Chapter 17
03:47, 5 December 2021PRESENT -
It was 2 am and the Star Labs doctor was up in her kitchen, trying to get a cup of water, unable to sleep.
"Cait?" She heard a whisper from behind her and dropped her cup. Lucky for her, her speedster boyfriend, caught it in time.
"Oh-I'm so sorry," she stepped back and held onto the counter that quickly froze under her touch. She turned around in horror and shock, confused and helpless.
"Hey, hey," Savitar caught hold of her shoulders and made her look at him, "what's wrong?"
Caitlin bit her lip, she couldn't tell him that she was carrying his child, it's too soon. She couldn't let anyone know, especially since they were trying to find Matthew who was eerily obsessed with her.
"I-I don't know. I think something's up with Frost," she lied through her teeth.
Savitar frowned, "are you sure?"
"Great, lie to the one person who knows you the best," Caitlin heard Frost in her head.
Caitlin shook her head, "yeah, I'll, um, check it over at the lab."
"Okay, come, let's get you back to bed." He swopped her up, bridal style.
Caitlin laughed, "I can get to the room by myself."
"I know."
They woke up hours later and went to Star Labs where everyone was trying to figure out a plan to find Matthew.
Caitlin walked over to Ron and whispered, "Hey, are you okay? You didn't come home last night."
"Yeah, I just had to visit someone who thought they saw Matthew."
Caitlin's eyebrows shot up, "did you find anything?"
Ron shook his head, "no, nothing." Caitlin went to walk away when Ron held her hand, "are you okay though?" He referenced the last time they were together and he saw her throw up.
Caitlin tried to smile, "I'll be much better when we catch Matthew."
Savitar, Barry, and Cisco were observing this from afar.
"What's happening?" Barry asked.
"I don't know," Savitar sighed, "he wasn't home all night. She's probably asking about that."
"That's Caitlin for you, always caring about others," Cisco said.
"But never about herself," Savitar mumbled.
"Why do you say that?" Barry intervened.
"'Cause today, at, like, two in the morning, she was getting water or something and as soon as I called her, she dropped the cup. I caught it though, but I guess she got scared because she hit the cupboard behind her and it went all icy."
"But Frost wasn't awake?" Cisco asked, worried.
Savitar simply nodded his head.
"Caitlin isn't always open about her situations," Barry said, "you should talk to her."
"I did. If anything, she'll come to me when she's ready. I trust her."
Iris caught everyone's attention, "the last time we saw Matthew was a few weeks ago, which isn't good."
"Totally. It's been too quiet," Cisco agreed.
"I'm surprised he hasn't come to us yet," Caitlin said.
"Which is why we have to be ready," Iris concluded, "he's coming up with a plan, and we have no idea what it is. So we need to be ready."
"Maybe get ready tomorrow, though." The team turned their heads to find Future Frost and Nora walking in.
"We're leaving today," Future Frost informed them.
"Are you serious?" Cisco asked.
"Yeah," Barry nodded, "it feels like you guys have barely been here."
"That's what we wanted," Nora said, "the less we intervene with your lives, the better."
"That's why Barry and Savitar could never come, they get too invested with their past lives," Future Frost rolled her eyes.
"Wow, I'm definitely gonna remember this," Savitar threatened.
Future Frost smiled at Savitar, "I hope you do."
"So, that whole reason you came here ... is it fixed? Undone?" Cisco asked.
Nora smiled, "we believe so."
"Wait, you guys can't just leave," Iris protested.
Nora and Frost looked at each other, "why not?"
"We haven't thrown you a goodbye party."
Nora smiled, "no, dear. I don't think-"
"Wait, hold on," Frost interrupted, "let's hear them out."
"Great, we can have a little get-together at our place, around dinner time." Iris quickly switched her gears from reporter to party-planner.
Caitlin felt her heart grow heavier, she couldn't go to a party. Her powers were all over the place.
As everyone started to leave, she ran over to Joe and asked him to get coffee at Jitters.
Joe happily agreed and bought a cup of coffee for himself and a bagel for Caitlin at her request.
"How's work going for you?"
"Not bad, the force won't look for Matthew, though since he's not a prime suspect to any of the Central City cases."
"That makes sense."
"I am trying to become Captain."
"Oh my God, Joe. That's amazing!"
"Yeah, Singh actually recommended me."
"You'd do great as Captain. You've been working as a cop for years and no one knows this city and its metas better than you."
"Thanks, Caitlin. Now, what's going on with you?"
Caitlin looked down, "nothing's wrong..."
"Caitlin, you know better than to lie to a cop."
"Well, I-I," she sighed, "I'm pregnant."
Joe widened his eyes, not saying anything for a few seconds.
Caitlin looked at him pleadingly, "I have no idea what to do," she cried.
Joe held her hand from across the table, "a child. Is this what you want?"
Caitlin looked up and shut her eyes, "yeah, but, I mean, with my powers, this city, how-"
"Don't-" Joe cut her off, "you want this baby? That's the most important thing. So, congratulations," he got up and embraced her in a hug.
"Thank you. I just don't know what to do. I'm terrified I won't be a good mother."
"Caitlin, when Francine was pregnant with Iris, we had no idea what we were doing. You're incredibly smart, you can read all the books in the world about motherhood, but nothing will ever go as planned. It's scary, but when you have people you love by your side, having a child is the best gift anyone could ask for."
"You think we're ready?"
"I treat Savitar like my son, and I say you guys are ready."
"Thanks, Joe. You have no idea how much you've helped. I'll see you at the party."
"I actually won't make it, I have some things to finish over at CCPD, but you guys have fun and tell Frost and Nora I said goodbye."
Caitlin smiled, "of course."
She went home to find Savitar cleaned up nicely in black dress pants and a dark blue buttoned-up shirt.
"Oh wow, am I late?"
He looked at her watch and shrugged, "we have fifteen minutes."
"I won't ever be able to get ready in fift-" She stopped as she saw Savitar smirking.
"Can I?"
She rolled her eyes with a smile, "of course."
He changed her outfits in super speed and stopped to appreciate her beauty.
"Good?" She asked.
"Perfect."
They arrived at the West-Allen apartment to find Iris having outdone herself yet again. The loft was covered with fairy lights and a big banner that said, 'we'll miss you.'
Savitar and Caitlin were greeted by Iris smiled brightly at them, "you're here."
"Looks like we're late," Caitlin looked around to find everyone already there, even Harry who hated parties.
"It's fine, come in!"
Frost and Cisco were in a deep conversation.
"Just don't let me and Caity separate."
"What? I thought you fixed it all."
"We did, but you can never be too careful, this is Iris' and Caity's lives we're talking about."
"Okay, yeah. I hear loud and clear."
Just then, Caitlin walked over, "Hey guys."
"Hey, Caitlin!" Cisco greeted her, with a little bit more enthusiasm than he needed, "let me go get some champagne, ahem."
Caitlin looked at Frost who rolled her eyes, "don't start with him."
"I'm sorry for how I was with you the past few months."
"Don't apologize, we have loads of time in the future."
Caitlin smiled, "it's just ... weird. I mean, seeing you, with my face, talking to you with my voice and not my thoughts."
"I know, it was weird for me too."
"Do you like it? Being separated."
Frost frowned, "I did. At first. But, I don't know. I liked having you by my side. It just isn't the same."
In the kitchen, Savitar poured a glass of champagne in for Nora.
"So, when will you pop the question?" Nora asked.
"What?"
"Proposing to Caitlin."
"I-I don't know. We've only been dating a year."
"Time is no matter when it comes to love. Caitlin and you are soulmates."
"Maybe marriage isn't for us. I mean, are we married in the future?"
Nora grimaced, "y-you're engaged."
Savitar tilted his head, noticing something was obviously wrong but didn't say anything.
As soon as the party was over, Caitlin and Savitar came back home, exhausted.
"I'm going to miss them," Savitar said, solemnly.
Caitlin laughed, "we'll see them soon enough."
"You want some wine?"
"No! Um, I don't feel like it."
"Are you sure? What's wrong?"
They'd always cuddle up and watch a movie with some wine after parties, it was almost like a tradition.
"Nothing's wrong! I'm fine."
"You're not fine. I've noticed for a week now, you've been acting strange. I'm just trying to help. We're a team, we promised-"
"I'm pregnant!"
