Trust And Tension
07:11, 19 May 2025The safe house felt smaller now. The walls seemed to close in, heavy with unspoken words and restless energy.
Derek sat across from Makayla at the small kitchen table, the flickering light casting shadows on their faces. The note weighed on both of them—proof that the unsub was watching, waiting.
“You should’ve told me about him,” Derek said quietly, breaking the silence. “Your ex.”
Makayla’s hands clenched into fists. “I thought I had it all behind me.”
He nodded. “But sometimes the past doesn’t want to stay buried.”
She looked up, eyes meeting his. “You never left my mind, Derek. Even when I tried to push you away.”
His breath caught. “I was scared. Scared I wouldn’t be the man you needed.”
She smiled sadly. “You’re stronger than you think. And so am I.”
The tension between them was electric, a mix of old wounds and new hope.
Suddenly, a noise outside made them both freeze.
Derek was on his feet, motioning for Makayla to stay down. He peered through the window, muscles tensed.
Nothing.
But the feeling lingered.
“We’re not safe here,” he said. “We need to move.”
Makayla nodded, swallowing the fear rising in her chest.
As they packed up, Derek’s hand brushed hers.
“Whatever happens, I’ve got you,” he promised.
She squeezed his hand back.
For the first time in a long time, Makayla believed him.
