Chapter 51
14:40, 9 September 2025The car ride back to Billie's was quiet at first, the kind of comfortable silence that came when you didn't need to fill the air with words. I glanced over at her as she drove, her hand resting on the gear shift, fingers drumming lightly against the leather. The soft glow of passing streetlights illuminated her face in flashes, casting shadows that made her look even more beautiful than she already was.
I hesitated for a second before finally asking, "So... will you be at my concert on Thursday?"
Billie turned her head slightly, a small smirk playing on her lips. "Are you seriously asking me that?"
I shrugged, feigning nonchalance. "I mean, I know you're busy."
She scoffed, shaking her head. "Ember, there is nowhere else I'd rather be. Of course, I'm gonna be there. Front and center, losing my mind over you."
Her words sent warmth flooding through my chest, and I bit my lip to hide my smile. "Good answer."
Billie glanced at me again, eyes playful. "Did you really think I'd miss it?"
"No, but I like hearing you say it."
She chuckled, reaching over to take my hand in hers, giving it a squeeze. "You're kinda cute, you know that?"
I rolled my eyes, but my heart was doing ridiculous things in my chest. "Yeah, yeah. Just drive."
She laughed again but didn't let go of my hand for the rest of the ride.
When we finally pulled up to her house, she cut the engine and turned to look at me. "Ready to relax for the rest of the night?"
I let out a breath, nodding. "Yeah. Today was a lot. A good lot, but still."
Billie smiled, squeezing my hand again before letting go. "Come on. Let's go inside."
I followed her up the driveway, my heart feeling lighter than it had in days. No matter what happened next, at least I knew one thing for sure-Billie would be there, just like she always was.
As we sat on the couch, the quiet hum of the house surrounding us, I could feel the weight of everything-album releases, the concert, meeting Billie's parents-drifting away. All that was left was her. Billie's hand found mine, her fingers brushing gently over my skin, sending a wave of warmth through me. We didn't need to say much. The silence between us felt comfortable, like we had known each other forever.
I turned to her, catching the soft intensity in her eyes. There was something there, something unspoken, and it made my heart race a little faster.
"Ember," Billie said, her voice low, but her gaze unwavering. "I need to tell you something."
I felt my stomach flip, but I didn't say anything, just waited. Billie took a deep breath, her thumb tracing circles on the back of my hand. And then, her words came out softer than I expected, but filled with so much meaning.
"I love you."
My heart stuttered in my chest, and for a moment, I could barely breathe. The words echoed in my mind, filling every corner of my thoughts. I hadn't expected her to say it first, but hearing it from her felt like everything I had been feeling just clicked into place.
I couldn't stop the smile that spread across my face. "I love you too," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.
Before I could say more, Billie leaned in, her lips capturing mine in a kiss that was gentle at first, but then deepened, full of the love we had just confessed. The world seemed to disappear around us, and all that mattered was the connection between us.
When we finally pulled away, Billie's eyes were full of that same warmth, that same quiet intensity. "I'm so glad you're mine," she murmured.
As I sat there, still feeling the warmth of her words, I realized how much we had already shared, and how much more we would share in the future. Everything felt so right. It was like we had been walking toward this moment without even realizing it, and now that it was here, I couldn't imagine being anywhere else, with anyone else.
Billie's hand stayed in mine, her thumb continuing its gentle caress, and I leaned my head on her shoulder, feeling the steady rise and fall of her breath. For a moment, we just existed in that space, the world outside forgotten, the chaos of our lives put on pause.
I could feel my own smile tugging at the corners of my lips. "I'm glad you're mine too."
Billie chuckled softly, her fingers brushing against my cheek, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. "You know," she said, her voice lighter now, "I've been wanting to say that for a while. But I wasn't sure if it was the right time."
I lifted my head slightly, meeting her gaze. "It was the perfect time," I replied, my heart full.
She grinned, squeezing my hand. "Well, I'm glad it felt right to you too."
"Of course it did," I said, my voice soft. "It always has."
Billie's smile widened, and for a few moments, we just sat there, savoring the moment. The weight of everything-the album, the tour, everything that had led up to now-seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the two of us. It was a feeling of peace, of certainty, something I didn't know I had been missing until now.
"Do you think we're your ready for the concert on Thursday?" Billie asked, her voice still light, but with a hint of excitement. "I'm excited for you"
I laughed softly, squeezing her hand back. "I am ready. I've put in so much work already, and now it's time to let everyone hear it."
Billie looked at me, her eyes shining with confidence.
And just like that, I felt the last of my nerves melt away. It wasn't just about the concert anymore, or the album, or the people waiting for us. It was about us, and whatever came next for us, together. And I knew, in that moment, that everything we had would carry us through it all.
"I'm really glad we're doing this together," I murmured, my voice barely a whisper. "I don't think I could've done it without you."
Billie leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to my forehead. "You don't have to do it alone. You never will."
And as I closed my eyes for a second, feeling the comfort of her presence beside me, I realized that she was right. We were a team now. And whatever came next-whether it was the concert, the album release, or whatever challenges we'd face-we would face it together.
"I love you," I said again, the words feeling more and more like home.
Billie smiled, her eyes warm with affection. "I love you too, Ember."
And in that moment, it felt like nothing else mattered.
