New Beginnings
07:15, 19 May 2025The early morning sun spilled through the window of the safe house, casting a soft glow over the room. Derek sat beside Makayla on the couch, their shoulders barely touching, but the space between them filled with quiet understanding.
“How are you feeling?” Derek asked gently.
Makayla gave a small smile, her eyes still tired but steady. “Stronger. Because you’re here.”
He shook his head, a warm grin spreading across his face. “Babygirl, you’re the strongest woman I know.”
She looked at him then, the walls she’d built around her heart starting to crumble.
“I was scared,” she admitted. “Not just of him, but of letting anyone in.”
Derek’s voice softened. “You don’t have to be scared anymore. I’m not going anywhere.”
Her eyes glistened with tears—not just of pain, but of hope.
“I think… I’m ready to try again. With you.”
Derek reached out, tucking a stray curl behind her ear.
“Me too,” he said. “We’ll take it one day at a time.”
For the first time in years, Makayla felt safe—not just from the world, but in Derek’s arms.
And as the sun rose higher, a new chapter began—one written not just in survival, but in love.
