Third-person pov

Beautiful white sow covered the ground as the sun shined brightly.

Rose made her way downstairs after getting ready. There she saw Diana, Anne, and Ruby giggle.

They were making some sort of pastry.

"Oh hello everyone!" Rose smiled and everyone turned their heads.

"Hello, Rose! Would you help us make a pie for Gilbert?" Diana asked returning a smile.

Ruby however didn't look very happy. Rose felt her glares at the back of her head.

"I can't. Actually, I'm heading there right now," she said putting a scarf around her neck.

They heard footsteps coming down the stairs.

"Well, I better be off now," she said the smile leaving her face the second she stepped through the front door.

She acted like she was happy in front of the girls, but she was so nervous inside she was so nervous.

What if Gilbert was mad at her? What if he didn't want to be friends anymore because he thought she was annoying?

She kept wondering as she made her way to the Blythe's house.

The house came to view and her nervousness grew.

She reached the front door.

Rose raised her hand to knock and softly tapped the wood door.

"Coming!" she heard a voice yell from inside.

The door opened and Gilbert stood there.

They stared at each other for a few seconds then Rose began to speak.

"Gilbert, I am so sorry if I upset you the other da-"

"Woah slow down Rose. I should be the one apologizing" Gilbert cut her off.

"Come inside," he said gesturing her inside.

They sat at a coffee table both silent.

"Look Rose, I didn't mean to yell at you the other day. It was just I was stressed and sad about the funeral" Gilbert began to explain.

"Do you think I'm annoying?" Rose asked looking straight into his eyes.

"N-no I don't. I know that you were just trying to help me. Why would I think your annoying?"

Then silence again...

"I'm sorry"

"I'm sorry," They said at the same time.

Gilbert chuckled and Rose giggled.

"Now, can we go back to how it was before?" He asked standing up and walking to where she was sitting giving extending his hand.

Rose nodded. Then she took his hand and pulled him into a hug.

She nuzzled her head into his neck.

"I missed you," Gilbert heard Rose mumble against his neck.

"I missed you too" A soft smile spread across his face.

They pulled away and looked into the eyes of each other.

Gilbert's hands moved to her waist. He began to lean in.

But then there was a knock on the door.

Red spread across Rose's face.

Gilbert went to open the door.

Diana and Ruby stood there with a basket in their hands and smiles spread across their faces.

But Anne seemed a bit uneasy. Her head down.

"Hello, Gilbert! May we come in?" Diana said.

Gilbert nodded and let them in.

Ruby's face changed when she saw Rose sitting at the table but she still wore a smile.

Diana handed him a pot.

Gilbert took a seat at the table and opened the lid.

"We're sorry to intrude, but we just wanted you to have that" Gilbert nodded as he looked up at them.

"We're sorry for your lost" Diana smiled sadly.

"It's a shepherd's pie, we made it together especially for you," Ruby said.

"Thank you," he said glancing back at Anne.

"We hope you like shepherd's pie"

"Everyone likes shepherd's pie!" Ruby said turning to Diana.

"We hope it's a comfort to you Gilbert," Ruby said turning back to him.

"Anne made the topping. She's a good cook" Diana said.

"But I would make a terrible wife!" Anne suddenly yelled and ran out of the house.

"Well um...thank you for stopping by," Gilbert said standing up and Rose walked the girls out.

Marilla stood at John Blythe's grave. Her eyes filled with tears.

Her one true love. She stared at the tombstone and barely even noticed Gilbert approaching her.

She turned around when she heard footsteps.

"Gilbert. I'm sorry to intrud-"

"Oh, no, not at all Miss Cuthbert. Please.... take your time" Gilbert said putting his sack down in the snow.

Marilla turned back.

"I wonder how he feels about being so stationary. John was a traveler at heart." Gilbert walked closer picking up his sack.

"I believe the military moved him around a lot in his early years" Gilbert stood beside her.

"He had the life he wanted then. Full of adventure." Marilla said as he looked at her.

"I'd heard he settled in Alberta?" Marilla said turning to ask Gilbert.

"Um... we were a....large family for a while. I'm the last. The only" Gilbert chuckled.

"I'm sorry" Marilla felt sorry for the boy.

"No, it's okay" They both turned back to face the tombstone.

"We moved back here right after I was born" then he chuckled.

"The prodigal sons. That's what he used to call us"

"He took me back there recently. Alberta"

"He wanted to see it again"

"It's beautiful"

Now Marilla was speaking.

"In school, back when we were acquainted, John talked of big cities, of other parts of the world" her eyes wandered around.

"It seemed.........impossible"

"Sounds good to me" Gilbert smiled sadly looking to afar.

"You resemble him in many ways," She said taking a good look at him.

"There was nothing he could say to talk me into leaving. I wish..." she hesitated.

"He-he asked you to go with him?" Gilbert asked.

"I'll always be grateful of him to think I'd be brave enough"

"Obligation.......can be a prison"

"I've always wondered...." she stopped.

"I'll take my leave. Please reach out to us if you need anything at all" She told him.

"Thank you...Miss Cuthbert" He thanked.

Marilla turned around and walked back to Green Gables.
