Chapter 29- You're Not Leaving Me

''RUBY'' Anne exclaimed as she followed the sounds of her sobs through the darkened night.

''Leave me alone'' she cried

''I'M SO SORRY RUBY I NEVER WANTED TO HURT YOU, I LOVE YOU, I CAN'T EVEN BEAR TO ASK FOR FORGIVENESS'' Anne sobbed, apologizing to Rachel Lynde when she called her ugly was easier than this.

She doesn't speak she just cries and though Anne wishes to go towards her friend and hug her, she cannot summon the bravery.

"I just wanted him to look at me the way he looks at you" Ruby says as her sobs calm.

"Ruby you don't need any boy to look at you to be happy" Anne says as a tear slowly rushes past her rosy cheek.

"YOU DON'T GET IT" Ruby yells.

"Get what?"

"That he was supposed to love me not you! No matter how hard I tried to push him away from you, it never worked he still admired you from afar" Ruby said as her watery eyes transmitted a sea of tears.

"What do you want me to do Ruby? I'll do anything" Anne said.

"I want... I w-want" Ruby paused.

She looked at Anne as her once cheerful rosy cheeks now were filled with a pale white of sorrow. She ran over to her friend and hugged her.

Anne sobbed, that's all she ever wanted and together the girls sobbed as they leaned on the bark of the tree that hugged them in their time of despair.

"I'm so sorry Ruby! I want you to be happy and you called dibs and I just feel so dreadfully sorry. I'm such a terrible friend, I don't deserve the title of kindred spirit" Anne rambled between sobs.

"FOR ONCE SHUT UP ANNE" Ruby said sobbing and for some reason it was all Anne needed to hear. That day a sudden peace of mind laid between the girls, there was finally no secrets between them. Ruby knew that even as hard as she denied it Gilbert and Anne's feelings wouldn't go away, even if it hurt every inch of her body to see them together she wanted them to be happy and no dibs was going to ruin the new found happiness both girls found within if each other.

Anne's POV

As I opened my eyes and felt the sun hit my face and saw my lovely blossom tree by my windowsill I couldn't help but smile, it felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders, the guilt I felt every time I thought of Gilbert romantically that burdened my mind was now gone. Yet I'm still not at peace, because last night I rejected Gilbert Blythe because of my loyalty to Ruby but now nothing stands in my way of pursuing my heart and as much as it pains me to say, my heart is leading me to him.

I think my heart always knew I liked Gilbert; I just wasn't listening. I gathered myself up from bed and got dressed. I must see Gilbert as early as possible. I have to speak to him promptly and explain the situation.

I rushed downstairs and greeted Marilla and Matthew as I ate breakfast. I waved goodbye to them as I headed to school. I hoped to speak to Gilbert there and explain what had happened and finally tell him my true feelings, tell him how I like him ever so.

''Anne!''

I turn to my side to see my lovely friends Ruby and Diana heading towards me.

''Good morning lovelies'' I smile

I look at Ruby who gives me a shy look in return.

''why are you looking at each other like that?'' Diana puzzled.

''We have A LOT of catching up to do my dear bosom friend'' I sighed.

As we walked Ruby and I filled Diana on last night's occurrence, I told them all about the story club and Gilbert's confession. Diana gasped with every word, as much I hated to admit it I guess she was sorta right about Gilbert.

We reached school and went inside the classroom. I gave the girls one last hug goodbye as I went towards my destiny, to Gilbert's desk.

''Gilbert'' I said

''huh''

''Wait you are not Gilbert'' I said

''Yeah, didn't you hear?'' Charlie inquired

I give him a puzzled look.

''Gilbert is leaving this morning, something about needing to get away, he told me this early dawn''

''WHAT'' I cry

''He's taking a train west, supposed to take a job, said he needs to 'heal his wounds'. Whatever that means'' Charlie rolled his eyes at Gilbert's dramatics.

Without a second thought I flee, running as if a great magical beast is chasing me.
