Chapter 4~ Rescued
18:48, 19 June 201619 years Elizabeth pov:
That day was my last day in the orphanage. I couldn't believe I was finally free. Free to start a new life, perhaps travel. I never liked staying still. I liked to run and run and run again.
I was finally able to leave the place where I was considered insane. It was everything I wanted since I was brought in there when I was 5. Well, I also wanted to see the Doctor again. That smug little smile of his, his childishly sparkling eyes and God, that brilliant hair. Okay, sounded too obsessed, didn't I?
The point is, I very much wanted to see him. At least once more. But unluckily, I haven't. Not since that night.
That gloomy day of December, I was hanging around the city as I usually did in evenings. From how shiny, sparkly and pretty London was, you could guess Christmas was approaching.
I kept walking on, kids laughing around me and their mothers telling them to be good, otherwise Santa wouldn't have come.
I couldn't help but smirk at this. I never got a present from Santa but, when little, I never doubted of him existing. Even now I, though not aloud, acknowledged his existence.
I never wanted to stop believing in magic. Because, even though it sounds terribly cliché, the Doctor was somehow something magical to me. A mystery even. Though still secretly hoping that he would've showed up all of a sudden, jumped out from behind a corner or a cake, I pushed the thought of him away. Christmas was approaching and no one should be sad at this time of the year.
With this thought in my head, I kept walking. Walking and walking, not exactly knowing where I was directed. I just followed my instinct and went where my legs brought me. That, until I looked up and I noticed I was on a completely desert street. I just shrugged and started walking again, humming the melody from before. Suddenly I heard a strange noise.
Or it was that noise. That beautiful and magical noise. Yet it was strange. I looked around begging in my mind that what I heard was actually the TARDIS and I haven't dreamt about it. The second later the TARDIS appeared in the sky, from something that looked like a portal.
«Doctor.» I told myself looking up at the time machine and smiling hopefully. Suddenly it slammed into a building. I cocked my head to the side, confusingly «Doctor?»
It was way strange for the Doctor to don't know how to fly the TARDIS. Well, not considering the fact that he failed his test on flying her. I then noticed that the TARDIS was flying directly on me, slamming into other buildings in her way.
«Oh-Oh.» I whispered still looking up. I started running not from it but to it, 'cause every time that in the movies someone runs from something, it ends falling on them. Let's say 50% percent of the times.
So I ran to it and, when it was about to hit the ground, I slid above and I ducked. I heard a big smash behind me, so I jumped back on my feet and I spun.
Strangely the time machine was perfectly fine and perfectly standing straight on the street. I smirked. «You're used to this, aren't you?» I asked. I then ran to it stopping in front of the doors. My heart beat quickly in my chest, risking to jump out of it in any second. I was scared to face the Doctor again.
After all this years...
But is he fine? I needed to check it.
I stepped towards the TARDIS but then got back again, still scared. «Come on, Elizabeth. What if he needs help? What if he's dying?» I asked myself aloud, through my gritted teeth.
"Idiot, he can regenerate." a voice in my mind reminded. True. Oh, my gosh I'm starting to forget. No, this needs to stop. Now. I approached the blue box and was about to knock when the doors opened and a tall's head man, with brown eyes and messy hair, popped out. His eyes scanned the area only to then stuck down on me.
He grinned «Hello.» then crushed on the floor.
My eyes went wide «Jesus, are you okay?» I asked, falling on my knees next him and helping him to sit up.
«Not quite, no.» he joked. I rolled my eyes a little. Suddenly he shouted in pain. «Hey, hey, breath. What's wrong?» I asked before the answer came into my mind.
«I'm dying.» he spoke the second later «Well, not literally. My body is changing AH!» he shouted the last part, falling next to me.
«Yeah, yeah right. You need to get in there.» I said, took his arm, slang it over my shoulder and tried to pick him up -God for being so skinny he was heavy- but he protested.
«No! I need to find her. I need to find Elizabeth! I promised I would've come back!» he said, still in pain and falling back on the ground.
I gasped. He didn't forget. He remembered me all this time! I wanted to wrap my hands around his neck and never let go but then the voice in my mind returned "He is regenerating for gods sake! Help him!" So I snapped back to reality.
«I'm sure she will forgive you. Now just get back in this thing.» I said helping him up. I didn't want to tell him I was Elizabeth. But I planned on doing it straight away after the regeneration.
«No, you don't understand! I need to see her and I promised!» he said, getting rid of my hand and trying to walk but crushing back on the ground again.
I sighed in exasperation. «Doctor just get in the TARDIS, please!» I begged, crouching near him.
«No, I need to- wait.» he spun to face me. «How do you know my name? How do you know about the TARDIS?» he asked, frowning.
Oh-oh...
«Be-Because...»
«Your eyes. Blue. I saw this blue only twice in my life. But it means - AH!» he shouted in pain.
I smirked. «Not quite, no.»
He looked up at me again and ignoring the pain, the fact he was dying, smiled and laughing, breathed out my name like it was the only thing that made him stay alive. «Elizabeth. It's you.» he whispered, tears welling up in his eyes, though never spilling.
I smiled, softly. «Yes, Doctor, yes it's me. All will be fine but you need to get into the TARDIS now. I can help you, I know how it all works.» I said trying to convince him but he just kept smiling at me.
«Of course you do. You are my special girl.» he said, smiling through his teeth. Now I was the one who was about to cry. I smiled, cupped his face and kissed his forehead.
I then pulled away and, rubbing his cheek with my thumb, said «I am, Doc. Now do us both the pleasure and run for your life.» I said with a smile, repeating the exact same words he told me when we first met.
«Oi! No quoting my phrases!» he said, laughing a little. I chuckled too.
«Now. TARDIS.» I then said.
«Yes.» he agreed, this time letting me help him. We somehow managed to walk into the TARDIS and I shut the door behind us.
«You didn't change her yet, huh?» I ask looking at the TARDIS with a smile.«Not yet. AH! Can we return to the regeneration please?» he urged, impatiently.
«Fine, fine. Come on.» I said and helped him to reach the console. As I left him go he nearly crushed on the floor but, in the last second, grabbed onto the console, supporting on it.
«Why on Earth are you suffering that much?? It should hurt during and after the regeneration not before it!» I exclaimed.
«Well.» he started with that thick British accent of his. «I was in a rush to come and find you. Let's say I got the time wrong a couple of times and the TARDIS got shot in the process. The console acted a bit jerky and, the next thing I know, I'm lying on the floor with a huge headache and a broken ankle. Plus the regeneration started so it won't heal straight away.» he quickly explained.
«Then why the heck didn't you regenerate?!» I shouted at him.
«I wanted you to be here too! You wouldn't have recognized me after I changed form! AH!» he defended, before twisting in pain.
I couldn't decide on be thankful or angry. I pushed that away with a shake of my head. «Okay, now I'm here so you can regenerate.» I urged.
«You're right. But... The TARDIS needs to travel for me to regenerate.» he said, panting a little.
«Al-Alright I can handle this.» I said running to the console and starting pushing buttons and pulling lever.
«What?! No no no no no, you don't know how to fly it! You could break it and...» he trailed off when the TARDIS made her always noise, traveling in the time vortex.
I didn't even know how I did it. How I actually flied the TARDIS. It seemed so familiar, like I already did it before.
«Oh.» the Doctors voice made me look at him, the two of us with the same wide eyed expression «I guess I was wrong.» he said looking at me. «How did you do it?» he then asked, frowning in confusion.
«I-I dunno.» I shook my head, in confusion «Maybe it's because of the dreams. Maybe I learned watching you.» I said shrugging, but I knew I was just lying to him and to myself.
He looked away. «Possibly.» he muttered.
I then remembered what was going on. «You can regenerate now!» I said, coming closer him but not too much because I knew how it worked.
He smiled in pain and pushing himself away the console said «I know but...» Then he looked at me. «...I don't wanna go.» he said. The next thing I knew, the yellow regeneration light invaded his whole body.
«Good Night.» I whispered, while the yellow light was spinning out of him.
Then it exploded, breaking glasses and sending the console in flames, the potent waves swiping me off of my feet and sending me on the floor.
I lied there for some seconds. When I finally found the power to get up and raise my head, I sat on the floor. After a second I got up, panting slightly. I looked at the TARDIS: it was all in flames. Brilliant Doctor, just killed your time machine. Talking about the devil, I spun around and I saw him. Well, not exactly him. It was totally a different man.
He looked at me too, our gazes meeting. Slowly a grin speared across my face. He soon joined and, as he did, I couldn't deny but say my heart fluttered. His hair had a chocolate-brown color and it was longer; his eyes were hazel green and he was shorter than the 10th. He still wore his clothes though, and he looked really weird in them.
«OU!» he screamed and fell on the console.I went to run to him and help but was stopped by his hand that he held out.«No! Stay back! It could be dangerous.» he said, squeezing his eyes in pain.
Then a yellow light flew out his mouth and it flew up. I looked at the Doctor and he looked at me. We stared at each other my heart still racing a million miles.
«Legs?» he asked me.
I eyed him, from head to feet and then looked back at his eyes. I grinned «Legs.»
«Ah!» he exclaimed and kissed them. «I've still got legs. Good. Arms. Hands. Ooh! Fingers. Lots of fingers. Ears yes. Eyes two. Nose.»
«And you had worse.» I said jumping on the controls.
He snapped his fingers at me. «You're right Smith.» he said, and I giggled while he continued observing his new body.
«Chin. Blimey. Hair.» he looked at it.«I'm a girl!» he shouted.
I shook my head a little «Not quite, no.»
«You're right. Again. No, no. I'm not a girl. Still not ginger.» he said, disappointed. Suddenly I laughed. He looked at me. I froze with a smile on my face.
«How do I look?» he asked. I looked at him. «New. Different.» I replied eyeing him once again.
«I've heard that one before. I said it then and will say it again: it doesn't count as an answer. Now tell me, do I look good? Or am I handsome?» he asked.
I scowled a little «You wish.»
«I'm sure you think that, you just don't want to say it.»
I rolled my eyes, though blushing a little «In your dreams maybe.»
He grinned «No. In your dreams maybe.» he said tapping my nose with his finger.
I smiled at the gesture while he was still grinning at me. He then opened his mouth to say something, when BANG!
He was interrupted by a loud bang that shook the the TARDIS and made me fall down from the console. Fell on the Doctor. He groaned and I did the same, trying to get up.
«Sorry, are you fine?» I apologized holding my hand out once I was back on my feet. He took it and stood up saying «Fine, yeah. But don't kill me, I was just born.» he joked, making me roll my eyes.
BANG! Again.
I fell down and this time something heavy fell on me. I groaned, looking up to face two green eyes.
«Well, hello.» I said sarcastically, looking at the Doctor. We were inches far, that close that I could feel his worm breath on my face and our nose almost bump in each other.
«Oh, Hi... Emm... Sorry.» he said looking into my eyes. I looked in his eyes and giggled. «What is it you are laughing for?» he asked still on me.
«Your eyes are green now. Green like the grass... Like the trees... Like apples!» I said, making his eyes suddenly light up.
«Speaking of apples, Smith.» he jumped on his feet and helped me up too. «I need to feed my new mouth.» he then said and walked to the console trying to do something.
«Emm... Doctor?»
«Yes, Lizzie?»
«First of all: never call me like that again. And second: Aren't we forgetting something?»
«Emm... You're right... We're... We're...»
«Crashing!» I shouted exited.
He looked at me exited too.
«Ha ha!» he said and pulled the lever.
«GERONIMO!» I shouted as loudly as I could.
