PART 57

21:30, 6 September 2024

When Gu Wei saw the doctor emerge from the emergency room, he immediately approached. "Are you the patient’s family?" the doctor asked. Gu Wei was about to respond, but he stopped when he heard a voice behind him.

“I’m the patient’s wife,” Liying proudly announced as she walked towards them. Gu Wei shot her a sharp look. “What happened to my husband?” Liying asked, while the doctor glanced at Gu Wei. With a meaningful grin, Gu Wei replied, “Don’t listen to her. I’m Wang Yibo’s husband,” he said firmly, turning his gaze to Liying, and he saw the shock written all over her face.

Liying’s jaw dropped. Gu Wei gently lifted her chin to close her mouth. “Are you surprised, my dear sister, that I’m alive? Well, I can’t blame you. I, too, was surprised to find out that I’m a favorite of the heavens.”

Flashback

It was after Lara and Katrina finished talking to Mianmian. When Mianmian left, both Lara and Katrina were left in a daze, shocked by what they had just heard.

“All these years we were angry at him and I didn’t even know he was suffering alone,” Katrina whispered. They decided they needed to talk to Gu Wei. They called him multiple times, but he didn’t answer.

Meanwhile, Gu Wei was staring blankly at a canvas when his phone suddenly rang. He didn’t pay attention to it, not even bothering to check who was calling. After several minutes of continuous ringing, he finally picked up, having no choice. “Why are you calling?” he asked immediately, sounding exhausted. His mind was already weighed down, and he didn’t want anything else to add to it.

“C-can we talk to you?” Katrina stammered on the other end of the line.

“If it’s over the phone, that’s fine,” Gu Wei replied, but on the other side, Lara and Katrina exchanged glances. “Can we meet in person, even just for a little while?” Katrina asked hesitantly.

Gu Wei glanced at the clock—it was almost 10 p.m. He sighed. “Okay, just tell me where,” he said. “Alright, we’ll send the details,” Katrina quickly replied before hanging up. A few seconds later, Gu Wei received a message from her with the location.

He quickly changed clothes and quietly left the house. It wasn’t hard for him to sneak out unnoticed, as Jiyang and Haoxuan weren’t home. They were at a bar, tailing Eros and Liying to figure out what Yibo was planning. That left only Lay, Gu Wei, and the helpers in the house. Gu Wei didn’t bring his phone or the audio link connected to Jiyang and Haoxuan.

He arrived at the location in no time, taking a taxi. It turned out to be a modest house. Gu Wei was taken aback when he saw the tear-streaked faces of Lara and Katrina. Concerned about what had happened, he tried not to show his worry.

“What happened?” he asked immediately. Lara and Katrina exchanged another glance, both struggling to hold back their tears.

Katrina didn’t waste any time. “We know you already have a fiancé, and from what we see, Lay is taking good care of you,” she began. “But if you were to return to Yibo as Xiao Zhan, you’d still have more rights over him. In the eyes of both God and the law, you’re still his legal spouse.”

Gu Wei’s eyes widened in shock. “What are you talking about?” he asked angrily.

“As I told you over the phone, your parents and we never agreed to that marriage,” Katrina said, turning her gaze toward her. Gu Wei looked at Lara, his mother, and couldn’t stop his tears from falling. “Don’t you have anything to say?” he asked her.

Lara averted her eyes. “We opposed their marriage to the point where we gave her a choice: Yibo or her family. But your sister’s obsession with Yibo made her choose him,” Lara explained, taking a deep breath before continuing. “If we had known she would go as far as having you kidnapped, we would’ve forced her to go abroad, even if you didn’t want that,” Lara added, leaving Gu Wei speechless.

“Wait. Wait, are you telling me you knew all along that Liying wanted Yibo?” Gu Wei asked, his anger now reaching its peak, but he kept his composure out of respect for his parents.

“That’s why we pushed so hard to send her abroad back then, to prevent the destruction of your relationship with Yibo. But you didn’t allow it because you didn’t want your sister far from you,” Lara explained further. Gu Wei laughed bitterly and sat down, his tears continuing to fall.

“Mom, if you had told me this was happening, I could’ve protected my family, and I wouldn’t have had to suffer for 16 years. I love my sister, but I love my husband and my child too,” Gu Wei said, taking a deep breath.

“Mom, who should I be angry with? My parents, for not telling me my sister wanted the man I love? My sister, for having me kidnapped to steal the life I built? Or my husband, who listened to my sister instead of me? Tell me, who should I seek revenge on?” Gu Wei shouted. He calmed himself down, stood up, and started walking toward the door, but before he could reach it, Katrina spoke.

“You’re still Yibo’s legal spouse because their marriage was never registered. If Yibo tries to file divorce papers, he’ll discover their marriage isn’t even valid. I’m just saying, if you want to go back to Yibo, there won’t be any legal obstacles,” Katrina explained. My son will die if you leave him for good" she thought.

Gu Wei turned to look at her. “I’m not going back to him. I’m marrying Lay. Xiao Zhan has been dead for a long time,” he said firmly, shifting his gaze toward his mother.

“Zhanzhan, I know we’ve made grave mistakes, and I know ‘sorry’ isn’t enough. But it breaks my heart to see my two children hurting each other, and I can’t do anything about it,” Lara said, her voice trembling as tears fell from her eyes. It hurt Gu Wei to see his mother in pain, but he didn’t show it.

“Don’t ask me to forgive everything Liying did to me without her paying for it, because I can’t grant you that. You have no idea what I went through at her hands,” Gu Wei said, before finally walking out of the house.

End of Flashback

Gu Wei ignored Liying’s reaction and turned his attention to the doctor. “Is he okay?” Gu Wei asked, his concern evident in his voice.

“Yes, he’s stable for now,” the doctor replied, and Gu Wei let out a sigh of relief. “Doctor, could I speak with you later? I just need to talk to this woman quickly. She escaped from a mental facility and has been saying all sorts of nonsense,” Gu Wei said. He knew that Yibo’s headache earlier wasn’t just an ordinary one, but because Yibo had hidden what happened to him for so long, Gu Wei understood that he hadn’t told anyone about it. He wasn’t about to let his crazy sister find out, either.

The doctor nodded. “Thank you,” Gu Wei said, and once the doctor left, Liying was still in shock, staring blankly.

“What are you still doing here? Do you want me to drag you out of this hospital? I’d be more than happy to do that,” Gu Wei said firmly. He had no intention of revealing who he really was in this manner, but what was the point of hiding anymore? He could make Liying pay for her actions as Xiao Zhan.

“You’ve lost your mind, haven’t you? Pretending to be Xiao Zhan just to provoke me,” Liying said after recovering from her shock.

“Your brain must really be broken. When I introduced myself as Gu Wei, you insisted I was Xiao Zhan. Now that I’m telling you the truth—that I am Xiao Zhan—you refuse to believe me,” Gu Wei said, and without hesitation, he slapped Liying hard enough to nearly knock her off balance.

“Maybe that’ll wake you up to the fact that not everything you believe is true,” Gu Wei said with a smirk.

“You slapped me?” Liying asked in disbelief, raising her hand to strike him back. But before she could touch him, Gu Wei grabbed her wrist, his grip firm. By now, other people in the hospital had started to notice them.

Just then, Gu Wei saw Jiyang’s name flash on the screen of his phone, and if he wasn’t mistaken, they had probably been listening to their conversation for a while now. “I don’t have my phone. I lost connection,” Gu Wei said, confusing Liying even more.

Elsewhere, when Haoxuan and Jiyang lost connection with Gu Wei, they began to worry, especially since the last thing they heard was from when he was still at the banquet. Checking Liying’s location, they realized something was wrong—she was too close to Gu Wei. They decided to call Liying, who immediately answered. Their concern deepened when they heard Liying mention that Yibo had been rushed to the hospital. Since Jiyang and Liying were friends, Jiyang asked her not to end the call, so they could keep an eye on her. Liying agreed, unaware that Jiyang and Haoxuan were actually using the call to monitor what was happening with Gu Wei, since they couldn’t reach him directly.

They were shocked when Gu Wei revealed his true identity, as this wasn’t part of the plan. Nevertheless, they decided to support him no matter what his next steps would be. When they heard Gu Wei’s comment, they exchanged glances, immediately understanding that the message was meant for them.

“Good thing he figured out we’re still on the line,” Haoxuan whispered.

"You’re the one losing your mind," Liying snapped, unaware that Haoxuan had already called the mental hospital. While Gu Wei held Liying's hand, he didn't notice her leaning closer until she suddenly bit him. Gu Wei grimaced in pain and shoved Liying, causing her to fall to the ground.

"I didn’t know you’ve leveled up from being a snake to becoming a dog," Gu Wei said, glancing at his reddened hand. A few moments later, psychiatric nurses arrived, surprising Liying as they restrained her. "What are you doing?" she demanded angrily, glaring at Gu Wei, who merely shrugged.

"Take her away. Look at my hand—she bit me," Gu Wei said, showing the nurses his injured hand.

"Gu Wei?" A man’s voice called from behind the nurses. Gu Wei was startled.

"Yubin?" Gu Wei smiled, recognizing the man. "I thought you were still in Canada." Gu Wei seemed to momentarily forget their surroundings as he spoke.

"I’m not crazy!" Liying protested, struggling against the nurse's grip. Just then, she felt the prick of a needle, and before she lost consciousness, Gu Wei leaned in close to whisper.

"I wonder what people will think when they see on the news that you were taken to a mental hospital for acting crazy?" he whispered with a smirk. Liying fought to keep her eyes open, but her eyelids grew heavier.

"If you tell anyone who I really am, do you think they’ll believe you after learning you were committed to a mental institution?" Gu Wei added, his voice low. "Go on, take her away. Her kind is waiting for her there. If you hadn’t followed me here, none of this would’ve happened to you," Gu Wei said, then turned to Yubin.

"She’s in your hands now," he said. Yubin nodded with a smile. "Thankfully, even without speaking much, Haoxuan and Jiyang already know what to do," Gu Wei muttered under his breath, watching as the nurses escorted Liying away.
