Lucy and Stiles made eye contact, brown eyes meeting each other as Peter let go of her. Lucy's knees hit the ground, followed by her torso. Her eyes fluttered shut as her head hit the ground. Lucy Evans' body, with blood on her neck and arm, laid next to Lydia Martin's, whose entire body was coated with blood.
The brunette, Lucy Evans, who had only been in the hospital for a few days, had woken up only a few hours after she had been brought in. Her room hadn't been close to Lydia Martin's, the strawberry blonde who had been brought in with her. Both of the girls had the same bite mark on them and their story was that an animal had attacked them. Jackson Whittemore, who had brought them both in, confirmed their story.
Lydia was still slowly healing, but she was awake now. Lucy had woken up quickly, startled to find Melissa inspecting the bite on her shoulder. Her mother had been worried sick, expecting her daughter to be having fun at the Beacon Hills Winter Formal. Hearing that her adoptive daughter had been attacked by an animal outside the school was not what she had expected that night.
When Stiles and Scott reached the hospital, they had crowded around Lucy, worried sick about the girl. The bite had been no normal bite. It was a werewolf bite and the trio had expected Lucy to wolf-out at any point. But she never did. She never grew fangs, or claws, and her eyes never glowed. The bite was healing and it was leaving nothing but a scar behind.
None of them, not even Derek, could explain what was happening to the girl. But after making sure she wasn't dying, Stiles and Scott filled her in on everything.
Peter Hale was dead. Lucy could rest easily now.
Allison knew the truth about everything. She had wanted to be angry at Lucy for lying to her, but Allison could only be happy that her best friend was still alive.
Chris Argent knew about Scott. But he was letting him go with a strict warning to stay away from Allison.
Kate Argent, Allison's aunt that Lucy had never met, was also dead. Lucy had comforted Allison but couldn't find it in her heart to feel sympathy for the dead woman.
Even though Lucy was no longer a current patient at the hospital, she had never left. She was currently sitting in the waiting room, reading a book while Stiles slept next to her. Well, his legs were on her lap as he laid on his back. Lucy wasn't quite sure how he was comfortable, but she never complained about his legs.ย
As she tried to focus on her book while Lydia was in the shower, she could only think back to the night of the dance. Not just Peter, she had actually been trying to avoid thinking about him. The thing she couldn't escape from was Stiles himself. More specifically, their dance. Her heart pounded in her chest and her stomach did a somersault every time she thought about it. They were having a moment, were they not? Or was it all in her head? Perhaps Stiles was only dancing with a close friend while Lucy had been dancing with her crush.
When someone walked past Stiles, the boy woke with a startle.ย
"Morning, sleeping beauty." Lucy joked, flipping the page she had finally finished reading.
"Ha ha." Stiles laughed dryly, moving his legs to place his feet on the floor. "Is she okay?" He asked, referring to Lydia. She had been his crush since the third grade and had also been his date to the dance, inevitably leaving him alone for Jackson.
"She's fine," Lucy reassured. "She's just in the shower."
Stiles nodded, rooting in his pocket for some spare change. Once he pulled out some coins, he looked back at Lucy. She was focused on her book, which Stiles assumed was a murder mystery based off the cover. Not that he was judging the book based off its cover or anything, but he did find it a little ironic to be reading that after what had happened. He kept his eyes on her for just a moment, watching as she tucked a strand of dark brown hair behind her ears before gently turning the page. The loose strand fell forward again, and Stiles almost reached forward to move it for her. Instead, he watched as she tucked it behind her ear again, wondering why she didn't use the hair tie on her wrist to keep it back. He noticed the obvious, that her hair was fairly long, and it was a deep shade of brown, just like dark chocolate.
His stomach growled, a reminder to stop staring.ย
"Want anything?" Stiles asked, nodding towards the vending machine down the hall.
"No, thank you." Lucy smiled politely, her light brown eyes meeting his. Stiles smiled back, jumping to his feet and walking away.
Lucy's attention went back to her book as she tried to keep the Stilinski boy far from her mind. He may be single, but she knew his heart yearned for Lydia.ย
Only a few minutes went by before a deafening scream came from inside Lydia's room. Lucy slammed her book shut and jumped to her feet, running into the room. She was followed by Stiles and Lydia's nurse, who went straight to her bathroom.
"Lydia!" Stiles shouted, peering out the open window. As the nurse shut the water off, Lucy looked around. Besides the group and a damp hospital gown crumpled on the floor, the room was empty.
Slowly, Lucy knelt down and picked it up, holding it carefully. A shiver ran down her spine as Lucy knew in her gut that her friend was in trouble.
"This is the one she was just wearing?" Scott asked from the passenger seat of the jeep. Stiles and Lucy nodded, the girl sitting in the back seat while Stiles was in the driver's seat. Scott turned to face her sister. "I'm not gonna let anyone hurt her. Or you. Not again." Lucy could only nod again.ย
"All right, just shove the thing in your face and let's find her." Stiles snapped, drumming the steering wheel with his palms. Just as he was about to go, Allison knocked sharply on the window.
"What are you doing here? Someone's gonna see us." Scott reminded her as Stiles rolled the window down.
"I don't care. She's my friend and we need to find her before they do." Allison remarked, referring to her parents.
"I can find her before the cops can." Scott sniffed the gown Lucy had given him.
"How about before my father does?" Stiles sassed, unlocking the doors for Allison. She jumped in the back after looking for any wandering eyes and they drove off.
Scott's senses, his werewolf abilities, led them straight to the Hale house. Allison and the boys jumped out of the jeep quickly, but Lucy was a step behind. She could almost feel his presence.ย
She shivered, wrapping her arms around herself as she walked closer. Stiles, who noticed her falling behind, stopped and waited for her to catch up.
"You okay?" He asked, wrapping an arm around her as they walked behind Sott and Allison. His touch comforted her, bringing her back to reality. Peter Hale was dead, she reminded herself.
Smiling tightly at Stiles, she nodded. "I'm okay."
"Has Lydia ever even been here?" Stiles asked the group as they stood in the trees near the house.
"Not with me. Maybe she came here on instinct like she was looking for Derek." Allison cast a glance at Lucy, who had also been bitten by a werewolf. "Wolves need a pack, right? Maybe that's why she was looking for Derek. Would she have been drawn to an Alpha? Is it an instinct to be part of a pack?"
"Yeah, we're stronger in packs. Like, literally stronger, faster, better in every way." Scott explained, also glancing towards his sister.
"I never took her here either." Lucy added, catching the couple's glances. She stayed close to Stiles who still had his arm around her. "I've also not had the urge to look for a pack."
Allison hummed in response. "Maybe it's because of Scott? I mean he's your brother, maybe it's because you're already comfortable with him."
"Two wolves aren't a pack." Stiles reminded everyone.
"Right. But if she's already comfortable and familiar with Scott, maybe she doesn't need a pack. Maybe they're just two lone wolves?"
"Omegas." Lucy whispered, catching everyone's attention. "I read about them, the night I found out. I read a lot, anything I could get my hands on."
"I guess that all makes sense," Scott said. "It's the best explanation for everything."
Everyone nodded in agreement as Scott started to walk closer to the house. The idea of being a werewolf didn't sit right with Lucy. It didn't seem like it was true or even real. Like it wasn't the correct answer on an exam. But how could she explain that feeling, when everyone had already decided she was one? That she had to be one?
The sound of her brother's cry for help pulled her away from her thoughts. She looked up from the ground to see her brother hanging upside down from a tree. Allison and Stiles were kneeling next to a tripwire, which was in Stiles' hands. Lucy frowned; she hadn't even felt him leave her side.
"Next time you see a tripwire, don't trip it." Scott deadpanned. Stiles and Allison laughed it off as Lucy walked up to the group. She gently tapped Stiles' shoulder, prompting the boy to turn around.
"Is it okay if I wait in your car?" She asked quietly, pulling on her sleeves.
"Yeah." Stiles fumbled for the keys before remembering it was unlocked. "Are you sure though? We won't be able to see each other if something happens."
Lucy looked over her shoulder, barely seeing the jeep from where Stiles had parked. "Yeah." She breathed out. "Yeah, I'm sure."
"Okay." Stiles nodded. "Yeah, go ahead. You can start it if you need to and we'll be back soon."
"Thank you." Lucy gave him a small smile before she turned away, eager to get away from the Hale house. She quickly made it to the jeep, her feet moving much faster than they had earlier. She opened the door and slide into the back, wanting to hide away from everything.ย
"I never ate anyone's liver," Scott smirked, referring to the one that had been taken the night before from the cemetery. Most likely by Lydia.
"Did you even have the urge to? Because I don't." Lucy added, hoping her friends would come to the same conclusion she had. Lucy wasn't a werewolf. She wasn't going to be one because she would've wolfed out by now. But she hadn't and yet her friends were still keeping a close eye on her.
"Scott, you're a real model of self-control when it comes to werewolves.ย You definitely would've eaten my liver on a full moon. If anything, you're the test case for this, so we should be going over what happened to you." Stiles sassed. Lucy sighed quietly, knowing they wouldn't believe her no matter what she said.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean like what was going through your mind when you were turning, you know? What were you drawn to?" Stiles asked as the trio walked into the school building.
"Allison."
"Okay, so your crush and girlfriend." Stiles whipped around to face Lucy. "Who's your crush?"
Lucy scoffed, her cheeks getting warm. "I don't have one."
Scott raised his eyebrows. "Oh! That's a lie, who is it?"
"No one!" Lucy seethed at her brother. "Now drop it."
"Okay, nothing else? Seriously?" Stiles asked, dropping the conversation about Lucy's crush. Of course he wanted to know who, but he didn't want to pry. Not until it became absolutely necessary.
"Nothing else mattered. But, no, that's good, though, right? Because she was with you two that night." Scott added.
"She was also with Jackson at the beginning. And then she went looking for him." Lucy reminded them. Which ended up being a bad idea, because both boys turned to her slowly.
"So, the guy she loves? Luce, come on, we gotta know who your crush is."
"Scott, I'm serious. Drop it. If I was going to turn, I would've by now. Things started happening to you literally the day after. Nothing has happened to me, okay? Nothing!" Lucy threw her hands up. "I don't know what you want me to say. I'm human."
"Your emotions are heightened." Stiles said, referring to not only her anger but also her fear at the Hale house.
"Has it ever occurred to you, that something really frightening and traumatizing happened to me? My 'heightened emotions' are normal."
"Sorry." Stiles spoke softly. The anger vanished from Lucy in an instant at the vulnerability in his tone.
"I'm sorry, I'm just stressed, and I shouldn't have taken it out on you guys. But I know I'm not one of you."
"But the bite either turns you or kills you." Scott furrowed his eyebrows. "It has to do one."
"Maybe you're just a late bloomer? I mean you can't be immune to the bite, can you?"
Lucy shook her head. They didn't believe her. "I don't know. I'm late for class."
