Chapter 5- Slate Life

Anne's Point of View

After rehearsal Ms.Stacy decided to give us the rest of the day off since she noticed how exhausted we were. Isn't Ms.Stacy a gem or a bright shining crystal found in the deepest voids of the sea in the castle of the hidden magical mermaids. That will make for a perfect story! A hidden crystal found by the brave scientist that risks her life for science! Diana and Ruby will love it! Oh for a second there I forgot that our story club base was destroyed. Guess that story will have to wait its turn.

As we left the stage Diana and I as always decided to walk home together.

''You won't believe the day I had! Moody just keeps messing up the dance moves, its driving me insane!" Diana rants.

It's actually kind of boring to hear her rant about Moody. Is this how I sound when I rant about Gilbert?

''Anne!'' a voice behind me says.

I turn around to find Gilbert walking behind us

''Ignore him'' I say between my teeth

''Nonsense Anne'' Diana says as she turns around to greet Gilbert

Really Diana?!? WHY?

''Hey Diana, I just need to talk to Anne for a second'' he says.

''Of course I will leave you two alone'' she says as she turns back to catch up with Ruby but before leaving, making kissing expressions behind Gilbert.

''Diana, you are so dead'' I mutter. I keep walking expecting him to catch up to me which he does.

''Hello Gilbert'' I say in the most formal tone possible

''Hey'' he says, I can see he is a bit taken back from my tone which makes me smile a little bit, there are few times where Gilbert Blythe is taken back.

He clears his throat ''Um I just wanted to see if you wanted to come over and work on the dance, Bash is with Mary so we'd have the house to ourselves and since you messed up I thought you would need the extra help'' he says

''Me?! You are the one that was messing up, if anything you need help!'' I say loudly slightly yelling.

''and Bash called me crazy for saying you had a fiery temper'' he mutters but unfortunately for him I heard him perfectly fine.

''OH REALLY I HAVE A FIERY TEMPER? WHERE IS A SLATE WHEN YOU NEED ONE!'' I say this time actually yelling.

''YOU KNOW I JUST REMEMBERED I'M NOT AVAILABLE BUT A BROOM MIGHT BE ABLE TO REHEARSE WITH YOU'' I say as I rapidly walk away leaving Gilbert there frozen. I really need to work on not losing my temper so quickly, but I did quite enjoy seeing Mr.Smooth Talker be left speechless. Of course the moment of victory didn't last long because after a few seconds he catched up to me.

''I-I didn't mean to anger you Anne but we are partners and we both need some work on the dance'' he says.

He's right I could use the extra rehearsal normally I wouldn't care about a dance but the best dancer gets a 5% boost on their grades and Gilbert has a higher grade by 5% so I'm going to be the most graceful dancer in that stage. If only I could dance like Princess Cordelia, her graceful dancing takes everyone's breath away.

''Fine, but only because you really need the help and I've decided to be a good friend'' I said proudly

''Okay, can you come over later?'' he said admitting defeat that I will never confess that I need help.

''I will have to ask Marilla and Matthew'' I say.

''How will I know you're coming?'' he asks.

''I guess you're going to have to wait and see'' I say and walk away.

HA! In your face Gilbert Blythe I left with the power of the conversation.

I ran towards Ruby and Diana who had already passed us.

''Sorry, Gilbert Blythe talks a lot'' I say rolling my eyes.

''Oh Anne why does he always talk to you? And not me! Will he ever like me?'' Ruby says starting to tear up.

Ruby is a bit overdramatic and needs reassurance from anyone that says even a word to Gilbert that they don't like him. Of course her dramatic attitude makes for perfect stories so I guess her attitude has some good sides.

''Ruby we have been over this I don't like him in fact quite the opposite, Gilbert is only my formal friend and enemy and the only reason I'm talking to him is because he needs extra rehearsals and I have humbly accepted on helping him this afternoon. '' I tell her.

''You're going to be alone with Gilbert in his house dancing!'' She says this time truly crying.

Great I just made it worse.

''No not like that! It's just dancing and you know nothing would ever happen between us!'' I say trying to convince her and stop her from crying.

''J-just enemies?'' Ruby asks between sobs

''Yes, just enemies that don't hate each other'' I say but know saying it aloud sounds kind of weird.

Well either way it did the trick to stop Ruby's crying which was a relief. Ruby's house was the closest so after she went inside Diana just burst in giggles and squeals.

''You're going to Gilbert's house alone to dance!'' she says and signals quotation marks in the word dance.

''Your way over your head Diana, he is a terrible dancer I'm simply helping him to be polite.'' I say in a formal tone.

''mmhmm alright'' Diana responds doubtfully

Me and Gilbert?!? In your dreams Diana.

Before arriving home I found the most beautiful flower it was white and soft with yellow specks that were the utter most magnificent. The yellow specks reminded me of my freckles which is surprising since the yellow specks look beautiful in the flower but my freckles look dreadful in my face.

I soon arrived home, as I entered Green Gables I found Matthew reading the newspaper and Marilla cooking.

''Matthew look at this flower I found, doesn't it give you a thrill?'' I say as I give Matthew the flower.

''that's nice Anne'' Matthew says as he looks at the flower

''I shall name this flower Starling, for it's beautiful star petals'' I say looking at my new friend.

Marilla let's out a sigh

''How was school Anne?'' Marilla says as she chops some peppers.

''Could have been better I got paired with Gilbert for the dance'' I say

''I never understood why you don't like that boy, he is a respectful young man.'' Marilla says

"It's not that I don't like him, it's that he is a high intellectual like myself and their can only one smartest student in class, I don't want the title for only myself but for the girls to prove them they can do whatever a boy can do and more, as Jane Eyre said "A woman works twice as hard as a man for half the recognition" which is far from romantical just tragical. If only we lived in a world where we all saw each other as equals." I say as I close my eyes an imagine I was in castle wearing the most beautiful mint dress with puff sleeves. I spoke to my loyal subjects proudly and they cheered at my delightful use of words but soon I opened my eyes and found myself no longer surrounded by my loyal subjects just Marilla and Matthew.

"Oh Anne save the nonsense for later, your always rambling about heaven knows what" Marilla said.

I looked at Matthew he seemed conflicted, he opened his mouth to say something but hesitated and went back to reading his paper.

''Speaking of which is it okay if I go to Gilbert's house to rehearse? He is terrible at dancing'' I ask.

''Alright, I don't see why not.'' She responds.

''Just make sure to be back before night fall'' Matthew says.

''Really? Your letting me go to a boy's house with no one else around?'' I say surprised about how calm they are about this.

''I trust Gilbert and I know you will be in good hands'' she says

''Okay, then I guess I'm leaving now'' I say taking slow steps towards the door, hoping they would change their minds and I'd be able to spend my day exploring the woods or reading a book but as closer as I got to the door the more I realized that wasn't going to happen.
