"matt, don't fuck with me. this isn't funny." kaia stares at him, then back down to the mini ring box.

"holy shit, i thought he was fucking proposing for a second." chloe has a hand over her heart as she stands next to chris, his arm around her.

"it's a promise ring. because of what we talked about last night. we graduated, now we're moving on to bigger things in our life and i needed you to know i'm always gonna be here. and obviously that i'm gonna marry you when we're older." matt looks at kaia nervously and takes the ring out of the box and puts it on the ring finger on her right hand.

kaia stands there completely speechless and looks around at everyone watching them.

she notices jimmy and justin recording with huge smiles on their faces and all the rush of excitement turns to a pit of anxiety in her stomach.

"i just need a minute." she manages to get out before rushing upstairs and  into matt's room, closing the door behind her.

"did i do something wrong?" matt turns to chloe, justin and jimmy stop recording.

"not really. she just has anxiety when she's put on the spot infront of a bunch of people. she seemed really happy, she just got nervous. go talk to her, i'm sure she's okay." chloe pats matt on the back and he nods, heading upstairs while everyone else goes back to talking.

at first, he thought she'd be locked in the bathroom, but he saw that the bathroom was empty and his bedroom door was shut.

matt knocks on the door, hearing a quiet "come in" from the other side.

he opens the door to see kaia sitting on the floor against the wall by his closet. he shuts the door and sits down on the floor next to her, noticing that she's spinning the ring anxiously around her finger while examining all the tiny diamonds that create a full circle around the entire thing.

"i'm really sorry if that was awkward for you, i didn't even think about how you'd feel with everyone watching. i should've just given it to you in private." matt puts his arm around kaia's shoulder and looks at the ring with her.

"it's okay. i was just so shocked and then i saw your dad and brother recording and i got super anxious because i felt like i had to have some big reaction and i have a hard time showing my emotions to big things like this." she shakes her head and smiles at him soothingly.

"i should've thought about that, i'm sorry. i thought you hated it for a minute when you ran upstairs." matt laughs to break the tension.

"no! not at all. i'm so happy and overwhelmed with joy i just blanked and didn't know what to say. i love this so much, i had no idea you ever bought this or wanted to be that serious with me. to be completely honest, one of my biggest fears has always been that after we graduate and you get even bigger on youtube, you'd kinda just leave me once you got even more famous." kaia turns towards him to express her seriousness.

"first of all, this ring is so you know that i will never leave and that i want to be with you forever. i obviously grew up with a pretty big family, and i always knew i wanted to have one with you, too. secondly, i hate the word famous. i mean, i know we're doing pretty well right now, but i don't ever want to change. la is fun and i enjoy being there, but i always love being at home in boston with you and all our current family." matt smiles and grabs both of kaia's hands.

"you don't understand how much this actually means to me, i wish i could show it better. you shouldn't have spent real money on this, i would've been happy with a ring pop." she laughs and looks again at the ring.

"it matches our tattoos, look at the inside." matt points at the ring and kaia takes it off her finger.

she reads along the inside and sees tbe engraving that reads "i promise" just like the matching tattoos. matt points to his and her wrists then back at the ring.

"i love you so much." kaia wraps both her arms around matt's neck and hugs him tightly, his arms around her lower back.

"i love you more." he smiles and kisses her strongly.

"ready to leave? it's 7:05." nick asks as matt and kaia walk down the stairs together.

"yes, let's go." matt nods.

because there are 8 people, they all had to cram tightly into the minivan. matt and kaia up front, nathan, amanda, and  nick in the far back, chloe and zeke in the two middle row seats, and chris volunteered to sit on the floor between the two middle seats.

"everyone ready?" matt turns around to double check that they're all okay.

"aye, aye, captain." chris solutes him from the floor.

"stay down there, doofus. i could get pulled over if a cop sees you on the floor." matt laughs and starts the car.

matt backs out of the driveway and kaia is still completely occupied by the ring. she decided not to post it on social media, some things that significant are better kept private.

they blast music with the windows down the whole way over, eventually finding a parking spot at the very busy prom venue.

it takes a few minutes to get everyone out of the car and situated before they all make their way inside as one big group, nick brought his camera to document the night and take nice photos for everyone.

nick and zeke walk in together holding hands, same with nate and amanda, chris and chloe, and a very overjoyed matt and kaia.

they quickly see all their other friends and spend a good half hour just talking to people and getting pictures with all their friends.

because the prom was privately run by students and not the school, there was a full bar. kaia and chloe both agreed to not get hammered because it was a big night and they wanted to remember it all. plus the fact that they had a noon flight to la tomorrow; that mixed with hangover would not be very pleasant.

the girls did sip on a few drinks throughout the night, but only to a level of being slightly tipsy, not drunk and stumbling.

everyone danced to the loud music and a couple of kaia's friends asked about the ring, she told them to just keep it offline but that she was very happy.

around 11pm, nick ran up to matt, chris, and nathan who were sitting on the side watching the girls dance together.

"you're never gonna believe it." nick had to say pretty loudly due to the ear piercing volume.

"zeke ask you to be his boyfriend yet?" chris replies.

"what the fuck? how did you know?" nick asks, an unbearably large smile plastered across his face.

"he's with the girls right now and they're all giggling and screaming, that was just my first guess." chris shrugged and nate patted his back, a job well done for a first try guess.

"oh, they're waving us over. better go." matt gestures and all four of them walk over to their dates.

as he approaches, kaia smiles and opens her arms up for matt to come dance with her, pulling him into a deep kiss along the way. he feels the ring against his skin as kaia's hands are in his hair to hold him closer.
