Chapter 28- Yours and Mine

05:46, 3 January 2020

Anne's POV

Gilbert Blythe could be anywhere, and I was due at home for supper. So I set aside my journey for now to return home to Green Gables.

As I reached home, I smelled the scrumptious stew from the kitchen. I entered the house to find Marilla and Matthew setting up supper.

''Sorry for my lateness Marilla, it has been an exhausting day'' I said as I sat down next to them.

''You left poor Diana alone, when you left'' Marilla scolded.

I had completely forgotten about the fact that I had left for a 'walk' I hope to apologize to Diana tomorrow.

We discussed the new crops over supper as Marilla informed us of Rachel's ongoing newspaper business. We finished supper fairly quickly and proceeded to clean up.

''Oh Anne, Gilbert stopped by and left this for you'' Marilla says as she hands me an envelope.

I grab the letter urgently and open it quickly, inside a paper with his handwriting:

Dearest Anne girl,

Meet me by the schoolhouse at sunset I need to tell you something important.

- Gil

I laugh at his silly nick name for me 'Anne girl' I like it. I look outside to see the sun is already mid-way setting.

''Marilla can I leave for a bit I need to speak to Gilbert, about um studies'' I lied.

''As long as he walks you home if it turns to dark'' she said

I groan but still nod before heading out running towards the schoolhouse.

As I finally reach the schoolhouse, I notice his shadow by the bush.

''GIL'' I yell as we both run to each other.

''hello anne girl'' he smirks

I playfully punch him in the shoulder as we start walking side by side, our hands just barely touching. It gives my heart a thrill.

''I need to tell you something'' we both said at the same time, we laughed.

''You go first'' I said

''No please you go first''

''No, you'' I insisted

''Please you go'' he insisted

We stopped and looked at each other and chuckled. Maybe it was the windy night air, but I could swear I saw his cheeks turn red.

''It's a lovely afternoon isn't it, the trees look so solemn at nighttime, soliloquy. Stellimicans wouldn't you say? I just adore Latin, they make the most descriptive beautiful words. I rarely go out at night because Marilla forbids it. Speaking of which will you be able to walk me home Marilla's being stubborn and doesn't want me out alone speaking of which-'' I rant scared of what will happen if there's silence.

''Anne just this once I need you to listen to me'' he interrupts

I pause he has a desperate look in his eyes that I've never seen before and now under the light of the moonlight I notice the trickles of sweat going down his face and the bags under his eyes. What has he been doing?

''trust me?'' he says as he offers his hand. In the skip of a heartbeat I nod and take his hand. He wraps what feels like a cloth around my eyes to take away my vision. He leads my hand as we walk through the forest. Though I can't see a thing I can notice the shinning moonlight through the cloth, it's a crescent moon which according to Ms. Stacy means the moon must now be a waning crescent. I don't notice he came to a stop until the moon becomes covered by the leaves of a tree.

''I'm going to take it off now'' he says as I nod and he slowly slips the cloth from my face.

I gasp before my eyes stands the once befallen story club from its crumbles. It's made of slick oak wood; the opening is a small circular shape with a red curtain. The surrounding area is covered with plants and flowers which must have been adorned. Carved by the window are the words ''The Storyclub''

''y-y-you did this?'' I gasped, barely being able to make up words.

''Of course'' he confessed.

''Why?"

"Huh?"

"Why would you do this for me? I'm ugly, I talk too much, my cooking skills are atrocious, and my awful red hair is the b- "I babbled.

Before I can finish he closes the gap between our lips that I have been longing for him to fill since the day at his house when he almost did. I want to pull away, to say that he's making an awful mistake choosing to like me, but I can't. In fact I can't do anything at all, for the first time in my life I find myself eager to not talk, eager to not say a single little word.

He pulls away slowly, but he holds on to me. Holds my hand tight as we both gasp for air.

"Does that answer your question" he smirks

I chuckle "no I think we need to try it again"

"ANNE"

We look over to the side to see a blonde girl covered in gleaming water around her face.

"r-ruby?"

She sobs a hard-cruel sob that pains my ears "HOW COULD YOU?" Her voice breaks

She runs away as I hear the rustling of the leaves behind her steps, I snap back to reality as a tear slips from my eye.

"This was a mistake" I whisper

"What?"

"T-this was a mistake. I should have neve-"

"Anne no don't say that, we can't deny this anymore" he begged

He holds my hands tighter as my grip starts to loosen.

"GODDAMN YOU BLYTHE, I-I can't do this. She's my friend, and I can't put my own happiness above hers"

"Anne what are you saying?" he cracked.

"I'm sorry" I whisper as I let go of his hand and run, trying to follow the footsteps that Ruby left behind. I hear him screaming my name behind me and I can't help but let tears slip down my face, no longer crying for Ruby but crying for myself.

I start hearing a faint sob in the distance as I find Ruby sitting in a log crying
