16. Moving into Avengers Tower

07:37, 7 November 2024

After the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the shooting at our apartment, Dad thought it would be a good and safe idea if we moved. Luckily, the perfect place for us to go was Avengers Tower. I had just finished packing up all my books into the last box, then stood and looked at the empty room sadly. Dad came up behind me and put his hands on my shoulders.

"Why the glum face?" he asked. I sighed and responded,

"Well, now that Uncle Nick is 'gone' I had to say goodbye to the bedroom that I was in for the first eleven years of my life. And now, I have to leave the bedroom that is filled with so many of the first memories I shared with you."

Dad turned me around and lifted my chin so I would look at his face.

"Katie, the memories are up here," he pointed to my head, "And here," then pointed to my heart, "A place is only temporary."

I smiled at him, then gave him a hug.

"Thank you, Daddy."

"Of course, Sweetheart. Now, let's get these boxes out to the car Tony loaned us."

Once all these boxes had been fit into the car, Dad and I said our final goodbye to the apartment and drove to the tower. Aunt Maria and Bruce helped us take all of the boxes to the floor that was just for me and Dad. The floor had two bedrooms with their own ensuite, an entrance area by the elevator, and a small living room. We dropped the final boxes in the living room when Uncle Tony walked in wearing a suit and his signature sunglasses.

"There's my favourite niece! Bring it in, Munchkin," Uncle Tony said with his arms spread wide. I laughed and ran into his arms to hug him.

"I'm your only niece, Uncle Tony," I laughed, looking up at him with my arms still wrapped around him. My short height caused my head to tilt back quite far.

"True, but my statement still stands. You don't mind if I borrow Katie for a bit, do you, Cap? You know your way around?"

"I don't mind, I can manage. Thank you, Tony," Dad replied and smiled at me as he brought more of his boxes into his room. Tony then guided me into my bedroom with a hand on my back.

"Now, I know that you have a preference when it comes to the colour of your walls," Tony started, "So do you want to see the best parts of your room?"

"Yes, please!" I said, beaming at him. He returned my smile and then spoke to JARVIS,

"JARVIS, could you show me the panel for the walls and windows."

"Of course, sir," JARVIS replied, and then a digital panel with a list of colours appeared. Tony then led us over to the panel and asked me,

"What colours would you like?"

"Um, pink and blue, please?" I answered. Uncle Tony selected those colours, and to my amazement, the walls changed to the selected colours.

"Woah!" I said as I looked at the walls with pure wonder.

"You can also change how much light comes through your windows here," Uncle Tony explained while he demonstrated the buttons.

"That's so cool!"

"And you can always ask JARVIS for help with anything."

"This is amazing, Uncle Tony! Thank you!" I hugged him so tightly. Uncle Tony just chuckled at my excitement and then left me to unpack.

I had just finished making my bed when Dad knocked on the door and came in.

"How are you doing in- wow!" Dad looked at my room with an impressed expression. When he first walked in through my double doors, he could see that the . He turned to look to the left, where my was against the wall, with two small bedside tables on either side. On the same wall as the door, to the left, was a for my clothes. In the back corner of the right side of the room was a and a bookshelf beside it, lined with all of my books. Lastly, there were two on the floor going across the room. I was very proud of how I had set up my room, and it felt just right.

"What do you think?" I asked Dad, excitement lacing my tone.

"It looks great, Sweetheart! I'm very proud," he replied, and I was so happy that he approved. It was now around 5:30 pm and almost time for dinner. "I came in to tell you to get ready for dinner. Tony, Pepper, Bruce, Rhodey, and Maria are joining us."

"Ok, I'll be down in five minutes."

Dad left the room, and I walked into my , which was through a door next to the bookshelf. I brushed my hair and left it loose, letting it flow down to my mid-back. I changed out of my hoodie and sports shorts into a nice shirt and jean shorts, then I went down to the kitchen floor.

"Hey, Katie. How are you?" Pepper asked as I walked toward the table.

"I'm doing very well. How are you?" I answered with a smile.

"I'm well, thank you!" She returned my smile, and I helped set the table. Then Uncle Tony walked in with Rhodey.

"Munchkin, you remember Rhodey, right?" Uncle Tony asked.

"Of course," I smiled.

"I've heard that you have become quite talented." Rhodey complimented, and I giggled,

"I suppose you could put it that way, but I still have lots of learning to do."

"If you ever need help from the War Machine, give me a call."

"I think you'll be calling her before she ever calls you, Pal," Uncle Tony said with a laugh, giving Rhodey a pat on the back. I laughed with Rhodey, and then we all sat down to eat.

Dinner was great and filled with lots of laughs. I felt much better about having to move than I had that morning and was excited to explore the building more. I changed into my PJs, brushed my teeth and hair, washed my face, and then went to say goodnight to Dad. I knocked on his door that was across the hall.

"Hey, Honey," Dad said once he saw me.

"I'm tired after moving in, so I'm going to get some sleep," I told him with a yawn.

"I think that's a good idea. Are we still on for our morning run?"

"Heck yeah!"

"Good," Dad chuckled, "I'll wake you up tomorrow then."

"Goodnight, Dad." I hugged him, then went to my room and hopped into bed. "Goodnight, JARVIS," I said.

"Sleep well, Miss Rogers." JARVIS then turned my lamp lights off for me, and I drifted off.
