Chapter 6: Lines We're Not Supposed to Cross

16:11, 22 May 2025

Bora hadn't moved for a solid five minutes. She stood in the hallway like someone had unplugged her brain, Noah's words looping in her head like a broken record."I wasn't pretending when I said I liked you."What... what did that even mean?It was supposed to be pretend. A convenient lie. A mutual agreement. But Noah never played fair. And now, worse than that... he wasn't playing at all.

Back in her room, Bora paced while clutching her phone like it might explode.Texting him felt ridiculous.Bora:That thing you said. Before the elevator. She hovered for a second, then added:You were kidding, right?Read. But no reply.Seconds passed. Then a minute. Then—Noah:You want me to lie again?I can. If that makes it easier. She sat on the edge of her bed, phone in her lap, head spinning. This was getting complicated. Fast.

The next day at campus, Bora was barely functioning. She tuned out lectures. Ignored texts. Nearly left her coffee on the roof of her car.So naturally, the universe decided that today was the perfect day for Han Noah to show up at her department lounge. She was halfway through stabbing her salad when she looked up and saw him leaning in the doorway, hands in his pockets, all casual swagger and chaos."Are you stalking me now?" she muttered, standing."Just passing by," he said with a smile. "Thought I'd walk you to class.""I have a lab.""Perfect. I'm great with beakers.""You're not even in this department.""I'm very interdisciplinary," he teased.Bora sighed. "Why are you here, Noah?"He looked at her for a long second. "Because you haven't answered the question.""What question?""Do you want me to lie?"She froze. There it was — no jokes, no smirking. Just his eyes on hers, blue and sincere in a way that made her stomach twist."I told you I wasn't pretending," he said softly. "But if this was just about blind dates for you... if you never meant for it to go anywhere, I'll play the part. I'll be your fake boyfriend. Just say the word."Her mouth went dry. Because that was the thing. She wasn't sure what she wanted anymore.Noah had always been a flirt. But he had also remembered her favorite sea creatures, made her laugh when she was tense, and brought her mom flowers. And now he was offering to step back if she needed him to.How was she supposed to protect herself from someone who was... actually kind underneath all the teasing?"Noah," she said finally, voice quieter than she meant. He waited."I don't know."He nodded. No push, no sigh, no disappointment. Just an easy smile."Okay."And that somehow made it worse.Because now she wasn't just lying to her family anymore. She was lying to herself, too.

That night, while her roommates were asleep, Bora pulled out her phone and stared at her chat with Noah. Her thumb hovered over the keyboard. Then, with a quiet breath, she typed:Bora:If this stops being pretend...Then I need you to promise something.Noah:Anything.Bora:Don't fall for me unless you're sure.Because I don't do "just for fun."

The dots blinked.

Noah:Who said I wasn't already sure?

And just like that... she realized the rules had changed. And she had no idea what came next.
