Chapter 18 - Between the Lines We Didn't Say
07:31, 29 June 2025Between the Lines We Didn't Say
"Some distances aren't measured in space, but in words left unsaid."
The plane ride back from Jeju was quiet.
Too quiet.
Y/n sat by the window, her face turned toward the clouds, earphones in but no music played.
Taehyung sat beside her, eyes on a book he wasn't reading. Every few seconds, his eyes flicked toward her hoping she'd look at him.
She didn't.
They hadn't spoken since that night.
No apologies. No explanations. Only silence, coiled tight around their throats.
And still... they couldn't escape the weight of each other's presence.
Back in Seoul, Y/n barely stepped through the doors of her family's mansion before her father's voice pierced the air.
"You're late."
She sighed, dropping her bag. "The flight was delayed."
Park Daehun stood at the top of the stairs in his signature tailored suit, disappointment etched across his face like a permanent scar.
"That's the excuse of someone average."
Y/n's back straightened. "I made it to the finals. Our presentation is ranked first among all regional schools."
"You're not in school to rank. You're here to dominate."
She clenched her fists. "You don't even ask if I'm tired."
"You don't have time to be tired," he snapped, walking down the stairs slowly. "You think investors care if their CEO is exhausted? They only care if she wins."
Y/n's voice cracked, low but fierce. "I'm not even the CEO yet."
Park Daehun stopped in front of her. "Then earn it."
The words hit like ice.
"And your little... 'partnership' with Kim Taehyung," he continued, tone filled with disdain, "has drawn unnecessary attention. People think it's romantic."
Her breath caught.
He sneered. "You're not a high school girl anymore. You're the future of my empire. So if you're going to use that boy, use him strategically. Don't get sentimental."
She felt her jaw tighten. "I'm not using him."
"No? Then you're wasting time."
She stared at him this man who had never hugged her after an achievement, never praised her unless it served him.
"I'm not like you," she whispered.
Park Daehun's expression hardened. "Then you'll fail."
She stormed out of the mansion.
She didn't know where she was going.
But her feet moved on instinct through the busy streets, past memories, past reason until she stood in front of a tall black gate.
The Kim estate.
It took her thirty minutes to ring the bell.
Taehyung opened the door looking half-awake, hoodie tossed on, barefoot, hair messy.
He stared at her in stunned silence.
"Y/n..."
She couldn't speak.
She didn't even know why she was there. She only knew that her hands were shaking and her heart was breaking from a hundred different directions.
"I'm not okay," she said finally.
And that was all it took.
He pulled her inside, closed the door, and wrapped his arms around her.
Not tightly. Not desperately. Just enough for her to feel held.
Safe.
She didn't cry. But she buried her face in his shoulder and let herself feel, for the first time that day.
Later, they sat on the floor of his room, backs against the bed. No lights. Just the soft glow of the moon pouring through the window.
"I used to think," she said slowly, "that if I just worked hard enough, I could earn love."
Taehyung didn't interrupt.
"My father only praises numbers. Not effort. Not heart. And now I don't even know who I'm doing this for anymore."
Taehyung's hand brushed hers gentle, not demanding.
"I see you," he said.
Two simple words. But they hit deep.
"I see the girl who works twice as hard to get half the warmth. The one who protects everyone but forgets herself. The one who deserves better."
Y/n's eyes shimmered, but she didn't let the tears fall.
"I hate how much I want to believe that," she whispered.
He leaned closer close enough that their foreheads touched.
"Then let me help you."
She closed her eyes, breathing him in.
They weren't kissing. They weren't confessing. But something passed between them in that closeness.
A promise not spoken aloud.
When Y/n returned home later that night, her phone vibrated.
A text from Taehyung.
"I'll wait. As long as you need. But please don't shut me out."
She stared at it for a long time.
Then typed back.
"Don't make me fall for you if you don't mean to catch me."
His reply came immediately.
"I never meant anything more."
