Chapter sixty: Pain

I pushed Ember on the swings as she laughed manically at me "higher mommy!" She instructed with her arms spread either side of her in the air. I grinned "you sure you want to? You're pretty high up already"

"Mommy- I am grown up now. Higher" she said again but in a more stern voice that made me listen instantly. This child ruled the roost in our lives.

Evan wrapped an arm around my waist with his other hand rubbing my belly. "It's so cold" he grimaced with his nose going red.

"Stop being a big baby" I groaned; pinching his cheek making him yelp. "I am not a baby" he deadpanned. "But.. I am your baby" he replied softly in my ear which made me scrunch up my face.

"That was so cheesy" I scolded with disgust "you always come out with some shit" I continued with a hearty laugh.

"I want to get off!" Ember screeched as the swing took her higher, her little face had paled in colour whilst her hands gripped the handles.

Evan grabbed the back of the swing and stopped it which made her breath out a gasp of air in relief "thank you daddy. That swing was just too boring I had to get off"

"Ahh is that what it was? Had me fooled there. I thought you were scared" Evan chortled with a look of amusement that made Evan cross her arms. "Me scared ? Silly daddy. Never"

Swallowing thickly I felt a pain coax my body and send waves of extreme pressure into my pelvis. Holding onto my belly I bit down on my lower lip; trying to regain my composure.

"Are you okay Maeve?" Evan asked intently, his arm wrapping around my shoulders to hold me up from my buckled over position.

I nodded and yelped as another pain swam through me "it hurts" I breathed.

"Are you in labour?" Evan asked with widened eyes "fuck you are aren't you?"

I frowned "I don't know. It just hurts" I hissed

Ember scurried over with a grin "I think the babies want to meet me"

Evan ruffled up her hair "I think they do princess. Let's help mommy back to the car"

Ember nodded and took my hand whilst Evan took most of my weight, our legs trailing towards the jeep.

Another contraction shuddered my body and made me hiss in anguish "fucking hell. why does it have to hurt so bad"

Evan stroked my head "because you're in labour. It's meant to hurt" he stated bleakly as if I was stupid and didn't realise what was happening. Clenching my jaw I shoved him off me and got in the jeep by myself.

In an instant Evan began driving to the hospital with sweat dripping down his brow. The colour in his face was nonexistent and his knuckles were white from the grip he held on the steering wheel.

Gasping I cried out in pain, my belly tightening to a rock as my head fell into my lap. "Fuck, shit. This is worse than I can remember" I cursed with my nails digging into the leather seat. Resurfacing an intimate moment making me inwardly giggle, funny how things can switch up.

"Mommy be brave" Ember told me softly with a caring look spread out on her face.

Before I could thank my supportive daughter she continued speaking.

"If I was you I wouldn't be like this" she followed with pursed lips making anger boil in my veins.

"Why thanks darling. That's the sort of support I needed" I hissed with a glare which made Maeve smirk in accomplishment.

"Shit" I cursed as I felt an unholy amount of pressure in my buttocks. I couldn't surely be needing to push already? I had only been having contractions for half an hour.

"Are you okay?" Evan queried with panic, his foot pressing down more on the gas.

"I think... I think I need to push" I breathed in horror as I peeled down my leggings and panties. My hand felt down to my lower region where I felt a bulge. The babies head.

"Yep.. that's a baby" I choked on my saliva with surprise.

I gripped onto my seatbelt and began to pant heavy breaths, my mind waltzing in and out of pain and fear. "I'm scared" I informed Evan who was already shitting bricks.

"You're going to be fine, concentrate on your breathing. You can do this" he told me with a reassuring smile. His free hand grabbed mine as I squeezed as hard as I could, those white knuckles of his now becoming ghost like.

"Ahhhh" I screamed as my body bared down and began to push the first baby out. It felt like a blow torch was being shoved down below as the baby's head came out further; stretching me and making me suck in a breath of air.

Finally outside the hospital, Evan parked up and kissed my cheek, his presence being the best comfort to me. "Ember can you go grab a doctor ?" Evan asked the shocked child.

Ember nodded "I will get a doctor now!" She flooded outside the car and ran indoors, her feet carrying her as quickly as she could.

Breathing in and out I bared down again and this time a brief relaxation overcame me, the first baby was out. Looking adoringly I saw it was our boy. He had a mop of dark hair and the chubbiest cheeks.

"He is so perfect" Evan sobbed as he stroked his face. Evan took off his shirt and wrapped it around our newborn son to keep him warm as I cradled the baby into my chest. His little cries began to rocket through his tiny lungs which made me burst out into tears, he was healthy.

"L-Lucas" I stammered to Evan who smiled in agreement "our son, Lucas"

"Fuckkkk" I cried again as another pain surrounded me in an overwhelming, immense cloud. "Take him" I told Evan sternly, my hair stuck to my face from sweat and tears.

Evan took Lucas into his arms nervously from how small and delicate he was, the baby instantly settling into him. "Looks like we are about to meet our second daughter too"

I nodded with tearful eyes "four weeks early. They didn't want to wait around"

"The doctor mommy!" Ember said breathlessly as a woman rushed over with a wheelchair. Thanking the gods I painfully got out the car and into the chair. "Maeve let's deliver this second baby"

I nodded gratefully whilst another doctor took Lucas from Evan to run some checkups. We all hurried in with not a minute to spare. "Okay so how far apart are the contractions for baby number two?"

"A-Ah a minute" I gasped uncontrollably as I panted into another contraction. "I only started having contractions an hour ago" I sobbed which made the midwife raise her eyebrows.

"You may have been in labour without knowing" she informed. "Let me check you and the baby" she continued as I laid down on the hospital chair in our own private room.

"So it seems like baby number two is crowning. When you get another contraction I want you to push"

I nodded with Evan's hand gripping mine tightly. Ember watched in horror at the whole thing "I'm never having a baby"

"It's gross and painful. When I tell you never in a million years I mean it" she stated with a gulp of saliva.

Evan chuckled and so did I briefly before turning my face back down from an array of agony. I began to push instantly like how the midwife told me to.

"I am never having another baby" I screamed as loud as I could; the feeling of a fire being placed on my lower region resurfacing again. "You're nearly there baby. Come on you've got this. You're so strong" Evan mumbled into my ear.

I smiled upwards at him "I-I love you-

"Ahhhh" I hollered with tears rolling down my face messily. "She is coming out" I cried as baby number two made her grand entrance.

The midwife smiled and congratulated us, placing our daughter into our arms as she cried excessively. It must be scary being born, being pushed through a tight canal to then see loads of light and people.

Another midwife then handed us our son Lucas, the two babies now in my arms and snuggling into me. It was utter bliss and the love that I felt was nothing I could explain.

"Marlee. Our beautiful girl Marlee" I whispered which made Evan tear up. He kissed my forehead with adoration and Ember also came over to meet her siblings.

"Hey both of you. Im your sissy and I am going to take all your chocolate. Make you watch horror films and most of all love you too much that you hate me"

Widening our eyes we stared at Ember who wore her signature cheeky grin. "Im kidding" she deadpanned "they can have one piece of chocolate".

Looking back at our newborn babies I noticed how adorable they were, even with blood and vernix over their bodies they were still the most perfect thing I had ever seen.

"I'm so proud of you" Evan sobbed, his smile lighting up an entire room. "And I'm so lucky"
