Chapter 12

20:22, 20 April 2013

2 days, and Jade is still here with us. It's like torture, thinking at any given minute she could stop living. It's torture thinking that I'm going to lose my precious baby girl.

"How is she today?" Kris asked, sitting down next to me. Jade was sleeping soundly after being awake for a little bit for more tests. Tests, tests, tests. That's all the doctors are doing. Not trying to make her better, trying to save her. They say there is nothing they can do, but there has to be. There has to be.

"She's better. They said that after today we can take her home. That way, she'll at least be in a comfortable place. But she's going to be bed ridden. No moving too much, no running around. She'll be trapped, just like here," I ranted.

"At least she'll be at home," he said softly. I looked at him and nodded my head in agreement. "Are Zayn's friends coming to see her at all?"

"Once we're home, yes. They have a break starting tonight." Kris nodded instead of saying anything. We all know the chances. Jade may not make it that long. We just have a lot of hope that she does.

"Does she know anything?" Kris asked, keeping his eyes trained on me.

I shook my head. "The doctor said that she won't feel anything. She doesn't feel pain besides a head ache right now. He recommended we try to describe it to her, but she's two. How do you tell a two year old that she's dying?"

"Raven, at least tell her something. She's probably concerned by your voices. She might be two, but she's not dumb. She's a bright two year old, who understands a lot."

"I'll talk to Zayn about it, ok?" Kris nodded and looked around, raising an eyebrow. I guess that he was wondering where Zayn went, so I sighed. "Phone call, again."

"They should leave him alone," Kris muttered.

"I know, but I think this was his mother. She's flying out tomorrow." Kris's eyes widened. I nodded with a harsh chuckle. "I wasn't expecting to meet her under these circumstances."

"Life throws weird curve balls at you, sometimes. You just have to hope you hit it and get a homerun, or you'll get striked out," Kris tried to explain. I raised my eyebrows. He shrugged a shoulder and sighed, "I tried to help."

"You Americans and your weird sayings," I lightly laughed.

"No no, that's not an American saying. That's a Kris saying that always fails." We chuckled together, but it got cut off when Zayn entered the room.

Zayn knows what happened was an accident, but he doesn't like how Kris got out of it with only a few injuries. And that his baby girl is in a hospital bed, dying. It's not that Zayn wishes Kris would be in this position, he just doesn't think it's fair.

"Everything ok?" I asked. He nodded and sat down beside be on the couch, kissing my temple.

"Can I talk to you outside, Raven?" Zayn asked after an awkward moment. I nodded and looked at Jade one last time. He gripped my hand and led me outside of the room and towards the little grass area outside.

"My time's getting cut short, Ray," Zayn muttered as we walked.

"Your's isn't the only time being cut short," I whispered. Zayn let out a sigh and stopped me from continuing the walk. "I'm sorry."

"They want me back soon."

"They can fuck off!" I shouted. "They can't take you away from this. I need you, Jade needs you. We need you."

"Babe, I know. I told them that. They understand, but after the break, they want me to come back shortly after." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I don't understand either, but we just have to go with it."

"What're they gonna do if you don't go? Kick you out of the band? They can't do that. Stop the tour? They sure as hell won't do that." I bit my lip and held onto Zayn's neck. "You can't leave us now."

"I'll talk to them and get it figured out. For now, the boys are going to come and try to lighten everything up, ok? A day after tomorrow they're flying in."

I nodded my head and just stared into Zayn's eyes before he held onto my wrists and kissed me quickly. "Zayn, we need to tell her."

He shook his head. "We can't, Raven. We can't-"

"We can't just act like it's not going to happen. It is and she has every right to know what she's going to go through. At least explain to her something, just something." I backed away from Zayn and crossed my arms.

"Ray, she's two. She won't understand-"

"I thought the same thing. But Kris made a good point. She may be two, but she's been through a lot more than any normal two year old. She's smart. She'll understand something." I tried to get Zayn to agree, and it took some time to do so. But eventually he agreed.

We went back to Jade's room without saying a word, just our hands in each other's.

Tracy met us at the door with a small smile. "She's awake," she whispered. A small grin spread on my lips and I pushed open the door. Kris was talking to her sweetly and she had a small smile on her lips. The first one I've seen in a while. Zayn coughed and Kris spun around quickly. He nodded his head, kissed Jade's forehead and exited with Tracy.

"Hi, baby," I said quietly. Jade's eyes trained on me, looking like she was trying to figure out who I am. "It's mumma."

A smile spread on her lips again and she sat up in bed. The doctor said that it's good she can do that. Very good, actually, but it's not good to do at the moment. "Sit back baby. Daddy's here too, love."

"Dadda!" She said sweetly. Zayn chuckled and said "Hi, angel."

We talked with Jade as much as we could. She giggled, told us stories and talked about all of the dreams she had when she was sleeping for so long. We laughed with her and listened intently. This is the longest she's been awake since she woke up the first time, and it's incredible.

I took a deep breath, looked at Zayn and back to Jade. Zayn knew what I was going to start to talk about, so he sat on the edge of his seat and cupped his hands together on his knees. "Jade, we have talk to-"

"Mumma, what are you wearin'?" Jade asked.

I looked down and described what I had on. "Sweatpants and a sweatshirt. Why, baby?"

"I see some of that," she said happily. I grinned over to Zayn.

"What is daddy wearing, Jade?" She looked for Zayn and he said her name quietly. Her head snapped towards him and she studied him for a while.

"Pants and jacket!" She said happily, again. Zayn smiled and his eyes became red and watery. "Am I getting better, mumma?"

I took a deep breath and reached for her hand. "Yes, baby, you are." I looked at Zayn and looked at his tear stained cheeks. He took a shakey breath and stared back at me. I looked back to Jade and tried to smile. "You are getting better, angel."

~~

"Are you ready?" Zayn asked me. I nodded my head as I secured Jade's bag on my shoulder once more. Kris held open the door for Zayn and Jade. Zayn started to push Jade in her wheelchair down the hallway. The doctor came towards us and nodded his head.

"Alright. She's been discharged. Any sign of pain or anything strange, bring her back." He handed me some papers and I scanned over them. "Those are some prescriptions for her head. Just give her one every 6 to 8 hours, or whenever she has a head ache. It'll subside the pain."

I nodded. "Thank you, Doctor."

"Of course. By the way, Jade is such a strong, beautiful young child." Zayn nodded, whispered 'thank you', and pushed Jade down the hallway after Dr. Vincent patted her knee.

Before leaving, I asked the doctor one last question. "Is there any chance, Doctor? Any at all?"

He studied my face, looked to down the hallway to Jade and back to me. "She's doing very, very good."

"But?" I asked, crossed my arms over my chest.

"No matter how good, there is a very small chance she will," he cleared his throat and looked down to his shoes, "That she will survive this."

I let out a long breath and nodded my head a few times. "Thank you," I said quietly.

"I'm sorry. Listen, Miss Taint, just stay with her. Encourage her through the bad times. Honestly, with her recovery about everything else, she may be able to get up in a few days. That's if-"

"If she lives, I know. Thank you, Doctor," I mumbled. I walked towards Zayn, Jade, Tracy and Kris. Tracy placed a hand on my shoulder and led me out to the car.

These next few days will be the scariest, nerve wrecking days I'll ever have to experience.
