I said we'd lose. And what did you say? We'd do that together too

03:38, 8 May 2024

We hit the ground with a soft thud. I see Captain Marvel walk in front  of the ship, now not glowing. Surrounding her is Steve, Pepper, a... raccoon... and Rhodes.             Is this all that's left of the once mighty Avengers?             Immediately once we land we open the door and stumble outside, gasping for fresh air. It feels amazing. But also terrible. I'm alive.             Steve runs forward and helps Tony walk, Rhodes coming to help me.             "We couldn't stop him..." Tony mutters.            I stare at the ground.             "Neither could we." Steve states and we keep walking.             "Peter's gone." I mumble and Steve looks at me, at first in surprise and then sadly. Our procession barely falters but nonetheless we keep walking to the tower.             Pepper runs forward to kiss and hug Tony, she's sobbing in relief. She looks at me and hugs me briefly before they help us into the towers elevator. We hadn't been gone that long, not even a month but it felt like years. The tower was so... empty.          The elevator stopped and we piled out into the living room. All around us were virtual screens with pictures of the dead, or, 'snapped' as we had dubbed them. I didn't want to be here but I didn't have a choice, Tony said I should be sorry of this conversation. Everyone but Tony and I were standing up.          "It's been 23 days since Thanos came to Earth," Rhodes stated.           "World governments are in pieces, the parts that are still working are trying to take a census. It looks like he did exactly what he said he was going to do,  Thanks wiped out 50% of all living creatures." Natasha said somberly.         Tony had on glasses and looked like he was paying attention but I knew he wasn't, he couldn't tear his eyes away from Peter's picture on the screen in form of him. I, on the other hand, couldn't force my eyes to look at it.          We both had IV drips and my head was bandages but other than that, we were mostly whole. Not that I cared.          Thor was staring at the ground in the corner.         Tony leaned on his elbow, "where is he now?"         Steve shook his head, "we don't know. He just opened a portal and walked through."          I gritted my teeth in anger, Thanos thought this was saving the universe?           Tony sighs, "what's wrong with him?" Tony gesture to Thor in the corner.          The raccoon spoke up, "oh he's pissed, thinks he failed. Which of course, he did, but there's a lot of that going around ain't there?"          Tony turns to the raccoon in surprise, "honestly, till this exact moment, I thought you were a Build-A-Bear."           The raccoon doesn't flinch, "maybe I am."           "We've been hunting Thanos for three weeks now.  Deep space scans, and satellites, nothings working." Steve said. "Tony, you've fought him-"           "Who told you that?" Tony cuts him off. "I didn't fight him."           I finally look up.           "No, he wiped my face with a planet while the Bleecker Street magician gave away the stone." Tony added. "There's what happened, there was no fight, because he's not beatable.          Steve sighs and rubs his face. "Did he give you any clues, any coordinates, anything?"         "Uh..." Tony sputters. "I saw this coming a few years back, I had a vision, I didn't want to believe it. Thought I was dreaming."         "Tony, I'm going to need you to focus on." Steve says and stands up straighter.          Tony looks up, "and I needed you. As in, past tense. That trumps what you need. It's too late buddy. Sorry."          Tony stops and then sniffs, "you know what I need? I need a shave." Tony stand up and continues. "And I believe remember telling all of you alive and otherwise that what we needed was a suit of armor around the world. Remember that? Whether it impacted our precious freedoms or not, that's what we needed."       I snort and they all look at me. I look up and glare at them, "well he's not wrong. Tony said we'd lose, we all thought we'd lose and what did you say Captain?"        Steve hesitates, "that doesn't matter-"        I interrupt, "it does matter! You said "we'll do that together too" and guess what, you weren't there. We lost. And you weren't there. Peter died. And you weren't there."         I stand up as Tony also stand up.          "Were the Avengers, not the Pre-avengers, right?" Tony adds. He seems unstable.          Steve stays silent and Tony tips out his IV. I don't move as Rhodes runs forward to hold Tony still as the color leaves Tony's face.           "You made your point just sit down okay?" Rhodes asks.          "No, no, here's my point. You know what?" Tony points at Captain Marvel. "She great by the way."           "Tony, you're sick." Rhodes states.           "We need you, your new blood. Bunch of tired old mules, I got nothing for you Cap." Tony breaks free of Rhodes and walks forward to point an angry finger at Steve. "No clues, no strategies, no coordinates. Zero. Zip. Nada. No trust, liar."          Everyone's silent before Tony rips out his Arc Reactor. I take a startled step forward. Tony places the reactor in Steve's hand.           "Here, you take this. You find him, you put that on, you hide." Tony says before collapsing into the ground.          Rhodes and Steve put out hands to try and help him but he grumbles an "I'm fine." Before passing out.           Everyone starts rushing around to try and get him to a Med Bay while I slip away. I walk down the hallway and pretty soon I'm running, to where, I don't know, but I'm running. I get to the end of the hallway and I stop, out of breath. In front of me is Peter's room.            My breath catches in my throat and  I stand there. I stand there. Finally I put my hand on the cold doorknob and twist open the door.            His room looks the same. Why would I expect anything different? Same bed, same legos, same everything. Except no Peter.         I immediately run out of the room and to a spare bathroom, locking myself inside. In the midsts of my running my IV got ripped off and I feel weak. I look at myself in the mirror. I look dead.          I take a deep breath before slowly washing my face and patting my hair down flat. Once I have control of my tears and I don't look so... ghostly I walk back out of the bathroom and into a room in front of the med bay. Captain Marvel, Natasha, Rhodes, and Steve are already there. We can see Tony in the med bay through a window with Bruce taking care of him.          "Bruce gave him a sedative," Rhodes starts. "He's probably gonna be out the rest of the day."          "You guys take care of him and I'll bring him a Xorrian elixir when I come back." Captain Marvel says, leaning against the wall.          I have no idea what elixir she's talking about but I'm sure it'll help. No one's noticed me enteré the room yet and I want to keep it that way.           "Where are you going?" Steve asks as Captain Marvel starts walking out of the room.          "To kill Thanos." She responds without turning around.          Natasha is the only one who follows her and we can't hear what they're saying in the other room. Steve and Rhodes are silent. Finally Nebula comes into the room with Captain Marvel and Nat following.          "I know where Thanos is." Nebula states. "When Thanos worked trying to perfect me he would talk about his great plan. When I was assembled enough to speak I asked where he would go once he was done. His answer was always the same, to the garden."         "That's cute," Rhodes mocks. "He has a little retirement plan."          "When Thanos snapped tons of cosmic radiation's came form Earth, no one's ever seen anything like it. Until two days ago, not this planet." The raccoon states and shows a brown planet on the screen in front of him.          "Thanos is there, and he used the stones again." Natasha says, inspecting the planet diagram.          "Hey hey hey, we'd be going in shorthanded you know?" Bruce warns.          "Look, he's still got the stones so-" Rhodes starts.         "So let's get em." Captain Marvel finishes.           They nod and I walk away again, unnoticed.
