Lucy never wanted the moment to end. Stiles had his hands on her waist and hers were on his shoulders. The slow song was coming to an end, only for the next one to be a slow song too. Scott and Allison swayed together, not too far from the Evans girl and Stilinski boy.
Everything was perfect. Lucy had absolutely no idea what song was playing, but to her it was just background noise. Her brother and her best friend were together again, happily she might add. And she was here, slow dancing with her crush. Even though his feelings were elsewhere, she chose to ignore it. She just wanted to be happy and live in the moment.
She would never, ever forget this moment. The first time she danced with a boy. Stiles was right, she realized. She couldn't wait to tell her grandkids about how she felt right now. But she needed to be in the moment, she realized.
"Stiles?" She asked, looking up at him. He hummed in response, tearing his eyes from the crowd to look at her. "Why didn't you stop Lydia? She was your date, wasn't she?"
Stiles looked away for a moment, before looking back at the girl he was dancing with. "She did ask me to go with her, but I know it was just a pity date. Scott told Allison and Allison told Lydia how I felt. But it's clear that she's still in love with Jackson. So, who am I to stop her?"
Lucy nodded. "That's not easy to do. I hope you know how strong, and brave, you are for doing that."
Stiles' solemn expression turned bright when he broke into a grin. "You think I'm strong and brave?"
Lucy threw her head back and groaned, before laughing and smacking his chest. "Shut up. You know what I mean."
"Speaking from experience?"
"No-" Lucy hesitated, knowing damn well she was lying. "I'm not."
Before Stiles could reply, Lydia ran past them in tears. Lucy looked back towards the direction her friend was running from, seeing no sign of Jackson.
"Go." Stiles said. "Go after her."
Lucy frowned. "Wouldn't you rather go...?"
He smiled sadly. "I've had a crush on her since the third grade. She's never noticed me and probably never will. You've been her best friend since middle school. She trusts you and right now... it looks like she needs you. So go."
Lucy nodded, stepping back from Stiles. "Thank you. I'll be back."
Stiles smiled, a real, genuine, happy smile. "And I'll be waiting."
Lucy turned and nearly ran out of the school. She caught up with Lydia outside, calling her name until the strawberry blonde turned around.
"What do you want, Lucy?" Lydia gasped, hugging herself.
"I came to check on you. You're my best friend and I want to make sure you're okay." Lucy stepped forward, gently wiping the tears from her friend's cheeks. Lydia reached forward and pulled Lucy into a tight hug, crying into her shoulder. "Hey..." Lucy whispered, rubbing Lydia's back gently. "What happened?"
"It's Jackson." Lydia's voice broke. "I can't find him."
Lucy pulled back, smiling softly at her friend. "Then we'll look together."
Walking onto the field, Lydia and Lucy searched for Jackson. They stopped in the center of the Lacrosse field, looking for the co-captain.
"I don't think he's here, Lyds. Let's check the parking lot, look for his car." Lucy suggested, grabbing her friend's hand. But Lydia didn't budge, looking into the fog between the stands.
The overhead lights turned on, causing the pair to jump and squint their eyes. "Jackson?"
"Jackson, is that you?" Lydia called out to a dark figure who appeared from the fog she had been staring into. Lucy recognized the man almost instantly. Peter Hale was walking towards them. With Lydia frozen and a fast werewolf getting closer, Lucy didn't know what to do besides trying to reason with him.
"Peter!" She called out. "Leave her alone, please! Don't hurt her. You can do whatever you want with me but leave her out of this!" Lucy begged, standing in front of her friend protectively.
"An interesting offer." Peter smirked as he spoke slowly, turning to look at Stiles, who was running onto the field.
"LUCY! LYDIA! RUN!" He screamed, causing Peter to lurch forward and toss Lucy to the side. He wasted no time in jumping on Lydia and attacking her. Lucy jumped back up and alongside Stiles, tackled Peter and pushed him away from Lydia.
Lucy looked back at her friend, who was lying in a patch of bloody grass. She ran to her, kneeling at her side as she desperately tried to apply pressure to Lydia's wounds.
"Don't kill her. Please." Stiles begged, crouching down next to Lucy.
"Of course not." Peter stood back up. "Just tell me how to find Derek."
"Where is he?" Lucy mumbled, racking her brain. Right. The Argents had him somewhere. They should've listened to Scott and went after him.
"Tell me how to find Derek Hale." Peter ordered, glaring down at the teens.
"I don't know that. How would I know that?" Stiles asked, helping apply pressure to Lydia's wounds.
"Because you're the clever one, aren't you? And because deception has a particularly acrid scent, Stiles." Peter paused. "I think I'll have to take you up on that offer, Lucy. Stiles, tell me the truth or-" Peter reached down, grabbing Lucy by the strap of her dress and holding his claws to her throat. "-I will rip her apart. And then I'll rip the red head too. Leave their bloody bodies on your doorstep."
"Look, I don't know, okay? I- I swear to god, I have no idea." Stiles rambled, slowly taking a step towards the alpha. Peter's response was to press his claws into Lucy's throat, beginning to draw blood. Lucy winced, staring into Stiles' eyes. She didn't want to die like this. "Okay, okay, okay, look, I- I think he knew. Derek, I think he- I think he knew he was gonna be caught."
"By the Argents?"
"Yeah." Stiles nodded, tearing his eyes from Lucy to look at Peter. "When they were shot at, he and Scott- I think he took Scott's phone. Because they all have GPS now. So, if he still has it and if it's still on, you can find him."
"Hm." Peter hummed. "That's useful. I knew you would be useful, Stiles. You, Lucy McCall, was it? Not so much."
"Evans." Lucy choked.
Peter raised his eyebrows, chuckling. "Wow, you never changed your last name? Melissa must feel like such a terrible mom. And how much of a failure do you have to be to make your adopted kid not want to change their last name?"
"Shut up." Lucy hissed, elbowing his diaphragm. The alpha didn't even flinch, choosing to laugh instead.
"Oh, that was precious. It really was. I'm an alpha, what's so special about you? Nothing." Peter hissed, his fangs growing. "You're nothing but a simple little human girl. For now."
Stiles watched helplessly as Peter slid Lucy's dress strap down her arm, revealing her bare shoulder. Before anyone could move to stop him, Peter sunk his fangs into Lucy's skin, letting the venom enter her body. Lucy gasped, the pain almost unbearable.
Lucy and Stiles made eye contact, brown eyes meeting each other as Peter let go of her. Lucy's knees hit the ground, followed by her torso. Her eyes fluttered shut as her head hit the ground. Lucy Evans' body, with blood on her neck and arm, laid next to Lydia Martin's, whose entire body was coated with blood.
