33. C.A. Civil War (3)

19:15, 19 November 2024

Dad, Uncle Sam, and I were sat in another glass-walled board room, watching Bucky's questioning with no sound. Sharon then walked in and placed some papers in front of Uncle Sam.

"The receipt for your gear," she informed him. He read it over and then asked,

"'Bird costume'? Come on."

I tried to stop myself from giggling as Sharon answered,

"I didn't write it."

From beside me, Sharon pushed a button to stop the sound restriction so we could hear what was being said on the TV.

"I'm not here to judge you. I just want to ask you a few questions. Do you know where you are, James? I can't help you if you don't talk to me, James," the doctor questioned Bucky receiving limited answers.

"My name is Bucky," Bucky stated calmly. Dad turned and looked at the printed image of the man speculated to have bombed the congress in Vienna.

"Why would the Task Force release this photo, to begin with?" Dad inquired.

"Get the word out. Involve as many eyes as we can?" Sharon responded.

"Right. It's a good way to flush a guy out of hiding. Set off a bomb. Get your picture taken. Get seven billion people looking for the Winter Soldier."

"You're saying someone framed him to find him," I asked, catching on.

"Steve, we looked for the guy for two years and found nothing," Uncle Sam added.

"We didn't bomb the UN. That turns a lot of heads," Dad stated, and Sharon joined again,

"Yeah, but that doesn't guarantee that whoever framed him would get him. It guarantees that we would." Sharon stopped and looked at the TV screen. We all followed her gaze.

"Yeah."

We continued to watch and listen carefully, all of us on high alert.

"Tell me, Bucky. You've seen a great deal, haven't you?" the doctor questioned.

"I don't want to talk about it," Bucky answered.

"You fear that... if you open your mouth, the horrors might never stop. Don't worry. We only have to talk about one."

All of a sudden, the power went out everywhere. I panicked, and Dad turned to Sharon before she told us where Bucky was,

"Sub-level five, east wing."

I followed Dad and Uncle Sam out the door to find Bucky and whoever the doctor was. We arrived outside the chamber, red emergency lights were flashing all around. There were agents knocked out on the floor, and the three of us cautiously continued walking. We then heard a voice,

"Help me. Help."

Uncle Sam and I stayed where we were as Dad walked up to the man.

"Get up," Dad ordered as he lifted the man and shoved him against the wall. "Who are you? What do you want?"

"To see an empire fall."

Uncle Sam and I finally entered the chamber, but Bucky was waiting for us and threw a punch. We ducked, and he hit the wall. Uncle Sam tried to fight him, but Bucky threw him across the room at the open pod Bucky was once sitting in. I tried to fight him off, lasting longer than Uncle Sam due to my strength, but Bucky got ahold of my arm and slammed me into the wall. Groaning in pain, I slid down the wall and landed on my butt. I watched as Dad and Bucky fought, and they ended up outside the chamber. Not being able to see them anymore, I tried to make my head stop pounding, but the alarms were not helping. I attempted to slowly stand up and crawled over to Uncle Sam as he was waking up. He then noticed the doctor looking down at the elevator shaft. Someone said something over the P.A. before Uncle Sam called out to the man,

"Hey."

The man bolted, and I helped Uncle Sam up so we could catch him. We followed him up a set of stairs, my head still pounding. The two of us ended up following him out the door, but people were running and screaming everywhere. I noticed a jacket on the ground and walked up to it as Uncle Sam looked around. We both determined that we had lost him, and Uncle Sam said under his breath,

"Damn it."

The two of us then started to look for Dad and found him soaking wet, holding on to a knocked-out Bucky. We knew we were now going to be wanted by the CIA, so we hid in a huge abandoned warehouse. Making sure Bucky was secured so he couldn't hurt any of us. I stayed with Uncle Sam, monitoring Bucky while Dad peered through gaps at the helicopter flying by. I then noticed that Bucky had woken up and called Dad over,

"Hey, Dad!"

He ran over and stood with me, holding my hand as Bucky spoke,

"Steve."

"Which Bucky am I talking to?" Dad asked.

"Your mom's name was Sarah."

We weren't convinced by that answer, so Bucky added with a chuckle, "You used to wear newspapers in your shoes."

I slightly smiled up at Dad as he answered,

"Can't read that in a museum."

"Just like that, we're supposed to be cool?" Uncle Sam questioned, but Bucky interrupted before Dad could reply,

"What did I do?"

"Enough,' I told him, trying to keep my tone soft.

"Oh, God, I knew this would happen. Everything HYDRA put inside me is still there. All he had to do was say the goddamn words."

"Who was he?"

"I don't know."

"People are dead," Dad stated, "The bombing, the setup. The doctor did all that just to get ten minutes with you. I need you to do better than 'I don't know.'"

"He wanted to know about Siberia. Where I was kept. He wanted to know exactly where."

"Why would he need to know that?" I asked.

"Because I'm not the only Winter Soldier."

Uncle Sam and I looked at each other with worry etched on our faces.

"Who were they?" Dad questioned.

"Their most elite death squad. More kills than anyone in HYDRA history. And that was before the serum.

"They all turn out like you?" Uncle Sam inquired.

"Worse."

"The doctor," Dad added, "Could he control them?"

"Enough."

"Said he wanted to see an empire fall."

"With these guys, he could do it. They speak thirty languages. Can hide in plain sight, infiltrate, assassinate, destabilize. They can take a whole country down in one night. You'd never see them coming."

Uncle Sam came up to us so we could have a semi-private conversation.

"This would have been a lot easier a week ago," he stated.

"If we call Tony-" Dad started, but I didn't let him finish,

"No, he won't believe us."

"Even if he did-"

"Who knows if the Accords would let him help," Uncle Sam concluded.

"We're on our own," I stated.

"Maybe not," Uncle Sam said, and Dad and I gave him a curious look before he continued, "I know a guy."

Uncle Sam had called his guy, and Dad had called Uncle Clint to pick up both Uncle Sam's guy and Wanda. Dad had also gotten us a navy blue punch buggy. We drove to meet up with Sharon to get Dad's shield and Uncle Sam's wings. I sat in the backseat behind Dad's driver seat with Bucky beside me. We parked under an overpass, and Dad got out to greet her. I turned to look out my window with my hand sitting under my chin. After a few minutes, Bucky spoke to Uncle Sam in front of him,

"Can you move your seat up?"

I turned to see Uncle Sam holding a stern expression as he answered,

"No."

I giggled and shook my head. After a moment, I felt someone put their hands on my waist and effortlessly lift me.

"Hey," I protested as Bucky lifted me over his legs so we could switch seats. When Bucky gently placed me down, I had a confused expression on my face, but I wasn't too upset about him moving me since I was short enough not to be squished. When I wasn't confused anymore, I smiled at Bucky before looking out the front windshield. All of a sudden, Dad leaned over to kiss Sharon, and I was just as shocked as I had been a few moments ago. Sharon got back into her car after they spoke for a moment, and Dad turned to look at us. All three of us had smirks on our faces, and Dad shook his head before getting into the car. The four of us then drove to the sixth level of a parking garage at the Leipzig/Halle airport. Dad pulled into a parking spot next to a grey van. I got out and walked around the car, and stood next to Dad as Uncle Clint got out of the van.

"Cap," Uncle Clint said, and I stepped up to hug him. "Hey, Kiddo."

I smiled, then stepped back to stand beside Dad while they shook hands.

"You know I wouldn't have called if I had any other choice," Dad told Uncle Clint.

"Hey man, you're doing me a favour. Besides, I owe a debt."

Wanda stepped out of the car.

"Thanks for having my back."

"It was time to get off my ass," Wanda responded to Dad, eyeing Uncle Clint. I smiled at her before Dad asked,

"How about our other recruit?"

"He's rarin' to go," Uncle Clint started as he went to open the van's side door, "Had to put a little coffee in him, but... he should be good."

"What timezone is this?" Scott Lang said as he stood, clearly jetlagged.

"Come on. Come on," Uncle Clint urged. Scott came over to me and Dad, then shook Dad's hand.

"Captain America," Scott said with an amazed expression.

"Mr Lang," Dad replied, and they continued to shake hands.

"It's an honour. I'm shaking your hand too long. Wow! This is awesome! Captain America." Scott looked down at me, "Katie Rogers!" He turned to look at Wanda, "I know you, too. You're great!" Turning back to us, Scott put his hand on Dad's shoulders, "Jeez. Ah, look, I want to say, I know you know a lot of super people, so... thinks for thanking of me." Lastly, Scott looked at Uncle Sam, "Hey, man!"

"What's up, Tic Tac?" Uncle Sam answered, leaning against the car with his arms crossed.

"Uh, good to see you. Look, what happened last time when I-"

"It was a great audition, but it'll... it'll never happen again."

"They tell you what we're up against?" Dad finally asked Scott.

"Something about some... psycho-assassins?"

"We're outside the law on this one. So, if you come with us, you're a wanted man."

"Yeah, well, what else is new?"

"We should get moving," Bucky spoke up.

"We got a chopper lined up," Uncle Clint added. Suddenly, a man on the P.A. spoke in German,

"Dies ist eine Notsituation. Alle Passagiere müssen den Flughafen sofort evakuieren."

I didn't understand what they were saying as I had only ever studied French, but Bucky appeared to understand and translated,

"They're evacuating the airport."

"Stark," Uncle Sam stated.

"Stark?" Scott questioned before Dad ordered,

"Suit up."

I nodded, then went with Wanda to change. Once we were suited up, I went with Uncle Sam and Bucky to find Uncle Tony's Quinjet using Redwing. Uncle Sam, Bucky, and I were in the terminal looking at Redwing's camera footage as he flew around the airport. After a bit of searching, I spotted it and spoke up while pointing,

"There!" I had been standing between the two men and looked to my right at Bucky. While pointing, I leaned forward, accidentally blocking Bucky's view. "Sorry," I said with an apologetic smile. Bucky softly smiled back and replied,

"Don't worry, Katie."

Uncle Sam then radioed Dad to let him know,

"We found it. Their Quinjet's in hanger five, north runway."

The three of us started running to get to the Quinjet. I noticed Bucky stayed close to me but didn't think much of it. While we were running, someone crawled on the window dressed in a red and blue, spider-like suit.

"What the hell is that?" Bucky asked, and Uncle Sam answered,

"Everyone's got a gimmick now."
