𝐓he air in the tunnel was thick with the smell of damp concrete and rust. Na-hee and Na-yeon ran until their lungs burned, their footsteps echoing against the dark, narrow walls. But as they rounded the final corner, they froze.
Na-yeon and Na-hee felt their steps faltering, instinctively walking backwards as the realization set in. There stood the others, waiting in the gloom. They saw Su-hyeok leaning against the corner of the concrete wall, looking at them with a dark, heavy gaze, while Wu-jin, Joon-yeong, and Gyeong-su stood beside him. They must have looped through the other tunnels to cut them off.
Just as the two tried to bolt back the way they came, they skidded to a halt. On-jo, Nam-ra, and Cheong-san stepped out from the shadows, blocking the path behind them. The trap was closed. Quickly, Na-yeon stepped forward, shielding Na-hee with her own body.
"Stay away from her!" Na-yeon hissed, her eyes darting between the two groups.
"Where where you two going?" Su-hyeok asked, his voice echoing with a strange, hollow distortion.
"It's a game!" Na-yeon shouted, her voice cracking. "We're inside a game, and you're all just keeping us trapped in this cycle!"
A heavy silence fell.
Na-yeon fumbled with the jagged knife she had been carrying, her knuckles white as she gripped the handle. She was ready to fight, ready to kill every one of them to get Na-hee out.
"What?" On-jo stated, her voice lowering into a flat, unnatural tone. She looked at her hands, then at Na-yeon, who was still shielding Na-hee. "What do you mean... we're inside a game?"
Su-hyeok pushed himself off the wall, his brow furrowed in a deep, confused scowl. "What do you mean?" he asked, his voice echoing in the hollow tunnel. He looked from Na-yeon to his friends, his gaze lingering on Wu-jin, Gyeong-su, and Joon-yeong. The three of them weren't looking at him, they were looking at each other, their faces grim and still, clearly knowing something the rest didn't.
Cheong-san stepped forward, his fists clenched at his sides. "You're lying!" he shouted at Na-yeon, his voice dripping with hatred and desperation. Beside him, Nam-ra didn't speak, she simply flickered her gaze between Na-yeon and Na-hee, her heightened senses picking up on the terrifying truth in their heartbeats
"It's true." Na-hee finally said, her voice small but steady.
The air in the tunnel seemed to turn into ice. Su-hyeok's hand, which had been reaching out for Na-hee, froze in mid air. "Na-hee, what are you saying?"
"Every time I die to a zombie, the system just drags us back to the start. Gyeong-su, Wu-jin, Joon-yeong... they remember because they've been killed off before. But you, me and the others... We have no memories what so ever." Na-hee whispered, as she clenched her fists.
On-jo let out a shaky breath, stumbling back against the damp concrete. "No... that can't be. My dad... the school... that was real."
"Wu-jin, Gyeong-su, Joon-yeong... did you know about this?" Nam-ra asked, her eyes narrowing as she studied the three of them.
"Yes, we knew. They're right." Joon-yeong admitted, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. He didn't look away, staring directly at Na-hee's terrified expression.
Cheong-san stepped toward him, his legs shaking so hard he nearly tripped. "It's... it's the truth?" he stammered, his voice cracking.
"That's impossible!" On-jo cried out, clutching her head as if it were about to split open.
"You've known this whole time?" Cheong-san's voice rose to a scream, his eyes darting between Gyeong-su, Wu-jin and Joon-yeong.
"I woke up in the classroom." Joon-yeong said, his voice dropping into a hollow, rhythmic monotone. "I was sitting at my desk, my pen in my hand. Every time I die, I remember it clearly."
"You're lying! You have to be lying!" Cheong-san lunged toward Joon-yeong, grabbing him by the collar and slamming him against the damp concrete. "My mom... I saw her turn!" Joon-yeong didn't even fight back. He just stared at Cheong-san with dead, exhausted eyes.
Cheong-san's face twisted with a pain so sharp it turned into pure anger. "answer me!" Cheong-san screamed. He pulled his fist back and punched Joon-yeong right in the face. The sound of the hit was loud in the quiet tunnel. Joon-yeong's head snapped to the side.
Before Cheong-san could hit Joon-yeong again, Su-hyeok jumped in. He grabbed Cheong-san's arm and pushed himself between the two boys, forcing them apart. "Cheong-san, stop! Stop it right now!" Su-hyeok yelled in frustration.
"Lee Cheong-san, stop it!" On-jo yelled out, her voice pleading and thick with tears. She stumbled forward, her hands reaching for his sleeve to pull him back from the fight.
Su-hyeok didn't let go of Cheong-san's shoulder, but he softened his grip. He looked over at Joon-yeong, who was still bleeding and staring at nothing.
"She's right." Su-hyeok said, his voice low and serious.
"This is no time to fight, Cheong-san." Wu-jin told them, his voice sharp and urgent. His eyes quickly glanced at Na-hee's scared expression, his gaze lingering on her with weird, obsessive focus." "We have Na-hee, that's all that matters." Gyeong-su and Joon-yeong nodded in agreement with Wu-jin, their faces cold and set.
On-jo looked at Wu-jin, completely bewildered. She couldn't believe what she was hearing, "are you serious right now?"
"You're all the same!" Na-yeon shouted, her eyes burning as she glared at every single one of them. She looked like she wanted to spit on the ground they stood on.
Gyeong-su let out a loud, bitter huff, "says the most selfish person here." he countered, his voice dripping with hate.
Na-yeon's gaze snapped to him, her face turning red with rage. "Oh really? And who's being selfish right now?" she argued, her knuckles turning white as her hands tightened on the jagged knife.
Na-hee leaned in, whispering to Na-yeon with a shaky, terrified voice. "Na-yeon, don't... he's just trying to get under your skin." Na-hee told her, her hand gently touching Na-yeon's arm to keep her from lunging forward.
Cheong-san stared toward the three of them again, his heart aching as the truth sank in like a physical weight. He looked at Gyeong-su, Wu-jin, and Joon-yeong, his eyes searching for even a hint of the friends he thought he knew. "Why didn't you tell us?"
"It's for Na-hee's protection!" Wu-jin yelled out, his voice cracking with a desperate, frantic energy. "If she gets bitten, we'll be reset again!"
Joon-yeong stood next to Wu-jin his lip still bleeding, "And it looks like this tunnel is the only place the script can't reach her." He added.
Na-yeon gritted her teeth, her eyes flashing with pure hatred, "You're not protecting her! You want to keep her for your selfish desires!"
"We're keeping her alive!" Gyeong-su barked, backing Wu-jin up. "In the real script, you were meant to die weren't you?! And Na-hee followed you, causing her death!"
The argument between the others risen, reached a deafening fever pitch. Su-hyeok and Cheong-san were screaming at the others, while Wu-jin and Gyeong-su yelled back, creating a chaotic situation.
Na-yeon saw the chance. "Now!" she whispered. She grabbed Na-hee's hand and they bolted. They ran into the deep, dark parts of the tunnel, hopeful for another opening.
"Na-hee, just keep running!" Na-yeon gasped. "Don't look at anything else! Just look forward!"
The two girls sprinted with everything they had, their lungs burning as the air grew thinner. Up ahead, the darkness of the tunnel finally began to break. A bright light. Flickered at the far end, an exit from the nightmare.
"There, Na-yeon, look!" Na-hee gasped, pointing at the light.
They were in an unfamiliar, broken city where the sky looked like a purple bruise. They didn't stop, they kept running, their feet pounding against the pavement.
A scream echoed behind them, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps. Na-hee felt her legs starting to give out, but she refused to slow down. Suddenly, a heavy rock whistled through the air and struck Na-yeon squarely on the side of the head. Na-yeon let out a sharp yelp, her hands flying to her temple as she stumbled.
"Na-yeon, shit!" Na-hee cried, catching her before she hit the ground.
She dragged Na-yeon into a narrow corner behind some rusted metal crates, just far enough away to hide from view. Na-hee's eyes widened as she saw the dark red blood matting Na-yeon's hair. "You're bleeding!"
"I'm fine." Na-yeon insisted, though her voice was dizzy. Na-hee quickly ripped a strip of fabric from her own shirt and wrapped it tightly around Na-yeon's head.
"What kind of lunatic throws a rock?" Na-hee muttered, her hands shaking.
"A desperate one." Na-yeon replied, her eyes focusing on the shadow stretching across the ground
"Found you."
Gwi-nam stepped into the light, a dark smirk twisting his face. He had found them. Na-hee looked at the two escape routes next to them. She knew what she had to do.
"Na-yeon, trust me " Na-hee whispered. Na-yeon shook her head, seeing the stubborn smirk on Na-hee's face. "Whatever you're planning, no."
But as Gwi-nam launched himself at them, Na-hee gave Na-yeon a gentle shove toward the right path. "Go!" she screamed. Na-hee bolted down the left path, making sure Gwi-nam saw her.
Na-yeon ran, the pain in her head making her move on instinct, not realizing until it was too late that Na-hee had led the monster away from her.
Na-hee's feet slapped against the cold, pavement as she sprinted down the narrow alleyway. She could hear Gwi-nam right behind her, his breathing heavy and his footsteps unnaturally fast. He wasn't even trying to hide his excitement, he was laughing, a sound that made her skin crawl.
Na-hee burst out of the alleyway, her heart hammering against her ribs. The city was a nightmare, she didn't know where to go, it was unfamiliar. Smoke and debris choked the air, making it hard to breathe. She let out a jagged cough, her eyes stinging as she squinted through the haze.
She just needed to keep Gwi-nam away. She just needed to lead him far enough so she could circle back and find Na-yeon.
"Shit, Na-hee!" Na-yeon's voice echoed from somewhere far behind. Despite the pain in her head, Na-yeon hadn't kept running away. Her stubbornness kicked in there was no way she was leaving Na-hee alone with that monster. She turned back, sprinting toward the cloud of smoke where she had seen them disappear.
Inside the debris, Na-hee heard a loud metal clanging. It sounded like Gwi-nam was knocking over trash cans, playing with her, closing in. She panicked, running faster through the grey fog.
Then, it happened.
Na-hee didn't see the sharp, rusted metal scrap sticking straight up from the debris. Her left foot came down hard.
A piercing scream ripped from her throat as the metal spike drove straight through her shoe and into her foot. She stumbled and crashed to the ground, the impact jarring her entire body. She stared down, her eyes wide and filling with hot tears.
Na-hee slammed her hand over her mouth, biting back another scream as the pain throbbed through her entire leg. She couldn't let Gwi-nam hear her.
Her vision blurred with tears of agony as she looked down at the rusted metal spike piercing her foot. Her hands were shaking so hard she could barely grip the scrap, but she knew if she didn't get free, it was game over.
Grip, Pull. Don't scream.
Slowly, she began to lift her foot. The sound of metal grinding against bone and tissue made her stomach churn. She let out a muffled, choked sob against her palm, her knuckles turning white as she fought the urge to pass out.
Na-hee gave one final, desperate yank.
With a sickening squelch, her foot came free. She collapsed back against the cold floor, gasping for air, her foot bleeding heavily onto the grey concrete. She was free from the metal, but she couldn't walk on her left foot.
Na-hee forced herself to stand, her face pale and drenched in cold sweat. Every time her right foot touched the ground, a sharp, hot flash of pain shot up her leg, making her stomach flip. She couldn't put any weight on it, so she began to limp, dragging her injured foot behind her as she moved through the thick smoke.
The world tilted and blurred as the blood loss from Na-hee's foot finally started to take its toll. Her head felt heavy, and her vision was swimming in shades of grey and purple. In her panic to escape Gwi-nam and save Na-yeon, she had forgotten the most basic rule of the game.
Zombies.
A low, growl ripped through the smoke behind her. Na-hee's heart stopped, but her body was too slow to react. Before she could even turn her head, a weight slammed into her back.
Na-hee shrieked as she hit the ground head first. The impact jarred her skull, She rolled onto her back, her hands instinctively flying up to catch the zombie by its throat.
The zombie's face was a nightmare of rotting, its jaw snapping frantically just inches from her nose. Na-hee let out a choked cry, her fingers slipping against the zombie's cold, slippery neck.
Na-hee let out a horrified scream. Just as her strength began to fail, a sharp crack echoed through the alley. A wooden stick slammed through the side of the zombie's head with a sickening crunch.
Before she could even gasp, Gwi-nam stepped into view, his face twisted in a look of pure, possessive rage. He kicked the corpse off her with a harsh, violent force, sending it skidding across the debris like a piece of trash.
Gwi-nam spat on the dead zombie, his face a mask of disgust, but as he turned back to Na-hee, his smirk completely vanished. His eyes went wide, and he froze, his body going stiff with a sudden, icy shock.
A bite mark.
On her left cheek, the skin was torn. A deep, jagged bite mark was already starting to turn a bruised, sickly purple.
Na-hee's hand moved slowly, her fingers trembling as she touched the warm, wet wound on her face. The reality of it hit her like a physical blow. She had survived the school, the resets, and the yandere obsession of her friends, only to be taken down by a random, zombie because she was too hurt to fight back.
"No..." Na-hee whispered, her voice breaking. She shook her head, tears finally spilling over. "No, not like this.."
"NO!" Gwi-nam roared, falling to his knees beside her. He grabbed her shoulders, his grip so tight it bruised, "I just got you back!"
"Na-hee!" Na-yeon's voice screamed from just a few feet away. She burst through the smoke, the jagged knife held high, but she froze when she saw Gwi-nam hovering over
Na-hee."Get away from her!" Na-yeon yelled, her voice shaking with terror and fury. Na-yeon halted frozen, the jagged knife trembling in her hand as the smoke cleared enough for her to see the dark, ugly bruise on Na-hee's cheek.
The terror that had fueled her scream vanished, replaced by a cold, realization that hit her harder than Gwi-nam's presence ever could. "Na-hee... your face..." Na-yeon whispered, her voice barely a breath, her knife clattering to the ground. "Na-hee... oh god, Na-hee..."
Na-hee looked at her hands. They were starting to pale. She knew that in a few minutes, she wouldn't be remember any of this.
Gwi-nam's face twisted into something barely human. He had spent countless resets chasing her, obsessed with the idea that she belonged only to him, "When I finally had you in the end, all of this effort were for nothing!?" He hissed.
The group burst through the thick smoke, their shoes crunching on the broken glass and concrete debris of the destroyed city. They stopped dead in their tracks, as they saw the scene in front of them.
Nam-ra stood perfectly still, her half bie senses screaming as she caught the scent of the virus already changing Na-hee's blood. She looked at Gwi-nam, her eyes turning cold and dangerous. "You let this happen." she said, her voice low.
Gwi-nam didn't even look up at them. He was still staring at the bite on Na-hee's face, his one good eye wide and twitching with a terrifying, angry grief.
Su-hyeok stared, his eyes wide with a mix of fury and pure shock. "What the hell did you do?!" he roared, his voice cracking as he saw Gwi-nam hovering over Na-hee.
On-jo was sobbing, her hands pressed against her mouth to stifle a scream. She looked at Na-hee's pale skin and the way her eyes were starting to lose their light to the bite mark on her cheek.
Cheong-san stood frozen, his face a mask of shock and grief. He looked at the scene, the monster holding the girl he loved, and felt a hollow emptiness in his chest. "This is what you wanted?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper directed at Gwi-nam.
"You chased her until she had nowhere to go, and now she's dying because of you. You didn't win, Gwi-nam. You lost everything." Wu-jin, Gyeong-su and Joon-yeong stood in a line, looking like they had been hit by a truck.
Na-yeon knelt beside Na-hee was, with the blood stained bandage around her head. She looked at Na-hee and then at Gwi-nam, her eyes full of a fierce, protective fire even through her exhaustion. "You won't have her." Na-yeon hissed at Gwi-nam. She turned to the others.
"I'll make sure every resets, every repeat. She won't be yours." Na-yeon vowed, her hand clenched into a fist as her other hand held onto Na-hee, "Even if it takes a million years."
Na-yeon ignored Gwi-nam's grip and pulled Na-hee's head gently onto her lap, her hands shaking as she brushed the hair away from Na-hee's pale, sweating forehead.
Na-hee looked up at Na-yeon, for a tiny second, the girl Na-yeon loved was still there. She reached up with a weak hand, her fingers grazing the bloody bandage she had tied around Na-yeon's head earlier. A small, sad smile touched Na-hee's lips.
"We never made it, did we?"
Na-yeon let out a jagged, broken sob, her tears falling fast and hot onto Na-hee's cheeks. "No... no, don't say that. We're gonna escape. I promise."
"It's okay." Na-hee breathed, her eyes starting to flutter as the infection pulled her deeper into the dark. "At least... I'm not alone."
Su-hyeok and Cheong-san stood over them, their shadows long and heavy on the debris. Su-hyeok turned his head away, unable to look anymore, his shoulders shaking as he wept silently.
"I'm sorry, Na-yeon." Na-hee whispered, her hand finally slipping from Na-yeon's face and hitting the concrete with a dull thud. "I'm so... tired.."

"Hello everyone, my name is Kim Na-hee. I hope we can all get along well" she greeted, bowing slightly while her hand rested on the strap of her bag, a mix of excitement and nervousness swirling within her.
The classroom was filled with a reassuring warmth that made Na-hee feel instantly welcome. Dae-su leaned closer to Wu-jin and whispered, "Our new classmate is coming today? I didn't know!"
"Yeah, I didn't know either." Wu-jin answered as he played with the pen in his hand. He stopped the pen mid spin, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Na-hee. For a split second, a flash of static crossed his vision, a memory of a dark tunnel and a jagged knife but it vanished as quickly as it came.
Gyeong-su and Joon-yeong sat nearby, their bodies stiffening instinctively as Na-hee spoke. They exchanged a quick, heavy look.
Na-hee walked down the aisle, her shoes clicking softly on the floor. She felt a strange shiver crawl up her spine, like someone had just walked over her grave. She smiled at the teacher and moved toward the only empty desk, right next to Lee Su-hyeok.
Su-hyeok looked up at her, and for a second, his cool, confident mask slipped. He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest, a feeling of loss so deep he couldn't explain it. He opened his mouth to say hello, but the words felt stuck in his throat.
"Nice to meet you." Na-hee whispered as she sat down, her voice sweet and untouched by the screams of the previous loop.
Su-hyeok leaned back in his chair, his eyes searching Na-hee's face with a strange, lingering intensity. He looked like he was trying to solve a puzzle that didn't have all the pieces yet.
"Have we met before?" he asked, his voice low and genuinely curious.
Na-hee blinked, a small, confused smile on her lips. "I don't think so. I just moved here today. Why?"
Su-hyeok rubbed the back of his neck, looking frustrated. "I don't know. It's just... when you walked in, I felt like I was supposed to run to you or something. Weird, right?"
Cheong-san couldn't take his eyes off the new student, feeling a strange, powerful pull toward Na-hee that he couldn't explain.
"It feels...different." Nam-ra breathed out, her eyes narrowing as she looked at her seatmate. She watched Na-hee effortlessly holding Su-hyeok's attention, feeling that seat belonged to someone else.
Meanwhile, On-jo sat frozen with her hands pressed to the table, her heart dropping into her stomach as a wave of dread washed over her, leaving her to wonder why the mere sight of the new girl felt life changing.
Na-yeon stopped mid sentence while gossiping. The sharp, judgmental comments she usually threw out died in her throat. The new girl felt... familiar to her, a close familiarity Na-yeon couldn't quite place, but whatever it is, she'll figure it out.
[ACHIEVEMENT]: A New Beginning.
