Close Quarters
07:10, 19 May 2025The safe house wasn’t much—a modest townhouse tucked into a quiet neighborhood miles from the chaos of the city. But to Derek Morgan, it was the closest thing to a fortress they could get on short notice.
Makayla stood by the window, arms crossed, watching the street with calm eyes. Her posture was relaxed, but Derek knew better. This woman had survived storms far worse than any unsub.
Derek unpacked his gear in the corner, carefully setting down his weapons, radios, and evidence bags. The familiar rhythm grounded him, but the weight of what they faced settled deep in his chest.
“You’re not pacing,” Makayla observed, breaking the silence.
“I’m not,” Derek said, smirking. “But I’m thinking.”
She smiled softly. “I can tell.”
He leaned against the wall beside her, close but respectful of the space she kept.
“I know this isn’t easy,” he said quietly. “Being here. Knowing he’s out there.”
Makayla’s jaw tightened. “Easy isn’t in my vocabulary.”
He nodded. “You were always the strongest person I knew.”
She looked up at him, vulnerability flickering in her eyes. “Did you ever think about me all these years?”
Derek’s breath hitched. “More times than I can count.”
For a moment, the noise of the world faded. The past, the fear, the pain—all of it held at bay by the simple truth between them.
Makayla reached out, her hand brushing against his.
“Babygirl,” Derek whispered, using the nickname without thinking, as if it belonged to both of them now.
She didn’t pull away.
But just as the moment stretched, a sudden knock shattered the fragile calm.
Derek’s hand snapped to his sidearm. “Stay here.”
He moved swiftly to the door, eyes sharp as he peered through the peephole.
A courier stood there, holding a small envelope.
Derek opened it carefully, eyes scanning the note inside.
Makayla appeared behind him, reading over his shoulder.
The message was chilling:
“You can’t hide. I’m closer than you think.”
Derek’s jaw clenched.
“Makayla,” he said, voice low but fierce. “We’re not just fighting to keep you safe. We’re running out of time.”
She met his gaze, steady despite the fear.
“Then we fight,” she said.
And in that moment, side by side, they both knew this was more than just protection.
It was a battle for her heart—and maybe, just maybe, a chance at healing both their scars.
