Chapter 2. The Academy & The Final Exam

“You too! What have you done? You guys aren’t going to get away with this anymore!!” Two chunnin were chasing Naruto and I through the village. We laughed maniacally, increasing our speed. Pshh, like we ever really got away with anything.

We’d just finished re-decorating all of the Hokage statues’ faces. We’re pro like that.

After I got out of the hospital, I told Kakashi that  I was going to live with Naruto, but he wouldn’t let me live with anyone else, insisting that it was his duty to take care of me. Our relationship is still kind of awkward, My attitude and his calmness infuriating me.

It’s been two years. Naruto and I are the best of friends. Kakashi tries his best to interact with me, I do my best to stay out of his way. That doesn’t really help though. See, I’m constantly getting into trouble with Naruto, and Kakashi Uncle’s great at the discipline part of parenting. He’s got the lectures down and everything.

First he’ll find me wherever I am, then tie me down and lecture me till I just about go insane. Naruto is so lucky, he doesn’t have anybody to tell him what to do, but whenever I mention something along those lines, he’ll look all sad and stuff. So I just stop bringing it up.

My day’s since I got to Konoha have consisted of my regular morning routines ( Yeah, I still stay in shape and practice all my jutsu. I’ve gotten A LOT better at my water dragon jutsu. Almost perfection. I go for runs with a weighted back pack, do my push-ups and all my exercises before dawn.

Then I go to the academy with Naruto. I’ve made a bunch of other friends there. Kiba (Akamaru is so cute!), Shikamaru (lazy but intelligent), Choji (Who is way too kind for his own good), Hinata (Who has the cutest crush on Naruto!) and  I even talk to Sasuke. He was a hard one to get to know though. We’re not really friends, He’s more of a rival if anything. But we have respect for each other.

Flashback: Maki’s first day at the academy.

“Naruto, I’m kind of nervous.” I said shyly. Normally I’m not a shy person, but I have a feeling that if I make enemies in the academy, I’ll have those enemies for life.

“Come on Maki! You’ll be fine, Believe it!”

I laughed at his stupid phrase. Ok Maki, you can do this. I thought, prep talking myself.

I walked into the room with Naruto and took a seat right next to him. On the other side of him was a kid with a serious look on his face. He had black hair and his eyes..

They were eyes of an avenger.

Flashback over.

Third Person P.O.V.

“Hokage-sama!”

“Third, we have an emergency!”

The two chunnin cried out.

“What?!” The third hokage replied, busy with his painting.

“What is it? And do not tell me it’s those two again.”

“But they vandalized the stone faces of all the hokage!”

The hokage shook his head muttering.

“Those two..”

Back to Maki’s P.O.V.

“Hahaha we were totally ninja!” I whispered to Naruto as the two chunnin ran past us. We had camouflaged ourselves with the fence.

“Believe it!” Naruto replied just a little too loud. We uncamouflaged ourselves and laughed at our expertise, feeling accomplished. “Too easy!” I said grinning.

“NARUTO UZUMAKI. MAKI HATAKE.” I jumped up twenty feet in the air, scared out of my mind. Naruto hadn’t taken the surprise that well either. He landed right next to me on the ground. I laughed uneasily. “Heheh.. Whatcha doin’ here iruka sensei?”

He pointed at us angrily. “What are you two doing during class?”

“…”

So yeah, he tied us up and carried us over his shoulder back to class, then dumped us on the ground in front of everybody.

“Listen Naruto, this is your THIRD time taking the exam because you’ve failed it the last two times. You shouldn’t be fooling around like that!” Iruka lectured at Naruto.

Then he turned to me. “And Maki! You may be tied for the highest grade in the class, but you still need to be in school during school hours.” Blah blah blah. He sounded like Kakashi Uncle.

Naruto made a face at him which I’m pretty sure pissed him off, because I could see his anime vein popping out. If only Kakashi Uncle reacted like that towards my attitude. But no, he couldn’t care less. I think he acts all calm and stuff to piss me off.

“Listen up everyone! We’re reviewing the transformation jutsu! Even if you passed you still have to line up.” He yelled angrily. The whole class groaned and starting grumbling at us. Blah blah, I don’t care what they think.

Everyone lined up and preformed. When it was my turn, I did it perfectly of course, but then I looked at Naruto, worried. This was his worst jutsu, even though I’d helped him practice many times.

When it was Naruto’s turn, he held a mischievous grin. And I knew he was going for sexy jutsu.

He preformed his sexy jutsu and Iruka sensei’s eyes popped out of his head. An invisible force pushed him back a couple of feet and he fell on his arse.

I laughed, naturally.

Until Iruka sensei silenced me with his death glare.

“Naruto, for real this time.” He said sternly, and naruto started the hand signs for the transformation jutsu.

He did the jutsu poorly. I sighed sadly, this was never going to work. He wasn’t going to pass if he couldn’t perform a simple jutsu like that. I have to do something…

The next day was THE day. Exam day, the day everybody graduates and the day every one of us from the academy become real ninja. That is, if you pass.

I had it real easy. I had to perform the transformation jutsu, one of my favorites. Training from the age of 3, assignments from the academy almost made me laugh. But I felt bad for Naruto, he had it a lot harder that I did.

As I expected, Everyone passed, but Naruto. After class that day, I saw him sitting all by himself on the swings, looking at the grass in embarrassment. I walked over to him.

“Come on, Naruto. Cheer up, you’ll pass next year, I’m sure of it. I’ll help you all I can whenever I can.” I said, trying to cheer him up.

"This is my third time failing, Maki. What if i never make it out of the academy?" He asked in a small discouraged voice.

I did the only thing i could do. I hugged him, hoping the comfort of a hug would be enough right now. "Don't worry, I'll help you." I said.

*Later that evening

I couldn't find Naruto anywhere! Where would he go.. 

Then i spotted him with Mizuki sensei on the roof. I walked over there behind a wall, and listened in on their conversation.

"Anyone who masters a jutsu from the scroll of sealing will pass and become a ninja." I heard Mizuki sensei tell Naruto. 

Naruto being the desparate loser he is (Love you naruto c: ) says "Really?!" Getting excited. That idiot, something isn't adding up right. I know the scroll of sealing, only Jounin and the hokage from our village are allowed to see it, it would make no sense for a boy not even a genin to be able to get the scroll with permission to master the jutsu. 

Which meant Naruto was planning to steal it.

Well, being the best friend i am, i can't let him do that alone, now can I? :D

After Mizuki left Naruto got up and i  made myself known. "So, you're planning to steal the scroll, huh?" I said.

His fists were clenched. "It's not like I have a choice! I have to become a ninja before i can become hokage!" 

I crossed my arms. "Relax, i'm here to help." 

He smiled. I know, i'm an amazing friend.

We stole the scroll right then. I knew that the leaf village ninja would try to find us, so we hid in the woods so that Naruto could learn the jutsu of his choice from the forbidden scroll.

"So, shall we start with the first one? hmm, Shadow clone jutsu." What?! All that trouble to get the scroll and I could've taught him this jutsu. pffffff.

"Naruto, do you want me to teach you this jutsu? I know it so you don't have to learn it by yourself." 

He looked at me shocked. "What? how do you know a jutsu from this scroll?"

Well crap. I guess I forgot to mention my past when i met the guy. I didn't exactly plan on telling him anything. Meh, if i couldn't trust Naruto, i don't think i could trust anybody else. 

I sighed.

"Guess i forgot to mention my past, huh? Well, i should've told you a long time ago i suppose. You see, my dad was jealous of his brother for being perfect, and lived in a secluded land area with my mom and I. When i turned three he began to train me in the ways of a ninja. I can do justu's ranging from d-rank to s-rank, some sealing jutsu's and some medical ninjutsu too. My jutsu and chakra control are jounin level, that's why i'm tied with sasuke for highest grade at the academy. I already know all that stuff, but it doesn't just come easy to me. I worked really hard to get better. I didn't have a childhood unless you consider training to be a childhood."

Naruto's face was priceless. Haha.

"AND YOU NEVER TOLD ME, WHYYYY?!?!!!" He asked. I laughed nervously, hand behind my head and looking down at the ground. Yeah, i do that a  lot. "I dunno, i guess it just never came up.. but anyways, let me help you with this jutsu, yeah?!" I smiled at him.

He reluctantly agreed with no more questions.

It had been several of hours and both of us were exhausted. Naruto had just about mastered the jutsu. That was when...

"Ha! caught you two."

I looked up started. "Iruka sensei!!! What are you doing here?!" I exclaimed loudly.

"Thought you could get away with stealing the scrolls of our  people, huh? Well-"

Naruto cut him off. "Iruka sensei, look! I learned a new jutsu from the scroll mizuki told me to take! He said the if i learn a jutsu from here, i can become a ninja!"

He was just about to show him the jutsu he'd just learned, when Mizuki appeared out of a tree and iruka sensei's face changed into a look of realization.

Mizuki pulled out some kunai.

I realized that Mizuki was about to throw them at Iruka sensei and Naruto before my sensei did. "Iruka sensei! Naruto, get out of the way!!!" I screamed at them. But it was too late. He threw the kunai, and i ran.

I shoved Iruka sensei and Naruto out of the way, blocking the kunai with my body. One pierced deep into my left shoulder, and the other one got my lower right abdomen. I groaned and fell to the ground.

"Maki!" Naruto yelled coming towards me, that idiot.

"What are you doing Naruto! Get out of here!" I yelled with what strength i had left.

"Naruto, give me the scroll!" Mizuki said. I laughed, Naruto couldn't be that stupid. 

"Naruto, don't give him the scroll, even if you die!" Iruka shouted.

Like hell I was going to let that happen.

Iruka sensei continued. "Mizuki's been using you! That scroll contains hidden jutsu known only to the elites and the hokage of the hidden leaf! Given it falls into the wrong hands, bad things can and will happen!"

Mizuki laughed.

"Listen Naruto, there's no point in you having it anyways. I'll tell you the truth. Twe-"

"NOOOO." Iruka sensei yelled.

Mizuki continued. "Twelve years ago, a demon fox that almost destroyed the hidden leaf, was sealed inside a baby boy. And since that day, there was a rule. That no one was allowed to tell this boy of that day or what happened. No one is allowed to even talk about it. That's right, Naruto. No one is allowed to talk about you or the demon fox that's sealed inside of you."

I'm going to rip Mizuki's face into a thousand peaces.

I ripped out the Kunai and groaned, knowing that if i didn't get myself bandaged soon, i was going to lose to much blood. 

Naruto looked fearful and lost. "Huh, what do you mean?" 

"Naruto, you don't have to listen to him." I said, then coughed up some blood.

"It means that you are..." Mizuki said suspensefully.

"STOP IT!" Iruka sensei barked at Mizuki threateningly.

oooh, scary. Not really lol.

"...Are the nine tails demon fox that killed Iruka's parents and destroyed Konoha. You were sealed by the hokage you admire, and you've been lied to by everybody, even your friend over there." He finished, nodding at me.

"You never found it odd how everybody hated you? Even Iruka hated you. You killed his parents!" He said menacingly, and i could tell that he was getting to Naruto. 

I used all of the strength to get up and walk to Naruto, engulfing him in a big hug, tears coming from  my eyes. 

"Don't listen to him Naruto, I care about you. I could never hate you.I love you, you're my best friend. I don't care what he says, you'll ALWAYS be my best friend no matter what. Don't let him ruin you. He's trying to provoke you, he wants you to take out all of your anger on your village. His aim is to destroy the village. A real ninja sees through deception, so see through THIS deception and don't give the scroll to him." I said.

As i was hugging him, I transferred most of what was left of my chakra to Naruto, leaving enough so that i would still be breathing, though barely. It was risky, if i transferred too much i could die, and even now, i would be barely alive, but Naruto needed all the chakra he could get. He had used up most of his chakra learning shadow clone jutsu, and he needed more to defeat Mizuki with that jutsu.  

Before i passed out i said, "Listen Naruto, don't believe this guy. He's a fake, trust Iruka. And see through any deception. Don't worry about me, i'll be fine. I've transferred most of my chakra to you, so you better beat this guy up for me, okay?" I smiled one last time before i passed out completely, darkness engulfing me.
