Chapter 6

10:21, 17 July 2024

Shinjuku had become a blown out battle field by the time we arrived. We managed to fight off a horde of vampires together with the soldiers of Shinjuku, but they just kept on coming. Helicopter after helicopter filled with them flew over heads, arrows were flying and my ears were ringing with all the explosions going on around us. If this is what the front line will be like then I didn't like it one bit. I had no time to oversee the situation, to take a moment to breath and calculate my next move. Those blood suckers kept on coming and we kept on killing them without mercy. Sadly none of the vampires I saw had been part of my squads extermination."We're clear over here." I heard Yu shout from where he was standing. I drove my spear through the last vampire and he disintegrated into ash. "Here as well." I shouted back, turning to Yu. I saw one of the Shinjuku soldiers approached him and Kimizuki. "Thank you so much for the help, I appreciate it" he says, a relieved smile playing along his lips. Me, Shinoa and Yoichi had by now walked over to them to hear the conversation."I'm corporal Nagai of the Shinjuku Security Unit's Third Platoon. You guys must be the Vampire Extermination Unit, correct?" He asks. "We're the Moon Demon Company." Shinoa replies smoothly. The corporals eyes widen in surprise, "The Moon Demon Company? Looks like our luck hasn't run out yet. Men, ready a transport for these soldiers." He commands the two soldiers behind him. They salute him and walk off. On our walk towards the vehicles corporal Nagai told us he wanted us to head west and reinforce our west defenses, we agreed without hesitation since Guren was supposed to be there waiting for us as well. Corporal Nagai offered us to drive us himself there and get us as close to the defense line as possible, he seemed relieved and even hopeful now.We got a lift in one of his vehicles to the west line, but after a couple of minutes of driving the truck suddenly tipping over. Instinctively without having to say anything to each other, we jumped out of the backside of the crashing vehicle. The rain was pouring down on us heavily but when I looked up I saw one of the vampire's helicopters souring above us. "We gotta move!" Shinoa shouts and starts running for cover just as the helicopter starts shooting at us. I run as well, dodging the bullets to the best of my ability. I manage to take cover behind a big slab of stone, protecting me from the bullets. I could hear Yu shouting the corporal's name in the distance, I peek over the bolder I was taking refuge behind to see Yu sprinting towards the unconscious man, who was still stuck in the drivers side of the truck. I steadied my breathing, trying to collect my thoughts. It would be no use if I was stressed out or overwhelmed by the situation. Guren had told me so much, I was not to only focus on the vampires, but also my comrades and myself. "Be careful!" Shinoa shouts at Yu and runs out of her hiding spot to help him with the corporal. I look up at the sky again and see the helicopter turning around, ready for round two. The bullets starts flying again straight towards the corporal, Shinoa and Yu. I spring into action together with Kimizuki and block the spray of bullets with our cursed gear. We knew we couldn't hold it for long. "Yoichi!" Kimizuki shouts. "On it!" Yoichi replies, summoning his bow and aiming for the helicopter. His arrow hits the mark but the helicopter had managed to fire of missiles before it exploded. The missiles caused a huge explosion, the road underneath us crumbling to pieces and I felt to ground beneath me disappear as we all fell down into darkness. When I opened my eyes again I noticed we were in a subway tunnel, Kimizuki and Yoichi were both hovering above me looking concerned. As soon as I had opened my eyes though their faces looked relieved. "We're in the subway?" I ask as Yoichi helps me up. "Looks like it." Kimizuki answers me before shouting, "Hey, idiot Yu! Can you hear me?!", his voice echoing loudly through the tunnel.A reply was heard from the other side of a huge pile of rubbish that was blocking our way. "I can hear you. Are you guys okay?" It was Yu's voice, sounding a bit muffled where it came from the other side. "Of course we are." I reply sarcastically. Kimizuki smiles and adds, "There's no way we would die in a place like this, idiot!""Can you guys get out?" Came the question back from Yu. I turn to look being us, as far as I could see the tunnel continued further on this side. I turn to Kimizuki and give him a nod. "Yeah, no problem!" He shouts back."Then you guys go ahead! We'll catch up with you later." Shinoa's voice came next. "Are you sure?" I ask, not really comfortable with leaving them down here."Yes, don't worry about us. We'll see you at the defense line." She assures me."Let's go, there is nothing we can do here." Kimizuki says. I give him a nod and we all turn to begin the long walk out of the subway tunnel.
