at him. "You are useless to me. And now, you are another worthless being that slaved to the Resistance. Disgusting."
He released me then stormed out of the room, leaving me here in a state that the infirmary might question could survive. I know that he will return to kill me but he's making me suffer first. There are so many things worse than death...
I just hope Shadow will be all right.
Summer POV
I paced back and forth in Kylo's room, replaying my plan in my head. I just have to take whatever wrath is coming (hopefully some smart talking will ease his ire) and, as long as I survive, I'll be able to free Poe before Kylo ends him. That is if everything goes according to plan. If.
The door opened and Kylo stormed in, ripping his helmet off and throwing it to the ground in fury. I'm questioning my decision now... "What the Force was that?!"
Before I could plead innocent, I was shoved back against the wall and pinned there with all his strength. "How dare you try to save a life as worthless as his?"
Kylo was as rabid as I've ever seen him. I struggled not to show how scared I actually was. "I couldn't bare to see you hurt him-"
"Why do you know care about that traitor?" he growled. "He should mean nothing to you."
"He's still a human life-"
"A life that doesn't belong to the First Order is a life not worth saving."
I better figure out how to turn this around or I'm a goner. "Kylo, I'm sorry. I just...am not used to the Dark Side yet I guess."
"You're weak," he scolded. "Weak and foolish. You will never make it as my apprentice if you succumb to one's suffering."
"I'm sorry," I squeaked out, not knowing what else to say.
Kylo held me there longer than I desired then finally released me, turning away and breathing heavily, trying to calm himself down. I gave him his space. I didn't dare say a word whereas breathe too loud to set him off again.
Kylo soon faced me again, much to my disappointment. "Why did you want me to spare his life?"
Questioning is something I can't handle right now. If he entered my thoughts and sees what I'm planning to do...
Concerned with my silence, he repeated his question with a more assertive tone. "Summer, answer me."
My mind scrambled for an excuse. "I've only been here for about a week remember. This new life is a hard adjustment."
"Which you have had plenty of time to do so that is not the truth." Kylo walked towards me, cornering me yet again. I hate it when he does that.
"I'm not lying," I said, actually lying.
"We'll see." He didn't touch me, but he didn't have to, for I felt my body become glued to the wall. He leaned in close, his eyes staring into mine yet it seemed he was looking at something else. "Your feelings are clear to me. I can sense them. Fear. Confusion. Anxiety. Worry. Pain. And...compassion." He studied me suspiciously. "You have compassion for the enemy."
Hopefully that would be satisfactory enough and a probing session wasn't next. "You should know by now I'm not ever going to be like you," I managed to say with what use of my mouth I had. "The Dark Side will not ever take me over. I won't make the same mistake you did."
I saw the fire become lit in his eyes. I knew the buttons I was pushing were not ones to ever be touched but I pushed them anyway. I expected a large outburst of anger but he managed to keep his composure. "You are stupid to challenge me in the position you're in. Don't waste your breath on words that will only lead to repercussions you won't enjoy."
"I can say what I wish."
"No, you won't because you're afraid of me." Kylo raised his hand and I felt him attempt to probe my thoughts. But I was ready for him. I knew he would eventually make this move. I had a barrier built that he would have to work to destroy.
His brows knit with confusion at the fortress he encountered. He wasn't expecting to use such effort on me. He increased his hold and I felt the barrier crack but I also pushed just as hard to keep it together.
"You won't defeat me," he snarled. "I am stronger than you!"
Kylo threw everything he had at me and the barrier shattered like glass. As much I like to think I could defeat him, I'm just not strong enough yet...
His lips twisted to a smirk as he wandered through my thoughts for whatever interested him. Once again he prevented me from screaming so I just had to endure the torture.
He leaned closer again, his lips hovering over my ear. "That's a good girl...show me everything you know about the pilot..."
I couldn't fight if I wanted to. Resisting was a waste of energy at this point. I would need to save it for a more desperate use.
"I see it..." he murmured breathlessly. "Your feelings for him... You think he has a handsome face. A man who would give you all the love and kindness you desired. But...strange. I thought you were into me."
His lips traced behind my ear and down my neck, lightly gnawing at random spots to tantalize me. He snickered when I finally broke and softly moaned. "I knew you still loved me. The feeling towards Poe will never deepen over me. And I see...how you wished I would treat you like this more often. With my lips dancing across your skin like a stone skipping on a lake. Yes, I see everything..."
"Please...st-stop..." I choked out, finding it harder to breathe the more tantalizing he became.
"But you don't want me to..."
"Yes, I do...I want to be...free."
I gathered every bit I strength I had and pushed, hurtling past him and staggering down onto my knees. I was finally able to breathe again but I was panting hard. I stared at myself, moving my limbs at my will, not his. What did I just do...
I looked back at a just as awestruck Kylo Ren, who might as well have his jaw lying on the floor. "You...broke free of my power."
Overwhelmed, I couldn't even shrug for a reply.
Kylo also seemed at a loss for words. After a long, drawn out awkward silence, he added, "That has never happened before. No one has been able to break free of my Force hold on them." He swallowed hard. "Not even Rey."
I gasped. I'm more powerful than the descendant of probably a Skywalker or Kenobi? It took me a while, but I finally found my tongue. "You did say I had great potential though. Remember? When we first met?"
"I did, but I was not expecting this."
For him to admit something like that...I'm not sure if I should feel better or worse. "But isn't my power a good thing?"
He slowly nodded, as if covering up a deeper truth. "Yes...as long as it's controlled, then yes." Before I could ask anything else, he started for the door. Casually though, not hurrying, appearing deep in thought. "I need...I need to meet with someone for a while. Please excuse me."
Kylo left the room and I exhaled deeply, processing what I just did. I overpowered his hold on me somehow and broke free. But I've never seen or heard of someone doing that. Sometimes they can move a limb to call forth a weapon or throw something at the attacker, but never fully release themselves.
Am I really that powerful? Is Kylo Ren holding me back from what my true potential is? He originally said he would bring it out, but was that just a lie to make me stay with him?
Then it finally made sense to me. I've became a valuable pawn for whichever side wants to play me. "Whichever side I train with...will be the victor of this war."
Well, maybe I don't feel like playing this game.
Kylo POV
"The girl resisted you?!"
"Not just resisted, she completely broke away from my hold on her," I said to the oversized hologram in front of me. "I didn't think she was capable of such a feat. Her power is growing stronger each day-"
"And you still don't have control of her," Snoke criticized, shaking his ugly head. "I knew this would happen. This was why turning her was crucial to her training. If she discovers her true potential, she won't stay with the First Order."
"Supreme Leader there is too much Light in her. She won't succumb to my teachings."
"Then you have weakened, Kylo Ren," Snoke scolded. "Surely I have trained you better than this."
Must he play that card... "I can do this Supreme Leader, I just need your guidance."
"No, your time is up Kylo Ren. The girl needs to be trained one fully dedicated to the Dark Side, not one with conflicted feelings."
I hung my head. He wasn't lying. That was my only weakness. I never could fully destroy the Light in me... I raised my sight back up at him. "What do you want me to do, Supreme Leader?"
"The girl, the problem, must be solved. You have two choices: Either bring the girl to me so she can be turned and trained properly, or..." Snoke leaned closer to intimidate me. I can usually handle it but today it disturbed me because I know the outcome of this conversation.
"Kill her."

Hi lovely readers! Sorry the chapter took a while but I had so much I wanted to write and so little time...
But most of all, May the 4th be with you! Happy Star Wars Day! :D
I hope everyone enjoyed the chapter! Let me know what you think! How did I do on the flashback of Ben? I know nothing is confirmed until The Last Jedi or Episode 9 but this is how I imagined his fall to the Dark Side to be like.
Comments are always welcome! Let me know how I'm doing! Any character you would like to see more of? I'm always looking for ways to improve!
And also should I try a Poe/Summer thing? I don't know. I want to make Kylo jealous or have a drama where Summer gets feelings for someone else besides him. Sort of like Twilight I guess you could say. I thought about Hux but then I'm like that will never work...What do you think? Suggestions are welcome!
Please vote and share the chapter if you truly enjoyed it! :) and may the force be with you.
Pic of the chapter: so I put two. One is a creepy Kylo, the other is artwork of Poe's X-Wing. It sort of looks like he's flying over Devaron ;)
