Field Play
16:00, 23 March 2025Monday morning was something. When I arrived at school, I was informed by Scott and Stiles that Derek had visited them too. Well, Scott, so Stiles by association. I didn't tell them everything about my family, but I gave them the loose details .
"Derek said that my mother was supernatural. A guardian. I'm still working out the details, seeing what I can find. Right now we need to worry about you Scott. I don't have instability. And I don't think the hunters know about me. Or even my family, as far as I know. But you Scotty boy, are public enemy number one."
Scott groaned, leaning against my locker. "I don't want to back out of the game. You said that Jackson probably won't be able to play, right?"
I nodded, pursing my lips. "Last thing that he texted me was that Lydia and him were waiting for the doctor, but it didn't look good. A separated shoulder. But if Derek doesn't think you should play, maybe you shouldn't. At least until we figure out how to keep you from killing someone on the field."
"But I want to play! Everything is finally working out besides this stupid werewolf problem!" He whined, causing me to let out a soft laugh.
"Cmon, let's go talk to Finstock, see if we can get you out of this game." I said, dragging him along towards coach's office.
It did not go well.
"What do you mean you can't play the game tomorrow night?" Coach asked, glaring at the boy beside me.
"I mean, I can't play the game tomorrow night," Scott repeated.
"You can't wait to play in the game tomorrow night?" Coach tried to correct, causing me to groan.
"No, coach, he can't play in the game tomorrow night." I corrected, leaning against the doorframe with my arms crossed.
Coach spluttered in surprise, and I glared at Scott to come up with a reason, preferably a good one. "No, I can't play. I'm having some personal issues."
"Is it a girl?"
"No."
"Is it a guy?" Scott looked mortified at Coach's questions, and I let out a small chuckle. "You know, our goalie Danny's gay." Coach added.
"Yeah, I know, Coach. But that's not it." Scott mumbled.
"You don't think Danny's a good looking guy?" Coach asked, and I actually laughed this time, causing Scott to turn around to give me a glare.
"Sure, he's good looking. But I like girls." Scott protested. "And that's not it anyway! I-"
"What? Is it drugs? Are you doing meth? Cause I had a brother who was addicted to meth. You should have seen what it did to his teeth."
Coach kept talking about his meth addicted brother as I debated whether or not I should step in and help Scott. This wasn't looking so good for him.
"Coach, I'm having some issues dealing with aggression." Scott finally cut in. A good half truth on his part, I was pleasantly impressed.
"Well, here's some good news. That's why you play lacrosse. Problem Solved." Coach said.
"Coach, I can't play in the game tomorrow night."
Coach sighed, leaving back on his desk. "Listen McCall. Part of playing first line is taking on the responsibility of being first line. Now, if you can't shoulder that responsibility then you're back on the bench until you're ready."
"Coach-" I said, stepping in to try to reason, but Scott cut me off.
"So if I don't play the game you're taking me off first line?" Scott asked, brows creased together.
"McCall. Play the game." Coach stated, before leaving us standing in an empty office.
I left Scott to go to class, the rest of the day passing quickly. For the next couple hours, I was playing catchup after skipping my last few days of school. I watched Scott and Lydia up at the board, and it looked like they were talking. I tried to listen to their conversation, but they were quiet. I just caught the end, which was Lydia threatening to introduce Allison to all the hot lacrosse players. Lydia finished the problem and strutted back to her seat, and I gave her a small glare. "Way harsh Lyd."
Class ended and I caught up with Stiles and Scott who were hiding behind a wall. I raised a questioning brow, and Stiles filled me in. "Curfew because of the animal. But, my dad doesn't have all the pieces."
"Well what are you gonna do, you can't just announce to your dad that Derek is a werewolf." I said.
"No, but I can find the other half of the body." Stiles said with a tonne of finality before walking away.
"Are you kidding?" Scott asked, both of us watching him go before seeing Lydia introducing Allison to some lacrosse players. I grimaced, letting Scott go and talk to her alone. Whatever he said seemed to make Scott pretty angry, because he turned and brushed past me, a dark look on his face.
Not even a few hours later, I got a text from Scott to meet him at his house. I was flopped on his bed when Stiles came rushing in, a hundred questions slipping past his lips. I let out a laugh, glancing up at him.
"Yes, I've had a bunch of adderall, so-"
"There's something buried at Derek Hale's house. I could smell it."
I sat up, raising a brow slightly.
"Smelled what?" I asked
"Blood."
"That's awesome! I mean, that's terrible." Stiles corrected himself. "Who's blood?"
"I don't know. But when we do, your dad nails Derek for the murder."
I sat up a little straighter. "Hey, hey, this is not a good plan. Derk is the only person who knows enough about the supernatural to help us. We are not sending him to jail." I said, crossing my arms.
"Stiles can help me figure out how to play lacrosse without changing. Because there's no way I am not playing in that game." Scott said, completely ignoring my comment.
"Scott Michael McCall!" I said, but both boys were already making plans. I was livid, storming out of his house and slamming the front door shut behind me.
I couldn't believe them sometimes. Honestly, how did they think this was going to be a good plan? All this was going to do was cause more problems. Whatever, if they wanna screw up their lives, who am I to stop them? I hoped that whatever stupid idiotic plan they came up with got them in trouble.
As frustrated as I was with Derek, he was still like family and I definitely did not want him getting arrested. Sure, I could go and tell him, but honestly, I wasn't sure if I could face the charred remains of the Hale house. It would just make it hurt 100x more. I decided to take the night just to recompose myself, heading home and locking the door behind me. I made my way upstairs to my bedroom, checking to make sure my window was locked before pulling on more comfortable clothes.
I was asleep within moments, but I kind of wish that I hadn't, because the nightmare was much worse than anything I would be doing with Scott and Stiles.
-----☾-----
I was standing in the woods, wearing what I had worn to bed. There was a man standing a few yards in front of me, his back turned towards me so I couldn't see his face. "My sweet Cassandra. I'm disappointed. I would have hoped you would be putting the pieces together much faster. After all, you don't want to be the reason I have to kill your friends, right?" he cooed.
"Who the hell are you!" I yelled, trying to take a step forward to get to the man.
"You know me. I picked you because I knew your potential. Don't disappoint me."
I woke up with a start, once again not in my bedroom. I was sitting at the desk in my mothers drawing room, a canvas covered in a drawing in front of me again. The picture was different this time. It looked like a younger version of my mother, maybe age 20 or 21, standing with a man, with piercing blue eyes. He was laying on a table, and he looked injured, his fangs bared in a growl. I felt like I knew the man, but once again I felt like I should know who it was. I frowned, shoving the canvas behind the first one I had drawn.
My hands were trembling, and I tried to blink back the tears that were welling in my eyes. The house was dark as I hurried into my bedroom, wiping the stray tears off my cheeks. I had like 10 missed calls and 50 texts from Stiles, so I quickly called him back.
"Cassie! What the hell! We're kinda in the middle of a crisis!" He almost yelled, causing me to flinch back from the phone.
"I'm sorry" I said softly, pursing my lips.
"Shit, Cassie is everything okay?" The concern in Stiles' voice made my grimace, nodding slightly.
"I'm fine. Really. What happened?"
"We found the body. It was buried in his yard. Well it was a wolf but then it was a girl. So we got Derek arrested. But then we were driving away, and I had the wolfsbane flower in my bag and Scott couldn't breathe and then I stopped the car and now Scott is gone and he was freaking out. Now I can't find him and I'm outside your house." Stiles was talking at 1000 miles a minute and I barely had time to process before I realized I needed to get dressed.
"Right, okay, give me two minutes and I'll be out there." I said before hanging up the phone. I tossed my pajamas on the floor and pulled on black jeans and a silver long sleeve sweater, along with my leather jacket and some black boots. I ran down the stairs, not bothering to cover my purpling eye bags and red puffy eyes.
I locked the front door behind me, making my way out to his jeep. "This, this is exactly why I don't let you plan things without me." I grumbled as I slid into the passenger seat.
I felt his critical gaze scanning over me. "What happened to you?" he asked, and I turned to glare at him.
"Not a problem for right now. We need to find Scott." I said flatly. He didn't move and I tapped my fingers on my leg. "Go. Drive dumbass."
"I called dispatch-" Stiles started, and I groaned.
"How mad did Jane get?" I interrupted, a smirk on my face.
"Very, she hung up on me. I wasn't very discreet though."
I laughed, a smile on her lips as Stiles drove around town.
"Okay, well let's think. Knowing Scott, where would he go?"
We both paused for a moment before looking at each other. "Allison." I started, but looked at the clock. "But, the game starts soon. You need to get there." I said flatly.
He pulled up outside the school and we both got out of the car. Stiles went to rush inside and I grabbed his arm. "Try, please try to convince him otherwise. Whatever you need to say, but please be supportive. I really don't want this entire day to be a mess"
He nodded, squeezing my hand gently as he made his way into the school. I turned away, walking out towards the fields. Part of me wanted to sit on the bench with Stiles, but I knew Lydia would flip on me if I didn't sit with her and Allison. My eyes scanned the crowd as I tried to find my strawberry blonde best friend, frowning as I saw her threatening Scott. I groaned, but Lydia had left him before I could get to them. I gently patted Scott on the shoulder as I passed him, going to sit beside the two girls.
Mr. Argent was seated beside Allison, so I quickly introduced myself. "You must be Mr. Argent, it's nice to finally meet you. I'm Cassandra Lightwood." I said, extending my hand.
The man looked me up and down, shaking my outstretched hand. "Lightwood? That's not a very common last name." He noted. I chuckled awkwardly, shrugging my shoulders.
"My parents weren't very common people." I said, my tone with just a little less friendliness. The whistle blew not even a moment later, and I turned back to face the field. It started off a bit rough, but after a few minutes Jackson scored. Lydia and I stood to cheer, and she made Allison stand to hold a sign saying 'We luv u Jackson'. I grimaced, knowing she was doing this mainly to frustrate Scott on the field. It didn't help that nobody on the team was passing to him either.
I made eye contact with Stiles, and the concern on both of our faces was clear to see. Jackson, that sneaky little bastard, was up to something, and if I had to take a guess, he probably told the whole team not to pass to him. I sighed, sitting back down to rub my eyes, the tiredness washing over me again. The game continued, with Beacon Hills losing
Not even a few seconds later I could tell that Scott was borderline about to shift. I quietly excused myself from Lydia and Allison, luckily just in time, because I caught Lydia's nasty remark. I settled on the bench beside Stiles. "Is this going to be bad?" I asked, but my question was answered pretty quickly, just not in the way I had anticipated.
Something had flipped a switch in Scott's head, because he was going full steam ahead. He snagged the ball, took off towards the goal, and flung it in the back on the net. Stiles and I were immediately on our feet, cheering loudly.
"Pass to McCall! Pass to McCall!" Coach yelled, waving his clipboard in the air. I whooped, cheering Scotts name as I gleaned behind me, looking at Allison, who had a proud smile on her lips. However, my joy faded quickly when I caught a glimpse of glowing eyes and bared teeth. The boy with the ball tossed it to Scott, and my jaw dropped. Coach settled in between us, arms around our shoulders. "Did the opposing team just deliberately pass us the ball?"
I nodded as Stiles replied, "Yes, I believe so Coach."
Scott's shot ripped a hole through the keeper's stick, which made Coach debate with the ref for a few moments before they counted the goal. The next play had Stiles and I on our feet, ready to rush out onto the field to stop a murder. Luckily, we didn't have to, and Scott made the shot, he dropped his glove, taking off into the woods as I looked over at Stiles. "We need to go help" I muttered under my breath, but Stiles was more concerned about his dad's phone conversation.
After a moment the Sheriff hung up, looking between the two of us. "The dead girl's name was Laura Hale." my heart beat faltered, chest tightening. Another Hale, dead. "And Derek was released. The M.E declared she was killed by an animal. And they found wolf hairs on the body. I need to go, I'll see you at home."
Stiles and I nodded, and I tried to ignore the sadness and anxiety bubbling in my chest. "We should go find Scott." Stiles said softly, pulling me to my feet as we headed into the locker room. We had just opened the door and started walking inside when we realized Scott and Allison were making out, so I tugged Stiles behind the lockers. We weren't quite fast enough, because as Allison walked past her cheeks flushed scarlet and she waved, uttering a soft "Cassandra, Stiles."
We both awkwardly smiled back, nodding in agreement as Scott stumbled towards us, a dazed look on his face. "I kissed her!" he mumbled.
"We saw," Stiles said, a proud look on his face.
"She kissed me," he said, the smile on Scott's face growing.
"We saw that too," I teased, but I was smiling at his happiness.
"Pretty good huh?" Stiles asked, and I slapped him on the arm.
"I - I don't know how, but I controlled it. I pulled it back. Maybe I can do this? Maybe it's not that bad." Scott looked so hopeful and happy, so Stiles and I shared a look. Our bad news could wait a couple hours.
"Great, well, we can talk later," I said softly, turning around to leave. I didn't cover my emotions well enough because Scott turned me around, looking at us with concern.
"What?" He asked.
Stiles sighed before speaking. "The medical examiner looked at the other half of the body we found."
"And?"
"Well we'll keep it simple: Medical Examiner determines killer of girl to be animal, not human. Derek is human, not animal. Derek not killer. Derek let out of jail." I said softly, bracing for Scotts anger.
"Are you kidding?" He cried, and I shook my head.
"No, and here's a bigger kick in the ass. My dad ID'd the dead girl, both halves. Her name was Laura Hale." Stiles said softly.
"Hale?"
"Laura was Derek's sister." I said quietly.
