Melissa had another late shift and to no surprise, Scott wasn't home either. All by herself for dinner, Lucy decided to throw on a rom-com and make boxed mac-n-cheese.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before played from the living room, the TV angled so the teen could see it from the kitchen. Lucy stirred in the milk, butter, cheese powder, and a pinch of salt in the pan.
There was nothing like a good self-care night, but Lucy couldn't find it in her heart to be completely happy. Her brother was becoming a different person. She knew he was a high school boy, probably doing high school boy things with Stiles, but she wanted her brother back.
And knowing that he had been with Derek Hale only concerned her. She had a bad feeling about him and after seeing the drawing in Allison's book, Lucy decided it was time to trust her bad feelings.
She had dreamed about Derek last night; a man she knew nothing about. They were in the vet's office, where Scott worked. Derek was bleeding and Lucy was holding a bone-saw. He had instructed her to cut off his arm, the bleeding one. And she had done it.
It was one of the most disturbing dreams she had ever had. Although, the one that actually came true might be a little more disturbing.
What was she supposed to do about it? They hadn't caught the killer, but going to the Sheriff's department and claiming that she had a dream where she killed the bus driver would only make her a suspect. So, the answer, was nothing. Lucy couldn't do anything but ignore her dream and move on. After all, it was just a messed-up coincidence.
Lucy put some of the cheesy pasta into a bowl and moved into the living room, putting the TV back into its original position.
She smiled softly as she took the first bite, watching as Lara Jean kissed Peter on the track. If only she could find her real-life Peter Kavinsky.
Watching the rom-com brought some peace to her. It kept her from her thoughts and allowed Lucy to enjoy her night. When her bowl was empty, she got up to wash it. After she dried it, she put the leftovers in the fridge for Melissa to have when she got home.
In the living room, Lucy's phone beeped. Assuming it was just Allison or Lydia, she finished cleaning the counter before she went to check it.
Picking up her phone, she stared at the notification confused.
Unknown number
Meet me at the school asap. - Scott
Oh. That's right. Scott broke his phone.
If Lucy had been thinking clearly, she wouldn't have gone to the school that night. But she wasn't thinking clearly. Sure, she had two great friends and a wonderful mother, but she wanted her brother back.
So, when he asked her to meet him at the school, she went.
When she got to the school, Lucy was surprised to see Lydia and Jackson parked outside. She shut her car off, going up to the driver's window of Jackson's car and knocking.
"Hey. What are you guys doing here so late?" She asked when the window rolled down. She rubbed her bare arms as a cold breeze went by. In her hurry to meet with Scott, she had forgotten her jacket and left the house in only her over-sized tee and sweatpants.
"We brought Allison here. Scott asked her to meet him inside." Lydia leaned over, smiling tightly at her friend.
Lucy frowned. "He messaged me that too."
"It looks like he broke in." Jackson nodded to the door being held open by a tool. "This whole thing seems weird."
"Yeah..." Lucy trailed off. Now that she was here, the whole thing did seem weird. "How long has Allison been in there?"
"Long enough. I'm getting her." Jackson opened his door and jumped out. Lucy took a step back, looking at Lydia who seemed like she had just gotten slapped across the face.
"Uh, we'll go with you." Lucy offered as Lydia slowly stepped out of the car.
"I can take care of myself." Jackson grunted.
Lucy rolled her eyes. "I'm sure you can, but if my brother is in there then I'm going. And I want to make sure Allison is okay."
"And you're not leaving us out here in the dark!" Lydia added, grabbing Lucy's arm as they followed Jackson up the steps.
"Whatever. Just don't fall behind."
Lucy and Lydia listened carefully, staying closely behind Jackson as they walked through the school. The girls linked their arms, glancing around as shivers went down their spines. During the day, the school was full of life and stressed teens. But at night, it was dark and empty. The school was eerily quiet until they got closer to the lobby.
Hearing voices, Jackson pushed open the doors. The girls followed, right on his tail as they entered the spacious room.
Lucy sighed in relief when she saw Allison talking with Scott and Stiles.
"Why is everyone here?" Stiles groaned, running his hands along his buzzed hair.
"Jackson and Lydia drove me here." Allison said, glancing back at Lucy with a confused look.
"Scott asked me to meet him here." Lucy replied, showing the boys the message.
"Luce." Scott started, staring at his sister with a look one could only describe as fear. "I didn't send that. Or the one Allison got."
Lucy pursed her lips. "Well, someone did. Who obviously knew you were here." She gestured to the room around them.
"Can we please just leave now?" Lydia begged, huddling against her boyfriend.
Before anyone had a chance to reply, a thud from above them echoed through the room. Scott grabbed Allison and Lucy's arms, pulling them closer. The ceiling groaned, as if something big was on the floor above them.
"Run!" Scott shouted, just as the ceiling caved. He pulled the girls with him as Jackson grabbed Lydia. Stiles stayed a step behind, pushing everyone up the stairs as something growled from the place they were just in. Lucy's blood ran cold as she recognized the sound. It was here.
Everyone ran down the hall towards the room at the end. Rushing through the door, everyone began barricading the doors. It felt like Lucy wasn't in control of her own body anymore as she stacked the chairs with the group. Her fight or flight mode had kicked in, making her feel as though she was having an out-of-body experience.
Lucy could barely hear Stiles, who was standing in the middle of the room. "Guys- can we just wait a second? You guys, listen to me, can we wait a second? Guys? Stiles talking. Can we hang on one second, please?" As a last resort, the Stilinski boy screamed. "GUYS!"
Lucy froze, as did everyone else as they turned to face Stiles.
"Okay, nice work. Really beautiful job, everyone." He began sarcastically. "Now, what should we do about the twenty-foot wall of windows?" He gestured to the opposite wall, where there was nearly twenty-feet of window.
Ignoring him, Allison turned to Scott. "Can somebody please explain to me what's going on, because I'm freaking out here. And I would like to know why." When she didn't get an answer, she started to breath heavy.
"That-" Lucy started, gasping for air as she looked to Stiles. "That thing... whatever it was or is, is the monster that attacked us in the store."
Stiles only looked at her, giving her no reaction. Like he didn't care. Or already knew. Lucy couldn't figure out which one.
"Why... why don't you care?" She whispered, her bottom lip trembling as tears pooled in her eyes. "Why don't you care!" She screamed, letting the tears fall.
Jackson slowly walked up to her, resting a hand slowly on her trembling shoulders. "What do you mean?" He spoke slowly in a low tone. "What do you mean that is the same thing that attacked us?"
"The growl. It was the same." She wiped her tears, looking Allison dead in the eye. "And I think it looked like the thing from your book."
Lydia nodded in agreement, welcoming a hug from Jackson when he walked back over to her.
"No-" Stiles licked his lips. "A mountain lion attacked you. It wasn't a creature from a book."
"You don't believe me?" Lucy looked at everyone, seeing the concerned looks in their eyes. She took a step back, then another. "I'm not crazy. I'm not crazy!" Her back hit the wall, and she slid to the floor, hugging herself tightly as she sobbed.
"Somebody killed the janitor." Scott said solemnly, leaning against a table. Lydia gasped and Lucy lifted her head.
Stiles nodded. "Yeah, the janitor's dead."
"What are you talking about? Is this a joke?" Allison scoffed, sparing another glance at her brunette friend.
"What, who killed him?" Jackson spat, keeping an arm around Lydia, who began rambling.
"No, no, no, no. This was supposed to be over. The mountain lion, which was probably just dirty and that's what made it look like the image in the book, killed-"
"No, don't you get it? There wasn't a mountain lion." Jackson butted in, cutting off Lydia's hysterical rambling.
"But the lion is dead. Mr. Argent shot it. Whatever was in the store-" Lucy swallowed her nerves, "It's in here with us."
"No! This is supposed to be over!" Lydia screeched at her friend, still in denial.
"Scott?" Lucy's voice broke as she looked at her brother.
"Who was it? What does he want? What's happening?" Allison cried. "Scott?"
"All I know is, if we go out there, he's gonna kill us." Scott spoke.
"Us? He's gonna kill us?" Lydia stuttered, looking between Scott and Stiles. "Who? Who is it?"
"The same man from the store. The one who thinks he's an animal." Stiles began, hoping his excuse would be enough to keep Lucy from continuing with her theory. Even if it was right, she and the others couldn't know that.
"It's Derek. It's Derek Hale." Scott announced. "It's Derek."
