Kya: Chapter 1

20:53, 7 November 2022

The blue eyed girl took a deep breath before going down the stairs to join her family for dinner. It hadn't always been easy to be a highly ranked admiral's daughter. Families of higher ranks were important in the Fire Nation and not even one flaw should be known to the outside world.

That's one of the reasons why Kyaโ€™s life was even more difficult than it normally would have been. She was a walking flaw of her family. And no effort in behaviour or grades could make it up even the slightest bit.

Kya stood out in the Fire Nation, her looks made people wonder if she even was a Fire Nation citizen. With her striking blue eyes, tan skin and brown hair, it made it hard to believe that she wasn't from the Water Tribe.

How hard she tried to blend in, her looks made it impossible for her to ever reach official Fire Nation citizen status among her fellow citizens. She would always be mistaken for a refugee. And that was a huge problem for her family, especially her father.

The oldest daughter of the Fire Lord's right hand shouldn't have been so different. That's why her parents invested mostly everything into their younger daughter, Michi, who had been the perfect daughter, not only in her looks but also with her behaviour.

Kya didnโ€™t mind to be left alone but still she tried everything to get her parents' approval for once. It was not that she wasn't beautiful; she was but it wasn't right for the higher ups in the Fire Nation.

While Kya had to work hard for everything, her sister got everything without even trying. Still, she loved Michi dearly and vice versa. The youngest often tried to get her parents to see Kya in a different light but every time they looked at her and her blue eyes they were reminded of her difference.

The oldest daughter couldn't complain and had a rather normal childhood and life up to now. Despite being from a higher rank, Kya was down to earth and one of her best friends was a village girl named Ursa. Her parents didn't know about that as they wouldn't find it appropriate for her. They'd rather her being friends with people of their rank.

With her father being Fire Lord Azulon's right hand, the girl had always been around the Royal Palace which lead her to be friends with the two princes. Prince Iroh was her other best friend while Prince Ozai was more or less just someone she knew. Kya wasn't too close to him as he gave her a creepy and weird feeling. But it was very much gladly seen that she got along with both of them. That was probably one of the only points her parents were proud of her.

"Kya, you're late," her mother's strict voice snapped her out of her thoughts.

"I'm sorry, mother, father," Kya bowed quickly before sitting down beside her sister who shot her a warning look. Ignoring Michi, she turned to her plate and the family began dining in silence.

While the servants cleaned the table, her father cleared his throat, catching the whole family's attention. His sharp golden eyes, lingered on Kya for a bit longer before folding his arms on the table. "You will soon be of marriage age, Kya."

The girl's heart dropped and she shifted in her seat without saying anything.

"There will be a few families to join us for dinner in the next few weeks and I expect you to behave at your best."

Clearing her throat she nodded, "Yes father."

He hummed in approval and nodded before standing up and leaving to get some work done in his office.

"If you'll excuse me," Kya said and bowed her head at her mother before leaving the huge dining room. She rushed up the marble stairs to her bedroom and closed the door.

Not soon after, Michi entered the room as well. "You were writing a letter to him again, weren't you? That's why you were late."

Kya sat down and nodded. Letting out a sigh, her sister joined her. "I told you to write after everyone is asleep, someone's going to catch you one day."

Kya shook her head slightly before a small smile grew on her lips, "He proposed to me a few days ago."

Michi tensed and blinked her dark eyes at Kya. "He did what?!"

The brown-haired girl nodded and looked at her lap. She had met Hakoda last year in the slums in town when she was sneaking out. Her parents would have never allowed her to walk around town alone, let alone in slums, so she always sneaked out; that was also how she had met Ursa.

They more or less bumped into each other while Kya was trying to get back home as she was lost. Hakoda first had mistaken her as a water tribe refugee. But when she asked him how to get out of this city district, he knew that she wasn't by her way of talking as well as her elegant clothes she tried to hide behind her cloak.

However, that didn't stop him from falling in love with her ar first sight. Kya had also felt an immediate attraction to him and after talking to each other, he helped her to find her way back home. Ever since then the two of them had written letters to each other.

Kya didnโ€™t mind that he was from the Water Tribe, she loved Hakoda but she knew for sure her parents would never approve of him. After all he was the enemy and they would kill her if they knew that she had met up with him everytime he was in the Fire Nation. Due to the war the warriors often tried to invade parts of the Fire Nation.

The only one to know about her relationship was her sister. But to ensure her safety, Kya didnโ€™t tell her any names or where he came from. Michi just knew that she wrote letters and had met up with him a few times.

"And," her sister grabbed her arm, "Did you agree?"

"Shh," Kya said and swatted her sisters hand away. "I didn't say anything just now. I want to but that would mean I have to run away."

Her sister's dark eyes scanned her face before she looked away and let out a sigh. "I know you love him but you should really think this through Kya."

The tone in Michi's voice had Kya raise an eyebrow. "Do you know something I don't?"

Her sister looked up with teary eyes. "I heard father talk to Fire Lord Azulon."

That sentence was enough for Kya to hold her breath. She knew that nothing good would come out from this.

"Fire Lord Azulon had asked about you and whether you were already promised to anyone. And father told him that you weren't." Her sister sighed and shook her head. "Fire Lord Azulon suggested a marriage between you and Fire Prince Ozai."

Kya felt like someone had punched her in her face and gut. She jumped up quickly and ran a hand over her face. "Please don't tell me father-"

She stopped when her Michi nodded. "They will visit us and ask for your hand properly this weekend."

A heavy breath left Kyaโ€™s mouth and she plopped down beside her sister. Tears welled up in her eyes as she fiddle with her fingers. "I don't want to marry Ozai." She didn't understand why her father would leave out such an important detail and only said that there would be other guests as well when that was clearly a lie; he would make her marry the prince.

Michi put her hand on Kyaโ€™s leg and smiled sadly at her. "Sister, please think about this thoroughly. You could lead a great, happy and wealthy life. You wouldn't have to worry about anything if you agreed. And Ozai loves you a lot."

Kya knitted her eyebrows and shook her head. "I'm not going to marry that creep of a prince."

Her sister pressed her lips together. She stood up and dusted herself off. "It's your decision after all, but please don't do anything reckless." With that she left Kya alone in her room with her thoughts.

She would never agree to marry Fire Prince Ozai. Kya tolerated him but that was all she felt for him. With Hakoda in the picture she knew that she needed to take things into her own hands for once and stop looking for her parents's approval. If she didn't stop now, it would lead to her being unhappy in life.

Letting out a breath, she dusted herself off. Kya slapped her hands on her face one time. "Okay, I've got this."

-----

Letting out a groan, she crumpled up the letter once again. It was the fifth letter she wrote to Hakoda and had no idea how to formulate her sentences. When Kya came to a final decision a few days after the talk with her sister, she immediately sat down and started writing a letter to her lover.

She told him that she accepted the proposal but that she had to run away from the Fire Nation because her parents would never approve of their relationship. Kya suggested meeting up in Ba Sing Se as her parents would immediately send out someone to look for her.

Finally she had finished her letter but her happy moment was interrupted by a knock on her door.

"Kya, they're here," her sisterโ€™s voice came through the door.

Her stomach dropped and she gulped before standing up. "I'm coming!" Taking a deep breath, she got out of her room and made her way into the huge living room. All eyes turned to her as soon as she entered. She bowed respectfully. "Fire Lord Azulon, Fire Prince Ozai, welcome."ย  ย  ย  A/N - Hello guys!!!
