Chapter 3
08:54, 16 March 2017After dinner, there was a free period. Free period was an hour for the campers to do really what ever they wanted. They could play sports, read and other things of the sort. Kim changed into her pajamas and grabbed her diary from inside her pillowcase.
"Hey girl, come on!" Leslie yelled from the cabin porch.
Kim raced with her back to the main grounds, where a bunch of people were sitting around in groups doing various activities. She sat on the hill next to the rec hall and pulled the pen out from her diary.
"Dear diary,
Today, I met this dumb stupid head named Adam Ruzek. He was really mean to me. He laughed when a ball hit me in the face. I wanted to tell him he could shove that ball where the sun don't shine, but that wouldn't be nice. Although he is a big dumb stupid face, he's pretty cute too. And yeah, he can still go shove that ball where the sun don't shine cause that would be really funny.
-Kim"
"Whatcha writing there?" A voice walking towards her said. She quickly slammed the diary shut and put it in her daypack. After that, she turned around to see who the voice belonged to. It was Adam. She rolled her eyes.
"Nothing." She said through clenched teeth. He sat next to her.
"Hey sorry about laughing at you earlier, I just didn't want to be called a sissy in front of the guys. Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. You're still a jerk though."
They both laughed.
"Where are you from?" He asked.
"Chicago. What about you?"
"Same!"
She smiled at him. "Crazy place." She said.
"For sure."
He noticed the Chicago Police Department badge sticker on her diary.
"You want to be a cop?" He asked.
"Yeah, I do someday. My dad's a cop. What about you?"
"Mine's a detective. Hey who knows, maybe we'll be cop buddies one day."
"That would be fun." She turned back to her diary.
"Hey Adam! Why are you talking to HER?" A boy with dirty blonde hair said as he was coming towards them. He didn't look too pleased.
"Who are you?" Kim said as she scowled her glare.
"Kelly Severide. Who wants to know?" He scoffed.
"Well dang, I just asked what your name was. Do you walk around with a stick up your butt too?" She said without cracking the slightest smile. Right before Adam left with him, he turned back to her and smiled before heading to the soccer field. She kept staring in his direction, even after he left with a big dumb smile on her face. Leslie, Sylvie, Erin, Julie, Gabby, Antonio and Peter had seen the entire thing. They all erupted into a laughing fit.
"Adam and Kim sitting in a tree!" Julie started.
"K-I-S-S-I-N-G" Erin followed with.
"Shut up!" Kim yelled.
"Hey relax, girly. We're just joking around." Gabby said.
"He's a loser anyway." Erin said as she sat down next to Kim, picking at the grass.
"Don't act like you don't have a thing for Jay." Sylvie pointed out.
"Ew no." Erin said, shaking her head.
"Kelly's pretty cute, but I'm not into that." Leslie said, making fun of herself. Peter gave her a funny look.
"Peter Mills don't look at me in that tone of voice!" She told him.
"What?" He said as he was laughing.
"I don't even know, I heard Megan use it one time." She joked.
"Who's Megan?" Kim asked.
"My older sister. She's twelve." Leslie pointed her out on the stairs that lead into the mess hall. Mr. McHolland was walking towards them with another counselor.
"Hey kids, so how was your first day?" He asked them. They all had different reactions.
"Great, how was yours?" Julie asked.
"Great, thank you for asking."
"That's good."
"Kids, this is Mr. Voight. He's the assistant director of the camp."
The kids waved to him, frightened by his presence because he was tall and had a face you didn't want to mess with. They backed up a little. Erin looked at him like she had known him for years. After they walked away, Kim turned to her.
"What was that about?"
"Hank? He's a family friend. My mom got mixed in with some bad people and he helped her with the situation. I don't really think I should say anything more about it. But yeah, he's known me my entire ten years of life."
"I haven't even talked to the man and he already scares me."
"He's a cool guy. Just don't make him mad." Erin smiled.
Ms. Lopez and Ms. Danforth walked over to the girls.
"Alright ladies, free time is over in about ten minutes so you have one of two choices." Ms. Danforth began.
"What are the choices?" Julie asked.
"You guys can join the singalong inside the rec hall, or hit the hay early." Ms. Lopez told them.
"Hit the hay?" Sylvie raised an eyebrow.
"Go to bed." Leslie told her.
"I'll take that offer." She said, putting her sweatshirt on and picking up her flashlight. "Anyone else want to join?"
Kim, Erin, Leslie and Gabby followed her. It was after sunset, so it was pitch dark inside the cabin.
"I can't see!" Julie yelled, feeling her surroundings so she wouldn't bump into anything. Suddenly, the light flickered on.
"Holy crap that scared me!" Julie yelped. Gabby laughed.
"I thought you knew these cabins had lights?" Gabby said as she was digging through her bin for pajamas.
Erin let out a blood curdling scream when she climbed up to her bunk. The girls all ran over to see what had happened.
"Everything okay?" Sylvie stifled her laughter.
"Oh yeah, it's just that there's a HUGE FREAKING SPIDER ON MY BLANKET! GET IT OFF!" She screeched and bolted to the other side of the cabin, waving a stick around. Leslie picked it up.
"Hey there little guy." She picked the spider up in her hands and gently stroked it.
The other girls screamed and stepped back. She hopped down from the ladder and walked over to Erin. She then pretended to throw the spider at her.
"Cut the crap! JUST GET IT OUT OF HERE!"
She set the spider down on the porch and walked back inside.
"You guys are a bunch of pansies." She laughed as she got into bed.
