Chapter 4- Staring Contests
03:55, 7 August 2018Anne's Point of View
Gilbert Blythe, my academic rival since day one. We've had our ups and downs through the year but at the end of the day he is still my competition, and I crush competitions therefore I will crush Gilbert Blythe.
Of course Ms.Stacy had to pick Gilbert, as if Diana wasn't satisfied enough on teasing me about him every day he came in a close proximity to me.
But either way he is way better than dancing with Billy Andrews because he is without a doubt the nastiest boy I have ever met in my entire life!
As I walked over to Gilbert in the stage I saw Ruby going towards Billy and I couldn't help but feel pity for her,I know how much she wanted to dance with Gilbert, I'll never understand why she wanted to dance with him but I could feel her sorrow. Gilbert clenched his jaw as we meet eyes, he is always clenching his jaw! Not that I notice but it's very annoying, it's a very unhealthy habit of his.
''We meet again'' he says.
I give him a friendly smile as we get in our dancing positions.
The music starts and the violin softly plays in to a beautiful melody, I wouldn't say it's as beautiful as the robins soft whistle but it's a close second. Gilbert begins to stare at me as if he's trying to uncover some hidden secret in my eyes, I shoot him an intimidating look but instead he chuckles. How dare he chuckle at my intimidation methods! I look away to think of a plan on how I could win this attempted staring contest with Gilbert but I catch Ruby looking at us from the corner of my eye and I know Ruby, she will definitely overanalyze our staring contest, as much as it pains me I have to let Gilbert win for the sake of avoiding having a talk with Ruby that may involve her in tears. I'll get him next time though.
As the dance came to an end, Ms. Stacy gave us a quick lunch break. Before I could even move a muscle Diana grabbed my hand and dragged me to a solitary corner in the back.
''What was that?'' she said as she giggled
''What ever do you mean Diana?'' I say confused.
''don't act so innocent, you and Gilbert'' she says, playfully hitting me in the arm
Gilbert and I what?? Diana sure can be confusing sometimes.
''I see the way he looks at you! And the way you look at him!'' she says
''Pfft Diana I must say your imagination is getting way bigger, because I was simply beating Gilbert in the staring contest he initiated'' I exclaimed.
Diana's playful giggle suddenly turns in to full on laughter, I wish I knew what the joke was cause laughing is one of the most wonderful things the human body can do and I love experiencing it.
''What's so funny?!'' I say as I wait for Diana to finish laughing at her inside joke.
''It wasn't a staring contest Anne! No one deeply stares at someone's eyes because they want to have a staring contest it means he has a crush on you.'' Diana says matter a factly.
''What! No, he wasn't, that's not true!'' I say trying not to stutter.
Diana raises her eyebrow as if she doesn't believe a word I'm saying.
''GILBERT BLYTHE DOES NOT HAVE A CRUSH ON ME!!'' I say but regrettably for me it came out more as a scream and the whole class turned their head my way.
Thankfully Gilbert was too busy talking to Ms. Stacy to notice the commotion I caused.
All Gilbert and I have done since we met is compete it's in our nature, it all started in the first day we met when he had the audacity to call me carrots in front of the whole class, the moment I wacked him with my slate I instantly knew he would be my rival, the one to beat and that conclusion has still not let me down. Of course we are friends now after I forgave his cruel conduct but I can't help but feel an urge to beat him, what can say I'm a born competitor.
But it in no way indicates that I would EVER possibly develop feelings for a boy such as Gilbert Blythe.
''It sounds like I'm not the one your trying to convince'' Diana says wisely breaking my thoughts.
This is what I get when I lend Diana one of my Jane Eyre books, she begins speaking like a wise old woman filled with experience. If only she would be wise enough to know that Gilbert Blythe would never fall in love with such a homely girl as myself. Never in a thousand years...
But deep inside Anne couldn't help but wonder if Diana was right...
